The Glory of the Lord Fills the Temple

43 Then he led me to (A)the gate, the gate facing east. And behold, (B)the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the east. And (C)the sound of his coming was like the sound of many waters, and (D)the earth shone with his glory. And (E)the vision I saw was just like the vision that I had seen (F)when he[a] came to destroy the city, and just like (G)the vision that I had seen (H)by the Chebar canal. And (I)I fell on my face. As (J)the glory of the Lord (K)entered the temple by the gate facing east, (L)the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into (M)the inner court; and behold, (N)the glory of the Lord filled the temple.

(O)While the man was standing beside me, (P)I heard one speaking to me out of the temple, and he said to me, (Q)“Son of man, this is (R)the place of my throne and (S)the place of the soles of my feet, (T)where I will dwell in the midst of the people of Israel forever. And the house of Israel shall no more (U)defile my holy name, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoring and by the dead bodies[b] of their kings at their high places,[c] by setting their threshold by my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with (V)only a wall between me and them. They have (W)defiled my holy name by their abominations that they have committed, so I have consumed them in my anger. Now let them put away their whoring and the dead bodies of their kings far from me, (X)and I will dwell in their midst forever.

10 “As for you, (Y)son of man, (Z)describe to the house of Israel the temple, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities; and they shall measure the plan. 11 And if they are ashamed of all that they have done, (AA)make known to them the design of the temple, its arrangement, (AB)its exits and its entrances, that is, its whole design; and make known to them as well all its statutes and its whole design and all its laws, and write it down (AC)in their sight, so that they may observe all its laws and all its statutes and carry them out. 12 This is the law of the temple: the whole territory on the top of (AD)the mountain (AE)all around shall be most holy. Behold, this is the law of the temple.

The Altar

13 “These are the measurements of (AF)the altar by cubits (the cubit being (AG)a cubit and a handbreadth):[d] its base shall be one cubit high[e] and one cubit broad, with a rim of one span[f] around its edge. And this shall be the height of the altar: 14 from the base on the ground to the lower ledge, two cubits, with a breadth of one cubit; and from the smaller ledge to the larger ledge, four cubits, with a breadth of one cubit; 15 and the altar hearth, four cubits; and from the altar hearth projecting upward, (AH)four horns. 16 The altar hearth shall be (AI)square, twelve cubits long by twelve broad. 17 The ledge also shall be square, fourteen cubits long by fourteen broad, with a rim around it half a cubit broad, and its base one cubit all around. (AJ)The steps of the altar shall face east.”

18 And he said to me, (AK)“Son of man, thus says the Lord God: These are the ordinances for the altar: On the day when it is erected for offering burnt offerings upon it and (AL)for throwing blood against it, 19 you shall give to (AM)the Levitical priests (AN)of the family of Zadok, who draw near to me to minister to me, declares the Lord God, (AO)a bull from the herd for a sin offering. 20 And (AP)you shall take some of its blood and put it on (AQ)the four horns of the altar and on the four corners of the ledge and upon (AR)the rim all around. (AS)Thus you shall purify the altar and make atonement for it. 21 You shall also take the bull of the sin offering, and (AT)it shall be burned in the appointed place belonging to the temple, outside the sacred area. 22 And on the second day you shall offer a male goat without blemish for a sin offering; and the altar shall be purified, as it was purified with the bull. 23 When you have finished (AU)purifying it, you shall offer a bull from the herd without blemish and (AV)a ram from the flock without blemish. 24 You shall present them before the Lord, and the priests (AW)shall sprinkle salt on them and offer them up as a burnt offering to the Lord. 25 (AX)For seven days you shall provide daily a male goat for a sin offering; also, a bull from the herd and a ram from the flock, without blemish, shall be provided. 26 Seven days shall they make atonement for the altar and cleanse it, and so consecrate it.[g] 27 And when they have completed these days, then (AY)from the eighth day onward the priests shall offer on the altar your burnt offerings and your (AZ)peace offerings, and (BA)I will accept you, declares the Lord God.”

