Psalm 74-76
New American Standard Bible
An Appeal against the Devastation of the Land by the Enemy.
A [a]Maskil of Asaph.
74 God, why have You (A)rejected us forever?
Why does Your anger (B)smoke against the (C)sheep of Your [b]pasture?
2 Remember Your congregation, which You (D)purchased of old,
Which You have (E)redeemed to be the (F)tribe of Your inheritance;
And this Mount (G)Zion, where You have dwelt.
3 [c]Step toward the [d](H)irreparable ruins;
The enemy (I)has damaged everything in the sanctuary.
4 Your adversaries have (J)roared in the midst of Your meeting place;
They have set up their (K)own signs as (L)signs.
5 It [e]seems like one bringing up
His (M)axe into a [f]forest of trees.
6 And now they break down [g]all its (N)carved work
With axe and hammers.
7 They have [h](O)burned Your sanctuary [i]to the ground;
They have (P)defiled the dwelling place of Your name.
8 They (Q)said in their heart, “Let’s [j]completely [k]subdue them.”
They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
9 We do not see our (R)signs;
There is (S)no longer any prophet,
Nor is there anyone among us who knows (T)how long.
10 How long, God, will the enemy (U)taunt You?
Shall the enemy (V)treat Your name disrespectfully forever?
11 Why (W)do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand?
Extend it from Your chest and (X)destroy them!
12 Yet God is (Y)my King from long ago,
Who performs acts of salvation in the midst of the earth.
13 [l]You (Z)divided the sea by Your strength;
[m]You (AA)broke the heads of the (AB)sea monsters [n]in the waters.
14 [o]You crushed the heads of [p](AC)Leviathan;
You gave him as food for the [q]creatures (AD)of the wilderness.
15 [r]You (AE)broke open springs and torrents;
[s]You (AF)dried up ever-flowing streams.
16 Yours is the day, Yours also is the night;
[t]You have (AG)prepared the [u]light and the sun.
17 [v]You have (AH)established all the boundaries of the earth;
[w]You have [x]created (AI)summer and winter.
18 Remember this, [y]Lord, that the enemy has (AJ)taunted You,
And a (AK)foolish people has treated Your name disrespectfully.
19 Do not give the soul of Your (AL)turtledove to the wild animal;
(AM)Do not forget the life of Your afflicted forever.
20 Consider the (AN)covenant;
For the (AO)dark places of the land are full of the places of violence.
21 May the (AP)oppressed person not return dishonored;
May the (AQ)afflicted and the needy praise Your name.
22 Arise, God, and (AR)plead Your own cause;
Remember [z]how the (AS)foolish person taunts You all day long.
23 Do not forget the voice of Your (AT)adversaries,
The (AU)uproar of those who rise against You, which ascends continually.
God Humbles the Proud, but Exalts the Righteous.
For the music director; set to [aa]Al-tashheth. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.
75 We (AV)give thanks to You, God, we give thanks,
For Your name is (AW)near;
People declare (AX)Your wondrous works.
2 “When I select an (AY)appointed time,
It is I who (AZ)judge fairly.
3 The (BA)earth and all who inhabit it [ab]are unsteady;
It is I who have firmly set its (BB)pillars. Selah
4 I said to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
And to the wicked, ‘(BC)Do not lift up the horn;
5 Do not lift up your horn on high,
(BD)Do not speak with insolent [ac]pride.’”
6 For not from the east, nor from the west,
Nor from the [ad](BE)desert comes exaltation;
7 But (BF)God is the Judge;
He (BG)puts down one and exalts another.
8 For a (BH)cup is in the hand of the Lord, and the wine foams;
It is [ae](BI)well mixed, and He pours out of this;
Certainly all the wicked of the earth must drain and (BJ)drink its dregs.
9 But as for me, I will (BK)declare it forever;
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 And [af]He will cut off all the (BL)horns of the wicked,
But (BM)the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.
The Victorious Power of the God of Jacob.
For the music director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.
76 God is (BN)known in Judah;
His name is (BO)great in Israel.
