Psalm 44-49
New American Standard Bible
Former Times of Help and Present Troubles.
For the music director. A [a]Maskil of the sons of Korah.
44 God, we have heard with our ears,
Our (A)fathers have told us
The (B)work that You did in their days,
In the (C)days of old.
2 You with Your own hand (D)drove out the nations;
Then You (E)planted them;
You (F)afflicted the peoples,
Then You (G)let them go free.
3 For by their own sword they (H)did not possess the land,
And their own arm did not save them,
But Your right hand and Your (I)arm and the (J)light of Your presence,
For You (K)favored them.
4 You are (L)my King, God;
(M)Command [b]victories for Jacob.
5 Through You we will (N)push back our adversaries;
Through Your name we will (O)trample down those who rise up against us.
6 For I will (P)not trust in my bow,
Nor will my sword save me.
7 But You (Q)have saved us from our adversaries,
And You have (R)put to shame those who hate us.
8 In God we have (S)boasted all day long,
And we will (T)give thanks to Your name forever. Selah
9 Yet You (U)have rejected us and brought us to (V)dishonor,
And (W)do not go out with our armies.
10 You cause us to (X)turn back from the enemy;
And those who hate us (Y)have taken spoils for themselves.
11 You turn us over [c]to be eaten like (Z)sheep,
And have (AA)scattered us among the nations.
12 You (AB)sell Your people [d]cheaply,
And have not [e]profited by their sale.
13 You make us an object of (AC)reproach to our neighbors,
Of scoffing and (AD)ridicule to those around us.
14 You make us (AE)a proverb among the nations,
A [f](AF)laughingstock among the peoples.
15 All day long my dishonor is before me
And [g]I am covered with my (AG)humiliation,
16 Because of the voice of one who (AH)taunts and reviles,
Because of the presence of the (AI)enemy and the avenger.
17 All this has come upon us, but we have (AJ)not forgotten You,
And we have not (AK)dealt falsely with Your covenant.
18 Our heart has not (AL)turned back,
And our steps (AM)have not deviated from Your way,
19 Yet You have (AN)crushed us in a place of (AO)jackals
And covered us with [h](AP)deep darkness.
20 If we had (AQ)forgotten the name of our God
Or extended our [i]hands to (AR)a strange god,
21 Would God not (AS)find this out?
For He knows the secrets of the heart.
22 But (AT)for Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are regarded as (AU)sheep to be slaughtered.
23 (AV)Wake Yourself up, why (AW)do You sleep, Lord?
Awake, (AX)do not reject us forever.
24 Why do You (AY)hide Your face
And (AZ)forget our affliction and oppression?
25 For our (BA)souls have sunk down into the dust;
Our bodies cling to the earth.
26 (BB)Rise up, be our help,
And (BC)redeem us because of Your mercy.
A Song Celebrating the King’s Marriage.
For the music director; according to the [j]Shoshannim. A [k]Maskil of the sons of Korah. A Song of Love.
45 My heart is moved with a good theme;
I [l]address my [m]verses to the [n]King;
My tongue is the pen of (BD)a ready writer.
2 You are the most handsome of the sons of mankind;
(BE)Grace is poured [o]upon Your lips;
Therefore God has (BF)blessed You forever.
3 Strap (BG)Your sword on Your thigh, [p](BH)Mighty One,
In Your splendor and majesty!
4 And in Your majesty ride on victoriously,
For the cause of truth, (BI)humility, and righteousness;
Let Your (BJ)right hand teach You [q]awesome things.
5 Your (BK)arrows are sharp;
The (BL)peoples fall under You;
Your arrows are (BM)in the heart of the King’s enemies.
6 (BN)Your throne, God, is forever and ever;
(BO)The scepter of Your kingdom is a scepter of justice.
7 You have (BP)loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
Therefore God, Your God, has (BQ)anointed You
With the oil of joy above Your companions.