The Gate for the Prince

44 Then he brought me (BB)back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, (BC)which faces east. And it was shut. And the Lord said to me, “This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it, for (BD)the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it. Therefore it shall remain shut. Only (BE)the prince may sit in it (BF)to eat bread before the Lord. He (BG)shall enter by way of the vestibule of the gate, and shall go out by the same way.”

Then he brought me by way of (BH)the north gate to the front of the temple, and I looked, and behold, (BI)the glory of the Lord filled the temple of the Lord. And (BJ)I fell on my face. And the Lord said to me, (BK)“Son of man, mark well, (BL)see with your eyes, (BM)and hear with your ears all that I shall tell you concerning (BN)all the statutes of the temple of the Lord and all its laws. And mark well (BO)the entrance to the temple and all the exits from the sanctuary. And say to (BP)the rebellious house,[h] to the (BQ)house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: O house of Israel, (BR)enough of all your abominations, in (BS)admitting foreigners, (BT)uncircumcised in heart and flesh, to be in my sanctuary, (BU)profaning my temple, when you offer to me my food, the fat and the blood. You[i] have broken my covenant, in addition to all your abominations. And (BV)you have not kept charge of my holy things, but you have set others to keep my charge for you in my sanctuary.

“Thus says the Lord God: (BW)No foreigner, uncircumcised in heart and flesh, of all the foreigners who are among the people of Israel, shall enter my sanctuary. 10 But (BX)the Levites who went far from me, going astray from me after their idols (BY)when Israel went astray, (BZ)shall bear their punishment.[j] 11 They shall be (CA)ministers in my sanctuary, having oversight (CB)at the gates of the temple and ministering in the temple. They shall slaughter the burnt offering and the sacrifice for the people, and (CC)they shall stand before the people, to minister to them. 12 Because they ministered to them before their idols and became (CD)a stumbling block of iniquity to the house of Israel, therefore I have (CE)sworn concerning them, declares the Lord God, and they shall bear their punishment. 13 They (CF)shall not come near to me, to serve me as priest, nor come near any of my holy things and the things that are most holy, but (CG)they shall bear their shame and the abominations that they have committed. 14 Yet I will appoint them to keep (CH)charge of the temple, (CI)to do all its service and all that is to be done in it.

Rules for Levitical Priests

15 “But (CJ)the Levitical priests, (CK)the sons of Zadok, who kept (CL)the charge of my sanctuary (CM)when the people of Israel went astray from me, shall come near to me (CN)to minister to me. And they shall stand before me to offer me (CO)the fat and the blood, declares the Lord God. 16 They shall enter my sanctuary, and they shall approach (CP)my table, to minister to me, and they shall keep my charge. 17 When they enter the gates of the inner court, they shall wear (CQ)linen garments. They shall have nothing of wool on them, while they minister at the gates of the inner court, and within. 18 They shall have linen turbans on their heads, and linen undergarments around their waists. They shall not bind themselves with anything that causes sweat. 19 And when they go out into the outer court to the people, they shall put off the garments in which they have been ministering (CR)and lay them in the holy chambers. And (CS)they shall put on other garments, (CT)lest they transmit holiness to the people with their garments. 20 (CU)They shall not shave their heads or (CV)let their locks grow long; they shall surely trim the hair of their heads. 21 (CW)No priest shall drink wine when he enters the inner court. 22 (CX)They shall not marry a widow or a divorced woman, but only virgins of the offspring of the house of Israel, or a widow who is the widow of a priest. 23 (CY)They shall teach my people the difference between the holy and the common, and (CZ)show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean. 24 (DA)In a dispute, they shall act as judges, and they shall judge it according to my judgments. They shall keep my laws and my statutes in all my appointed feasts, and (DB)they shall keep my Sabbaths holy. 25 (DC)They shall not defile themselves by going near to a dead person. However, for father or mother, for son or daughter, for brother or unmarried sister they may defile themselves. 26 (DD)After he[k] has become clean, they shall count seven days for him. 27 And on the day that he goes into the Holy Place, (DE)into the inner court, to minister in the Holy Place, (DF)he shall offer his sin offering, declares the Lord God.

