49  Ki te tino kaiwhakatangi. He himene ma nga tama a Koraha.

Ka whakapuakina he matauranga e toku mangai: a he ata ngarahu te whakaaro o toku ngakau.

Ko te hunga e whakawhirinaki ana ki o ratou taonga, e whakamanamana ana ki te nui o o ratou rawa;

E kore tetahi o ratou e ahei te hoko i tona teina, te hoatu ranei i tetahi utu mona ki te Atua;

He nui hoki te utu mo to ratou wairua, a me whakarere atu ake ake;

Kia ora tonu ai ia ake ake: kia kaua e kite i te pirau.

10 E kite ana hoki ia e matemate ana nga tangata whakaaro nui, e ngaro ngatahi ana te poauau me te whakaarokore, a mahue iho o ratou taonga ki etahi atu.

11 Ki to ratou whakaaro puku, tera e pumau tonu o ratou whare me o ratou nohoanga, ki nga whakatupuranga katoa: huaina iho o ratou whenua ki o ratou ingoa.

12 Heoi kahore te tangata e noho tonu i roto i te honore: ko tona rite kei nga kararehe ka moti nei.

13 Ko to ratou ara tenei, ara ko to ratou poauau: heoi e whakapai ana to ratou uri ki a ratou korero. (Hera.

14 Kei te hipi te rite: ko te wahi mo ratou ko te reinga; ko te mate hei hepara mo ratou, hei rangatira ano te hunga tika mo ratou i te ata; ko to ratou ataahua ma te reinga e whakamoti, kia kore ai he whare mona.

15 Ma te Atua ia toku wairua e hoko mai i te reinga: ko ia hoki hei tukunga atu moku. (Hera.

16 Kaua e wehi ua whai taonga te tangata, ina nui haere te kororia o tona whare;

17 Kahore hoki ana mea e mau atu ai ia ina mate; e kore tona kororia e tuku iho i muri i a ia.

18 Whakapai noa ia i tona wairua i a ia e ora ana; a ka whakamoemititia koe ua pai au mahi ki a koe ano.

50  He himene na Ahapa.

(Hera.

Whakarongo, e toku iwi, a ka korero ahau; e Iharaira, ka whakaatu ahau ki a koe; ko ahau te Atua, ko tou Atua.

E kore ahau e riri ki a koe mo au patunga tapu; a kei toku aroaro tonu au tahunga tinana.

E kore ahau e tango i tetahi puru i roto i tou whare, i etahi koati toa ranei i roto i au taiepa.

12 Me he matekai toku, e kore ahau e korero ki a koe: naku nei hoki te ao, me ona tini mea.

21 Ko au mahi enei, a wahangu tonu ahau; i mea koe he pena pu ahau me koe: otira ka riria koe e ahau, ka whakararangitia ano aua mea ki tou aroaro.

Psalm 49[a]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

Hear(A) this, all you peoples;(B)
    listen, all who live in this world,(C)
both low and high,(D)
    rich and poor alike:
My mouth will speak words of wisdom;(E)
    the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.(F)
I will turn my ear to a proverb;(G)
    with the harp(H) I will expound my riddle:(I)

Why should I fear(J) when evil days come,
    when wicked deceivers surround me—
those who trust in their wealth(K)
    and boast(L) of their great riches?(M)
No one can redeem the life of another
    or give to God a ransom for them—
the ransom(N) for a life is costly,
    no payment is ever enough—(O)
so that they should live on(P) forever
    and not see decay.(Q)
10 For all can see that the wise die,(R)
    that the foolish and the senseless(S) also perish,
    leaving their wealth(T) to others.(U)
11 Their tombs(V) will remain their houses[b] forever,
    their dwellings for endless generations,(W)
    though they had[c] named(X) lands after themselves.

12 People, despite their wealth, do not endure;(Y)
    they are like the beasts that perish.(Z)

13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,(AA)
    and of their followers, who approve their sayings.[d]
14 They are like sheep and are destined(AB) to die;(AC)
    death will be their shepherd
    (but the upright will prevail(AD) over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
    far from their princely mansions.
15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;(AE)
    he will surely take me to himself.(AF)
16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
    when the splendor of their houses increases;
17 for they will take nothing(AG) with them when they die,
    their splendor will not descend with them.(AH)
18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed—(AI)
    and people praise you when you prosper—
19 they will join those who have gone before them,(AJ)
    who will never again see the light(AK) of life.

20 People who have wealth but lack understanding(AL)
    are like the beasts that perish.(AM)

Psalm 50

A psalm of Asaph.

The Mighty One, God, the Lord,(AN)
    speaks and summons the earth
    from the rising of the sun to where it sets.(AO)
From Zion,(AP) perfect in beauty,(AQ)
    God shines forth.(AR)
Our God comes(AS)
    and will not be silent;(AT)
a fire devours(AU) before him,(AV)
    and around him a tempest(AW) rages.
He summons the heavens above,
    and the earth,(AX) that he may judge his people:(AY)
“Gather to me this consecrated people,(AZ)
    who made a covenant(BA) with me by sacrifice.”
And the heavens proclaim(BB) his righteousness,
    for he is a God of justice.[e][f](BC)

“Listen, my people, and I will speak;
    I will testify(BD) against you, Israel:
    I am God, your God.(BE)
I bring no charges(BF) against you concerning your sacrifices
    or concerning your burnt offerings,(BG) which are ever before me.
I have no need of a bull(BH) from your stall
    or of goats(BI) from your pens,(BJ)
10 for every animal of the forest(BK) is mine,
    and the cattle on a thousand hills.(BL)
11 I know every bird(BM) in the mountains,
    and the insects in the fields(BN) are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
    for the world(BO) is mine, and all that is in it.(BP)
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
    or drink the blood of goats?

