BOOK 5

The Lord Rescues People from Many Troubles.

107 (A)Give thanks to the Lord, for (B)He is good,
For His mercy is everlasting.
(C)The redeemed of the Lord shall say so,
Those whom He has (D)redeemed from the hand of the enemy
And (E)gathered from the lands,
From the east and from the west,
From the north and from the [a]south.

They (F)wandered in the wilderness in a [b]desert region;
They did not find a way to [c]an inhabited (G)city.
They were hungry [d]and thirsty;
Their (H)souls felt weak within them.
Then they (I)cried out to the Lord in their trouble;
He saved them from their distresses.
He also had them walk on a [e](J)straight way,
To go to [f](K)an inhabited city.
(L)They shall give thanks to the Lord for His mercy,
And for His [g]wonders to the sons of mankind!
For He has (M)satisfied the [h]thirsty soul,
And He has filled the (N)hungry soul with what is good.

10 There were those who (O)lived in darkness and in [i]the shadow of death,
(P)Prisoners in misery and [j]chains,
11 Because they had (Q)rebelled against the words of God
And (R)rejected the (S)plan of the Most High.
12 Therefore He humbled their heart with labor;
They stumbled and there was (T)no one to help.
13 Then they (U)cried out to the Lord in their trouble;
He saved them from their distresses.
14 He (V)brought them out of darkness and [k]the shadow of death
And (W)broke their bands apart.
15 (X)They shall give thanks to the Lord for His mercy,
And for His [l]wonders to the sons of mankind!
16 For He has (Y)shattered gates of bronze
And cut off bars of iron.

17 Fools, because of [m]their rebellious way,
And (Z)because of their guilty deeds, were afflicted.
18 Their (AA)souls loathed all kinds of food,
And they (AB)came close to the (AC)gates of death.
19 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble;
He saved them from their distresses.
20 He (AD)sent His word and (AE)healed them,
And (AF)saved them from their [n]destruction.
21 (AG)They shall give thanks to the Lord for His mercy,
And for His [o]wonders to the sons of mankind!
22 They shall also offer (AH)sacrifices of thanksgiving,
And (AI)tell of His works with joyful singing.

23 Those who (AJ)go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on great waters;
24 They have seen the works of the Lord,
And His [p]wonders in the deep.
25 For He (AK)spoke and raised a (AL)stormy wind,
Which (AM)lifted the waves [q]of the sea.
26 They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;
Their soul (AN)melted away in their misery.
27 They reeled and (AO)staggered like a drunken person,
And [r]were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He brought them out of their distresses.
29 He (AP)caused the storm to be still,
So that the waves [s]of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad because they were quiet,
So He guided them to their desired harbor.
31 (AQ)They shall give thanks to the Lord for His mercy,
And for His [t](AR)wonders to the sons of mankind!
32 They shall also (AS)exalt Him (AT)in the congregation of the people,
And (AU)praise Him at the seat of the elders.

33 He (AV)turns rivers into a [u]wilderness,
And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
34 And a (AW)fruitful land into a (AX)salt waste,
Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35 He (AY)turns a [v]wilderness into a pool of water,
And a dry land into springs of water;
36 And He has the hungry live there,
So that they may establish [w](AZ)an inhabited city,
37 And sow fields and (BA)plant vineyards,
And [x]gather a fruitful harvest.
38 He also blesses them and they (BB)multiply greatly,
And He (BC)does not let their cattle decrease.

39 When they (BD)become few and (BE)lowly
Because of oppression, misery, and sorrow,
40 He (BF)pours contempt upon noblemen
And (BG)makes them wander (BH)in a pathless wasteland.
41 But He (BI)sets the needy [y]securely on high, away from affliction,
And (BJ)makes his families like a flock.
42 The (BK)upright see it and are glad;
But all (BL)injustice shuts its mouth.
43 Who is (BM)wise? He is to pay attention to these things,
And consider the (BN)mercy of the Lord.

God Praised and Pleas to Give Victory.

A Song, a Psalm of David.

108 (BO)My heart is steadfast, God;
I will sing, I will sing praises also with my [z]soul.
Awake, harp and lyre;
I will awaken the dawn!
I will give thanks to You, Lord, among the peoples,
And I will sing praises to You among the nations.
For Your (BP)mercy is great (BQ)above the heavens,
And Your truth reaches to the skies.
(BR)Be exalted above the heavens, God,
And may Your glory be above all the earth.
(BS)So that Your beloved may be rescued,
Save with Your right hand, and answer me!

God has spoken in His [aa]holiness:
“I will triumph, I will divide up Shechem,
And measure out the Valley of Succoth.
Gilead is Mine, Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the [ab]helmet of My head;
(BT)Judah is My [ac]scepter.
Moab is My washbowl;
I will throw My sandal over Edom;
I will shout aloud over Philistia.”

10 (BU)Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who [ad]will lead me to Edom?
11 God, have You Yourself not (BV)rejected us?
And will You not go forth with our armies, God?
12 Give us help against the enemy,
For (BW)deliverance [ae]by man is worthless.
13 [af]Through God we will do valiantly,
And (BX)it is He who will trample down our enemies.

Vengeance Invoked upon Adversaries.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

109 (BY)God of my praise,
(BZ)Do not be silent!
For they have opened a [ag]wicked and (CA)deceitful mouth against me;
They have spoken [ah]against me with a (CB)lying tongue.
They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And have fought against me (CC)without cause.
In return (CD)for my love they act as my accusers;
But (CE)I am in prayer.
So they have [ai](CF)repaid me evil for good,
And (CG)hatred for my love.

Appoint a wicked person over him,
And may an [aj](CH)accuser stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, may he (CI)come out guilty,
And may his (CJ)prayer become sin.
May (CK)his days be few;
May (CL)another take his office.
May his (CM)children be fatherless,
And his (CN)wife a widow.
10 May his (CO)children wander about and beg;
And may they (CP)seek sustenance [ak]far from their ruined homes.
11 May (CQ)the creditor [al]seize everything that he has,
And may (CR)strangers plunder the product of his labor.
12 May there be none to [am](CS)extend kindness to him,
Nor (CT)any to be gracious to his fatherless children.
13 May his (CU)descendants be [an]eliminated;
May their (CV)name be wiped out in a following generation.

14 May (CW)the guilt of his fathers be remembered [ao]before the Lord,
And do not let the sin of his mother be (CX)wiped out.
15 May (CY)they be before the Lord continually,
So that He may (CZ)eliminate their memory from the earth;
16 Because he did not remember to show mercy,
But persecuted the (DA)afflicted and needy person,
And the (DB)despondent in heart, to (DC)put them to death.
17 He also loved cursing, so (DD)it came to him;
And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.
18 But he (DE)clothed himself with cursing as with his garment,
And it (DF)entered [ap]his body like water,
And like oil into his bones.
19 May it be to him as (DG)a garment with which he covers himself,
And as a belt which he constantly (DH)wears around himself.
20 May this be the (DI)reward of my accusers from the Lord,
And of those who (DJ)speak evil against my soul.

