2 I will ^(A)take my stand at my watchpost
    and station myself on the tower,
and ^(B)look out to see ^(C)what he will say to me,
    and what I will answer concerning my complaint.

^(D)“Write the vision;
    make it plain on tablets,
    so he may run who reads it.
³ For still ^(E)the vision awaits its appointed time;
    it hastens to the end—it will not lie.
If it seems slow, ^(F)wait for it;
    ^(G)it will surely come; it will not delay.

⁴ “Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him,
    but ^(H)the righteous shall live by his faith.^[a]

⁵ “Moreover, wine^[b] is ^(I)a traitor,
    an arrogant man who is never at rest.^[c]
His greed is as wide as Sheol;
    like death ^(J)he has never enough.
^(K)He gathers for himself all nations
    and collects as his own all peoples.”

^(M)“Woe to him ^(N)who heaps up what is not his own—
    for ^(O)how long?—
    and ^(P)loads himself with pledges!”
^7 (Q)Will not your debtors suddenly arise,
    and those awake who will make you tremble?
    Then you will be spoil for them.
^8 (R)Because you have plundered many nations,
    all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you,
^(S)for the blood of man and ^(T)violence to the earth,
    to cities and all who dwell in them.

^9 (U)“Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house,
    ^(V)to ^(W)set his nest on high,
    to be safe from the reach of harm!
¹⁰ You have devised shame for your house
    ^(X)by cutting off many peoples;
    you have forfeited your life.
¹¹ For ^(Y)the stone will cry out from the wall,
    and the beam from the woodwork respond.

^12 (Z)“Woe to him ^(AA)who builds a town with blood
    and founds a city on iniquity!
¹³ Behold, is it not from the Lord of hosts
    that ^(AB)peoples labor merely for fire,
    and nations weary themselves for nothing?
^14 (AC)For the earth will be filled
    with the knowledge of ^(AD)the glory of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

^15 (AE)“Woe to him ^(AF)who makes his neighbors drink—
    you pour out your wrath and make them drunk,
    in order to gaze ^(AG)at their nakedness!
¹⁶ You will have your fill ^(AH)of shame instead of glory.
    ^(AI)Drink, yourself, and show your uncircumcision!
^(AJ)The cup in the Lord's right hand
    will come around to you,
    and ^(AK)utter shame will come upon your glory!
^17 (AL)The violence ^(AM)done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
    as will the destruction of the beasts that terrified them,
^(AN)for the blood of man and violence to the earth,
    to cities and all who dwell in them.

^18 (AO)“What profit is an idol
    when its maker has shaped it,
    a metal image, ^(AP)a teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
    when he makes ^(AQ)speechless idols!
^19 (AR)Woe to him ^(AS)who says to a wooden thing, Awake;
    to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
    and ^(AT)there is no breath at all in it.
²⁰ But ^(AU)the Lord is in his holy temple;
    ^(AV)let all the earth keep silence before him.”

² O Lord, ^(AW)I have heard the report of you,
    and ^(AX)your work, O Lord, do I fear.
In the midst of the years ^(AY)revive it;
    in the midst of the years make it known;
    ^(AZ)in wrath remember mercy.
³ God came from ^(BA)Teman,
    ^(BB)and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah
His splendor covered the heavens,
    and the earth was full of his praise.
^4 (BC)His brightness was like the light;
    rays flashed from his hand;
    and there he veiled his power.
^5 (BD)Before him went pestilence,
    and plague followed ^(BE)at his heels.^[d]
6 He stood ^(BF)and measured the earth;
    he looked and shook the nations;
then the ^(BG)eternal mountains ^(BH)were scattered;
    the everlasting hills sank low.
    His were ^(BI)the everlasting ways.
⁷ I saw the tents of ^(BJ)Cushan in affliction;
    ^(BK)the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.
^8 (BL)Was your wrath against the rivers, O Lord?
    Was your anger against the rivers,
    ^(BM)or your indignation against the sea,
^(BN)when you rode on your horses,
    ^(BO)on your chariot of salvation?
⁹ You stripped the sheath from your bow,
    calling for many arrows.^[e] Selah
    ^(BP)You split the earth with rivers.
^10 (BQ)The mountains saw you and writhed;
    the raging waters swept on;
^(BR)the deep gave forth its voice;
    ^(BS)it lifted its hands on high.
^11 (BT)The sun and moon stood still in their place
    ^(BU)at the light of your arrows as they sped,
    at the flash of your glittering spear.
^12 (BV)You marched through the earth in fury;
    ^(BW)you threshed the nations in anger.
^13 (BX)You went out for the salvation of your people,
    for the salvation of ^(BY)your anointed.
^(BZ)You crushed the head of the house of the wicked,
    laying him bare from thigh to neck.^[f] Selah
¹⁴ You pierced with his own arrows the heads of his warriors,
    who came like a whirlwind to scatter me,
    rejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret.
^15 (CA)You trampled the sea with your horses,
    the surging of mighty waters.

