Sam-sôn Cưới Vợ
14 Sam-sôn đi xuống Thim-na và thấy một thiếu nữ Phi-li-tin ở đó. 2 Khi trở về nhà, ông thưa với cha mẹ: “Con có thấy một thiếu nữ Phi-li-tin ở Thim-na, bây giờ xin cha mẹ cưới cô ấy làm vợ cho con.” 3 Cha mẹ ông đáp: “Trong vòng bà con chúng ta hay trong vòng dân tộc chúng ta không có một người nữ nào con có thể lấy làm vợ hay sao, mà con phải đi cưới một người nữ trong dân Phi-li-tin không cắt bì làm vợ?” Nhưng Sam-sôn nói với cha: “Xin cha cưới cô ấy cho con. Vì cô ấy hợp mắt con.” 4 Cha mẹ ông không biết rằng việc ấy đến từ CHÚA. Ngài tạo cơ hội để ông đối đầu với dân Phi-li-tin; vì lúc ấy người Phi-li-tin đang cai trị trên Y-sơ-ra-ên. 5 Sam-sôn với cha mẹ ông đi xuống Thim-na. Khi họ vừa đến khu các vườn nho ở Thim-na, thì kìa, một con sư tử tơ gầm lên và chạy tới vồ Sam-sôn. 6 Thần của CHÚA ngự xuống trên ông một cách mạnh mẽ nên ông dùng hai tay không xé con sư tử ra như thể xé một con dê con vậy. Nhưng ông không nói cho cha mẹ ông biết chuyện ông đã làm. 7 Rồi ông đi xuống, nói chuyện với cô thiếu nữ, và cô ấy hợp mắt Sam-sôn.
8 Cách ít lâu, Sam-sôn trở lại cưới cô gái. Ông đi rẽ qua xem thử xác con sư tử hôm trước đã ra sao. Và kìa, trong xác khô của nó có một tổ ong đầy mật. 9 Ông giơ tay lấy vỉ mật vừa đi vừa ăn. Ông cũng đem mời cha mẹ ông ăn nữa, và họ cùng ăn, nhưng ông không nói cho họ biết mật ấy đã lấy ra từ xác sư tử.
10 Bấy giờ cha của Sam-sôn xuống lo lễ cưới cô thiếu nữ đó cho Sam-sôn. Sam-sôn tổ chức một bữa tiệc để thết đãi theo như phong tục của các chàng rể thời ấy. 11 Khi thấy ông, họ giới thiệu cho ông ba mươi thanh niên để làm bạn. 12 Sam-sôn nói với họ: “Xin cho tôi đố anh em một câu đố, và nếu trong vòng bảy ngày của tiệc cưới, anh em trả lời được, thì tôi sẽ cho anh em ba mươi chiếc áo vải gai và ba mươi bộ y phục. 13 Còn nếu anh em không thể giải được câu đố thì anh em phải cho tôi ba mươi chiếc áo vải gai và ba mươi bộ y phục.”
Họ đáp: “Anh hãy ra câu đố đi. Chúng tôi nghe đây.”
14 Ông nói:
“Từ vật ăn lấy ra được món ăn,
Từ kẻ mạnh lấy ra được món ngọt.”
Ba ngày trôi qua mà họ vẫn chưa tìm ra được câu giải đáp. 15 Đến ngày thứ tư, họ đến nói với vợ Sam-sôn: “Cô phải dụ chồng cô giải đáp câu đố cho chúng tôi, nếu không chúng tôi sẽ đốt nhà cô, thiêu sống cô và cả nhà cha cô trong đó. Bộ các người tính mời chúng tôi đến đây để bóc lột chúng tôi hả?” 16 Thế là vợ Sam-sôn đến khóc lóc với ông: “Anh ghét em, chứ anh có thương em gì đâu. Anh ra một câu đố cho dân tộc em mà anh không cho em biết câu giải đáp.” Ông đáp: “Ngay cả cha mẹ anh mà anh còn không cho biết, thì tại sao anh phải nói cho em?” 17 Từ hôm đó cho đến ngày thứ bảy của tiệc cưới, nàng cứ thút thít khóc lóc mãi. Cho nên đến ngày thứ bảy, ông chịu không nổi mà phải giải nghĩa câu đố cho nàng; bởi vì nàng cứ liên tục làm áp lực với ông mãi. Nàng liền nói lại cho dân tộc nàng biết câu giải đáp. 18 Trước lúc mặt trời lặn của ngày thứ bảy các thanh niên trong thành đến nói với ông:
“Có gì ngọt hơn mật ong?
