5 Come now, you who have osher (riches), weep, howling over your miseries coming upon you. [YESHAYAH 13:6; YECHEZKEL 30:2]

²The osher of you has rotted and your malbush has become moth-eaten. [IYOV 13:28; TEHILLIM 39:11; YESHAYAH 50:9]

³The gold of you and the silver has been corroded and the corrosion of them will be for a solemn eidus against you, and will eat the basar of you as Eish. You stored up otzar (treasure) in the Acharit Hayamim!

⁴Hinei, the wages of the po’alim (workers) who cut your fields, the wages you fraudulently withheld, those wages cry out, and the cries of the harvesting po’alim have reached the ears of Adonoi Tz’vaot. [VAYIKRA 19:13; YIRMEYAH 22:13; MALACHI 3:5; DEVARIM 24:15]

⁵You lived in indulgence upon ha’aretz and lolled in a life of luxury, you fattened your levavot as in a Yom Tivchah ("Day of Slaughter.” [YIRMEYAH 12:3; 25:34; YESHAYAH 53:7]

⁶You condemned, you killed the tzaddik, who does not resist you.

⁷Have zitzfleisch (patience), therefore, Achim b’Moshiach, until the Bias HaMoshiach, the Coming of Moshiach Adoneinu. Hinei, the ikar (farmer) awaits the precious p’ri haAdamah (fruit of the earth), having zitzfleisch (patience) for it until it receives the Yoreh (first autumn rain) and the Malkosh (spring rain). [Dt 11:14; Jer 5:24; Joel 2:23]

⁸You must also have zitzfleisch. Strengthen your levavot, because the Bias HaMoshiach, the Coming of Moshiach Adoneinu, has drawn near.

⁹Do not murmur, Achim b’Moshiach, against one another, lest you be judged. Hinei, haShofet is standing before the delet! [SHEMOT 15:24; 16:2; 17:3; BAMIDBAR 14:2,29; 16:41; TEHILLIM 94:2]

¹⁰Achim b’Moshiach, take as an example, of yissurim (suffering) and of zitzfleisch (patience) the Nevi’im who spoke b’Shem Adonoi.

¹¹Hinei, we call me’ashirim the ones having endured: the enduring orech ru’ach (patience) of Iyov you heard of, and the toitzaa (outcome) from Hashem you saw, that Eloheinu is full of rachamim and channun Hashem. [Job 1:21,22; 2:10; 42:10,12-17; Ex 34:6; Num 14:18; Ps 103:8]

¹²But, above all, my Achim b’Moshiach, do not swear shevuot (oaths) neither by Shomayim nor by ha’aretz nor any other shevu’ah, but let your "ken" be "ken," and your "lo" be "lo," for fear that you fall under HaDin (the Judgment).

¹³If anyone is suffering among you, let him daven. If anyone has simcha, let him sing niggunim. [Ps 50:15]

¹⁴Are there any cholim (sick ones) among you? Let the choleh (sick person) summon [for Bikkur Cholim (Visiting the Sick)] the Ziknei HaKehillah (Elders of the Congregation) and let them daven tefillos over him, having applied the shemen mishchah (anointing oil), b’Shem Adoneinu. [Ps 23:5; Isa 1:6]

¹⁵And the tefillah of emunah will deliver the choleh (sick person), and Hashem will raise him up. And if he may have been committing peysha’im, he will be given selicha (forgiveness).

¹⁶Therefore, make vidduy (confession of sin) to one another, and daven tefillos on behalf of one another, so that you may have refuah sheleimah (complete healing). The tefillah of a tzaddik is powerful and effective.

¹⁷Eliyahu [HaNavi] was a man of like nature to us, and with tefillah he davened for it not to rain, and it did not rain upon ha’aretz for shalosh shanim and shishah chodashim (three years and six months). [MELACHIM ALEF 17:1]

¹⁸And again Eliyahu [HaNavi] davened, and Shomayim gave GESHEM (rain) and ha’aretz caused its p’ri to sprout. [MELACHIM ALEF 18:45]

¹⁹My Achim b’Moshiach, if anyone among you wanders vait (astray) from HaEmes and someone turns a choteh (sinner) to become a ba’al teshuva

²⁰You should have da’as that the one having helped a choteh (sinner) to become a ba’al teshuva and to turn from the toyus (error) of his derech, and from setiyah HaDerech Hashem (turning aside or deviating from the Way of Hashem) will save the neshamah of him from mavet and will cover a multitude of chatta’im. [T.N. This may be the earliest writing in the Brit Chadasha. Of royal blood, Ya’akov Bar Yosef Ben Dovid, like Rav Sha’ul, was an unbeliever until he came to faith by the appearance of the Risen Moshiach (see I Cor 15:7). He died al kiddush ha-Shem 62 C.E. according to Josephus. His brother Yehuda wrote the letter on p.1118. See p848.]

5 ¡Oigan^[a] ahora^(A), ricos^(B)! Lloren y aúllen por las miserias que vienen sobre ustedes^(C). ²Sus riquezas se han podrido^(D) y sus ropas están comidas de polilla. ³Su oro y su plata se han oxidado, su herrumbre será un testigo contra ustedes y consumirá su carne como fuego. Es en^[b] los últimos días que han acumulado tesoros^(E). ⁴Miren, el jornal de los obreros que han segado sus campos^(F) y que ha sido retenido por ustedes, clama contra ustedes. El clamor de los segadores^(G) ha llegado a los oídos del Señor de los ejércitos^[c]^(H).

