28 Here is another message given to me from the Lord:

2-3 “Son of dust, say to the prince of Tyre, ‘The Lord God says: You are so proud you think you are God, sitting on the throne of a god on your island home in the midst of the seas. But you are only a man and not a god, though you boast yourself to be like God. You are wiser than Daniel, for no secret is hidden from you. You have used your wisdom and understanding to get great wealth—gold and silver and many treasures. Yes, your wisdom has made you very rich and very proud.’”

Therefore the Lord God says: “Because you claim that you are as wise as God, an enemy army, the terror of the nations, shall suddenly draw their swords against your marvelous wisdom and defile your splendor! They will bring you to the pit of hell, and you shall die as those pierced with many wounds, there on your island in the heart of the seas. Then will you boast as a god? At least to these invaders you will be no god, but merely man! 10 You will die like an outcast at the hands of foreigners. For I have spoken it,” the Lord God says.

11 Then this further message came to me from the Lord:

12 “Son of dust, weep for the king of Tyre.[a] Tell him, ‘The Lord God says: You were the perfection of wisdom and beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; your clothing was bejeweled with every precious stone—ruby, topaz, diamond, chrysolite, onyx, jasper, sapphire, carbuncle, and emerald—all in beautiful settings of finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created. 14 I appointed you to be the anointed Guardian Angel. You had access to the holy mountain of God. You walked among the stones of fire.[b]

15 “‘You were perfect in all you did from the day you were created until that time when wrong was found in you. 16 Your great wealth filled you with internal turmoil, and you sinned. Therefore, I cast you out of the mountain of God like a common sinner. I destroyed you, O Guardian Angel, from the midst of the stones of fire.[c] 17 Your heart was filled with pride because of all your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. Therefore, I have cast you down to the ground and exposed you helpless before the curious gaze of kings. 18 You defiled your holiness with lust for gain;[d] therefore, I brought forth fire from your own actions and let it burn you to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all those watching you. 19 All who know you are appalled at your fate; you are an example of horror; you are destroyed forever.’”

20 Then another message came to me from the Lord:

21 “Son of dust, look toward the city of Sidon and prophesy against it. Say to it, 22 ‘The Lord God says: I am your enemy, O Sidon, and I will reveal my power over you. When I destroy you and show forth my holiness upon you, then all who see shall know I am the Lord. 23 I will send an epidemic of disease and an army to destroy; the wounded shall be slain in your streets by troops on every side. Then you will know I am the Lord. 24 No longer shall you and Israel’s other neighbor nations prick and tear at Israel like thorns and briars, though they formerly despised her and treated her with great contempt.

25 “‘The people of Israel will once more live in their own land, the land I gave their father Jacob. For I will gather them back again from distant lands where I have scattered them, and I will show the nations of the world my holiness among my people. 26 They will live safely in Israel and build their homes and plant their vineyards. When I punish all the bordering nations that treated them with such contempt, then they shall know I am the Lord their God.’”

Footnotes

  1. Ezekiel 28:12 weep for the king of Tyre. In this passage (vv. 11-19) some descriptive phrases apply to a human king of Tyre, and some seem to apply to Satan. Great care therefore must be taken to apply these verses with discernment.
  2. Ezekiel 28:14 You walked among the stones of fire. Probably a symbol of the Angels.
  3. Ezekiel 28:16 O Guardian Angel, from the midst of the stones of fire, or “and the guardian cherub drove you out from the midst of the stones of fire.”
  4. Ezekiel 28:18 with lust for gain, literally, “in the unrighteousness of your trade.” I brought forth fire from your own actions, literally, “I brought fire from the midst of you.”

Tyre Thinks It Is Like a God

28 The word of the Lord came to me. He said, “Son of man,[a] say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“‘You are very proud!
    And you say, “I am a god!
I sit on the seat of gods
    in the middle of the seas.”

“‘But you are a man and not God!
    You only think you are a god.
You think you are wiser than Daniel[b]
    and no secret is hidden from you.
Through your wisdom and understanding
    you have gotten riches for yourself.
And you put gold and silver
    in your treasuries.
Through your great wisdom and trade,
    you have made your riches grow.
And now you are proud
    because of those riches.