21 But You, [aq]God, the Lord, deal kindly with me (DK)for the sake of Your name;
Because (DL)Your mercy is good, rescue me;
22 For (DM)I am afflicted and needy,
And [ar]my heart is (DN)wounded within me.
23 I am passing (DO)like a shadow when it lengthens;
I am shaken off (DP)like the locust.
24 My (DQ)knees [as]are weak from (DR)fasting,
And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness.
25 I also have become a (DS)disgrace to them;
When they see me, they (DT)shake their head.

26 (DU)Help me, Lord my God;
Save me according to Your mercy.
27 [at]And may they (DV)know that this is Your hand;
You, Lord, have done it.
28 (DW)They will curse, but You bless;
When they arise, they will be ashamed,
But Your (DX)servant will be glad.
29 [au]May (DY)my accusers be clothed with dishonor,
And [av]may they (DZ)cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

30 With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the Lord;
And (EA)I will praise Him in the midst of many.
31 For He stands (EB)at the right hand of the needy,
To save him from those who (EC)judge his soul.

The Lord Gives Dominion to the King.

A Psalm of David.

110 (ED)The Lord says to my Lord:
(EE)Sit at My right hand
Until I make (EF)Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
The Lord will stretch out Your strong (EG)scepter from Zion, saying,
(EH)Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”
Your (EI)people [aw]will volunteer freely on the day of Your [ax]power;
(EJ)In [ay]holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,
[az]Your youth are to You as the (EK)dew.

(EL)The Lord has sworn and will (EM)not [ba]change His mind,
“You are a (EN)priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”
The Lord is (EO)at Your right hand;
He [bb]will (EP)shatter kings in the (EQ)day of His wrath.
He will (ER)judge among the nations,
He [bc]will fill them with (ES)corpses,
He [bd]will (ET)shatter the [be]chief men over a broad country.
He will (EU)drink from the brook by the wayside;
Therefore He will (EV)lift up His head.

The Lord Praised for His Goodness.

111 [bf]Praise [bg]the Lord!
I (EW)will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart,
In the (EX)company of the upright and in the assembly.
(EY)Great are the works of the Lord;
They are [bh](EZ)studied by all who delight in them.
[bi](FA)Splendid and majestic is His work,
And (FB)His righteousness endures forever.
He has caused His [bj]wonders [bk]to be remembered;
The Lord is (FC)gracious and compassionate.
He has (FD)given [bl]food to those who [bm]fear Him;
He will (FE)remember His covenant forever.
He has made known to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the inheritance of the nations.

The works of His hands are [bn](FF)truth and justice;
All His precepts (FG)are trustworthy.
They are (FH)upheld forever and ever;
They are performed in [bo](FI)truth and uprightness.
He has sent (FJ)redemption to His people;
He has [bp]ordained His covenant forever;
(FK)Holy and [bq]awesome is His name.
10 The [br](FL)fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
All those who [bs]follow (FM)His commandments have a good understanding;
His (FN)praise endures forever.

Prosperity of One Who Fears the Lord.

112 [bt]Praise [bu]the Lord!
(FO)Blessed is a person who [bv]fears the Lord,
Who greatly (FP)delights in His commandments.
His [bw](FQ)descendants will be mighty [bx]on the earth;
The generation of the (FR)upright will be blessed.
(FS)Wealth and riches are in his house,
And his righteousness endures forever.
Light shines in the darkness (FT)for the upright;
He is (FU)gracious, compassionate, and righteous.
It goes well for a person who (FV)is gracious and lends;
He will [by]maintain his cause in judgment.
For he will (FW)never be shaken;
The (FX)righteous will be [bz]remembered forever.

He will not fear (FY)bad news;
His (FZ)heart is steadfast, (GA)trusting in the Lord.
His (GB)heart is firm, he (GC)will not fear,
[ca]But will (GD)look with satisfaction on his enemies.
[cb]He (GE)has given freely to the poor,
His righteousness endures forever;
His (GF)horn will be exalted in honor.

10 The (GG)wicked will see it and be [cc]vexed,
He will (GH)gnash his teeth and (GI)melt away;
The (GJ)desire of the wicked will perish.

The Lord Exalts the Humble.

113 [cd]Praise [ce]the Lord!
(GK)Praise Him, you (GL)servants of the Lord,
Praise the name of the Lord.
(GM)Blessed be the name of the Lord
From this time on and forever.
(GN)From [cf]the rising of the sun to its setting,
The (GO)name of the Lord is to be praised.
The Lord is (GP)high above all nations;
His (GQ)glory is above the heavens.

(GR)Who is like the Lord our God,
Who (GS)is enthroned on high,
Who (GT)looks far down to
The heavens and the earth?
He (GU)raises the poor from the dust,
He lifts the needy from the garbage heap,
To (GV)seat them with noblemen,
With the noblemen of His people.
He (GW)has the infertile woman live in the house
As a joyful mother of children.
[cg]Praise [ch]the Lord!

God’s Rescue of Israel from Egypt.

114 When Israel went forth (GX)from Egypt,
The house of Jacob from a people of a (GY)foreign language,
Judah became (GZ)His sanctuary;
Israel, (HA)His dominion.

The (HB)sea looked and fled;
The (HC)Jordan turned back.
The mountains (HD)skipped like rams,
The hills, like lambs.
What (HE)ails you, sea, that you flee?
Jordan, that you turn back?
Mountains, that you skip like rams?
Hills, like lambs?

(HF)Tremble, earth, before the Lord,
Before the God of Jacob,
Who (HG)turned the rock into a (HH)pool of water,
The (HI)flint into a fountain of water.

Heathen Idols Contrasted with the Lord.

115 (HJ)Not to us, Lord, not to us,
But (HK)to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy, because of Your [ci]truth.
(HL)Why should the nations say,
(HM)Where, then, is their God?”
But our (HN)God is in the heavens;
He (HO)does whatever He pleases.
Their (HP)idols are silver and gold,
The (HQ)work of human hands.
They have mouths, but they (HR)cannot speak;
They have eyes, but they cannot see;
They have ears, but they cannot hear;
They have noses, but they cannot smell;
[cj]They have hands, but they cannot feel;
[ck]They have feet, but they cannot walk;
They cannot make a sound with their throat.
(HS)Those who make them [cl]will become like them,
Everyone who trusts in them.

(HT)Israel, (HU)trust in the Lord;
He is their (HV)help and their shield.
10 House of (HW)Aaron, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
11 You who [cm](HX)fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
12 The Lord (HY)has been mindful of us; He will bless us.
He will bless the house of Israel;
He will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will (HZ)bless those who [cn]fear the Lord,
(IA)The small together with the great.
14 May the Lord (IB)increase you,
You and your children.
15 May you be blessed of the Lord,
(IC)Maker of heaven and earth.