8 All Your garments are fragrant with (BR)myrrh, aloes, and cassia;
From ivory palaces (BS)stringed instruments have made You joyful.
9 Kings’ daughters are among (BT)Your noble women;
At Your (BU)right hand stands the queen in (BV)gold from Ophir.
10 Listen, daughter, look and incline your ear:
(BW)Forget your people and your father’s house;
11 Then the King will crave your beauty.
Because He is your (BX)Lord, (BY)bow down to Him.
12 The daughter of (BZ)Tyre will come with a gift;
The (CA)wealthy among the people will seek your favor.
13 The King’s daughter is all glorious within;
Her clothing is (CB)interwoven with gold.
14 She will be (CC)brought to the King (CD)in colorful garments;
The (CE)virgins, her companions who follow her,
Will be brought to You.
15 They will be brought with joy and rejoicing;
They will enter into the King’s palace.
16 In place of your fathers will be your sons;
You shall make them princes in all the earth.
17 I will make (CF)Your name known among all generations;
Therefore the peoples (CG)will praise You forever and ever.
God, the Refuge of His People.
For the music director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah, [r]set to Alamoth. A Song.
46 God is our (CH)refuge and strength,
A [s]very (CI)ready help (CJ)in [t]trouble.
2 Therefore we will (CK)not fear, though (CL)the earth shakes
And (CM)the mountains slip into the heart of the [u]sea;
3 Though its (CN)waters roar and foam,
Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah
4 There is a (CO)river whose streams make the (CP)city of God happy,
The holy (CQ)dwelling places of the Most High.
5 God is (CR)in the midst of her, she will not be moved;
God will (CS)help her [v]when morning dawns.
6 The [w]nations (CT)made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered;
He [x](CU)raised His voice, the earth (CV)quaked.
7 The Lord of armies (CW)is with us;
The God of Jacob is (CX)our stronghold. Selah
8 Come, (CY)behold the works of the Lord,
[y]Who has inflicted (CZ)horrific events on the earth.
9 He (DA)makes wars to cease to the end of the earth;
He (DB)breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He (DC)burns the chariots with fire.
10 “[z]Stop striving and (DD)know that I am God;
I will be (DE)exalted among the [aa]nations, I will be exalted on the earth.”
11 The Lord of armies is with us;
The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah
God, the King of the Earth.
For the music director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.
47 (DF)Clap your hands, all you peoples;
(DG)Shout to God with a voice of joy.
2 For the Lord Most High is to be (DH)feared,
A (DI)great King over all the earth.
3 He (DJ)subdues peoples under us
And nations under our feet.
4 He chooses our (DK)inheritance for us,
The (DL)pride of Jacob whom He loves. Selah
5 God has (DM)ascended [ab]with a shout,
The Lord, [ac]with the (DN)sound of a trumpet.
6 (DO)Sing praises to God, sing praises;
Sing praises to (DP)our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the (DQ)King of all the earth;
Sing praises (DR)with a psalm of wisdom.
8 God (DS)reigns over the nations,
God [ad]sits on (DT)His holy throne.
9 The [ae](DU)princes of the people have assembled as the (DV)people of the God of Abraham,
For the (DW)shields of the earth belong to God;
He is (DX)highly exalted.
The Beauty and Glory of Zion.
A Song; a Psalm of the sons of Korah.
48 (DY)Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised
In the (DZ)city of our God, His (EA)holy mountain.
2 (EB)Beautiful in elevation, (EC)the joy of the whole earth,
Is Mount Zion in the far north,
The (ED)city of the great King.
3 In its palaces,
God has made Himself known as a (EE)stronghold.
4 For, behold, the (EF)kings arrived,
They passed by together.
5 They saw it, then they were amazed;
They were (EG)terrified, they fled in a hurry.
6 [af]Panic seized them there,
Anguish, as that of (EH)a woman in childbirth.