28 (DG)“This shall be their inheritance: I am their inheritance: and (DH)you shall give them no possession in Israel; I am their possession. 29 (DI)They shall eat the grain offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering, and (DJ)every devoted thing in Israel shall be theirs. 30 (DK)And the first of all the firstfruits of all kinds, and every offering of all kinds from all your offerings, shall belong to the priests. (DL)You shall also give to the priests the first of your dough, (DM)that a blessing may rest on your house. 31 (DN)The priests shall not eat of (DO)anything, whether bird or beast, that has died of itself or is torn by wild animals.

The Holy District

45 “When (DP)you allot the land as an inheritance, (DQ)you shall set apart for the Lord a portion of the land as a holy district, 25,000 cubits[l] long and 20,000[m] cubits broad. It shall be holy throughout its whole extent. (DR)Of this a square plot of 500 by 500 cubits shall be for the sanctuary, with fifty cubits for (DS)an open space around it. And (DT)from this measured district you shall measure off a section 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 broad, (DU)in which shall be the sanctuary, (DV)the Most Holy Place. (DW)It shall be the holy portion of the land. It shall be for the priests, who minister in the sanctuary and approach the Lord to minister to him, and it shall be a place for their houses and a holy place for the sanctuary. (DX)Another section, 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits broad, shall be for the Levites who minister at the temple, as their possession for cities to live in.[n]

“Alongside the portion set apart as the holy district (DY)you shall assign for the property of the city an area 5,000 cubits broad and 25,000 cubits long. (DZ)It shall belong to the whole house of Israel.

The Portion for the Prince

(EA)“And to (EB)the prince shall belong the land on both sides of the holy district and the property of the city, alongside the holy district and the property of the city, on the west and on the east, corresponding in length to one of the tribal portions, and extending from the western to the eastern boundary of the land. It is to be his property in Israel. And (EC)my princes shall no more oppress my people, but (ED)they shall let the house of Israel have the land according to their tribes.

“Thus says the Lord God: (EE)Enough, O princes of Israel! Put away violence and oppression, and execute justice and righteousness. Cease (EF)your evictions of my people, declares the Lord God.

10 (EG)“You shall have just balances, a just ephah, and a just bath.[o] 11 The ephah and the bath shall be (EH)of the same measure, (EI)the bath containing one tenth of a homer,[p] and the ephah one tenth of a homer; the homer shall be the standard measure. 12 (EJ)The shekel shall be twenty gerahs;[q] twenty shekels plus twenty-five shekels plus fifteen shekels shall be your mina.[r]

13 (EK)“This is the offering that you shall make: one sixth of an ephah from each homer of wheat, and one sixth of an ephah from each homer of barley, 14 and as the fixed portion of oil, measured in baths, one tenth of a bath from each cor[s] (the cor, like the homer, contains (EL)ten baths).[t] 15 And one sheep from every flock of two hundred, from the watering places of Israel for grain offering, burnt offering, and peace offerings, (EM)to make atonement for them, declares the Lord God. 16 All the people of the land shall be obliged to give this offering to the prince in Israel. 17 (EN)It shall be the prince's duty to furnish the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings, at the feasts, the new moons, and the Sabbaths, all the appointed feasts of the house of Israel: he shall provide the sin offerings, grain offerings, burnt offerings, and peace offerings, to make atonement on behalf of the house of Israel.