16 The heavens are (ID)the heavens of the Lord,
But (IE)the earth He has given to the sons of mankind.
17 The (IF)dead do not praise [co]the Lord,
Nor do any who go down into (IG)silence;
18 But as for us, we will (IH)bless [cp]the Lord
From this time and forever.
[cq]Praise [cr]the Lord!

Thanksgiving for Rescue from Death.

116 (II)I love the Lord, because He (IJ)hears
My voice and my pleas.
Because He has (IK)inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.
The (IL)snares of death encompassed me
And the [cs]terrors of [ct]Sheol [cu]came upon me;
I found distress and sorrow.
Then (IM)I called upon the name of the Lord:
“Please, Lord, (IN)save my [cv]life!”

(IO)Gracious is the Lord, and (IP)righteous;
Yes, our God is (IQ)compassionate.
The Lord watches over (IR)the simple;
I was (IS)brought low, and He saved me.
Return to your (IT)rest, my soul,
For the Lord has (IU)dealt generously with you.
For You have (IV)rescued my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from stumbling.
I shall walk before the Lord
In the [cw](IW)land of the living.
10 I (IX)believed when I said,
“I am (IY)greatly afflicted.”
11 I (IZ)said in my alarm,
(JA)All people are liars.”

12 What shall I (JB)repay to the Lord
For all His (JC)benefits [cx]to me?
13 I will lift up the (JD)cup of salvation,
And (JE)call upon the name of the Lord.
14 I will (JF)pay my vows to the Lord;
May it be (JG)in the presence of all His people!
15 (JH)Precious in the sight of the Lord
Is the death of His godly ones.
16 O Lord, [cy]I surely am (JI)Your slave,
I am Your slave, the (JJ)son of Your female slave,
You have (JK)unfastened my restraints.
17 I will offer You (JL)a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And (JM)call upon the name of the Lord.
18 I will (JN)pay my vows to the Lord,
May it be in the presence of all His people,
19 In the (JO)courtyards of the Lords house,
In the midst of you, (JP)Jerusalem!
[cz]Praise [da]the Lord!

A Psalm of Praise.

117 (JQ)Praise the Lord, all nations;
Sing His praises, all peoples!
For His (JR)mercy toward us is [db]great,
And the [dc](JS)truth of the Lord is everlasting.
[dd]Praise [de]the Lord!

Thanksgiving for the Lords Saving Goodness.

118 (JT)Give thanks to the Lord, for (JU)He is good;
For His mercy is everlasting.
Let (JV)Israel say,
“His mercy is everlasting.”
Oh let the (JW)house of Aaron say,
“His mercy is everlasting.”
Let those (JX)who [df]fear the Lord say,
“His mercy is everlasting.”

From my (JY)distress I called upon [dg]the Lord;
[dh]The Lord answered me and (JZ)put me in an open space.
The Lord is (KA)for me; I will (KB)not fear;
(KC)What can man do to me?
The Lord is for me (KD)among those who help me;
Therefore I will (KE)look with satisfaction on those who hate me.
It is (KF)better to take refuge in the Lord
Than to trust in people.
It is (KG)better to take refuge in the Lord
Than to trust in noblemen.

10 All nations (KH)surrounded me;
In the name of the Lord I will certainly (KI)fend them off.
11 They (KJ)surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me;
In the name of the Lord I will certainly fend them off.
12 They surrounded me (KK)like bees;
They were extinguished like a (KL)fire of thorn bushes;
In the name of the Lord I will certainly fend them off.
13 You (KM)pushed me violently so that I [di]was falling,
But the Lord (KN)helped me.
14 [dj](KO)The Lord is my strength and song,
And He has become (KP)my salvation.

15 The sound of (KQ)joyful shouting and salvation is in the tents of the righteous;
The (KR)right hand of the Lord performs valiantly.
16 The (KS)right hand of the Lord is exalted;
The right hand of the Lord performs valiantly.
17 I (KT)will not die, but live,
And (KU)tell of the works of [dk]the Lord.
18 [dl]The Lord has (KV)disciplined me severely,
But He has (KW)not turned me over to death.

19 (KX)Open the gates of righteousness to me;
I will enter through them, I will give thanks to [dm]the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
The (KY)righteous will enter through it.
21 I will give thanks to You, for You have (KZ)answered me,
And You have (LA)become my salvation.

22 A (LB)stone which the builders rejected
Has become the [dn]chief cornerstone.
23 This came about from the Lord;
It is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day which the Lord has made;
Let’s (LC)rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Please, O Lord, (LD)do save us;
Please, O Lord, do send (LE)prosperity!
26 (LF)Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord;
We have (LG)blessed you from the house of the Lord.
27 (LH)The Lord is God, and He has given us (LI)light;
Bind the festival sacrifice [do]to the (LJ)horns of the altar with cords.
28 (LK)You are my God, and I give thanks to You;
You are my God, (LL)I exalt You.
29 (LM)Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His mercy is everlasting.

Meditations and Prayers Relating to the Law of God.

Aleph

You have [dr](LT)ordained Your precepts,
[ds]That we are to keep them diligently.
Oh that my (LU)ways may be established
To (LV)keep Your statutes!

Do not hide Your commandments from me.
20 My soul is crushed [dw](MN)with longing
For Your ordinances at all times.
21 You (MO)rebuke the arrogant, [dx]the (MP)cursed,
Who (MQ)wander from Your commandments.
22 (MR)Take disgrace and contempt away from me,
For I (MS)comply with Your testimonies.
23 Even though (MT)rulers sit and speak against me,
Your servant (MU)meditates on Your statutes.
24 Your testimonies also are my (MV)delight;
They are [dy]my advisers.

Daleth

25 My (MW)soul clings to the dust;
(MX)Revive me (MY)according to Your word.

(MZ)Teach me Your statutes.

I have [ea]placed Your judgments before me.

For You will (NE)enlarge my heart.

He

And keep it (NI)with all my heart.

[ec]As that which produces reverence for You.

For Your judgments are good.
40 Behold, I (NR)long for Your precepts;
Revive me through Your righteousness.

Vav

41 May Your (NS)favor also come to me, Lord,
Your salvation (NT)according to Your [ed]word;
42 So that I will have an (NU)answer for one who (NV)taunts me,
For I trust in Your word.
43 And do not take the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,
For I [ee](NW)wait for Your judgments.
44 So I will (NX)keep Your Law continually,
Forever and ever.
45 And I will (NY)walk [ef]at liberty,
For I (NZ)seek Your precepts.
46 I will also speak of Your testimonies (OA)before kings
And shall not be ashamed.
47 I will (OB)delight in Your commandments,
Which I (OC)love.
48 And I shall lift up my hands to Your commandments,
Which I (OD)love;
And I will (OE)meditate on Your statutes.

