The Parable of the Ten Virgins
25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like(A) ten virgins who took their lamps(B) and went out to meet the bridegroom.(C) 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise.(D) 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.(E)
6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’(F)
9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet.(G) And the door was shut.
11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’
12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’(H)
13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.(I)
The Parable of the Bags of Gold(J)
14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey,(K) who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[a] each according to his ability.(L) Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.(M) 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’
21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(N) Come and share your master’s happiness!’
22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’
23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(O) Come and share your master’s happiness!’
24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’
26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.(P) 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’(Q)
The Sheep and the Goats
31 “When the Son of Man comes(R) in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.(S) 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate(T) the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.(U) 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom(V) prepared for you since the creation of the world.(W) 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,(X) 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me,(Y) I was sick and you looked after me,(Z) I was in prison and you came to visit me.’(AA)
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’(AB)
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me,(AC) you who are cursed, into the eternal fire(AD) prepared for the devil and his angels.(AE) 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’(AF)
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.(AG)”(AH)
The Plot Against Jesus(AI)
26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things,(AJ) he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, the Passover(AK) is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled(AL) in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,(AM) 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(AN) 5 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot(AO) among the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany(AP)(AQ)
6 While Jesus was in Bethany(AR) in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”
10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you,[b](AS) but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.(AT) 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(AU)
14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot(AV)—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.(AW) 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper(AX)(AY)(AZ)
17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(BA) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”(BB)
18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time(BC) is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”(BD)
22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”
23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.(BE) 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.(BF) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him,(BG) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”(BH)
Jesus answered, “You have said so.”
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(BI) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
27 Then he took a cup,(BJ) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[c] covenant,(BK) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.(BL) 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you(BM) in my Father’s kingdom.”
30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(BN)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(BO)
31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,(BP) for it is written:
32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(BR)
33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”
34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(BS)
35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,(BT) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.
Gethsemane(BU)
36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(BV) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(BW) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(BX)
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(BY) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(BZ)
40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(CA) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(CB) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(CC)
43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(CD) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(CE)
47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(CF) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(CG) and kissed him.
50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[e](CH)
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(CI) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(CJ)
52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(CK) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(CL) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(CM) that say it must happen in this way?”
55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(CN) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(CO) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(CP)
57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(CQ) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(CR) He entered and sat down with the guards(CS) to see the outcome.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(CT) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(CU) came forward.
Finally two(CV) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(CW)
62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(CX)
The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(CY) by the living God:(CZ) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(DA) the Son of God.”(DB)
64 “You have said so,”(DC) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(DD) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[f](DE)
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(DF) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”
“He is worthy of death,”(DG) they answered.
67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(DH) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(DI)
Peter Disowns Jesus(DJ)
69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.
70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”
73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”
74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”
Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(DK) And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Joseph Makes Himself Known
45 Then Joseph could no longer control himself(A) before all his attendants, and he cried out, “Have everyone leave my presence!”(B) So there was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers. 2 And he wept(C) so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh’s household heard about it.(D)
3 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still living?”(E) But his brothers were not able to answer him,(F) because they were terrified at his presence.(G)
4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.”(H) When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt!(I) 5 And now, do not be distressed(J) and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here,(K) because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.(L) 6 For two years now there has been famine(M) in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. 7 But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant(N) on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.[a](O)
8 “So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God.(P) He made me father(Q) to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.(R) 9 Now hurry(S) back to my father and say to him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don’t delay.(T) 10 You shall live in the region of Goshen(U) and be near me—you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have.(V) 11 I will provide for you there,(W) because five years of famine(X) are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute.’(Y)
12 “You can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin,(Z) that it is really I who am speaking to you.(AA) 13 Tell my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt(AB) and about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly.(AC)”
14 Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin(AD) embraced him,(AE) weeping. 15 And he kissed(AF) all his brothers and wept over them.(AG) Afterward his brothers talked with him.(AH)
16 When the news reached Pharaoh’s palace that Joseph’s brothers had come,(AI) Pharaoh and all his officials(AJ) were pleased.(AK) 17 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, ‘Do this: Load your animals(AL) and return to the land of Canaan,(AM) 18 and bring your father and your families back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt(AN) and you can enjoy the fat of the land.’(AO)
19 “You are also directed to tell them, ‘Do this: Take some carts(AP) from Egypt for your children and your wives, and get your father and come. 20 Never mind about your belongings,(AQ) because the best of all Egypt(AR) will be yours.’”
21 So the sons of Israel did this. Joseph gave them carts,(AS) as Pharaoh had commanded, and he also gave them provisions for their journey.(AT) 22 To each of them he gave new clothing,(AU) but to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels[b] of silver and five sets of clothes.(AV) 23 And this is what he sent to his father: ten donkeys(AW) loaded with the best things(AX) of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and other provisions for his journey.(AY) 24 Then he sent his brothers away, and as they were leaving he said to them, “Don’t quarrel on the way!”(AZ)
25 So they went up out of Egypt(BA) and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan.(BB) 26 They told him, “Joseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of all Egypt.”(BC) Jacob was stunned; he did not believe them.(BD) 27 But when they told him everything Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts(BE) Joseph had sent to carry him back, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. 28 And Israel said, “I’m convinced!(BF) My son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”(BG)
Jacob Goes to Egypt
46 So Israel(BH) set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba,(BI) he offered sacrifices(BJ) to the God of his father Isaac.(BK)
2 And God spoke to Israel(BL) in a vision at night(BM) and said, “Jacob! Jacob!”
“Here I am,”(BN) he replied.
3 “I am God, the God of your father,”(BO) he said. “Do not be afraid(BP) to go down to Egypt,(BQ) for I will make you into a great nation(BR) there.(BS) 4 I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.(BT) And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.(BU)”
5 Then Jacob left Beersheba,(BV) and Israel’s(BW) sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts(BX) that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. 6 So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt,(BY) taking with them their livestock and the possessions(BZ) they had acquired(CA) in Canaan. 7 Jacob brought with him to Egypt(CB) his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.(CC)
8 These are the names of the sons of Israel(CD) (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt:
Reuben the firstborn(CE) of Jacob.
9 The sons of Reuben:(CF)
Hanok, Pallu,(CG) Hezron and Karmi.(CH)
10 The sons of Simeon:(CI)
Jemuel,(CJ) Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar(CK) and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.
11 The sons of Levi:(CL)
Gershon,(CM) Kohath(CN) and Merari.(CO)
12 The sons of Judah:(CP)
Er,(CQ) Onan,(CR) Shelah, Perez(CS) and Zerah(CT) (but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan).(CU)
The sons of Perez:(CV)
Hezron and Hamul.(CW)
13 The sons of Issachar:(CX)
Tola, Puah,[c](CY) Jashub[d](CZ) and Shimron.
14 The sons of Zebulun:(DA)
Sered, Elon and Jahleel.
15 These were the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram,[e](DB) besides his daughter Dinah.(DC) These sons and daughters of his were thirty-three in all.
16 The sons of Gad:(DD)
Zephon,[f](DE) Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.
17 The sons of Asher:(DF)
Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah.
Their sister was Serah.
The sons of Beriah:
Heber and Malkiel.
18 These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah,(DG) whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah(DH)—sixteen in all.
19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel:(DI)
Joseph and Benjamin.(DJ) 20 In Egypt, Manasseh(DK) and Ephraim(DL) were born to Joseph(DM) by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.[g](DN)
21 The sons of Benjamin:(DO)
Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.(DP)
22 These were the sons of Rachel(DQ) who were born to Jacob—fourteen in all.
25 These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah,(DU) whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel(DV)—seven in all.
26 All those who went to Egypt with Jacob—those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons’ wives—numbered sixty-six persons.(DW) 27 With the two sons[h] who had been born to Joseph in Egypt,(DX) the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy[i] in all.(DY)
28 Now Jacob sent Judah(DZ) ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen.(EA) When they arrived in the region of Goshen, 29 Joseph had his chariot(EB) made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel.(EC) As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father[j] and wept(ED) for a long time.(EE)
30 Israel(EF) said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive.”(EG)
31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan,(EH) have come to me.(EI) 32 The men are shepherds;(EJ) they tend livestock,(EK) and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.’(EL) 33 When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’(EM) 34 you should answer, ‘Your servants(EN) have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’(EO) Then you will be allowed to settle(EP) in the region of Goshen,(EQ) for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.(ER)”
47 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan(ES) and are now in Goshen.”(ET) 2 He chose five of his brothers and presented them(EU) before Pharaoh.
3 Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”(EV)
“Your servants(EW) are shepherds,(EX)” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.” 4 They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while,(EY) because the famine is severe in Canaan(EZ) and your servants’ flocks have no pasture.(FA) So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”(FB)
5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, 6 and the land of Egypt is before you; settle(FC) your father and your brothers in the best part of the land.(FD) Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability,(FE) put them in charge of my own livestock.(FF)”
7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him(FG) before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed[k] Pharaoh,(FH) 8 Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”
9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty.(FI) My years have been few and difficult,(FJ) and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.(FK)” 10 Then Jacob blessed[l] Pharaoh(FL) and went out from his presence.
11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land,(FM) the district of Rameses,(FN) as Pharaoh directed. 12 Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.(FO)
Joseph and the Famine
13 There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.(FP) 14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying,(FQ) and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.(FR) 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone,(FS) all Egypt came to Joseph(FT) and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes?(FU) Our money is all gone.”
16 “Then bring your livestock,(FV)” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.(FW)” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses,(FX) their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys.(FY) And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.
18 When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone(FZ) and our livestock belongs to you,(GA) there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we perish before your eyes(GB)—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food,(GC) and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh.(GD) Give us seed so that we may live and not die,(GE) and that the land may not become desolate.”
20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe(GF) for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, 21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,[m](GG) from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests,(GH) because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment(GI) Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.
23 Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed(GJ) for you so you can plant the ground.(GK) 24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth(GL) of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”
25 “You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord;(GM) we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”(GN)
26 So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth(GO) of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.(GP)
27 Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen.(GQ) They acquired property there(GR) and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.(GS)
28 Jacob lived in Egypt(GT) seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.(GU) 29 When the time drew near for Israel(GV) to die,(GW) he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(GX) put your hand under my thigh(GY) and promise that you will show me kindness(GZ) and faithfulness.(HA) Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers,(HB) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”(HC)
“I will do as you say,” he said.
31 “Swear to me,”(HD) he said. Then Joseph swore to him,(HE) and Israel(HF) worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[n](HG)
Manasseh and Ephraim
48 Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim(HH) along with him. 2 When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel(HI) rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.
3 Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty[o](HJ) appeared to me at Luz(HK) in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me(HL) 4 and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers.(HM) I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land(HN) as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’(HO)
5 “Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt(HP) before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine,(HQ) just as Reuben(HR) and Simeon(HS) are mine. 6 Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers. 7 As I was returning from Paddan,[p](HT) to my sorrow(HU) Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).(HV)
8 When Israel(HW) saw the sons of Joseph,(HX) he asked, “Who are these?”
9 “They are the sons God has given me here,”(HY) Joseph said to his father.
Then Israel said, “Bring them to me so I may bless(HZ) them.”
10 Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see.(IA) So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them(IB) and embraced them.(IC)
11 Israel(ID) said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again,(IE) and now God has allowed me to see your children too.”(IF)
12 Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees(IG) and bowed down with his face to the ground.(IH) 13 And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand,(II) and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel(IJ) reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head,(IK) though he was the younger,(IL) and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.(IM)
15 Then he blessed(IN) Joseph and said,
“May the God before whom my fathers
Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully,(IO)
the God who has been my shepherd(IP)
all my life to this day,
16 the Angel(IQ) who has delivered me from all harm(IR)
—may he bless(IS) these boys.(IT)
May they be called by my name
and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac,(IU)
and may they increase greatly
on the earth.”(IV)
17 When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand(IW) on Ephraim’s head(IX) he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 Joseph said to him, “No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”(IY)
19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great.(IZ) Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he,(JA) and his descendants will become a group of nations.(JB)” 20 He blessed(JC) them that day(JD) and said,
“In your[q] name will Israel(JE) pronounce this blessing:(JF)
‘May God make you like Ephraim(JG) and Manasseh.(JH)’”
So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.
21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you[r](JI) and take you[s] back to the land of your[t] fathers.(JJ) 22 And to you I give one more ridge of land[u](JK) than to your brothers,(JL) the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword(JM) and my bow.”
Jacob Blesses His Sons(JN)
49 Then Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.(JO)
3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn,(JR)
my might, the first sign of my strength,(JS)
excelling in honor,(JT) excelling in power.
4 Turbulent as the waters,(JU) you will no longer excel,
for you went up onto your father’s bed,
onto my couch and defiled it.(JV)
5 “Simeon(JW) and Levi(JX) are brothers—
their swords[v] are weapons of violence.(JY)
6 Let me not enter their council,
let me not join their assembly,(JZ)
for they have killed men in their anger(KA)
and hamstrung(KB) oxen as they pleased.
7 Cursed be their anger, so fierce,
and their fury,(KC) so cruel!(KD)
I will scatter them in Jacob
and disperse them in Israel.(KE)
8 “Judah,[w](KF) your brothers will praise you;
your hand will be on the neck(KG) of your enemies;
your father’s sons will bow down to you.(KH)
9 You are a lion’s(KI) cub,(KJ) Judah;(KK)
you return from the prey,(KL) my son.
Like a lion he crouches and lies down,
like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?
10 The scepter will not depart from Judah,(KM)
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,[x]
until he to whom it belongs[y] shall come(KN)
and the obedience of the nations shall be his.(KO)
11 He will tether his donkey(KP) to a vine,
his colt to the choicest branch;(KQ)
he will wash his garments in wine,
his robes in the blood of grapes.(KR)
12 His eyes will be darker than wine,
his teeth whiter than milk.[z](KS)
