Then the word of Yahweh of hosts came to me, saying, “Speak to all the people of the land and to the priests, saying, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months [a]these (A)seventy years, was it actually for (B)Me that you fasted? And when you eat and when you drink, [b]are you not eating for yourselves and are you not drinking for yourselves? Are not these the words which Yahweh (C)called out by the hand of the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and (D)at ease along with its cities around it, and the [c](E)Negev and the [d]Shephelah were inhabited?’”

When you fasted and lamented during the fifth and seventh months for these seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted? And when you eat and drink, is it not for yourselves that you eat and drink? Weren’t these the words that the Lord proclaimed through the earlier prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and prosperous, with her cities around her, and when the Negev and the Shephelah[a] were inhabited?