Zayin

49 Remember the word to Your servant,
[eg]In which You have made me hope.
50 This is my (OF)comfort in my misery,
That Your word has [eh]revived me.
51 The arrogant (OG)utterly deride me,
Yet I do not (OH)turn aside from Your Law.
52 I have (OI)remembered Your judgments from [ei]of old, Lord,
And comfort myself.
53 Burning (OJ)indignation has seized me because of the wicked,
Who (OK)abandon Your Law.
54 Your statutes are my songs
In the house of my (OL)pilgrimage.
55 Lord, I (OM)remember Your name (ON)in the night,
And keep Your Law.
56 This has become mine,
[ej]That I (OO)comply with Your precepts.

Heth

57 The Lord is my (OP)portion;
I have [ek]promised to (OQ)keep Your words.
58 I (OR)sought Your favor (OS)with all my heart;
(OT)Be gracious to me (OU)according to Your [el]word.
59 I (OV)considered my ways
And turned my feet to Your testimonies.
60 I hurried and did not delay
To keep Your commandments.
61 The (OW)snares of the wicked have surrounded me,
But I have (OX)not forgotten Your Law.
62 At (OY)midnight I will rise to give thanks to You
Because of Your (OZ)righteous judgments.
63 I am a (PA)companion to all those who [em]fear You,
And to those who keep Your precepts.
64 (PB)The earth is full of Your goodness, Lord;
(PC)Teach me Your statutes.

Teth

65 You have treated Your servant well,
Lord, according to Your word.
66 Teach me good [en](PD)discernment and knowledge,
For I believe in Your commandments.
67 (PE)Before I was afflicted I went astray,
But now I keep Your word.
68 You are (PF)good and You (PG)do good;
(PH)Teach me Your statutes.
69 The arrogant [eo]have (PI)forged a lie against me;
With all my heart I will (PJ)comply with Your precepts.
70 Their heart is (PK)insensitive, like fat,
But I (PL)delight in Your Law.
71 It is (PM)good for me that I was afflicted,
So that I may learn Your statutes.
72 The (PN)Law of Your mouth is better to me
Than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Yodh

73 (PO)Your hands made me and [ep]fashioned me;
(PP)Give me understanding, so that I may learn Your commandments.
74 May those who [eq]fear You (PQ)see me and be glad,
Because I [er](PR)wait for Your word.
75 I know, Lord, that Your judgments are (PS)righteous,
And that You have afflicted me (PT)in faithfulness.
76 May Your favor [es]comfort me,
According to Your [et]word to Your servant.
77 May (PU)Your compassion come to me so that I may live,
For Your Law is my (PV)delight.
78 May (PW)the arrogant be put to shame, because they lead me astray (PX)with a lie;
But I shall (PY)meditate on Your precepts.
79 May those who [eu]fear You turn to me,
And those who know Your testimonies.
80 May my heart be [ev](PZ)blameless in Your statutes,
So that I will not (QA)be ashamed.

Kaph

81 My (QB)soul languishes for Your salvation;
I [ew](QC)wait for Your word.
82 My (QD)eyes fail with longing for Your [ex]word,
[ey]While I say, “When will You comfort me?”
83 Though I have (QE)become like a wineskin in the smoke,
I do (QF)not forget Your statutes.
84 How many are the (QG)days of Your servant?
When will You (QH)execute judgment on those who persecute me?
85 The arrogant have (QI)dug pits for me,
People who are not in accord with Your Law.
86 All Your commandments are (QJ)faithful;
They have (QK)persecuted me with a lie; (QL)help me!
87 They almost destroyed me on earth,
But as for me, I (QM)did not abandon Your precepts.
88 Revive me according to Your faithfulness,
So that I may keep the testimony of Your mouth.

Lamedh

89 (QN)Forever, Lord,
Your word stands in heaven.
90 Your (QO)faithfulness continues [ez]throughout generations;
You (QP)established the earth, and it (QQ)stands.
91 They stand this day by Your (QR)ordinances,
For (QS)all things are Your servants.
92 If Your Law had not been my (QT)delight,
Then I would have perished (QU)in my misery.
93 I will (QV)never forget Your precepts,
For by them You have [fa](QW)revived me.
94 I am Yours, (QX)save me;
For I have (QY)sought Your precepts.
95 The wicked (QZ)wait for me to destroy me;
I will diligently consider Your testimonies.
96 I have seen [fb]a limit to all perfection;
Your commandment is exceedingly broad.

Mem

97 How I (RA)love Your Law!
It is my (RB)meditation all the day.
98 Your (RC)commandments make me wiser than my enemies,
For they are ever [fc]mine.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
For Your testimonies are my (RD)meditation.
100 I understand (RE)more than those who are old,
Because I have (RF)complied with Your precepts.
101 I have (RG)restrained my feet from every evil way,
So that I may keep Your word.
102 I have not (RH)turned aside from Your judgments,
For You Yourself have taught me.
103 How (RI)sweet are Your [fd]words to my [fe]taste!
Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 From Your precepts I (RJ)get understanding;
Therefore I (RK)hate every false way.

Nun

105 Your word is a (RL)lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.
106 I have (RM)sworn and I will confirm it,
That I will keep Your righteous judgments.
107 I am exceedingly (RN)afflicted;
[ff](RO)Revive me, Lord, according to Your word.
108 Be pleased to accept the (RP)[fg]voluntary offerings of my mouth, Lord,
And (RQ)teach me Your judgments.
109 My [fh](RR)life is continually [fi]in my hand,
Yet I do not (RS)forget Your Law.
110 The wicked have (RT)set a [fj]trap for me,
Yet I have not (RU)wandered from Your precepts.
111 I have (RV)inherited Your testimonies forever,
For they are the (RW)joy of my heart.
112 I have (RX)inclined my heart to perform Your statutes
Forever, even (RY)to the end.

Samekh

113 I hate those who are (RZ)double-minded,
But I love Your (SA)Law.
114 You are my (SB)hiding place and my (SC)shield;
I [fk](SD)wait for Your word.
115 (SE)Leave me, you evildoers,
So that I may (SF)comply with the commandments of my God.
116 (SG)Sustain me according to Your [fl]word, that I may live;
And (SH)do not let me be [fm]ashamed of my hope.
117 Sustain me so that I may be (SI)safe,
That I may (SJ)have regard for Your statutes continually.
118 You have [fn]rejected all those (SK)who stray from Your statutes,
For their deceitfulness is [fo]useless.
119 You have [fp]removed all the wicked of the earth like [fq](SL)impurities;
Therefore I (SM)love Your testimonies.
120 My flesh [fr](SN)trembles from the fear of You,
And I am (SO)afraid of Your judgments.