2 His [ag](BP)tabernacle is in (BQ)Salem;
His (BR)dwelling place also is in Zion.
3 There He (BS)broke the [ah]flaming arrows,
The shield, the sword, and the [ai]weapons of war. Selah
4 You are resplendent,
[aj]More majestic than the mountains of prey.
5 The (BT)stouthearted were plundered,
[ak]They sank into sleep;
And none of the [al]warriors could use his hands.
6 At Your (BU)rebuke, God of Jacob,
Both [am](BV)rider and horse were cast into a dead sleep.
7 You, You indeed are (BW)to be feared,
And (BX)who may stand in Your presence, [an]once You are angry?
8 You caused judgment to be heard from heaven;
The earth (BY)feared and was still
9 When God (BZ)arose to judgment,
To save all the humble of the earth. Selah
10 For the [ao](CA)wrath of mankind shall praise You;
You will encircle Yourself with a remnant of wrath.
11 (CB)Make vows to the Lord your God and (CC)fulfill them;
All who are around Him are to (CD)bring gifts to Him who is to be feared.
12 He will cut off the spirit of princes;
He is [ap](CE)feared by the kings of the earth.

Psalm 74-76
New International Version
Psalm 74
A maskil[a] of Asaph.
1 O God, why have you rejected(A) us forever?(B)
Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?(C)
2 Remember the nation you purchased(D) long ago,(E)
the people of your inheritance,(F) whom you redeemed(G)—
Mount Zion,(H) where you dwelt.(I)
3 Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,(J)
all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.
4 Your foes roared(K) in the place where you met with us;
they set up their standards(L) as signs.
5 They behaved like men wielding axes
to cut through a thicket of trees.(M)
6 They smashed all the carved(N) paneling
with their axes and hatchets.
7 They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
they defiled(O) the dwelling place(P) of your Name.(Q)
8 They said in their hearts, “We will crush(R) them completely!”
They burned(S) every place where God was worshiped in the land.
9 We are given no signs from God;(T)
no prophets(U) are left,
and none of us knows how long this will be.
10 How long(V) will the enemy mock(W) you, God?
Will the foe revile(X) your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?(Y)
Take it from the folds of your garment(Z) and destroy them!
13 It was you who split open the sea(AC) by your power;
you broke the heads of the monster(AD) in the waters.
14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan(AE)
and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.(AF)
15 It was you who opened up springs(AG) and streams;
you dried up(AH) the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;
you established the sun and moon.(AI)
17 It was you who set all the boundaries(AJ) of the earth;
you made both summer and winter.(AK)
18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
how foolish people(AL) have reviled your name.
19 Do not hand over the life of your dove(AM) to wild beasts;
do not forget the lives of your afflicted(AN) people forever.
20 Have regard for your covenant,(AO)
because haunts of violence fill the dark places(AP) of the land.
21 Do not let the oppressed(AQ) retreat in disgrace;
may the poor and needy(AR) praise your name.
22 Rise up,(AS) O God, and defend your cause;
remember how fools(AT) mock you all day long.
23 Do not ignore the clamor(AU) of your adversaries,(AV)
the uproar(AW) of your enemies,(AX) which rises continually.
Psalm 75[b]
For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph. A song.
1 We praise you, God,
we praise you, for your Name is near;(AY)
people tell of your wonderful deeds.(AZ)
2 You say, “I choose the appointed time;(BA)
it is I who judge with equity.(BB)
3 When the earth and all its people quake,(BC)
it is I who hold its pillars(BD) firm.[c]
4 To the arrogant(BE) I say, ‘Boast no more,’(BF)
and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.[d](BG)
5 Do not lift your horns against heaven;
do not speak so defiantly.(BH)’”
6 No one from the east or the west
or from the desert can exalt themselves.
7 It is God who judges:(BI)
He brings one down, he exalts another.(BJ)
8 In the hand of the Lord is a cup
full of foaming wine mixed(BK) with spices;
he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
drink it down to its very dregs.(BL)
9 As for me, I will declare(BM) this forever;
I will sing(BN) praise to the God of Jacob,(BO)
10 who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”(BP)
Psalm 76[e]
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song.
