El candelero de oro y los dos olivos
4 En ese momento, el ángel que hablaba conmigo se acercó a mí para despertarme, 2 y me dijo:
—Zacarías, dime qué es lo que ves.
Yo le contesté:
—Veo un candelero de oro puro. En la parte de arriba, el candelero tiene siete lámparas; los tubos por donde pasa el aceite del candelero se conectan con la punta, la cual tiene la forma de un plato hondo. 3 A la izquierda y a la derecha del candelero hay dos olivos.
4 Pero también le pregunté:
—¿Y qué quiere decir todo esto, mi señor?
5 El ángel me contestó:
—¿No sabes lo que significa?
Yo le contesté que no lo sabía, 6 así que el ángel me explicó:
—Dios le está mandando un mensaje a Zorobabel, y es el siguiente:
“Zorobabel,
no hace falta que seas poderoso,
ni necesitas un gran ejército;
lo único que necesitas es mi espíritu.
Yo soy el Dios todopoderoso,
y te aseguro que así es.
7 ”No importa que tus enemigos
sean los poderosos babilonios,
tú los derrotarás por completo.
Y cuando pongas la piedra principal
para reconstruir mi templo,
mi pueblo gritará con alegría:
¡Dios ama mucho a Jerusalén!”
8 Dios también me dio este mensaje:
9-10 «Ustedes, pueblo de Israel,
verán a Zorobabel tomar la plomada.
Él pondrá los cimientos de mi templo,
y llevará a cabo su reconstrucción.
Su trabajo es ahora muy pequeño,
pero cuando lo haya terminado,
¡hasta los que no creían en él
se llenarán de alegría!
»Así sabrán que yo, su Dios,
fui quien envió a Zacarías
a anunciarles todo esto.
Las siete lámparas representan mis ojos,
pues yo vigilo toda la tierra».
11-12 Entonces yo le pregunté al ángel:
—¿Qué significan los olivos que están a los lados del candelero? ¿Y qué significan las dos ramas de olivo? ¿Por qué están junto a los dos tubos de oro por donde pasa el aceite?
13 El ángel me preguntó si no sabía yo lo que significaban, y como le dije que no, 14 él me explicó:
—Estos dos olivos representan a Zorobabel y a Josué. El Dios de toda la tierra los ha elegido para que estén a su servicio.

The Lampstand and the Two Olive Trees
4 Then the angel who was talking to me returned and woke me up. I was like a person waking up from sleep. 2 Then the angel asked me, “What do you see?”
I said, “I see a solid gold lampstand. There are seven lamps[a] on the lampstand, and there is a bowl on top of it. There are seven tubes coming from the bowl. One tube goes to each lamp. The tubes bring the oil in the bowl to each of the lamps. 3 There are two olive trees by the bowl, one on the right side and one on the left side. These trees produce the oil for the lamps.” 4 Then I asked the angel who was speaking with me, “Sir, what do these things mean?”
5 The angel speaking with me said, “Don’t you know what these things are?”
“No sir,” I said.
6 He said, “This is the message from the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Your help will not come from your own strength and power. No, your help will come from my Spirit.’ This is what the Lord All-Powerful says. 7 That tall mountain will be like a flat place for Zerubbabel. He will build the Temple, and when the most important stone is put in place, the people will shout, ‘Beautiful! Beautiful!’”
8 The Lord’s message to me also said, 9 “Zerubbabel will lay the foundations for my Temple, and he will finish building it. Then you will know that the Lord All-Powerful sent me to you people. 10 People will not be ashamed of the small beginnings, and they will be very happy when they see Zerubbabel with the plumb line,[b] measuring and checking the finished building. Now the seven sides[c] of the stone you saw represent the eyes of the Lord looking in every direction. They see everything on earth.”
11 Then I said to him, “I saw one olive tree on the right side of the lampstand and one on the left side. What do those two olive trees mean?” 12 I also said to him, “I saw two olive branches by the gold tubes with gold colored oil flowing from them. What do these things mean?”
13 Then the angel said to me, “Don’t you know what these things mean?”
I said, “No, sir.”
14 So he said, “They represent the two men chosen[d] to serve the Lord of the whole world.”

- Zechariah 4:2 lamps These lamps made light by burning olive oil.
- Zechariah 4:10 plumb line A string with a weight on one end used to show how straight the walls of a building were. Sometimes the line was coated with paint or chalk to mark a straight line.
- Zechariah 4:10 sides This is a wordplay. The Hebrew word also means “eyes.”
- Zechariah 4:14 men chosen Literally, “sons of extra pure olive oil.” Often a special oil was poured over new kings, priests, and prophets. This showed that these people were chosen by God.
