Visions of the Four Beasts
7 In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream:[a] 2 I,[b] Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, 3 and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. 4 The first was like a lion and had eagles’ wings. Then, as I watched, its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a human being; and a human mind was given to it. 5 Another beast appeared, a second one, that looked like a bear. It was raised up on one side, had three tusks[c] in its mouth among its teeth and was told, “Arise, devour many bodies!” 6 After this, as I watched, another appeared, like a leopard. The beast had four wings of a bird on its back and four heads; and dominion was given to it. 7 After this I saw in the visions by night a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth and was devouring, breaking in pieces, and stamping what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that preceded it, and it had ten horns. 8 I was considering the horns, when another horn appeared, a little one coming up among them; to make room for it, three of the earlier horns were plucked up by the roots. There were eyes like human eyes in this horn, and a mouth speaking arrogantly.

Io guardai, finché non le furono strappate le ali; fu sollevata da terra, fu fatta stare in piedi come un uomo e le fu dato un cuore umano. 5 Poi vidi una seconda bestia, simile a un orso; essa stava eretta sopra un fianco, teneva tre costole in bocca fra i denti e le fu detto: “Àlzati, mangia molta carne!” 6 Dopo questo, io guardavo e vidi un’altra bestia, simile a un leopardo con quattro ali d’uccello sul dorso; aveva quattro teste e le fu dato il dominio. 7 Io continuavo a guardare le visioni notturne, ed ecco una quarta bestia spaventosa, terribile, straordinariamente forte. 7 Im ersten Jahr Belsazars, des Königs von Babel, hatte Daniel einen Traum und Gesichte seines Hauptes auf seinem Lager. Er schrieb den Traum sogleich auf, und dies ist der vollständige Bericht:
2 Daniel begann und sprach: Ich sah bei Nacht in meinem Gesicht, und siehe, die vier Winde des Himmels brachen los auf das große Meer;
3 und vier große Tiere stiegen aus dem Meer empor, jedes verschieden vom anderen:
4 Das erste glich einem Löwen und hatte Adlerflügel. Ich schaute, bis ihm die Flügel ausgerissen wurden und es von der Erde aufgerichtet und wie ein Mensch aufrecht auf seine Füße gestellt wurde und wie ihm ein menschliches Herz gegeben wurde.
5 Und siehe, das andere, zweite Tier glich einem Bären; und es war nur auf einer Seite aufgerichtet und hatte drei Rippen in seinem Maul zwischen seinen Zähnen; und es wurde zu ihm so gesprochen: Steh auf, friss viel Fleisch!
6 Danach schaute ich weiter und siehe, ein anderes [Tier] wie ein Panther; das hatte vier Vogelflügel auf seinem Rücken; auch vier Köpfe hatte dieses Tier, und ihm wurde Herrschaft verliehen.
7 Nach diesem sah ich in den Nachtgesichten und siehe, ein viertes Tier, furchterregend, schrecklich und außerordentlich stark; es hatte große eiserne Zähne, fraß und zermalmte und zertrat das Übrige mit den Füßen; es war ganz anders als alle vorherigen Tiere und hatte zehn Hörner.
8 Während ich achtgab auf die Hörner, siehe, da stieg ein anderes, kleines Horn zwischen denselben auf, und drei der vorherigen Hörner wurden vor ihm ausgerissen; und siehe, dieses Horn hatte Augen wie Menschenaugen und ein Maul, das große Dinge redete.

7 Au cours de la première année du règne de Balthazar, roi de Babylone[a], comme Daniel était couché sur son lit, il eut un rêve : des visions se présentèrent à son esprit. Il consigna le rêve par écrit. En voici le récit :
2 Au cours de mes visions nocturnes, je regardais et voici que les quatre vents du ciel agitaient la grande mer[b].
3 Quatre bêtes[c] énormes, différentes les unes des autres, surgirent de la mer. 4 La première ressemblait à un lion avec des ailes d’aigle. Tandis que je la regardais, ses ailes lui furent arrachées, elle fut soulevée de terre et dressée sur ses pieds comme un homme, un cœur humain lui fut donné.
5 Et voici que surgit une deuxième bête, ressemblant à un ours : elle était dressée sur un côté et tenait dans sa gueule trois côtes entre les dents. J’entendis qu’on lui disait : « Debout, mange beaucoup de chair ! » 6 Après cela, je continuai à regarder et je vis un autre animal qui ressemblait à un léopard, avec quatre ailes d’oiseaux sur le dos et quatre têtes. Le pouvoir lui fut donné.
7 Après cela, dans mes visions nocturnes, je vis surgir une quatrième bête, effrayante, terrifiante et d’une force extraordinaire ; elle avait d’énormes dents de fer, elle dévorait, déchiquetait et piétinait ce qui restait de ses victimes ; elle était bien différente de toutes les bêtes qui l’avaient précédée ; elle avait aussi dix cornes. 8 J’observais ces cornes et voilà qu’au milieu d’elles surgit une autre corne plus petite : trois des premières cornes furent arrachées devant elle. Sur cette corne, il y avait des yeux ressemblant à des yeux humains, et une bouche qui parlait avec arrogance.