1 God is renowned in Judah;
in Israel his name is great.(BQ)
2 His tent is in Salem,(BR)
his dwelling place in Zion.(BS)
3 There he broke the flashing arrows,(BT)
the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.[f](BU)
4 You are radiant with light,(BV)
more majestic than mountains rich with game.
5 The valiant(BW) lie plundered,
they sleep their last sleep;(BX)
not one of the warriors
can lift his hands.
6 At your rebuke,(BY) God of Jacob,
both horse and chariot(BZ) lie still.
7 It is you alone who are to be feared.(CA)
Who can stand(CB) before you when you are angry?(CC)
8 From heaven you pronounced judgment,
and the land feared(CD) and was quiet—
9 when you, God, rose up to judge,(CE)
to save all the afflicted(CF) of the land.
10 Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise,(CG)
and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.[g]

16 So then, it does not depend on the person who [a]wants it nor the one who [b](A)runs, but on (B)God who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “(C)For this very reason I raised you up, in order to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed [c]throughout the earth.” 18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He (D)hardens whom He desires.
19 (E)You will say to me then, “(F)Why does He still find fault? For (G)who has resisted His will?” 20 On the contrary, who are you, [d](H)you foolish person, who (I)answers back to God? (J)The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? 21 Or does the potter not have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one object [e]for honorable use, and another [f]for common use? 22 [g]What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with great (K)patience objects of wrath (L)prepared for destruction? 23 And He did so to make known (M)the riches of His glory upon (N)objects of mercy, which He (O)prepared beforehand for glory, 24 namely us, whom He also (P)called, (Q)not only from among Jews, but also from among Gentiles, 25 as He also says in Hosea:
“(R)I will call those who were not My people, ‘My people,’
And her who was not beloved, ‘beloved.’”
26 “(S)And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘you are not My people,’
There they shall be called sons of (T)the living God.”
27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, “(U)Though the number of the sons of Israel may be (V)like the sand of the sea, only (W)the remnant will be saved; 28 (X)for the Lord will execute His word on the earth, [h]thoroughly and [i]quickly.” 29 And just as Isaiah foretold:
“(Y)If (Z)the Lord [j]of armies had not left us [k](AA)descendants,
(AB)We would have become like Sodom, and would have [l]been like Gomorrah.”
30 (AC)What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, but (AD)the righteousness that is [m]by faith; 31 however, Israel, (AE)pursuing a law of righteousness, did not (AF)arrive at that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it [n]by faith, but as though they could [o]by works. They stumbled over (AG)the stumbling stone, 33 just as it is written:
“(AH)Behold, I am laying in Zion (AI)a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense,
(AJ)And the one who believes in Him (AK)will not be [p]put to shame.”

16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.(A) 17 For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”[a](B) 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.(C)
19 One of you will say to me:(D) “Then why does God still blame us?(E) For who is able to resist his will?”(F) 20 But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God?(G) “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it,(H) ‘Why did you make me like this?’”[b](I) 21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?(J)
22 What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience(K) the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction?(L) 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory(M) known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory(N)— 24 even us, whom he also called,(O) not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?(P) 25 As he says in Hosea:
“I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people;
and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one,”[c](Q)
26 and,
“In the very place where it was said to them,
‘You are not my people,’
there they will be called ‘children of the living God.’”[d](R)
27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:
“Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea,(S)
only the remnant will be saved.(T)
28 For the Lord will carry out
his sentence on earth with speed and finality.”[e](U)
29 It is just as Isaiah said previously:
“Unless the Lord Almighty(V)
had left us descendants,
we would have become like Sodom,
we would have been like Gomorrah.”[f](W)
Israel’s Unbelief
30 What then shall we say?(X) That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;(Y) 31 but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness,(Z) have not attained their goal.(AA) 32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.(AB) 33 As it is written:
