56 But all this has taken place, so that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.(A)

Jesus before the High Priest

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58 But Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards in order to see how this would end.(B) 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they might put him to death, 60 but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward(C) 61 and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’ ”(D) 62 The high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?” 63 But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I put you under oath before the living God, tell us if you are the Messiah,[a] the Son of God.”(E) 64 Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you,

From now on you will see the Son of Man
seated at the right hand of Power
and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(F)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy.(G) 66 What do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death.”(H) 67 Then they spat in his face and struck him, and some slapped him,(I) 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you Messiah![b] Who is it that struck you?”

Peter’s Denial of Jesus

69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A female servant came to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before all of them, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 When he went out to the porch, another female servant saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene.”[c] 72 Again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you are also one of them, for your accent betrays you.” 74 Then he began to curse, and he swore an oath, “I do not know the man!” At that moment the cock crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: “Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.(J)

Jesus Brought before Pilate

27 When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus in order to bring about his death. They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor.(K)

The Suicide of Judas

When Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus[d] was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders.(L) He said, “I have sinned by betraying innocent[e] blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”(M) Throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.(N) But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since they are blood money.” After conferring together, they used them to buy the potter’s field as a place to bury foreigners. For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.(O) Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah,[f] “And they took[g] the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one on whom a price had been set,[h] on whom some of the people of Israel had set a price,(P) 10 and they gave[i] them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”

56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(A) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(B)

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(C) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(D) He entered and sat down with the guards(E) to see the outcome.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(F) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(G) came forward.

Finally two(H) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(I)

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(J)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(K) by the living God:(L) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(M) the Son of God.”(N)

64 “You have said so,”(O) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(P) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[a](Q)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(R) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”(S) they answered.

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(T) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(U)

Peter Disowns Jesus(V)

69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(W) And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Judas Hangs Himself

27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.(X) So they bound him, led him away and handed him over(Y) to Pilate the governor.(Z)

When Judas, who had betrayed him,(AA) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(AB) to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(AC)

So Judas threw the money into the temple(AD) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(AE)

The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(AF) to this day. Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(AG) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[b](AH)
