Midjanci protiv Izraela
6 Izraelski je narod činio zlo pred BOGOM pa ih je BOG predao Midjancima na sedam godina. 2 Midjanci su tlačili Izraelce, a oni su sebi gradili skloništa u planinama. Sklanjali su hranu u pećine i na teško dostupna mjesta. 3 Jer, kad bi Izraelci sijali usjeve, napadali su ih Midjanci, Amalečani i drugi narodi s istoka. 4 Podizali su svoje tabore i uništavali usjeve Izraelaca na područjima koja su se protezala sve do grada Gaze. Uništili bi im sve zalihe hrane. Nisu im ostavili ni jednu ovcu, govedo niti magarca. 5 Dolazili su sa svojom stokom i šatorima, poput rojeva skakavaca. Ljudi i deva bilo je toliko da ih se nije moglo prebrojati. Upadali su u zemlju i činili štetu. 6 Upadi Midjanaca jako su osiromašili Izrael pa su Izraelci zavapili BOGU za pomoć.
7 Kad su Izraelci zbog Midjanaca zavapili BOGU tražeći pomoć, 8 BOG im je poslao proroka koji je rekao: »Izraelov BOG vam poručuje: ‘Izveo sam vas iz Egipta, oslobodio ropstva. 9 Oslobodio sam vas od vlasti Egipćana i svih drugih koji su vas ugnjetavali. Protjerao sam narode ispred vas i dao vam njihovu zemlju. 10 Rekao sam vam da sam ja vaš BOG. Rekao sam vam da ne smijete štovati bogove Amorejaca, u čijoj zemlji živite. Ali niste me slušali.’«
BOG poziva Gideona
11 Anđeo je BOŽJI došao i sjeo pod hrast u Ofri, na zemlji koja je pripadala Joašu iz Abiezerovog roda. Ondje je njegov sin Gideon čistio pšenicu od pljeve u preši za vino, kako bi je sakrio od Midjanaca.
12 Anđeo BOŽJI ukazao se Gideonu i rekao mu: »BOG je s tobom, hrabri junače.«
13 No Gideon je odgovorio: »Ispričavam se, gospodine, ali ako je BOG s nama, zašto nas je onda ovo snašlo? I gdje su sva ona njegova čudesna djela na koja nas podsjećaju naši očevi? BOG nas je izveo iz Egipta, ali nas je sad napustio i predao Midjancima da nas pokore.«
14 BOG se okrenuo prema njemu i rekao: »Kreni i svojom snagom spasi Izrael od Midjanaca. Ja te šaljem.«
15 »Oprosti, Gospodaru«, odgovorio je Gideon, »ali kako ja mogu spasiti Izrael? Moj je rod najslabiji u Manašeovom plemenu, a ja sam u svojoj obitelji potpuno beznačajan.«
16 »Ja ću biti s tobom«, odgovorio je BOG. »Porazit ćeš Midjance kao da su samo jedan čovjek.«
17 »Ako sam stekao tvoju naklonost«, rekao je tada Gideon, »daj mi znak, da bih bio siguran da zaista BOG govori sa mnom. 18 Molim te, nemoj otići odavde dok se ne vratim i ne donesem ti dar.«
A Gospodar je odgovorio: »Ostat ću dok se ne vratiš.«
19 Gideon je ušao u kuću. Skuhao je meso kozlića i od deset kilograma[a] brašna umijesio beskvasne pogače. Meso je stavio u košaru, a juhu u lonac. Iznio je hranu i poslužio gosta pod hrastom. 20 Božji mu je anđeo rekao da uzme meso i beskvasne pogače, stavi ih na stijenu i prelije juhom. Gideon je tako učinio.
21 Tada je BOŽJI anđeo ispružio ruku i vrhom svoga štapa dotaknuo meso i pogače. Iz stijene je planula vatra i spalila hranu, a BOŽJI je anđeo nestao.
22 Gideon je tada znao da je sreo BOŽJEG anđela. Uzviknuo je: »O moj BOŽE! Vidio sam BOŽJEG anđela, licem u lice!«
23 A BOG je rekao: »Umiri se! Ne boj se! Nećeš umrijeti.«
24 Gideon je ondje podigao žrtvenik BOGU i nazvao ga »BOG je mir«. Žrtvenik i danas stoji u Ofri, na zemlji koja pripada Abiezerovom klanu.