Ayin

121 I have (SP)done justice and righteousness;
Do not leave me to my oppressors.
122 Be (SQ)a guarantor for Your servant for good;
Do not let the arrogant (SR)oppress me.
123 My (SS)eyes fail with longing for Your salvation,
And for Your righteous [fs]word.
124 Deal with Your servant (ST)according to Your graciousness,
And (SU)teach me Your statutes.
125 (SV)I am Your servant; (SW)give me understanding,
So that I may know Your testimonies.
126 It is time for the Lord to (SX)act,
For they have broken Your Law.
127 Therefore I (SY)love Your commandments
Above gold, yes, above pure gold.
128 Therefore I carefully follow all Your (SZ)precepts concerning everything,
I (TA)hate every false way.

Pe

129 Your testimonies are (TB)wonderful;
Therefore my soul (TC)complies with them.
130 The (TD)unfolding of Your words gives light;
It gives (TE)understanding to the simple.
131 I (TF)opened my mouth wide and (TG)panted,
For I (TH)longed for Your commandments.
132 (TI)Turn to me and be gracious to me,
As is right for those who love Your name.
133 Establish my (TJ)footsteps in Your [ft]word,
And do not let any [fu]wrongdoing (TK)have power over me.
134 (TL)Redeem me from oppression by man,
So that I may keep Your precepts.
135 (TM)Make Your face shine upon Your servant,
And (TN)teach me Your statutes.
136 My eyes [fv]shed (TO)streams of water,
Because they (TP)do not keep Your Law.

Tsadhe

137 (TQ)You are righteous, Lord,
And Your judgments are right.
138 You have commanded Your testimonies in (TR)righteousness
And great (TS)faithfulness.
139 My (TT)zeal has [fw]consumed me,
Because my enemies have forgotten Your words.
140 Your (TU)word is very [fx]pure,
Therefore Your servant (TV)loves it.
141 I am small and (TW)despised,
Yet I do not (TX)forget Your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
And (TY)Your Law is truth.
143 Trouble and anguish have [fy]come upon me,
Yet Your commandments are my (TZ)delight.
144 Your (UA)testimonies are righteous forever;
(UB)Give me understanding that I may live.

Qoph

145 I cried out (UC)with all my heart; answer me, Lord!
I will (UD)comply with Your statutes.
146 I cried to You; (UE)save me
And I shall keep Your testimonies.
147 I [fz](UF)rise before dawn and cry for help;
I [ga]wait for Your words.
148 My eyes anticipate the (UG)night watches,
So that I may (UH)meditate on Your [gb]word.
149 Hear my voice (UI)according to Your faithfulness;
(UJ)Revive me, Lord, according to Your judgments.
150 Those who follow after wickedness approach;
They are far from Your Law.
151 You are (UK)near, Lord,
And all Your commandments are (UL)truth.
152 From long ago I have (UM)known from Your testimonies
That You have founded them (UN)forever.

Resh

153 (UO)Look at my (UP)affliction and rescue me,
For I have not (UQ)forgotten Your Law.
154 (UR)Plead my cause and (US)redeem me;
Revive me according to Your [gc]word.
155 Salvation is (UT)far from the wicked,
For they (UU)do not seek Your statutes.
156 [gd](UV)Great are Your mercies, Lord;
Revive me according to Your judgments.
157 Many are my (UW)persecutors and my enemies,
Yet I do not (UX)turn aside from Your testimonies.
158 I see the (UY)treacherous and (UZ)loathe them,
Because they do not keep Your word.
159 Consider how I (VA)love Your precepts;
(VB)Revive me, Lord, according to Your faithfulness.
160 The (VC)sum of Your word is (VD)truth,
And every one of Your righteous judgments (VE)is everlasting.

Shin

161 (VF)Rulers persecute me without cause,
But my heart (VG)stands in awe of Your words.
162 I (VH)rejoice at Your [ge]word,
Like one who (VI)finds great plunder.
163 I (VJ)hate and loathe falsehood,
But I (VK)love Your Law.
164 Seven times a day I praise You
Because of Your (VL)righteous judgments.
165 Those who love Your Law have (VM)great peace,
And [gf](VN)nothing causes them to stumble.
166 I (VO)hope for Your salvation, Lord,
And do Your commandments.
167 My (VP)soul keeps Your testimonies,
And I (VQ)love them exceedingly.
168 I (VR)keep Your precepts and Your testimonies,
For all my (VS)ways are before You.

Tav

169 Let my (VT)cry [gg]come before You, Lord;
(VU)Give me understanding (VV)according to Your word.
170 Let my (VW)pleading come before You;
(VX)Save me according to Your [gh]word.
171 Let my (VY)lips pour out praise,
For You (VZ)teach me Your statutes.
172 Let my (WA)tongue sing about Your [gi]word,
For all Your (WB)commandments are righteousness.
173 Let Your (WC)hand be [gj]ready to help me,
For I have (WD)chosen Your precepts.
174 I (WE)long for Your salvation, Lord,
And Your Law is my (WF)delight.
175 Let my (WG)soul live that it may praise You,
And let Your ordinances help me.
176 I have (WH)wandered about like a lost sheep; search for Your servant,
For I do (WI)not forget Your commandments.

Prayer for Rescue from the Treacherous.

A Song of [gk]Ascents.

120 (WJ)I cried to the Lord in my trouble,
And He answered me.
Rescue my soul, Lord, from (WK)lying lips,
From a (WL)deceitful tongue.
What will He give to you, and what more will He do to you,
You (WM)deceitful tongue?
(WN)Sharp arrows of the warrior,
With the burning (WO)coals of the broom tree!

Woe to me, for I reside in (WP)Meshech,
For I have settled among the (WQ)tents of (WR)Kedar!
Too long has my soul had its dwelling
With those who (WS)hate peace.
I (WT)am for peace, but when I speak,
They are (WU)for war.

The Lord, the Keeper of Israel.

A Song of Ascents.

121 I will (WV)raise my eyes to (WW)the mountains;
From where will my help come?
My (WX)help comes from the Lord,
Who (WY)made heaven and earth.
He will not (WZ)allow your foot to slip;
He who (XA)watches over you will not slumber.
Behold, He who watches over Israel
Will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your [gl](XB)protector;
The Lord is your (XC)shade on your right hand.
The (XD)sun will not [gm]beat down on you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord will [gn](XE)protect you from all evil;
He will keep your soul.
The Lord will [go](XF)guard your going out and your coming in
(XG)From this time and forever.

Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem.

A Song of Ascents, of David.

122 I was glad when they said to me,
“Let’s (XH)go to the house of the Lord.”
Our feet are standing
Within your (XI)gates, Jerusalem,
Jerusalem, that has been (XJ)built
As a city that is (XK)firmly joined together;
To which the tribes (XL)go up, the tribes of [gp]the Lord
[gq]An ordinance for Israel—
To give thanks to the name of the Lord.
For (XM)thrones were set there for judgment,
The thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the (XN)peace of Jerusalem:
“May they prosper who (XO)love you.
May peace be within your (XP)walls,
And prosperity within your (XQ)palaces.”
For the sake of my (XR)brothers and my friends,
I will now say, “(XS)May peace be within you.”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will (XT)seek your good.