“‘So this is what the Lord God says:
Tyre, you thought you were like a god.
I will bring strangers to fight against you.
    They are most terrible among the nations!
They will pull out their swords
    and use them against the beautiful things your wisdom brought you.
    They will ruin your glory.
They will bring you down to the grave.
    You will be like a sailor who died at sea.
That person will kill you.
    Will you still say, “I am a god”?
No, he will have you in his power!
    You will see that you are a man, not God!
10 Strangers will treat you like a foreigner[c] and kill you,
    because I gave the command!’”
This is what the Lord God said.

11 The word of the Lord came to me. He said, 12 “Son of man, sing this sad song about the king of Tyre. Say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“‘You were the perfect man—
    so full of wisdom and perfectly handsome.
13 You were in Eden, the garden of God.
You had every precious stone—
    rubies, topaz, and diamonds,
    beryls, onyx, and jasper,
    sapphires, turquoise, and emeralds.
And each of these stones was set in gold.
    You were given this beauty on the day you were created.
    God made you strong.
14 You were one of the chosen Cherubs
    who spread your wings over my throne.
I put you on the holy mountain of God.
    You walked among the jewels that sparkled like fire.
15 You were good and honest when I created you,
    but then you became evil.
16 Your business brought you many riches.
    But they also put cruelty inside you, and you sinned.
So I treated you like something unclean
    and threw you off the mountain of God.
You were one of the chosen Cherubs
    who spread your wings over my throne.
But I forced you to leave the jewels
    that sparkled like fire.
17 Your beauty made you proud.
    Your glory ruined your wisdom.
So I threw you down to the ground,
    and now other kings stare at you.
18 You did many wrong things.
You were a very crooked merchant.
    In this way you made the holy places unclean.
So I brought fire from inside you.
    It burned you!
You burned to ashes on the ground.
    Now everyone can see your shame.

19 “‘All the people in other nations
    were shocked about what happened to you.
What happened to you will make people very afraid.
    You are finished!’”

The Message Against Sidon

20 The word of the Lord came to me. He said, 21 “Son of man, look toward Sidon and speak for me against that place. 22 Say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“‘I am against you, Sidon!
    Your people will learn to respect me.
I will punish Sidon.
    Then people will know that I am the Lord.
Then they will learn that I am holy,
    and they will treat me that way.
23 I will send disease and death to Sidon,
    and many people inside the city will die.
Soldiers outside the city will kill many people.
    Then people will know that I am the Lord!

The Nations Will Stop Laughing at Israel

24 “‘Then the surrounding nations that hate Israel will no longer be like stinging nettles[d] and painful thorns. And they will know that I am the Lord God.’”

25 This is what the Lord God said: “I scattered the people of Israel among other nations, but I will gather the family of Israel together again. Then the nations will know that I am holy, and they will treat me that way. At that time the people of Israel will live in their land—I gave that land to my servant Jacob. 26 They will live safely in the land. They will build houses and plant vineyards. I will punish the nations around them that hated them. Then the people of Israel will live in safety, and they will know that I am the Lord their God.”

Judgment on the King of Tyre

28 Yahweh spoke his word to me. He said, “Son of man, tell the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says:

In your arrogance you say,
    “I’m a god. I sit on Elohim’s throne in the sea.”
        But you’re only human and not a god,
            although you think you are a god.
You think that you are wiser than Daniel
    and that no secret can be hidden from you.
Because you are wise and understanding,
    you’ve made yourself rich.
        You saved gold and silver in your treasuries.
Because of your great skill in trading,
    you’ve made yourself very wealthy.
        You have become arrogant because of your wealth.

“‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says:

You think you are wise like Elohim.
That is why I am going to bring foreigners against you,
    the most ruthless foreigners among the nations.
    They will draw their swords against your fine wisdom
        and dishonor your greatness.
They will throw you into a pit,
    and you will die a violent death in the sea.
You will no longer say that you are a god
    when you face those who kill you.
    You will be a human, not a god, in the hands of those who kill you.
10 You will die at the hands of foreigners like a godless person.
    I have spoken,’” declares Adonay Yahweh.