^16 (CB)I hear, and ^(CC)my body trembles;
    my lips quiver at the sound;
^(CD)rottenness enters into my bones;
    my legs tremble beneath me.
Yet ^(CE)I will quietly wait for the day of trouble
    to come upon people who invade us.

^(CK)To the choirmaster: with ^(CL)stringed^[g] instruments.

⁴ What ^(F)the cutting locust left,
    ^(G)the swarming locust has eaten.
What the swarming locust left,
    ^(H)the hopping locust has eaten,
and what the hopping locust left,
    ^(I)the destroying locust has eaten.

⁵ Awake, you drunkards, and weep,
    and ^(J)wail, all you drinkers of wine,
because of ^(K)the sweet wine,
    for it is cut off from your mouth.
⁶ For ^(L)a nation has come up against my land,
    ^(M)powerful and beyond number;
^(N)its teeth are lions' teeth,
    and it has the fangs of a lioness.
⁷ It has laid waste my vine
    and splintered my ^(O)fig tree;
it has stripped off their bark and thrown it down;
    their branches are made white.

⁸ Lament like a virgin^{[a] (P)}wearing sackcloth
    for the bridegroom of her youth.
^9 (Q)The grain offering and the drink offering are cut off
    from the house of the Lord.
^(R)The priests mourn,
    ^(S)the ministers of the Lord.
¹⁰ The fields are destroyed,
    ^(T)the ground mourns,
because ^(U)the grain is destroyed,
    ^(V)the wine dries up,
    the oil languishes.

^11 (W)Be ashamed,^[b] O tillers of the soil;
    wail, O vinedressers,
for the wheat and the barley,
    ^(X)because the harvest of the field has perished.
¹² The vine dries up;
    ^(Y)the fig tree languishes.
Pomegranate, palm, and apple,
    all the trees of the field are dried up,
and ^(Z)gladness dries up
    from the children of man.

^14 (AG)Consecrate a fast;
    ^(AH)call a solemn assembly.
Gather ^(AI)the elders
    and ^(AJ)all the inhabitants of the land
to the house of the Lord your God,
    and cry out to the Lord.

¹⁵ Alas for the day!
^(AK)For the day of the Lord is near,
    and as destruction from the Almighty^[c] it comes.
¹⁶ Is not the food cut off
    before our eyes,
^(AL)joy and gladness
    from the house of our God?

^17 (AM)The seed shrivels under the clods;^[d]
    the storehouses are desolate;
the granaries are torn down
    because ^(AN)the grain has dried up.
¹⁸ How ^(AO)the beasts groan!
    The herds of cattle are perplexed
because there is no pasture for them;
    even the flocks of sheep suffer.^[e]

¹⁹ To you, ^(AP)O Lord, I call.
^(AQ)For fire has devoured
    the pastures of the wilderness,
^(AR)and flame has burned
    all the trees of the field.
²⁰ Even the beasts of the field ^(AS)pant for you
    because the water brooks are dried up,
^(AT)and fire has devoured
    the pastures of the wilderness.

^3 (BC)Fire devours before them,
    and behind them a flame burns.
The land is like ^(BD)the garden of Eden before them,
    but ^(BE)behind them a desolate wilderness,
    and nothing escapes them.

^4 (BF)Their appearance is like the appearance of horses,
    and like war horses they run.
^5 (BG)As with the rumbling of chariots,
    they leap on the tops of the mountains,
like the crackling of ^(BH)a flame of fire
    devouring the stubble,
^(BI)like a powerful army
    drawn up for battle.

⁶ Before them peoples are in anguish;
    ^(BJ)all faces grow pale.
⁷ Like warriors they charge;
    like soldiers they scale the wall.
They march each on his way;
    they do not swerve from their paths.
⁸ They do not jostle one another;
    ^(BK)each marches in his path;
they burst through the weapons
    and are not halted.
^9 (BL)They leap upon the city,
    they run upon the walls,
^(BM)they climb up into the houses,
    ^(BN)they enter through the windows ^(BO)like a thief.

^10 (BP)The earth quakes before them;
    the heavens tremble.
^(BQ)The sun and the moon are darkened,
    and the stars withdraw their shining.
^11 (BR)The Lord utters his voice
    before ^(BS)his army,
for his camp is exceedingly great;
    ^(BT)he who executes his word is powerful.
^(BU)For the day of the Lord is ^(BV)great and very awesome;
    ^(BW)who can endure it?

^15 (CG)Blow the trumpet in Zion;
    ^(CH)consecrate a fast;
call a solemn assembly;
¹⁶     gather the people.
^(CI)Consecrate the congregation;
    assemble the elders;
^(CJ)gather the children,
    even nursing infants.
^(CK)Let the bridegroom leave his room,
    and the bride her chamber.