⁵Han vivido lujosamente sobre la tierra^(I), y han llevado una vida de placer desenfrenado. Han engordado^[d] sus corazones en el día de la matanza^(J). ⁶Han condenado y dado muerte^[e]^(K) al justo^(L). Él no les hace resistencia.

Exhortación a la paciencia

⁷Por tanto, hermanos^(M), sean pacientes hasta la venida del Señor^(N). Exhortaciones varias

¹²Y sobre todo, hermanos míos^(AE), no juren, ni por el cielo, ni por la tierra, ni con ningún otro juramento. Antes bien, sea el sí de ustedes^[j], sí, y su no^[k], no^(AF), para que no caigan bajo juicio.

¹³¿Sufre alguien entre ustedes^(AG)? Que haga oración^(AH). ¿Está alguien alegre? Que cante alabanzas^(AI). ¹⁴¿Está alguien entre ustedes enfermo? Que llame a los ancianos de la iglesia^(AJ) y que ellos oren por él, ungiéndolo^[l] con aceite en el nombre del Señor^(AK). ¹⁵La oración de fe^(AL) restaurará^[m] al enfermo^(AM), y el Señor lo levantará^(AN). ¹⁶Por tanto, confiésense sus pecados unos a otros^(AO), y oren unos por otros para que sean sanados^(AP). La oración^[o] eficaz^(AQ) del justo puede lograr mucho. ¹⁷Elías era un hombre de pasiones semejantes a las nuestras^[p]^(AR), y oró fervientemente^[q] para que no lloviera^(AS), y no llovió sobre la tierra por tres años y seis meses^(AT). ¹⁸Oró de nuevo^(AU), y el cielo dio lluvia^(AV) y la tierra produjo su fruto.

¹⁹Hermanos míos, si alguien de entre ustedes^(AW) se extravía de la verdad^(AX) y alguien le hace volver, ²⁰sepa^[r] que el que hace volver a un pecador del error de su camino salvará su alma de muerte^(AY), y cubrirá multitud de pecados^(AZ).

Rich Oppressors Will Be Judged

5 Come now, you ^(A)rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! ²Your ^(B)riches ^[a]are corrupted, and ^(C)your garments are moth-eaten. ³Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. ^(D)You have heaped up treasure in the last days. ⁴Indeed ^(E)the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and ^(F)the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of ^[b]Sabaoth. ⁵You have lived on the earth in pleasure and ^[c]luxury; you have ^[d]fattened your hearts ^[e]as in a day of slaughter. ⁶You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.

Be Patient and Persevering

⁷Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. ⁸You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord ^[f]is at hand.

⁹Do not ^[g]grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be ^[h]condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door! ¹⁰^(G)My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and ^(H)patience. ¹¹Indeed ^(I)we count them blessed who ^(J)endure. You have heard of ^(K)the perseverance of Job and seen ^(L)the end intended by the Lord—that ^(M)the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.

¹²But above all, my brethren, ^(N)do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “Yes” be “Yes,” and your “No,” “No,” lest you fall into ^[i]judgment.

Meeting Specific Needs^(O)

¹³Is anyone among you suffering? Let him ^(P)pray. Is anyone cheerful? ^(Q)Let him sing psalms. ¹⁴Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, ^(R)anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. ¹⁵And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. ^(S)And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. ¹⁶^[j]Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. ^(T)The effective, ^[k]fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. ¹⁷Elijah was a man ^(U)with a nature like ours, and ^(V)he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. ¹⁸And he prayed ^(W)again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

Bring Back the Erring One

¹⁹Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone ^(X)turns him back, ²⁰let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way ^(Y)will save ^[l]a soul from death and ^(Z)cover a multitude of sins.

Warning to Rich Oppressors

5 Now listen,^(A) you rich people,^(B) weep and wail^(C) because of the misery that is coming on you. ²Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes.^(D) ³Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.^(E) ⁴Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers^(F) who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries^(G) of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.^(H) ⁵You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves^(I) in the day of slaughter.^[a]^(J) ⁶You have condemned and murdered^(K) the innocent one,^(L) who was not opposing you.

Patience in Suffering

⁷Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming.^(M) See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting^(N) for the autumn and spring rains.^(O) ⁸You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming^(P) is near.^(Q) ⁹Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters,^(R) or you will be judged. The Judge^(S) is standing at the door!^(T)

¹⁰Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets^(U) who spoke in the name of the Lord. ¹¹As you know, we count as blessed^(V) those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance^(W) and have seen what the Lord finally brought about.^(X) The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.^(Y)

¹²Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.^(Z)

The Prayer of Faith

¹³Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray.^(AA) Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.^(AB) ¹⁴Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders^(AC) of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil^(AD) in the name of the Lord. ¹⁵And the prayer offered in faith^(AE) will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. ¹⁶Therefore confess your sins^(AF) to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.^(AG) The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.^(AH)

¹⁷Elijah was a human being, even as we are.^(AI) He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.^(AJ) ¹⁸Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.^(AK)