11 Yahweh spoke his word to me. He said, 12 “Son of man, sing a funeral song for the ruler of Tyre. Tell him, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says:

You were the perfect example,
    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in Eden, Elohim’s garden.
    You were covered with every kind of precious stone:
    red quartz, topaz, crystal,
    beryl, onyx, gray quartz, sapphire,
    turquoise, and emerald.
    Your settings and your sockets
    were made of gold when you were created.
14 I appointed an angel[a] to guard you.
    You were on Elohim’s holy mountain.
        You walked among fiery stones.
15 Your behavior was perfect from the time you were created,
    until evil was found in you.
16 You traded far and wide. You learned to be violent, and you sinned.
    So I threw you down from Elohim’s mountain in disgrace.
        The guardian angel forced you out from the fiery stones.
17 You became too proud because of your beauty.
    You wasted your wisdom because of your greatness.
    So I threw you to the ground
        and left you in front of the kings
            so that they could see you.
18 You dishonored your own holy places
    because of your many sins and dishonest trade.
        So I set fire to you to burn you up.
        I turned you into ashes on the ground
            in the presence of all who saw you.
19 All the nations who knew you are horrified because of you.
    You have come to a terrible end,
        and you will never exist again.’”

Judgment on Sidon Means Hope for Israel

20 Yahweh spoke his word to me. He said, 21 “Son of man, turn to Sidon and prophesy against it. 22 Tell it, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says:

I’m against you, Sidon.
    I will show my greatness through you.
        Then people will know that I am Yahweh,
            because I will punish you and show you how holy I am.
23 I will send a plague against you
    and make blood flow in your streets.
        Your people will fall dead.
            People with swords will attack you from every side.
    Then they will know that I am Yahweh.
24 The nation of Israel will no longer be hurt
    by prickly thorns or sharp briars from everyone around them.
    Then they will know that I am Adonay Yahweh.

25 “‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: When I gather the people of Israel from the nations where they were scattered, I will show that I am holy as the nations watch. The people of Israel will live in their own land, the land I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 They will live there in safety. They will build homes and plant vineyards. They will live in safety when I punish all the surrounding people who treat them with scorn. Then they will know that I am Yahweh their Elohim.’”

Proclamation Against the King of Tyre

28 The word of the Lord came to me again, saying, “Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, ‘Thus says the Lord God:

“Because your heart is (A)lifted[a] up,
And (B)you say, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of gods,
(C)In the midst of the seas,’
(D)Yet you are a man, and not a god,
Though you set your heart as the heart of a god
(Behold, (E)you are wiser than Daniel!
There is no secret that can be hidden from you!
With your wisdom and your understanding
You have gained (F)riches for yourself,
And gathered gold and silver into your treasuries;
(G)By your great wisdom in trade you have increased your riches,
And your heart is lifted up because of your riches),”

‘Therefore thus says the Lord God:

“Because you have set your heart as the heart of a god,
Behold, therefore, I will bring (H)strangers against you,
(I)The most terrible of the nations;
And they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom,
And defile your splendor.
They shall throw you down into the (J)Pit,
And you shall die the death of the slain
In the midst of the seas.

“Will you still (K)say before him who slays you,
‘I am a god’?
But you shall be a man, and not a god,
In the hand of him who slays you.
10 You shall die the death of (L)the uncircumcised
By the hand of aliens;
For I have spoken,” says the Lord God.’ ”

Lamentation for the King of Tyre

11 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 “Son of man, (M)take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God:

(N)“You were the seal of perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in (O)Eden, the garden of God;
Every precious stone was your covering:
The sardius, topaz, and diamond,
Beryl, onyx, and jasper,
Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold.
The workmanship of (P)your timbrels and pipes
Was prepared for you on the day you were created.

14 “You were the anointed (Q)cherub who covers;
I established you;
You were on (R)the holy mountain of God;
You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.
15 You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created,
Till (S)iniquity was found in you.

16 “By the abundance of your trading
You became filled with violence within,
And you sinned;
Therefore I cast you as a profane thing
Out of the mountain of God;
And I destroyed you, (T)O covering cherub,
From the midst of the fiery stones.

17 “Your (U)heart was [b]lifted up because of your beauty;
You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor;
I cast you to the ground,
I laid you before kings,
That they might gaze at you.