14 “Sacrifice thank offerings(BQ) to God,
    fulfill your vows(BR) to the Most High,(BS)
15 and call(BT) on me in the day of trouble;(BU)
    I will deliver(BV) you, and you will honor(BW) me.”

16 But to the wicked person, God says:

“What right have you to recite my laws
    or take my covenant(BX) on your lips?(BY)
17 You hate(BZ) my instruction
    and cast my words behind(CA) you.
18 When you see a thief, you join(CB) with him;
    you throw in your lot with adulterers.(CC)
19 You use your mouth for evil
    and harness your tongue to deceit.(CD)
20 You sit and testify against your brother(CE)
    and slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things and I kept silent,(CF)
    you thought I was exactly[g] like you.
But I now arraign(CG) you
    and set my accusations(CH) before you.

22 “Consider this, you who forget God,(CI)
    or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:(CJ)
23 Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
    and to the blameless[h] I will show my salvation.(CK)

I korerotia ra e ia i mua, ara e ana poropiti i roto i nga karaipiture tapu,

Mo tana Tama, i whanau nei he uri no Rawiri, no te wahi ki te kikokiko;

I whakapuakina mai nei ko te Tama a te Atua i runga i te kaha, i runga i ta te wairua o te tapu, i te mea ka whakaarahia i te hunga mate; ara a Ihu Karaiti, to tatou Ariki,

Nana nei matou i whiwhi ai ki te aroha noa, ki te mahi apotoro, kia ngohengohe ai, kia whakapono ai nga iwi katoa, hei mea mo tona ingoa:

No ratou nei hoki koutou, he mea karanga hei hunga mo Ihu Karaiti:

11 Nui atu hoki toku hiahia kia kite i a koutou, kia whakawhiwhi ai ahau i a koutou ki tetahi mea homai, he mea wairua, kia whakaungia ai koutou;

12 Ara kia ora ngatahi o tatou ngakau, toku i to koutou whakapono, o koutou i toku.

18 E whakakitea iho ana hoki i te rangi to te Atua riri ki nga karakiakoretanga katoa, ki nga he o nga tangata e pehi ana i te pono i runga i te he;

20 E kitea nuitia ana hoki nga mea ona, kahore nei i kitea, no te hanganga iho ra o te ao, e mohiotia ana ki nga mea i hanga, ara tona kaha mau tonu, me tona atuatanga; kia kore ai he kupu whakahoki ma ratou:

21 I a ratou hoki e matau ana ki te Atua, kihai ratou i whakakororia i a ia hei Atua, kihai hoki i whakawhetai; heoi kua kuware o ratou whakaaro, a whakapouritia ana to ratou ngakau pohehe.

22 I a ratou e mea ana he mohio ratou, na ka wairangi,

Amine.

30 He hunga ngautuara, kino ki te Atua, he hunga whakahihi, whakakake, whakapehapeha, he kaitito i nga mea kino, e turi ana ki nga matua,

31 Kahore o ratou matauranga, he hunga kupu taka, kahore nei he aroha, kahore e tohu tangata:

32 Ahakoa e matau ana ano ratou ki ta te Atua tikanga, he tika te mate mo nga kaimahi i enei mea, heoi ka mahi tonu ratou i aua mea me te whakaae hoki ki te hunga e pera ana te mahi.

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle(A) and set apart(B) for the gospel of God(C) the gospel he promised beforehand(D) through his prophets(E) in the Holy Scriptures(F) regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life[a](G) was a descendant of David,(H) and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power[b](I) by his resurrection from the dead:(J) Jesus Christ our Lord.(K) Through him we received grace(L) and apostleship to call all the Gentiles(M) to the obedience that comes from[c] faith(N) for his name’s sake. And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.(O)

To all in Rome who are loved by God(P) and called to be his holy people:(Q)

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.(R)

Paul’s Longing to Visit Rome

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you,(S) because your faith is being reported all over the world.(T) God, whom I serve(U) in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness(V) how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times;(W) and I pray that now at last by God’s will(X) the way may be opened for me to come to you.(Y)

11 I long to see you(Z) so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift(AA) to make you strong— 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. 13 I do not want you to be unaware,(AB) brothers and sisters,[d](AC) that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now)(AD) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

14 I am obligated(AE) both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.(AF)

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel,(AG) because it is the power of God(AH) that brings salvation to everyone who believes:(AI) first to the Jew,(AJ) then to the Gentile.(AK) 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed(AL)—a righteousness that is by faith(AM) from first to last,[e] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”[f](AN)

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God(AO) is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.(AP) 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,(AQ) so that people are without excuse.(AR)

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.(AS) 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools(AT) 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images(AU) made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over(AV) in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.(AW) 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie,(AX) and worshiped and served created things(AY) rather than the Creator—who is forever praised.(AZ) Amen.(BA)

26 Because of this, God gave them over(BB) to shameful lusts.(BC) Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.(BD) 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.(BE)

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over(BF) to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,(BG) 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;(BH) 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love,(BI) no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death,(BJ) they not only continue to do these very things but also approve(BK) of those who practice them.