7 With the (EI)east wind
You (EJ)smash the (EK)ships of Tarshish.
8 Just as we have heard, so have we seen
In the city of the Lord of armies, in the city of our God;
God will (EL)establish her forever. Selah
9 We have thought over (EM)Your goodness, God,
In the midst of Your temple.
10 As is Your (EN)name, God,
So is Your (EO)praise to the ends of the earth;
Your (EP)right hand is full of righteousness.
11 Mount (EQ)Zion shall be glad,
The (ER)daughters of Judah shall rejoice
Because of Your judgments.
12 Walk around Zion and encircle her;
Count her (ES)towers;
13 Consider her (ET)ramparts;
Go through her palaces,
So that you may (EU)tell of her to the next generation.
14 For [ag]such is God,
Our God forever and ever;
He will (EV)lead us [ah]until death.
The Foolishness of Trusting in Riches.
For the music director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.
49 (EW)Hear this, all peoples;
Listen, all (EX)inhabitants of the world,
2 Both (EY)low and high,
Rich and poor together.
3 My mouth will (EZ)speak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart will be (FA)understanding.
4 I will incline my ear to (FB)a proverb;
(FC)I will [ai]express my (FD)riddle on the harp.
5 Why should I (FE)fear in days of adversity,
When the injustice of those who betray me surrounds me,
6 Those who (FF)trust in their wealth
And boast in the abundance of their riches?
7 No one can by any means (FG)redeem another
Or give God a (FH)ransom for him—
8 For (FI)the redemption of [aj]his soul is priceless,
And he should cease imagining forever—
9 That he might (FJ)live on eternally,
That he might not [ak](FK)undergo decay.
10 For he sees that even (FL)wise people die;
The (FM)foolish and the stupid alike perish
And (FN)leave their wealth to others.
11 Their [al](FO)inner thought is that their houses (FP)are forever
And their dwelling places to all generations;
They have (FQ)named their lands after their own names.
12 But (FR)man in his splendor will not endure;
He is like the animals that [am]perish.
13 This is the (FS)way of those who are foolish,
And of those after them who (FT)approve their words. Selah
14 Like sheep they sink down (FU)to [an]Sheol;
Death will be their shepherd;
And the (FV)upright will rule over them in the morning,
And their form shall be for [ao]Sheol (FW)to consume
[ap]So that they have no lofty home.
15 But God will (FX)redeem my soul from the [aq]power of [ar]Sheol,
For (FY)He will receive me. Selah
16 Do not be afraid (FZ)when a person becomes rich,
When the splendor of his house is increased;
17 For when he dies, he will (GA)take nothing with him;
His [as]wealth will not descend after him.
18 Though while he lives he (GB)congratulates [at]himself—
And though people praise you when you do well for yourself—
19 [au]He will (GC)go to the generation of his fathers;
They will never see (GD)the light.
20 (GE)Mankind in its splendor, yet without understanding,
Is (GF)like the animals that [av]perish.

Psalm 44-49
New International Version
Psalm 44[a]
For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.[b]
1 We have heard it with our ears,(A) O God;
our ancestors have told us(B)
what you did in their days,
in days long ago.(C)
2 With your hand you drove out(D) the nations
and planted(E) our ancestors;
you crushed(F) the peoples
and made our ancestors flourish.(G)
3 It was not by their sword(H) that they won the land,
nor did their arm bring them victory;
it was your right hand,(I) your arm,(J)
and the light(K) of your face, for you loved(L) them.
4 You are my King(M) and my God,(N)
who decrees[c] victories(O) for Jacob.
5 Through you we push back(P) our enemies;
through your name we trample(Q) our foes.
6 I put no trust in my bow,(R)
my sword does not bring me victory;
7 but you give us victory(S) over our enemies,
you put our adversaries to shame.(T)
8 In God we make our boast(U) all day long,(V)
and we will praise your name forever.[d](W)
9 But now you have rejected(X) and humbled us;(Y)
you no longer go out with our armies.(Z)
10 You made us retreat(AA) before the enemy,
and our adversaries have plundered(AB) us.
