11 The Lord would speak to Moses face to face,(A) as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua(B) son of Nun did not leave the tent.

Moses and the Glory of the Lord

12 Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’(C) but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name(D) and you have found favor(E) with me.’ 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways(F) so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”(G)

14 The Lord replied, “My Presence(H) will go with you, and I will give you rest.”(I)

15 Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence(J) does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us?(K) What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”(L)

17 And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked,(M) because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”(N)

18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”(O)

19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass(P) in front of you, and I will proclaim my name,(Q) the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.(R) 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see(S) me and live.”

21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock(T) and cover you with my hand(U) until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”

11 So (A)the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but (B)his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle.

The Promise of God’s Presence

12 Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, (C)You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, (D)‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’ 13 Now therefore, I pray, (E)if I have found grace in Your sight, (F)show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is (G)Your people.”

14 And He said, (H)“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you (I)rest.”

15 Then he said to Him, (J)“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, (K)except You go with us? So we (L)shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.”

17 So the Lord said to Moses, (M)“I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.”

18 And he said, “Please, show me (N)Your glory.”

19 Then He said, “I will make all My (O)goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. (P)I will be gracious to whom I will be (Q)gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” 20 But He said, “You cannot see My face; for (R)no man shall see Me, and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you (S)in the cleft of the rock, and will (T)cover you with My hand while I pass by. 23 Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall (U)not be seen.”

11 Inside the Tent of Meeting, the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting.

Moses Sees the Lord’s Glory

12 One day Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Take these people up to the Promised Land.’ But you haven’t told me whom you will send with me. You have told me, ‘I know you by name, and I look favorably on you.’ 13 If it is true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor. And remember that this nation is your very own people.”

14 The Lord replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.”

15 Then Moses said, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. 16 How will anyone know that you look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.”

17 The Lord replied to Moses, “I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.”

18 Moses responded, “Then show me your glorious presence.”

19 The Lord replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh,[a] before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose. 20 But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live.” 21 The Lord continued, “Look, stand near me on this rock. 22 As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and let you see me from behind. But my face will not be seen.”
