Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:

(A)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

For if [a]Joshua had (B)given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

The Word Discovers Our Condition

11 (C)Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is (D)living and powerful, and (E)sharper than any (F)two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is (G)a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 (H)And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (I)naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

Our Compassionate High Priest

14 Seeing then that we have a great (J)High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, (K)let us hold fast our confession. 15 For (L)we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but (M)was in all points tempted as we are, (N)yet without sin. 16 (O)Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Qualifications for High Priesthood

For every high priest taken from among men (P)is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can [b]have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to (Q)weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for (R)himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as (S)Aaron was.

A Priest Forever

(T)So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:

(U)“You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.”

As He also says in another place:

(V)“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek”;

who, in the days of His flesh, when He had (W)offered up prayers and supplications, (X)with vehement cries and tears to Him (Y)who was able to save Him from death, and was heard (Z)because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned (AA)obedience by the things which He suffered. And (AB)having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,

since then, it remaineth for certain to enter into it, and those who did first hear good news entered not in because of unbelief --

again He doth limit a certain day, `To-day,' (in David saying, after so long a time,) as it hath been said, `To-day, if His voice ye may hear, ye may not harden your hearts,'

for if Joshua had given them rest, He would not concerning another day have spoken after these things;

there doth remain, then, a sabbatic rest to the people of God,

10 for he who did enter into his rest, he also rested from his works, as God from His own.

11 May we be diligent, then, to enter into that rest, that no one in the same example of the unbelief may fall,

12 for the reckoning of God is living, and working, and sharp above every two-edged sword, and piercing unto the dividing asunder both of soul and spirit, of joints also and marrow, and a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart;

13 and there is not a created thing not manifest before Him, but all things [are] naked and open to His eyes -- with whom is our reckoning.

14 Having, then, a great chief priest passed through the heavens -- Jesus the Son of God -- may we hold fast the profession,

15 for we have not a chief priest unable to sympathise with our infirmities, but [one] tempted in all things in like manner -- apart from sin;

16 we may come near, then, with freedom, to the throne of the grace, that we may receive kindness, and find grace -- for seasonable help.

For every chief priest -- out of men taken -- in behalf of men is set in things [pertaining] to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins,

able to be gentle to those ignorant and going astray, since himself also is compassed with infirmity;

and because of this infirmity he ought, as for the people, so also for himself to offer for sins;

and no one to himself doth take the honour, but he who is called by God, as also Aaron:

so also the Christ did not glorify himself to become chief priest, but He who spake unto him: `My Son thou art, I to-day have begotten thee;'

as also in another [place] He saith, `Thou [art] a priest -- to the age, according to the order of Melchisedek;'

who in the days of his flesh both prayers and supplications unto Him who was able to save him from death -- with strong crying and tears -- having offered up, and having been heard in respect to that which he feared,

through being a Son, did learn by the things which he suffered -- the obedience,

and having been made perfect, he did become to all those obeying him a cause of salvation age-during,

Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who previously had good news preached to them failed to enter because of (A)disobedience, He again sets a certain day, “Today,” saying [a]through David after so long a time just (B)as has been said before,

(C)Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

For (D)if [b]Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. Consequently, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also (E)rested from his works, as (F)God did from His. 11 Therefore let’s make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same (G)example of (H)disobedience. 12 For (I)the word of God is (J)living and (K)active, and sharper than any two-edged (L)sword, even penetrating as far as the division of (M)soul and (N)spirit, of both joints and marrow, and (O)able to [c]judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And (P)there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (Q)open and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom [d]we must answer.

14 Therefore, since we have a great (R)high priest who has (S)passed through the heavens, Jesus (T)the Son of God, let’s hold firmly to our (U)confession. 15 For we do not have (V)a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been (W)tempted in all things just as we are, yet (X)without sin. 16 Therefore let’s (Y)approach the throne of grace with (Z)confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.

The Perfect High Priest

For every high priest (AA)taken from among men is appointed on behalf of people in (AB)things pertaining to God, in order to (AC)offer both gifts and sacrifices (AD)for sins; [e](AE)he can deal gently with the (AF)ignorant and (AG)misguided, since he himself also is [f](AH)clothed in weakness; and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices (AI)for sins for himself, (AJ)as well as for the people. And (AK)no one takes the honor for himself, but receives it when he is called by God, just (AL)as Aaron also was.

So too Christ (AM)did not glorify Himself in becoming a (AN)high priest, but it was He who (AO)said to Him,

(AP)You are My Son,
Today I have fathered You”;

just as He also says in another passage,

(AQ)You are a priest forever
According to (AR)the order of Melchizedek.”

In the days of [g]His humanity, [h](AS)He offered up both prayers and pleas with (AT)loud crying and tears to the One (AU)able to save Him [i]from death, and He [j]was heard because of His (AV)devout behavior. Although He was (AW)a Son, He learned (AX)obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been (AY)perfected, He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him,