11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep(AC)
and have scattered us among the nations.(AD)
12 You sold your people for a pittance,(AE)
gaining nothing from their sale.
13 You have made us a reproach(AF) to our neighbors,(AG)
the scorn(AH) and derision(AI) of those around us.
14 You have made us a byword(AJ) among the nations;
the peoples shake their heads(AK) at us.
15 I live in disgrace(AL) all day long,
and my face is covered with shame(AM)
16 at the taunts(AN) of those who reproach and revile(AO) me,
because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.(AP)
17 All this came upon us,
though we had not forgotten(AQ) you;
we had not been false to your covenant.
18 Our hearts had not turned(AR) back;
our feet had not strayed from your path.
19 But you crushed(AS) us and made us a haunt for jackals;(AT)
you covered us over with deep darkness.(AU)
20 If we had forgotten(AV) the name of our God
or spread out our hands to a foreign god,(AW)
21 would not God have discovered it,
since he knows the secrets of the heart?(AX)
22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep(AY) to be slaughtered.(AZ)
23 Awake,(BA) Lord! Why do you sleep?(BB)
Rouse yourself!(BC) Do not reject us forever.(BD)
24 Why do you hide your face(BE)
and forget(BF) our misery and oppression?(BG)
25 We are brought down to the dust;(BH)
our bodies cling to the ground.
26 Rise up(BI) and help us;
rescue(BJ) us because of your unfailing love.(BK)

For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.[f] A wedding song.(BL)
1 My heart is stirred by a noble theme

since God has blessed you forever.(BN)
3 Gird your sword(BO) on your side, you mighty one;(BP)
clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.(BQ)
4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously(BR)
in the cause of truth, humility and justice;(BS)
let your right hand(BT) achieve awesome deeds.(BU)
5 Let your sharp arrows(BV) pierce the hearts(BW) of the king’s enemies;(BX)
let the nations fall beneath your feet.
6 Your throne, O God,[g] will last for ever and ever;(BY)
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
7 You love righteousness(BZ) and hate wickedness;(CA)

by anointing(CB) you with the oil of joy.(CC)
8 All your robes are fragrant(CD) with myrrh(CE) and aloes(CF) and cassia;(CG)
from palaces adorned with ivory(CH)
the music of the strings(CI) makes you glad.
9 Daughters of kings(CJ) are among your honored women;
at your right hand(CK) is the royal bride(CL) in gold of Ophir.(CM)
10 Listen, daughter,(CN) and pay careful attention:(CO)
Forget your people(CP) and your father’s house.
11 Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;(CQ)
honor(CR) him, for he is your lord.(CS)
12 The city of Tyre(CT) will come with a gift,[h](CU)
people of wealth will seek your favor.
13 All glorious(CV) is the princess within her chamber;
her gown is interwoven with gold.(CW)
14 In embroidered garments(CX) she is led to the king;(CY)
her virgin companions(CZ) follow her—
those brought to be with her.
15 Led in with joy and gladness,(DA)
they enter the palace of the king.
16 Your sons will take the place of your fathers;
you will make them princes(DB) throughout the land.
17 I will perpetuate your memory through all generations;(DC)
therefore the nations will praise you(DD) for ever and ever.(DE)
Psalm 46[i]
For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. According to alamoth.[j] A song.
1 God is our refuge(DF) and strength,(DG)
an ever-present(DH) help(DI) in trouble.(DJ)
2 Therefore we will not fear,(DK) though the earth give way(DL)
and the mountains fall(DM) into the heart of the sea,(DN)
3 though its waters roar(DO) and foam(DP)
and the mountains quake(DQ) with their surging.[k]
4 There is a river(DR) whose streams(DS) make glad the city of God,(DT)
the holy place where the Most High(DU) dwells.(DV)
5 God is within her,(DW) she will not fall;(DX)
God will help(DY) her at break of day.