Prayer for the Lords Help.

A Song of Ascents.

123 To You I have (XU)raised my eyes,
You who (XV)are enthroned in the heavens!
Behold, as the eyes of (XW)servants look to the hand of their master,
As the eyes of a female servant to the hand of her mistress,
So our (XX)eyes look to the Lord our God,
Until He is gracious to us.

(XY)Be gracious to us, Lord, be gracious to us,
For we have had much more than enough of (XZ)contempt.
Our soul has had much more than enough
Of the (YA)scoffing of (YB)those who are at ease,
And with the (YC)contempt of the proud.

Praise for Rescue from Enemies.

A Song of Ascents, of David.

124 (YD)Had it not been the Lord who was on our side,”
(YE)Let Israel say,
“Had it not been the Lord who was on our side
When people rose up against us,
Then they would have (YF)swallowed us alive,
When their (YG)anger was kindled against us;
Then the (YH)waters would have flooded over us,
The stream would have [gr]swept over our souls;
Then the (YI)raging waters would have [gs]swept over our souls.”

Blessed be the Lord,
Who has not given us [gt]to be (YJ)torn by their teeth.
Our souls have (YK)escaped (YL)like a bird from the trapper’s (YM)snare;
The snare is broken and we have escaped.
Our (YN)help is in the name of the Lord,
Who (YO)made heaven and earth.

The Lord Surrounds His People.

A Song of Ascents.

125 Those who trust in the Lord
Are like Mount Zion, which (YP)cannot be moved but (YQ)remains forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
So (YR)the Lord surrounds His people
(YS)From this time and forever.
For the (YT)scepter of wickedness will not rest upon the [gu]land of the righteous,
So that the righteous (YU)will not extend their hands to do wrong.

(YV)Do good, Lord, to those who are good
And to those who are (YW)upright in their hearts.
But as for those who (YX)turn aside to their (YY)crooked ways,
The Lord will lead them away with those who (YZ)practice injustice.
(ZA)Peace be upon Israel.

Thanksgiving for Return from Captivity.

A Song of Ascents.

126 When the Lord (ZB)brought back [gv]the captives of Zion,
We were (ZC)like those who dream.
Then our (ZD)mouth was filled with laughter
And our (ZE)tongue with joyful shouting;
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has (ZF)done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us;
We are (ZG)joyful.

Restore our fortunes, Lord,
As the [gw](ZH)streams in the [gx]South.
Those who sow in (ZI)tears shall harvest with (ZJ)joyful shouting.
One who goes here and there weeping, carrying his bag of seed,
Shall indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

Prosperity Comes from the Lord.

A Song of Ascents, of Solomon.

127 Unless the Lord (ZK)builds a house,
They who build it labor in vain;
Unless the Lord (ZL)guards a city,
The watchman stays awake in vain.
It is futile for you to rise up early,
To [gy]stay up late,
To (ZM)eat the bread of painful labor;
This is how He gives to His (ZN)beloved (ZO)sleep.

Behold, (ZP)children are a [gz]gift of the Lord,
The (ZQ)fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a (ZR)warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
(ZS)Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them;
(ZT)They will not be ashamed
When they (ZU)speak with their enemies (ZV)in the gate.

Blessedness of the Fear of the Lord.

A Song of Ascents.

128 (ZW)Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
Who (ZX)walks in His ways.
When you (ZY)eat the (ZZ)fruit of the labor of your hands,
You will be happy and (AAA)it will go well for you.
Your wife will be like a (AAB)fruitful vine
[ha]Within your house,
Your children like (AAC)olive plants
Around your table.
Behold, for so shall a man
Who fears the Lord be blessed.

(AAD)The Lord bless you (AAE)from Zion,
And may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
Indeed, may you see your (AAF)children’s children.
(AAG)Peace be upon Israel!

Prayer for the Overthrow of Zion’s Enemies.

A Song of Ascents.

129 [hb]Many times they have (AAH)attacked me from my (AAI)youth up,”
(AAJ)Let Israel say,
[hc]Many times they have attacked me from my youth up;
Yet they have (AAK)not prevailed against me.
The plowers plowed upon my back;
They lengthened their furrows.”
The Lord (AAL)is righteous;
He has cut up the (AAM)ropes of the wicked.

May all who (AAN)hate Zion
Be (AAO)put to shame and turned backward;
May they be like (AAP)grass upon the housetops,
Which withers before it [hd]grows up;
With which the harvester does not fill his [he]hand,
Or the binder of sheaves his [hf](AAQ)arms;
Nor do those who pass by say,
“The (AAR)blessing of the Lord be upon you;
We bless you in the name of the Lord.”

Hope in the Lords Forgiving Love.

A Song of Ascents.

130 Out of the (AAS)depths I have cried to You, Lord.
Lord, (AAT)hear my voice!
Let (AAU)Your ears be attentive
To the (AAV)sound of my pleadings.
If You, [hg]Lord, were to keep account of guilty deeds,
Lord, who could (AAW)stand?
But there is (AAX)forgiveness with You,
So that You may be [hh](AAY)revered.

I wait for the Lord, my (AAZ)soul waits,
And I [hi]wait (ABA)for His word.
My soul waits in hope for the Lord
More than the watchmen (ABB)for the morning;
Yes, more than the watchmen for the morning.
Israel, (ABC)wait for the Lord;
For with the Lord there is (ABD)mercy,
And with Him is (ABE)abundant redemption.
And He will (ABF)redeem Israel
From all his guilty deeds.

Childlike Trust in the Lord.

A Song of Ascents, of David.

131 Lord, my heart is not (ABG)proud, nor my eyes (ABH)arrogant;
Nor do I [hj]involve myself in (ABI)great matters,
Or in things (ABJ)too [hk]difficult for me.
I have certainly (ABK)soothed and quieted my soul;
Like a weaned (ABL)child resting [hl]against his mother,
My soul [hm]within me is like a weaned child.
Israel, (ABM)wait for the Lord
(ABN)From this time on and forever.

Prayer for the Lords Blessing upon the Sanctuary.

A Song of Ascents.

132 Remember, Lord, in David’s behalf,
All (ABO)his affliction;
How he swore to the Lord
And vowed to (ABP)the Mighty One of Jacob,
“I certainly will not [hn]enter (ABQ)my house,
Nor [ho]lie on my bed;
I will not (ABR)give sleep to my eyes
Or slumber to my eyelids,
Until I find a (ABS)place for the Lord,
[hp]A dwelling place for (ABT)the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Behold, we heard about it in (ABU)Ephrathah,
We found it in the (ABV)field of [hq]Jaar.
Let’s go into His [hr](ABW)dwelling place;
Let’s (ABX)worship at His (ABY)footstool.
(ABZ)Arise, Lord, to Your (ACA)resting place,
You and the ark of Your (ACB)strength.
May Your priests be (ACC)clothed with righteousness,
And may Your (ACD)godly ones sing for joy.