Gideon ruši Baalov žrtvenik
25 Iste je noći BOG rekao Gideonu: »Iz krda svog oca uzmi jednog bika, onoga od sedam godina starosti. Poruši žrtvenik koji je tvoj otac podigao bogu Baalu i pored njega posjeci kip božice Ašere. 26 Na toj uzvisini zatim napravi i uredi žrtvenik svome BOGU. Potom uzmi bika i prinesi ga kao žrtvu paljenicu. Spali ga na drvima od slomljenoga kipa božice Ašere.«
27 Gideon je pozvao desetoricu svojih slugu i učinio kako mu je rekao BOG. No zbog straha od svoje obitelji i ljudi iz grada, nije to učinio danju, već noću. 28 Kad su ljudi iz grada ustali sutradan rano ujutro, vidjeli su razrušen Baalov žrtvenik i pored njega sasječen kip božice Ašere. Vidjeli su i bika prinesenog na novom žrtveniku.
29 »Tko li je to učinio?« pitali su jedan drugoga.
Nakon raspitivanja i istrage, doznali su da je to učinio Gideon, Joašev sin.
30 Rekli su Joašu: »Dovedi sina jer mora umrijeti. Srušio je Baalov žrtvenik i posjekao kip božice Ašere.«
31 No Joaš je svima odgovorio: »Zar ćete se zauzeti za Baala? Zar ćete njega braniti? Jer, tko god ga bude branio, do jutra će umrijeti. Ako je Baal bog, neka se sâm brani kad netko sruši njegov žrtvenik.«
32 Toga su dana Gideona prozvali Jerubaal[b] jer je porušio Baalov žrtvenik.
Gideon okuplja vojsku
33 Svi Midjanci, Amalečani i drugi narodi s istoka okupili su se, prešli rijeku Jordan i utaborili se u dolini grada Jezreela. 34 BOŽJI je duh obuzeo Gideona. Zatrubio je u rog i sazvao pripadnike Abiezerovog klana da ga slijede. 35 I cijelome Manašeovom plemenu poslao je glasnike, pozivajući narod da ga slijedi. Poslao je također glasnike u Ašerovo, Zebulunovo i Naftalijevo pleme. Oni su mu krenuli ususret.
36 Tada je Gideon rekao Bogu: »Ako je tvoja namjera da uz moju pomoć oslobodiš Izrael, potvrdi mi to. 37 Ostavit ću ovčju vunu na gumnu[c]. Ako ujutro nađem da je rosa pala samo na vunu, a svuda uokolo zemlja ostane suha, znat ću da ćeš uz moju pomoć osloboditi Izrael, kao što si rekao.«
38 Tako je i bilo. Gideon je ustao sutradan rano ujutro, stisnuo vunu i iscijedio iz nje rosu koje je bilo dovoljno da se jedna zdjela napuni vodom.
39 Tada je Gideon rekao Bogu: »Nemoj se ljutiti na mene. Dopusti da još jednom provjerim. Molim te, neka ovaj put vuna ostane suha, a rosa neka padne svuda uokolo po zemlji.«
40 Bog je i te noći učinio što je Gideon tražio. Vuna je ostala suha, a rosa je pala svuda uokolo po zemlji.

6 MAS los hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo en los ojos de Jehová; y Jehová los entregó en las manos de Madián por siete años.
2 Y la mano de Madián prevaleció contra Israel. Y los hijos de Israel, por causa de los Madianitas, se hicieron cuevas en los montes, y cavernas, y lugares fuertes.
3 Pues como los de Israel habían sembrado, subían los Madianitas, y Amalecitas, y los orientales: subían contra ellos;
4 Y asentando campo contra ellos destruían los frutos de la tierra, hasta llegar á Gaza; y no dejaban qué comer en Israel, ni ovejas, ni bueyes, ni asnos.
5 Porque subían ellos y sus ganados, y venían con sus tiendas en grande multitud como langosta, que no había número en ellos ni en sus camellos: así venían á la tierra para devastarla.