18 “Thus says the Lord God: In the first month, (EO)on the first day of the month, you shall take a bull from the herd without blemish, and (EP)purify the sanctuary. 19 (EQ)The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering and put it (ER)on the doorposts of the temple, the four corners of the ledge of the altar, and the posts of the gate of the inner court. 20 You shall do the same on the seventh day of the month for anyone who has sinned through error or ignorance; so you shall make atonement for the temple.

21 (ES)“In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall celebrate the Feast of the Passover, and for seven days unleavened bread shall be eaten. 22 On that day the prince (ET)shall provide for himself and all the people of the land a young bull for a sin offering. 23 And on (EU)the seven days of the festival he shall provide as a burnt offering to the Lord seven young bulls and seven rams without blemish, on each of the seven days; and (EV)a male goat daily for a sin offering. 24 And (EW)he shall provide as (EX)a grain offering an ephah for each bull, an ephah for each ram, and a hin[u] of oil to each ephah. 25 (EY)In the seventh month, on the fifteenth day of the month and for the seven days of the feast, (EZ)he shall make the same provision for sin offerings, burnt offerings, and grain offerings, and for the oil.

God’s Glory Returns to the Temple

43 Then the man brought me to the gate facing east,(A) and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters,(B) and the land was radiant with his glory.(C) The vision I saw was like the vision I had seen when he[a] came to destroy the city and like the visions I had seen by the Kebar River, and I fell facedown. The glory(D) of the Lord entered the temple through the gate facing east.(E) Then the Spirit(F) lifted me up(G) and brought me into the inner court, and the glory(H) of the Lord filled the temple.(I)

While the man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from inside the temple. He said: “Son of man, this is the place of my throne(J) and the place for the soles of my feet. This is where I will live among the Israelites forever. The people of Israel will never again defile(K) my holy name—neither they nor their kings—by their prostitution and the funeral offerings[b] for their kings at their death.[c](L) When they placed their threshold next to my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with only a wall between me and them, they defiled my holy name by their detestable practices. So I destroyed them in my anger. Now let them put away from me their prostitution and the funeral offerings for their kings, and I will live among them forever.(M)

10 “Son of man, describe the temple to the people of Israel, that they may be ashamed(N) of their sins. Let them consider its perfection, 11 and if they are ashamed of all they have done, make known to them the design of the temple—its arrangement, its exits and entrances—its whole design and all its regulations[d] and laws. Write these down before them so that they may be faithful to its design and follow all its regulations.(O)

12 “This is the law of the temple: All the surrounding area(P) on top of the mountain will be most holy.(Q) Such is the law of the temple.

The Great Altar Restored

13 “These are the measurements of the altar(R) in long cubits,[e] that cubit being a cubit and a handbreadth: Its gutter is a cubit deep and a cubit wide, with a rim of one span[f] around the edge. And this is the height of the altar: 14 From the gutter on the ground up to the lower ledge that goes around the altar it is two cubits high, and the ledge is a cubit wide.[g] From this lower ledge to the upper ledge that goes around the altar it is four cubits high, and that ledge is also a cubit wide.[h] 15 Above that, the altar hearth(S) is four cubits high, and four horns(T) project upward from the hearth. 16 The altar hearth is square, twelve cubits[i] long and twelve cubits wide.(U) 17 The upper ledge(V) also is square, fourteen cubits[j] long and fourteen cubits wide. All around the altar is a gutter of one cubit with a rim of half a cubit.[k] The steps(W) of the altar face east.(X)

18 Then he said to me, “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: These will be the regulations for sacrificing burnt offerings(Y) and splashing blood(Z) against the altar when it is built: 19 You are to give a young bull(AA) as a sin offering[l] to the Levitical priests of the family of Zadok,(AB) who come near(AC) to minister before me, declares the Sovereign Lord. 20 You are to take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar(AD) and on the four corners of the upper ledge(AE) and all around the rim, and so purify the altar(AF) and make atonement for it. 21 You are to take the bull for the sin offering and burn it in the designated part of the temple area outside the sanctuary.(AG)

22 “On the second day you are to offer a male goat without defect for a sin offering, and the altar is to be purified as it was purified with the bull. 23 When you have finished purifying it, you are to offer a young bull and a ram from the flock, both without defect.(AH) 24 You are to offer them before the Lord, and the priests are to sprinkle salt(AI) on them and sacrifice them as a burnt offering to the Lord.