10 For the sake of Your servant David,
Do not turn away the face of Your (ACE)anointed.
11 The Lord has (ACF)sworn to David
A truth from which He will not turn back:
“I will set upon your throne one (ACG)from the fruit of your body.
12 If your sons will keep My covenant
And My testimony which I will teach them,
Their sons also will (ACH)sit upon your throne forever.”

13 For the Lord has (ACI)chosen Zion;
He has (ACJ)desired it as His dwelling place.
14 “This is My (ACK)resting place forever;
Here I will (ACL)dwell, for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly (ACM)bless her food;
I will (ACN)satisfy her needy with bread.
16 I will also clothe her (ACO)priests with salvation,
And her (ACP)godly ones will sing aloud for joy.
17 I will make the (ACQ)horn of David spring forth there;
I have prepared a (ACR)lamp for My anointed.
18 I will (ACS)clothe his enemies with shame,
But upon himself his (ACT)crown will gleam.”

The Excellency of Brotherly Unity.

A Song of Ascents, of David.

133 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For (ACU)brothers to live together in unity!
It is like the precious (ACV)oil on the head,
Running down upon the beard,
As on Aaron’s beard,
The oil which ran down upon the (ACW)edge of his robes.
It is like the (ACX)dew of (ACY)Hermon
Coming down upon the (ACZ)mountains of Zion;
For the Lord (ADA)commanded the blessing there—(ADB)life forever.

Greetings of Night Watchers.

A Song of Ascents.

134 Behold, (ADC)bless the Lord, all you (ADD)servants of the Lord,
Who [hs](ADE)serve (ADF)by night in the house of the Lord!
(ADG)Lift up your hands to the (ADH)sanctuary
And bless the Lord.
May the Lord (ADI)bless you from Zion,
He who (ADJ)made heaven and earth.

Praise the Lords Wonderful Works. Futility of Idols.

135 [ht](ADK)Praise [hu]the Lord!
Praise the name of the Lord;
Praise Him, you (ADL)servants of the Lord,
You who stand in the house of the Lord,
In the (ADM)courtyards of the house of our God!
[hv]Praise [hw]the Lord, for (ADN)the Lord is good;
(ADO)Sing praises to His name, (ADP)for it is lovely.
For [hx]the Lord has (ADQ)chosen Jacob for Himself,
Israel as His (ADR)own possession.

For I know that (ADS)the Lord is great
And that our Lord is (ADT)above all gods.
(ADU)Whatever the Lord pleases, He does,
In heaven and on earth, in the seas and in all the ocean depths.
[hy]He (ADV)causes the [hz]mist to ascend from the ends of the earth,
[ia]He (ADW)makes lightning for the rain;
[ib]He (ADX)brings forth the wind from His treasuries.

[ic]He (ADY)struck the firstborn of Egypt,
[id]Both human firstborn and animal.
[ie]He sent (ADZ)signs and wonders into your midst, Egypt,
Upon (AEA)Pharaoh and all his servants.
10 [if](AEB)He (AEC)struck many nations
And brought death to mighty kings,
11 (AED)Sihon, king of the Amorites,
(AEE)Og, king of Bashan,
And (AEF)all the kingdoms of Canaan;
12 And He (AEG)gave their land as an inheritance,
An inheritance to His people Israel.
13 Your (AEH)name, Lord, is everlasting,
The mention of You, Lord, is [ig]throughout all generations.
14 For the Lord will (AEI)judge His people
And (AEJ)will have compassion on His servants.
15 The (AEK)idols of the nations are nothing but silver and gold,
The work of human hands.
16 They have mouths, but they do not speak;
They have eyes, but they do not see;
17 They have ears, but they do not hear,
Nor is there any breath at all in their mouths.
18 Those who make them will become like them,
Yes, everyone who trusts in them.

19 House of (AEL)Israel, bless the Lord;
House of Aaron, bless the Lord;
20 House of Levi, bless the Lord;
You (AEM)who [ih]revere the Lord, bless the Lord.
21 Blessed be the Lord (AEN)from Zion,
Who (AEO)dwells in Jerusalem.
[ii]Praise [ij]the Lord!

Thanks for the Lords Goodness to Israel.

136 (AEP)Give thanks to the Lord, for (AEQ)He is good,

Psalms 107–150

Psalm 107

Give thanks to the Lord,(A) for he is good;(B)
    his love endures forever.

Let the redeemed(C) of the Lord tell their story—
    those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
those he gathered(D) from the lands,
    from east and west, from north and south.[a]

Some wandered in desert(E) wastelands,
    finding no way to a city(F) where they could settle.
They were hungry(G) and thirsty,(H)
    and their lives ebbed away.
Then they cried out(I) to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them by a straight way(J)
    to a city(K) where they could settle.
Let them give thanks(L) to the Lord for his unfailing love(M)
    and his wonderful deeds(N) for mankind,
for he satisfies(O) the thirsty
    and fills the hungry with good things.(P)

10 Some sat in darkness,(Q) in utter darkness,
    prisoners suffering(R) in iron chains,(S)
11 because they rebelled(T) against God’s commands
    and despised(U) the plans(V) of the Most High.
12 So he subjected them to bitter labor;
    they stumbled, and there was no one to help.(W)
13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them(X) from their distress.
14 He brought them out of darkness,(Y) the utter darkness,(Z)
    and broke away their chains.(AA)
15 Let them give thanks(AB) to the Lord for his unfailing love(AC)
    and his wonderful deeds(AD) for mankind,
16 for he breaks down gates of bronze
    and cuts through bars of iron.

17 Some became fools(AE) through their rebellious ways(AF)
    and suffered affliction(AG) because of their iniquities.
18 They loathed all food(AH)
    and drew near the gates of death.(AI)
19 Then they cried(AJ) to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them(AK) from their distress.
20 He sent out his word(AL) and healed them;(AM)
    he rescued(AN) them from the grave.(AO)
21 Let them give thanks(AP) to the Lord for his unfailing love(AQ)
    and his wonderful deeds(AR) for mankind.
22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings(AS)
    and tell of his works(AT) with songs of joy.(AU)

23 Some went out on the sea(AV) in ships;(AW)
    they were merchants on the mighty waters.
24 They saw the works of the Lord,(AX)
    his wonderful deeds in the deep.
25 For he spoke(AY) and stirred up a tempest(AZ)
    that lifted high the waves.(BA)
26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
    in their peril(BB) their courage melted(BC) away.
27 They reeled(BD) and staggered like drunkards;
    they were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried(BE) out to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he brought them out of their distress.(BF)
29 He stilled the storm(BG) to a whisper;
    the waves(BH) of the sea[b] were hushed.(BI)
30 They were glad when it grew calm,
    and he guided them(BJ) to their desired haven.
31 Let them give thanks(BK) to the Lord for his unfailing love(BL)
    and his wonderful deeds(BM) for mankind.
32 Let them exalt(BN) him in the assembly(BO) of the people
    and praise him in the council of the elders.