Có gì mạnh hơn sư tử?”
Sam-sôn nói với họ:
“Nếu anh em không cày bằng bò cái tơ của tôi,
Thì làm sao anh em có thể giải được câu đố của tôi.”
19 Thần của CHÚA ngự xuống trên ông mạnh mẽ. Ông đi xuống Ách-ca-lôn giết ba mươi người Phi-li-tin, lột lấy quần áo của họ và thưởng cho những người giải đáp được câu đố. Rồi ông nổi giận phừng phừng và bỏ về nhà của cha ông. 20 Còn vợ của Sam-sôn thì bị bắt gả cho một thanh niên trong đám bạn đã đến dự tiệc cưới của ông.

14 And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines.
2 And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.
3 Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
5 Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion roared against him.
6 And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
7 And he went down, and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well.
8 And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion.
9 And he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion.
10 So his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do.
11 And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
12 And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:
13 But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.
14 And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.
15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson's wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father's house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?
16 And Samson's wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?
17 And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people.
18 And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion? and he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.
19 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father's house.
20 But Samson's wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.

Samson’s Philistine Wife
14 Now Samson went down (A)to Timnah, and (B)saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 So he went up and told his father and mother, saying, “I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore, (C)get her for me as a wife.”
3 Then his father and mother said to him, “Is there no woman among the daughters of (D)your brethren, or among all my people, that you must go and get a wife from the (E)uncircumcised Philistines?”
And Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for [a]she pleases me well.”
4 But his father and mother did not know that it was (F)of the Lord—that He was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines. For at that time (G)the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
5 So Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah.
Now to his surprise, a young lion came roaring against him. 6 And (H)the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.
7 Then he went down and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well. 8 After some time, when he returned to get her, he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion. And behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the carcass of the lion. 9 He took some of it in his hands and went along, eating. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them, and they also ate. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey out of the (I)carcass of the lion.
10 So his father went down to the woman. And Samson gave a feast there, for young men used to do so. 11 And it happened, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
12 Then Samson said to them, “Let me (J)pose a riddle to you. If you can correctly solve and explain it to me (K)within the seven days of the feast, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty (L)changes of clothing. 13 But if you cannot explain it to me, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.”
And they said to him, (M)“Pose your riddle, that we may hear it.”
14 So he said to them:
“Out of the eater came something to eat,
And out of the strong came something sweet.”
Now for three days they could not explain the riddle.
15 But it came to pass on the [b]seventh day that they said to Samson’s wife, (N)“Entice your husband, that he may explain the riddle to us, (O)or else we will burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us in order to take what is ours? Is that not so?”
16 Then Samson’s wife wept on him, and said, (P)“You only hate me! You do not love me! You have posed a riddle to the sons of my people, but you have not explained it to me.”
And he said to her, “Look, I have not explained it to my father or my mother; so should I explain it to you?” 17 Now she had wept on him the seven days while their feast lasted. And it happened on the seventh day that he told her, because she pressed him so much. Then she explained the riddle to the sons of her people. 18 So the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down:
“What is sweeter than honey?
And what is stronger than a lion?”
And he said to them:
“If you had not plowed with my heifer,
You would not have solved my riddle!”
19 Then (Q)the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had explained the riddle. So his anger was aroused, and he went back up to his father’s house. 20 And Samson’s wife (R)was given to his companion, who had been (S)his best man.