6 Nations(DZ) are in uproar,(EA) kingdoms(EB) fall;
he lifts his voice,(EC) the earth melts.(ED)
8 Come and see what the Lord has done,(EI)
the desolations(EJ) he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars(EK) cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow(EL) and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields[l] with fire.(EM)
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;(EN)
I will be exalted(EO) among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
Psalm 47[m]
For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.
2 For the Lord Most High(ET) is awesome,(EU)
the great King(EV) over all the earth.
3 He subdued(EW) nations under us,
peoples under our feet.
4 He chose our inheritance(EX) for us,
the pride of Jacob,(EY) whom he loved.[n]
5 God has ascended(EZ) amid shouts of joy,(FA)
the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.(FB)
6 Sing praises(FC) to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the King of all the earth;(FD)
sing to him a psalm(FE) of praise.
8 God reigns(FF) over the nations;
God is seated on his holy throne.(FG)
9 The nobles of the nations assemble
as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings[o] of the earth belong to God;(FH)
he is greatly exalted.(FI)
Psalm 48[p]
A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah.
1 Great is the Lord,(FJ) and most worthy of praise,(FK)
in the city of our God,(FL) his holy mountain.(FM)
2 Beautiful(FN) in its loftiness,
the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon[q](FO) is Mount Zion,(FP)
the city of the Great King.(FQ)
3 God is in her citadels;(FR)
he has shown himself to be her fortress.(FS)
4 When the kings joined forces,
when they advanced together,(FT)
5 they saw her and were astounded;
they fled in terror.(FU)
6 Trembling seized(FV) them there,
pain like that of a woman in labor.(FW)
7 You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish(FX)
shattered by an east wind.(FY)
8 As we have heard,
so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
forever.[r](FZ)
9 Within your temple, O God,
we meditate(GA) on your unfailing love.(GB)
10 Like your name,(GC) O God,
your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;(GD)
your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11 Mount Zion rejoices,
the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments.(GE)
12 Walk about Zion, go around her,
count her towers,(GF)
13 consider well her ramparts,(GG)
view her citadels,(GH)
that you may tell of them
to the next generation.(GI)
14 For this God is our God for ever and ever;
he will be our guide(GJ) even to the end.
Psalm 49[s]
For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.
1 Hear(GK) this, all you peoples;(GL)
listen, all who live in this world,(GM)
2 both low and high,(GN)
rich and poor alike:
3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom;(GO)
the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.(GP)
4 I will turn my ear to a proverb;(GQ)
with the harp(GR) I will expound my riddle:(GS)
5 Why should I fear(GT) when evil days come,
when wicked deceivers surround me—
6 those who trust in their wealth(GU)
and boast(GV) of their great riches?(GW)
7 No one can redeem the life of another
or give to God a ransom for them—
8 the ransom(GX) for a life is costly,
no payment is ever enough—(GY)
9 so that they should live on(GZ) forever
and not see decay.(HA)
10 For all can see that the wise die,(HB)
that the foolish and the senseless(HC) also perish,
leaving their wealth(HD) to others.(HE)
11 Their tombs(HF) will remain their houses[t] forever,
their dwellings for endless generations,(HG)
though they had[u] named(HH) lands after themselves.
13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,(HK)
and of their followers, who approve their sayings.[v]
14 They are like sheep and are destined(HL) to die;(HM)
death will be their shepherd
(but the upright will prevail(HN) over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
far from their princely mansions.
15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;(HO)
he will surely take me to himself.(HP)
16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
when the splendor of their houses increases;
17 for they will take nothing(HQ) with them when they die,
their splendor will not descend with them.(HR)
18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed—(HS)
and people praise you when you prosper—
19 they will join those who have gone before them,(HT)
who will never again see the light(HU) of life.
