When a man's ways please the Lord,

    his mouth does not sin in judgment.

The reward for humility and fear of the Lord

12 The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge,

    I shall be killed in the streets!”
14 The mouth of (MP)forbidden[ab] women is (MQ)a deep pit;
    (MR)he with whom the Lord is angry will fall into it.
15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child,
    but (MS)the rod of discipline drives it far from him.
16 Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth,
    or gives to the rich, (MT)will only come to poverty.

Words of the Wise

17 (MU)Incline your ear, and hear (MV)the words of the wise,
    (MW)and apply your heart to my knowledge,
18 for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you,
    if all of them are ready on your lips.
19 That your trust may be in the Lord,
    I have made them known to you today, even to you.
20 Have I not written for you (MX)thirty sayings
    of counsel and knowledge,
21 to (MY)make you know what is right and true,
    that you may give a true answer to those who sent you?

22 (MZ)Do not rob the poor, because he is poor,
    or (NA)crush the afflicted at (NB)the gate,
23 for (NC)the Lord will plead their cause
    and rob of life those who rob them.
24 Make no friendship with a man given to anger,
    nor go with a wrathful man,
25 lest you learn his ways
    and entangle yourself in a snare.

    who put up security for debts.
27 If you have nothing with which to pay,
    why should (NE)your bed be taken from under you?
28 Do not move the ancient (NF)landmark
    that your fathers have set.
29 Do you see a man skillful in his work?

23 When you sit down to eat with a ruler,
    observe carefully what[ac] is before you,
and put a knife to your throat
    if you are given to appetite.

    for they are deceptive food.
(NI)Do not toil to acquire wealth;

When your eyes light on it, it is gone,

    flying like an eagle toward heaven.

    “Eat and drink!” he says to you,

    for he will despise the good sense of your words.

    then goes off and boasts about the purchase.

15 Gold there is, and rubies in abundance,
    but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.

16 Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger;

Thirty Sayings of the Wise

Saying 1

17 Pay attention(KQ) and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise;(KR)
    apply your heart to what I teach,(KS)
18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart
    and have all of them ready on your lips.
19 So that your trust may be in the Lord,
    I teach you today, even you.
20 Have I not written thirty sayings for you,
    sayings of counsel and knowledge,
21 teaching you to be honest and to speak the truth,(KT)
    so that you bring back truthful reports
    to those you serve?

Saying 2

22 Do not exploit the poor(KU) because they are poor
    and do not crush the needy in court,(KV)
23 for the Lord will take up their case(KW)

24 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person,
    do not associate with one easily angered,
25 or you may learn their ways