^17 (CL)Between the ^(CM)vestibule and the ^(CN)altar
    ^(CO)let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep
and say, “Spare your people, O Lord,
    and make not your heritage a reproach,
    a byword among the nations.^[f]
(CP)Why should they say among the peoples,
    ‘Where is their God?’”

²⁰ “I will remove the northerner far from you,
    and drive him into a parched and desolate land,
his vanguard^[g] into ^(CU)the eastern sea,
    and his rear guard^[h] into ^(CV)the western sea;
^(CW)the stench and foul smell of him will rise,
    for he has done great things.

²¹ “Fear not, O land;
    be glad and rejoice,
    for ^(CX)the Lord has done great things!
²² Fear not, ^(CY)you beasts of the field,
    for ^(CZ)the pastures of the wilderness are green;
^(DA)the tree bears its fruit;
    the fig tree and ^(DB)vine give their full yield.

^23 (DC)“Be glad, O children of Zion,
    and ^(DD)rejoice in the Lord your God,
for he has given ^(DE)the early rain for your vindication;
    he has poured down for you abundant rain,
    ^(DF)the early and ^(DG)the latter rain, as before.

²⁴ “The threshing floors shall be full of grain;
    the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
²⁵ I will restore^[i] to you the years
    that ^(DH)the swarming locust has eaten,
^(DI)the hopper, ^(DJ)the destroyer, and ^(DK)the cutter,
    ^(DL)my great army, which I sent among you.

^26 (DM)“You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
    and praise the name of the Lord your God,
    who has dealt wondrously with you.
And my people ^(DN)shall never again be put to shame.
^27 (DO)You shall know that I am ^(DP)in the midst of Israel,
    and that ^(DQ)I am the Lord your God ^(DR)and there is none else.
And my people ^(DS)shall never again be put to shame.

⁹ Proclaim this among the nations:
^(ER)Consecrate for war;^[m]
    stir up the mighty men.
Let all the men of war draw near;
    let them come up.
^10 (ES)Beat your plowshares into swords,
    and ^(ET)your pruning hooks into spears;
    let the weak say, “I am a warrior.”

^11 (EU)Hasten and come,
    all you surrounding nations,
    and gather yourselves there.
^(EV)Bring down your warriors, O Lord.
¹² Let the nations stir themselves up
    and come up to ^(EW)the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
^(EX)for there I will sit to judge
    all the surrounding nations.

^13 (EY)Put in the sickle,
    ^(EZ)for the harvest is ripe.
^(FA)Go in, tread,
    ^(FB)for the winepress is full.
The vats overflow,
    for their evil is great.

¹⁴ Multitudes, multitudes,
    in the valley of decision!
For ^(FC)the day of the Lord is near
    in the valley of decision.
^15 (FD)The sun and the moon are darkened,
    and the stars withdraw their shining.

^16 (FE)The Lord roars from Zion,
    and ^(FF)utters his voice from Jerusalem,
    ^(FG)and the heavens and the earth quake.
But the Lord is ^(FH)a refuge to his people,
    a stronghold to the people of Israel.

¹⁸ “And in that day
^(FM)the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
    and the hills shall flow with milk,
and ^(FN)all the streambeds of Judah
    shall flow with water;
^(FO)and a fountain shall come forth from the house of the Lord
    and water the Valley of ^(FP)Shittim.

^19 (FQ)“Egypt shall become a desolation
    and ^(FR)Edom a desolate wilderness,
^(FS)for the violence done to the people of Judah,
    because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
^20 (FT)But Judah shall be inhabited forever,
    and Jerusalem to all generations.
^21 (FU)I will avenge their blood,
    blood I have not avenged,^{[n]
    (FV)}for the Lord dwells in Zion.”

^(U)“‘Execute justice ^(V)in the morning,
    and deliver from the hand of the oppressor
    him who has been robbed,
^(W)lest my wrath go forth like fire,
    and burn with none to quench it,
    because of your evil deeds.’”

^13 (X)“Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley,
    O rock of the plain,
declares the Lord;
you who say, ^(Y)‘Who shall come down against us,
    or who shall enter our habitations?’
^14 (Z)I will punish you according to ^(AA)the fruit of your deeds,
declares the Lord;
    ^(AB)I will kindle a fire in her forest,
    ^(AC)and it shall devour all that is around her.”

“‘You are like Gilead to me,
    like the summit of ^(J)Lebanon,
yet surely I will make you a desert,
    ^(K)an uninhabited city.^[a]
7 (L)I will prepare destroyers against you,
    each with his weapons,
^(M)and they shall cut down your choicest cedars
    and cast them into the fire.