18 “You defiled your sanctuaries
By the multitude of your iniquities,
By the iniquity of your trading;
Therefore I brought fire from your midst;
It devoured you,
And I turned you to ashes upon the earth
In the sight of all who saw you.
19 All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you;
(V)You have become a horror,
And shall be no (W)more forever.” ’ ”

Proclamation Against Sidon

20 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, (X)set your face (Y)toward Sidon, and prophesy against her, 22 and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God:

(Z)“Behold, I am against you, O Sidon;
I will be glorified in your midst;
And (AA)they shall know that I am the Lord,
When I execute judgments in her and am (AB)hallowed in her.
23 (AC)For I will send pestilence upon her,
And blood in her streets;
The wounded shall be judged in her midst
By the sword against her on every side;
Then they shall know that I am the Lord.

24 “And there shall no longer be a pricking brier or (AD)a painful thorn for the house of Israel from among all who are around them, who (AE)despise them. Then they shall know that I am the Lord God.”

Israel’s Future Blessing

25 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “When I have (AF)gathered the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and am (AG)hallowed in them in the sight of the Gentiles, then they will dwell in their own land which I gave to My servant Jacob. 26 And they will (AH)dwell [c]safely there, (AI)build houses, and (AJ)plant vineyards; yes, they will dwell securely, when I execute judgments on all those around them who despise them. Then they shall know that I am the Lord their God.” ’ ”

Judgment on the King of Tyre

28 The Lord God said:

Ezekiel, son of man, tell the king of Tyre[a] that I am saying:

You are so arrogant that you think you're a god and that the city of Tyre is your throne. You may claim to be a god, though you're nothing but a mere human. You think you're wiser than Daniel[b] and know everything.[c]

Your wisdom has certainly made you rich, because you have storehouses filled with gold and silver. You're a clever businessman and are extremely wealthy, but your wealth has led to arrogance!

You compared yourself to a god, so now I, the Lord God, will make you the victim of cruel enemies. They will destroy all the possessions you've worked so hard to get. Your enemies will brutally kill you, and the sea will be your only grave.

When you face your enemies, will you still claim to be a god? They will attack, and you will suffer like any other human. 10 Foreigners will kill you, and you will die the death of those who don't worship me. I, the Lord, have spoken.

A Funeral Song for the King of Tyre

11 The Lord said:

12 Ezekiel, son of man, sing a funeral song for the king of Tyre[d] and tell him I am saying:

At one time, you were perfect,[e] intelligent, and good-looking. 13 You lived in the garden of Eden and wore jewelry made of brightly colored gems and precious stones. They were all set in gold[f] and were ready for you on the day you were born. 14 I appointed a winged creature to guard your home[g] on my holy mountain, where you walked among gems that dazzled like fire.

15 You were truly good from the time of your birth, but later you started doing wicked things. 16 You traded with other nations and became more and more cruel and evil. So I forced you to leave my mountain, and the creature that had been your protector now chased you away from the jewels.

17 It was your good looks that made you arrogant, and you were so famous that you started acting like a fool. That's why I threw you to the ground and let other kings sneer at you. 18 You have cheated so many other merchants that your places of worship are corrupt. So I set your city on fire and burned it down. Now everyone sees only ashes where your city once stood, 19 and the people of other nations are shocked. Your punishment was horrible, and you are gone forever.

Judgment on Sidon and Peace for Israel

20 (A) The Lord said:

21 Ezekiel, son of man, condemn the city of Sidon[h] 22 and tell its people:

I, the Lord God, am your enemy! People will praise me when I punish you, and they will see that I am holy. 23 I will send deadly diseases to wipe you out, and I will send enemies to invade and surround you. Your people will be killed, and you will know that I am the Lord.

24 When that happens, the people of Israel will no longer have cruel neighbors that abuse them and make them feel as though they are in a field of thorns and briers. And the Israelites will know that I, the Lord God, have done these things.

A Blessing for Israel

25 The Lord God said:

Someday I will gather the people of Israel from the nations where they are now scattered, and every nation will see that I am holy. The Israelites will once again live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 They will be safe and will build houses and plant vineyards. They will no longer be in danger, because I will punish their hateful neighbors. Israel will know that I am the Lord their God.
