On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, with (A)Annas the high priest and (B)Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, (C)“By what power or (D)by what name did you do this?” Then Peter, (E)filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today (F)concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that (G)by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, (H)whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 (I)This Jesus[a] is the stone that was (J)rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.[b] 12 And there is (K)salvation (L)in no one else, for (M)there is no other (N)name under heaven given among men[c] by which we must be saved.”

13 (O)Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14 But seeing the man who was healed (P)standing beside them, (Q)they had nothing to say in opposition.

The next day the rulers,(A) the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas,(B) John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,(C) said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!(D) If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame(E) and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,(F) whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead,(G) that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is

The Word of Life

(A)That which was (B)from the beginning, (C)which we have heard, (D)which we have seen with our eyes, (E)which we looked upon and (F)have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— (G)the life (H)was made manifest, and we have seen it, and (I)testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, (J)which was with the Father and (K)was made manifest to us— (L)that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed (M)our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so (N)that our[a] joy may be complete.

Walking in the Light

(O)This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that (P)God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. (Q)If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and (R)do not practice the truth. But (S)if we walk in the light, (T)as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and (U)the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (V)If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and (W)the truth is not in us. (X)If we confess our sins, he is (Y)faithful and just to forgive us our sins and (Z)to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, (AA)we make him a liar, and (AB)his word is not in us.

Christ Our Advocate

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, (AC)we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (AD)He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but (AE)also for the sins of the whole world.

The Incarnation of the Word of Life

That which was from the beginning,(A) which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,(B) which we have looked at and our hands have touched(C)—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared;(D) we have seen it and testify to it,(E) and we proclaim to you the eternal life,(F) which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard,(G) so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.(H) We write this(I) to make our[a] joy complete.(J)

Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness

This is the message we have heard(K) from him and declare to you: God is light;(L) in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness,(M) we lie and do not live out the truth.(N) But if we walk in the light,(O) as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all[b] sin.(P)

If we claim to be without sin,(Q) we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.(R) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins(S) and purify us from all unrighteousness.(T) 10 If we claim we have not sinned,(U) we make him out to be a liar(V) and his word is not in us.(W)

My dear children,(X) I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate(Y) with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,(Z) and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.(AA)

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

36 As they were talking about these things, (A)Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were (B)startled and (C)frightened and (D)thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. (E)Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, (F)he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved (G)for joy and were marveling, (H)he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,[a] 43 and he took it and ate before them.

44 Then he said to them, (I)“These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, (J)that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then (K)he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus (L)it is written, (M)that the Christ should suffer and on the third day (N)rise from the dead, 47 and that (O)repentance for[b] the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed (P)in his name (Q)to all nations, (R)beginning from Jerusalem. 48 (S)You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending (T)the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you (U)are clothed with (V)power (W)from on high.”

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”(A)

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.(B) 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see;(C) a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.(D)

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:(E) Everything must be fulfilled(F) that is written about me in the Law of Moses,(G) the Prophets(H) and the Psalms.”(I)

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer(J) and rise from the dead on the third day,(K) 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name(L) to all nations,(M) beginning at Jerusalem.(N) 48 You are witnesses(O) of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised;(P) but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