25 “For seven days(AJ) you are to provide a male goat daily for a sin offering; you are also to provide a young bull and a ram from the flock, both without defect.(AK) 26 For seven days they are to make atonement for the altar and cleanse it; thus they will dedicate it. 27 At the end of these days, from the eighth day(AL) on, the priests are to present your burnt offerings(AM) and fellowship offerings(AN) on the altar. Then I will accept you, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

The Priesthood Restored

44 Then the man brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, the one facing east,(AO) and it was shut. The Lord said to me, “This gate is to remain shut. It must not be opened; no one may enter through it.(AP) It is to remain shut because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it. The prince himself is the only one who may sit inside the gateway to eat in the presence(AQ) of the Lord. He is to enter by way of the portico of the gateway and go out the same way.(AR)

Then the man brought me by way of the north gate(AS) to the front of the temple. I looked and saw the glory of the Lord filling the temple(AT) of the Lord, and I fell facedown.(AU)

The Lord said to me, “Son of man, look carefully, listen closely and give attention to everything I tell you concerning all the regulations and instructions regarding the temple of the Lord. Give attention to the entrance(AV) to the temple and all the exits of the sanctuary.(AW) Say to rebellious Israel,(AX) ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Enough of your detestable practices, people of Israel! In addition to all your other detestable practices, you brought foreigners uncircumcised in heart(AY) and flesh into my sanctuary, desecrating my temple while you offered me food, fat and blood, and you broke my covenant.(AZ) Instead of carrying out your duty in regard to my holy things, you put others in charge of my sanctuary.(BA) This is what the Sovereign Lord says: No foreigner uncircumcised in heart and flesh is to enter my sanctuary, not even the foreigners who live among the Israelites.(BB)

10 “‘The Levites who went far from me when Israel went astray(BC) and who wandered from me after their idols must bear the consequences of their sin.(BD) 11 They may serve in my sanctuary, having charge of the gates of the temple and serving in it; they may slaughter the burnt offerings(BE) and sacrifices for the people and stand before the people and serve them.(BF) 12 But because they served them in the presence of their idols and made the people of Israel fall(BG) into sin, therefore I have sworn with uplifted hand(BH) that they must bear the consequences of their sin, declares the Sovereign Lord.(BI) 13 They are not to come near to serve me as priests or come near any of my holy things or my most holy offerings; they must bear the shame(BJ) of their detestable practices.(BK) 14 And I will appoint them to guard the temple for all the work that is to be done in it.(BL)

15 “‘But the Levitical priests, who are descendants of Zadok(BM) and who guarded my sanctuary when the Israelites went astray from me, are to come near to minister before me; they are to stand before me to offer sacrifices of fat(BN) and blood, declares the Sovereign Lord.(BO) 16 They alone are to enter my sanctuary; they alone are to come near my table(BP) to minister before me and serve me as guards.(BQ)

17 “‘When they enter the gates of the inner court, they are to wear linen clothes;(BR) they must not wear any woolen garment while ministering at the gates of the inner court or inside the temple. 18 They are to wear linen turbans(BS) on their heads and linen undergarments(BT) around their waists. They must not wear anything that makes them perspire.(BU) 19 When they go out into the outer court where the people are, they are to take off the clothes they have been ministering in and are to leave them in the sacred rooms, and put on other clothes, so that the people are not consecrated(BV) through contact with their garments.(BW)

20 “‘They must not shave(BX) their heads or let their hair grow long, but they are to keep the hair of their heads trimmed.(BY) 21 No priest is to drink wine when he enters the inner court.(BZ) 22 They must not marry widows or divorced women; they may marry only virgins of Israelite descent or widows of priests.(CA) 23 They are to teach my people the difference between the holy and the common(CB) and show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.(CC)

