A Man on a Red Horse

On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of Yahweh came to Zechariah the prophet, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, saying, I saw at night, and behold, a man was riding on a (A)red horse, and he was standing among the (B)myrtle trees which were in the ravine, with red, sorrel, and (C)white horses behind him. Then I said, “My (D)lord, what are these?” And the (E)angel who was speaking with me said to me, “I will show you what these are.” 10 And the man who was standing among the myrtle trees answered and said, “These are those whom Yahweh has sent to [a](F)patrol the earth.” 11 So they answered the angel of Yahweh who was (G)standing among the myrtle trees and said, “We have [b]patrolled the earth, and behold, (H)all the earth is sitting still and quiet.”

12 Then the angel of Yahweh answered and said, “O Yahweh of hosts, (I)how long will You (J)have no compassion for Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You have been (K)indignant these (L)seventy years?” 13 Yahweh answered the (M)angel who was speaking with me with good words, (N)comforting words. 14 So the angel who was speaking with me said to me, “(O)Call out, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, “I am (P)exceedingly jealous for Jerusalem and Zion. 15 But I am very (Q)wrathful with the nations who are (R)at ease; for I was only a little wrathful, but they (S)helped increase the calamity.” 16 Therefore thus says Yahweh, “I will (T)return to Jerusalem with compassion; My (U)house will be built in it,” declares Yahweh of hosts, “and a measuring (V)line will be stretched over Jerusalem.”’ 17 Again, call out, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, “My (W)cities will again overflow with good, and Yahweh will again (X)comfort Zion and again (Y)choose Jerusalem.”’”

First Vision: The Horsemen

On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah son of Iddo: In the night I saw a man mounted on a red horse! He was standing among the myrtle trees in the shadows,[a] and behind him were red, sorrel, and white horses.(A) Then I said, “What are these, my lord?” The angel who spoke with me said to me, “I will show you what they are.”(B) 10 So the man who was standing among the myrtle trees answered, “They are those whom the Lord has sent to patrol the earth.”(C) 11 Then they spoke to the angel of the Lord who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have patrolled the earth, and the whole earth remains at peace.”(D) 12 Then the angel of the Lord said, “O Lord of hosts, how long will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which you have been angry these seventy years?”(E) 13 Then the Lord replied with gracious and comforting words to the angel who spoke with me.(F) 14 So the angel who spoke with me said to me, “Proclaim this message: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I am very zealous for Jerusalem and for Zion,(G) 15 and I am extremely angry with the nations that are at ease, for while I was only a little angry, they made the disaster worse.(H) 16 Therefore, thus says the Lord: I have returned to Jerusalem with compassion; my house shall be built in it, says the Lord of hosts, and a measuring line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem.(I) 17 Proclaim further: Thus says the Lord of hosts: My cities shall again overflow with prosperity; the Lord will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem.”(J)