33 He turned rivers into a desert,(BP)
    flowing springs(BQ) into thirsty ground,
34 and fruitful land into a salt waste,(BR)
    because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
35 He turned the desert into pools of water(BS)
    and the parched ground into flowing springs;(BT)
36 there he brought the hungry to live,
    and they founded a city where they could settle.
37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards(BU)
    that yielded a fruitful harvest;
38 he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased,(BV)
    and he did not let their herds diminish.(BW)

39 Then their numbers decreased,(BX) and they were humbled(BY)
    by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
40 he who pours contempt on nobles(BZ)
    made them wander in a trackless waste.(CA)
41 But he lifted the needy(CB) out of their affliction
    and increased their families like flocks.(CC)
42 The upright see and rejoice,(CD)
    but all the wicked shut their mouths.(CE)

43 Let the one who is wise(CF) heed these things
    and ponder the loving deeds(CG) of the Lord.

Psalm 108[c](CH)(CI)

A song. A psalm of David.

My heart, O God, is steadfast;(CJ)
    I will sing(CK) and make music with all my soul.
Awake, harp and lyre!(CL)
    I will awaken the dawn.
I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
    I will sing of you among the peoples.
For great is your love,(CM) higher than the heavens;
    your faithfulness(CN) reaches to the skies.(CO)
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;(CP)
    let your glory be over all the earth.(CQ)

Save us and help us with your right hand,(CR)
    that those you love may be delivered.
God has spoken(CS) from his sanctuary:(CT)
    “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem(CU)
    and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.(CV)
Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim is my helmet,
    Judah(CW) is my scepter.
Moab(CX) is my washbasin,
    on Edom(CY) I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia(CZ) I shout in triumph.”

10 Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Is it not you, God, you who have rejected us
    and no longer go out with our armies?(DA)
12 Give us aid against the enemy,
    for human help is worthless.(DB)
13 With God we will gain the victory,
    and he will trample down(DC) our enemies.

Psalm 109

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

My God, whom I praise,(DD)
    do not remain silent,(DE)
for people who are wicked and deceitful(DF)
    have opened their mouths against me;
    they have spoken against me with lying tongues.(DG)
With words of hatred(DH) they surround me;
    they attack me without cause.(DI)
In return for my friendship they accuse me,
    but I am a man of prayer.(DJ)
They repay me evil for good,(DK)
    and hatred for my friendship.

Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy;
    let an accuser(DL) stand at his right hand.
When he is tried, let him be found guilty,(DM)
    and may his prayers condemn(DN) him.
May his days be few;(DO)
    may another take his place(DP) of leadership.
May his children be fatherless
    and his wife a widow.(DQ)
10 May his children be wandering beggars;(DR)
    may they be driven[d] from their ruined homes.
11 May a creditor(DS) seize all he has;
    may strangers plunder(DT) the fruits of his labor.(DU)
12 May no one extend kindness to him
    or take pity(DV) on his fatherless children.
13 May his descendants be cut off,(DW)
    their names blotted out(DX) from the next generation.
14 May the iniquity of his fathers(DY) be remembered before the Lord;
    may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
15 May their sins always remain before(DZ) the Lord,
    that he may blot out their name(EA) from the earth.

16 For he never thought of doing a kindness,
    but hounded to death the poor
    and the needy(EB) and the brokenhearted.(EC)
17 He loved to pronounce a curse—
    may it come back on him.(ED)
He found no pleasure in blessing—
    may it be far from him.
18 He wore cursing(EE) as his garment;
    it entered into his body like water,(EF)
    into his bones like oil.
19 May it be like a cloak wrapped(EG) about him,
    like a belt tied forever around him.
20 May this be the Lord’s payment(EH) to my accusers,
    to those who speak evil(EI) of me.

21 But you, Sovereign Lord,
    help me for your name’s sake;(EJ)
    out of the goodness of your love,(EK) deliver me.(EL)
22 For I am poor and needy,
    and my heart is wounded within me.
23 I fade away like an evening shadow;(EM)
    I am shaken off like a locust.
24 My knees give(EN) way from fasting;(EO)
    my body is thin and gaunt.(EP)
25 I am an object of scorn(EQ) to my accusers;
    when they see me, they shake their heads.(ER)

26 Help me,(ES) Lord my God;
    save me according to your unfailing love.
27 Let them know(ET) that it is your hand,
    that you, Lord, have done it.
28 While they curse,(EU) may you bless;
    may those who attack me be put to shame,
    but may your servant rejoice.(EV)
29 May my accusers be clothed with disgrace
    and wrapped in shame(EW) as in a cloak.

30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord;
    in the great throng(EX) of worshipers I will praise him.
31 For he stands at the right hand(EY) of the needy,
    to save their lives from those who would condemn them.

Psalm 110

Of David. A psalm.

The Lord says(EZ) to my lord:[e]

“Sit at my right hand(FA)
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”(FB)

The Lord will extend your mighty scepter(FC) from Zion,(FD) saying,
    “Rule(FE) in the midst of your enemies!”
Your troops will be willing
    on your day of battle.
Arrayed in holy splendor,(FF)
    your young men will come to you
    like dew from the morning’s womb.[f](FG)

The Lord has sworn
    and will not change his mind:(FH)
“You are a priest forever,(FI)
    in the order of Melchizedek.(FJ)

The Lord is at your right hand[g];(FK)
    he will crush kings(FL) on the day of his wrath.(FM)
He will judge the nations,(FN) heaping up the dead(FO)
    and crushing the rulers(FP) of the whole earth.
He will drink from a brook along the way,[h]
    and so he will lift his head high.(FQ)

Psalm 111[i]

Praise the Lord.[j]

I will extol the Lord(FR) with all my heart(FS)
    in the council(FT) of the upright and in the assembly.(FU)

Great are the works(FV) of the Lord;
    they are pondered by all(FW) who delight in them.
Glorious and majestic are his deeds,
    and his righteousness endures(FX) forever.
He has caused his wonders to be remembered;
    the Lord is gracious and compassionate.(FY)
He provides food(FZ) for those who fear him;(GA)
    he remembers his covenant(GB) forever.

He has shown his people the power of his works,(GC)
    giving them the lands of other nations.(GD)
The works of his hands(GE) are faithful and just;
    all his precepts are trustworthy.(GF)
They are established for ever(GG) and ever,
    enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.
He provided redemption(GH) for his people;
    he ordained his covenant forever—
    holy and awesome(GI) is his name.

10 The fear of the Lord(GJ) is the beginning of wisdom;(GK)
    all who follow his precepts have good understanding.(GL)
    To him belongs eternal praise.(GM)

Psalm 112[k]

Praise the Lord.[l](GN)

Blessed are those(GO) who fear the Lord,(GP)
    who find great delight(GQ) in his commands.