24 “‘In any dispute, the priests are to serve as judges(CD) and decide it according to my ordinances. They are to keep my laws and my decrees for all my appointed festivals,(CE) and they are to keep my Sabbaths holy.(CF)

25 “‘A priest must not defile himself by going near a dead person; however, if the dead person was his father or mother, son or daughter, brother or unmarried sister, then he may defile himself.(CG) 26 After he is cleansed, he must wait seven days.(CH) 27 On the day he goes into the inner court of the sanctuary(CI) to minister in the sanctuary, he is to offer a sin offering[m](CJ) for himself, declares the Sovereign Lord.

28 “‘I am to be the only inheritance(CK) the priests have. You are to give them no possession in Israel; I will be their possession. 29 They will eat(CL) the grain offerings, the sin offerings and the guilt offerings; and everything in Israel devoted[n] to the Lord(CM) will belong to them.(CN) 30 The best of all the firstfruits(CO) and of all your special gifts will belong to the priests. You are to give them the first portion of your ground meal(CP) so that a blessing(CQ) may rest on your household.(CR) 31 The priests must not eat anything, whether bird or animal, found dead(CS) or torn by wild animals.(CT)

Israel Fully Restored

45 “‘When you allot the land as an inheritance,(CU) you are to present to the Lord a portion of the land as a sacred district, 25,000 cubits[o] long and 20,000[p] cubits[q] wide; the entire area will be holy.(CV) Of this, a section 500 cubits[r] square(CW) is to be for the sanctuary, with 50 cubits[s] around it for open land. In the sacred district, measure off a section 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits[t] wide. In it will be the sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. It will be the sacred portion of the land for the priests,(CX) who minister in the sanctuary and who draw near to minister before the Lord. It will be a place for their houses as well as a holy place for the sanctuary.(CY) An area 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide will belong to the Levites, who serve in the temple, as their possession for towns to live in.[u](CZ)

“‘You are to give the city as its property an area 5,000 cubits[v] wide and 25,000 cubits long, adjoining the sacred portion; it will belong to all Israel.(DA)

“‘The prince will have the land bordering each side of the area formed by the sacred district and the property of the city. It will extend westward from the west side and eastward from the east side, running lengthwise from the western to the eastern border parallel to one of the tribal portions.(DB) This land will be his possession in Israel. And my princes will no longer oppress my people but will allow the people of Israel to possess the land according to their tribes.(DC)

“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have gone far enough, princes of Israel! Give up your violence and oppression(DD) and do what is just and right.(DE) Stop dispossessing my people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 10 You are to use accurate scales,(DF) an accurate ephah[w](DG) and an accurate bath.[x] 11 The ephah(DH) and the bath are to be the same size, the bath containing a tenth of a homer and the ephah a tenth of a homer; the homer is to be the standard measure for both. 12 The shekel[y] is to consist of twenty gerahs.(DI) Twenty shekels plus twenty-five shekels plus fifteen shekels equal one mina.[z]

13 “‘This is the special gift you are to offer: a sixth of an ephah[aa] from each homer of wheat and a sixth of an ephah[ab] from each homer of barley. 14 The prescribed portion of olive oil, measured by the bath, is a tenth of a bath[ac] from each cor (which consists of ten baths or one homer, for ten baths are equivalent to a homer). 15 Also one sheep is to be taken from every flock of two hundred from the well-watered pastures of Israel. These will be used for the grain offerings, burnt offerings(DJ) and fellowship offerings to make atonement(DK) for the people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16 All the people of the land will be required to give this special offering to the prince in Israel. 17 It will be the duty of the prince to provide the burnt offerings, grain offerings and drink offerings at the festivals, the New Moons(DL) and the Sabbaths(DM)—at all the appointed festivals of Israel.