^10 (P)Weep not for him who is dead,
    nor grieve for him,
^(Q)but weep bitterly for him who goes away,
    for he shall return no more
    to see his native land.

^13 (T)“Woe to him who builds his house by ^(U)unrighteousness,
    and his upper rooms by injustice,
^(V)who makes his neighbor serve him for nothing
    and does not give him his wages,
¹⁴ who says, ‘I will build myself a great house
    with spacious upper rooms,’
who cuts out windows for it,
    paneling it with cedar
    and ^(W)painting it with vermilion.
¹⁵ Do you think you are a king
    because you compete in cedar?
Did not your father eat and drink
    and ^(X)do justice and righteousness?
    ^(Y)Then it was well with him.
^16 (Z)He judged the cause of the poor and needy;
    ^(AA)then it was well.
Is not this ^(AB)to know me?
    declares the Lord.
¹⁷ But you have eyes and heart
    only for your dishonest gain,
^(AC)for shedding innocent blood,
    and for practicing oppression and violence.”

^(AD)“They shall not lament for him, saying,
    ^(AE)‘Ah, my brother!’ or ‘Ah, sister!’
They shall not lament for him, saying,
    ^(AF)‘Ah, lord!’ or ‘Ah, his majesty!’
¹⁹ With the burial of a donkey ^(AG)he shall be buried,
    dragged and dumped beyond the gates of Jerusalem.”

²⁰ “Go up to Lebanon, and cry out,
    and lift up your voice in Bashan;
cry out from ^(AH)Abarim,
    for all ^(AI)your lovers are destroyed.
²¹ I spoke to you in your prosperity,
    but you said, ‘I will not listen.’
^(AJ)This has been your way from ^(AK)your youth,
    that you have not obeyed my voice.
^22 (AL)The wind shall shepherd all your shepherds,
    and ^(AM)your lovers shall go into captivity;
^(AN)then you will be ashamed and confounded
    because of all your evil.
²³ O inhabitant of ^(AO)Lebanon,
    nested among the cedars,
how you will be pitied when pangs come upon you,
    ^(AP)pain as of a woman in labor!”

²⁸ Is this man ^(AW)Coniah a despised, broken pot,
    a ^(AX)vessel no one cares for?
Why are he and his children hurled and cast
    into a ^(AY)land that they do not know?
^29 (AZ)O land, land, land,
    hear the word of the Lord!
³⁰ Thus says the Lord:
“Write this man down as ^(BA)childless,
    a man who shall not succeed in his days,
^(BB)for none of his offspring shall succeed
    ^(BC)in sitting on the throne of David
    and ruling again in Judah.”

^(BR)My heart is broken within me;
    ^(BS)all my bones shake;
I am like a drunken man,
    like a man overcome by wine,
because of the Lord
    and because of his holy words.
^10 (BT)For the land is full of adulterers;
    ^(BU)because of the curse ^(BV)the land mourns,
    and ^(BW)the pastures of the wilderness are dried up.
^(BX)Their course is evil,
    and their might is not right.
^11 (BY)“Both prophet and priest are ungodly;
    even ^(BZ)in my house I have found their evil,
declares the Lord.
^12 (CA)Therefore their way shall be to them
    like slippery paths ^(CB)in the darkness,
    into which they shall be driven and fall,
for I will bring disaster upon them
    ^(CC)in the year of their punishment,
declares the Lord.
¹³ In the prophets of ^(CD)Samaria
    ^(CE)I saw an unsavory thing:
^(CF)they prophesied by Baal
    ^(CG)and led my people Israel astray.
¹⁴ But in the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen a horrible thing:
^(CH)they commit adultery and walk in lies;
    ^(CI)they strengthen the hands of evildoers,
    so that no one turns from his evil;
^(CJ)all of them have become like Sodom to me,
    ^(CK)and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.”
¹⁵ Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets:
^(CL)“Behold, I will feed them with bitter food
    ^(CM)and give them ^(CN)poisoned water to drink,
for from the prophets of Jerusalem
    ungodliness has gone out into all the land.”

¹⁸ For ^(CT)who among them has stood in the council of the Lord
    to see and to hear his word,
    or who has paid attention to his word and listened?
^19 (CU)Behold, the storm of the Lord!
    Wrath has gone forth,
^(CV)a whirling tempest;
    it will burst upon the head of the wicked.
^20 (CW)The anger of the Lord will not turn back
    until he has executed and ^(CX)accomplished
    the intents of his heart.
^(CY)In the latter days you will understand it clearly.

^21 (CZ)“I did not send the prophets,
    yet they ran;
I did not speak to them,
    yet they prophesied.
^22 (DA)But if they had stood in my council,
    then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,
^(DB)and they would have turned them from their evil way,
    and ^(DC)from the evil of their deeds.