6 Era pues Israel en gran manera empobrecido por los Madianitas; y los hijos de Israel clamaron á Jehová.
7 Y cuando los hijos de Israel hubieron clamado á Jehová, á causa de los Madianitas,
8 Jehová envió un varón profeta á los hijos de Israel, el cual les dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová Dios de Israel: Yo os hice salir de Egipto, y os saqué de la casa de servidumbre:
9 Yo os libré de mano de los Egipcios, y de mano de todos los que os afligieron, á los cuales eché de delante de vosotros, y os dí su tierra;
10 Y díjeos: Yo soy Jehová vuestro Dios; no temáis á los dioses de los Amorrheos, en cuya tierra habitáis: mas no habéis obedecido á mi voz.
11 Y vino el ángel de Jehová, y sentóse debajo del alcornoque que está en Ophra, el cual era de Joas Abiezerita; y su hijo Gedeón estaba sacudiendo el trigo en el lagar, para hacerlo esconder de los Madianitas.
12 Y el ángel de Jehová se le apareció, y díjole: Jehová es contigo, varón esforzado.
13 Y Gedeón le respondió: Ah, Señor mío, si Jehová es con nosotros, ¿por qué nos ha sobrevenido todo esto? ¿Y dónde están todas sus maravillas, que nuestros padres nos han contado, diciendo: ¿No nos sacó Jehová de Egipto? Y ahora Jehová nos ha desamparado, y nos ha entregado en manos de los Madianitas.
14 Y mirándole Jehová, díjole: Ve con esta tu fortaleza, y salvarás á Israel de la mano de los Madianitas. ¿No te envío yo?
15 Entonces le respondió: Ah, Señor mío, ¿con qué tengo de salvar á Israel? He aquí que mi familia es pobre en Manasés, y yo el menor en la casa de mi padre.
16 Y Jehová le dijo: Porque yo seré contigo, y herirás á los Madianitas como á un solo hombre.
17 Y él respondió: Yo te ruego, que si he hallado gracia delante de ti, me des señal de que tú has hablado conmigo.
18 Ruégote que no te vayas de aquí, hasta que á ti vuelva, y saque mi presente, y lo ponga delante de ti. Y él respondió: Yo esperaré hasta que vuelvas.
19 Y entrándose Gedeón aderezó un cabrito, y panes sin levadura de un epha de harina; y puso la carne en un canastillo, y el caldo en una olla, y sacándolo presentóselo debajo de aquel alcornoque.
20 Y el ángel de Dios le dijo: Toma la carne, y los panes sin levadura, y ponlo sobre esta peña, y vierte el caldo. Y él lo hizo así.
21 Y extendiendo el ángel de Jehová el bordón que tenía en su mano, tocó con la punta en la carne y en los panes sin levadura; y subió fuego de la peña, el cual consumió la carne y los panes sin levadura. Y el ángel de Jehová desapareció de delante de él.
22 Y viendo Gedeón que era el ángel de Jehová, dijo: Ah, Señor Jehová, que he visto el ángel de Jehová cara á cara.
23 Y Jehová le dijo: Paz á ti; no tengas temor, no morirás.
24 Y edificó allí Gedeón altar á Jehová, al que llamó Jehová-salom: está hasta hoy en Ophra de los Abiezeritas.
25 Y aconteció que la misma noche le dijo Jehová: Toma un toro del hato de tu padre, y otro toro de siete años, y derriba el altar de Baal que tu padre tiene, y corta también el bosque que está junto á él:
26 Y edifica altar á Jehová tu Dios en la cumbre de este peñasco en lugar conveniente; y tomando el segundo toro, sacrifícalo en holocausto sobre la leña del bosque que habrás cortado.
27 Entonces Gedeón tomó diez hombres de sus siervos, é hizo como Jehová le dijo. Mas temiendo hacerlo de día, por la familia de su padre y por los hombres de la ciudad, hízolo de noche.
28 Y á la mañana, cuando los de la ciudad se levantaron, he aquí que el altar de Baal estaba derribado, y cortado el bosque que junto á él estaba, y sacrificado aquel segundo toro en holocausto sobre el altar edificado.
29 Y decíanse unos á otros: ¿Quién ha hecho esto? Y buscando é inquiriendo, dijéronles: Gedeón hijo de Joas lo ha hecho. Entonces los hombres de la ciudad dijeron á Joas:
30 Saca fuera tu hijo para que muera, por cuanto ha derribado el altar de Baal y ha cortado el bosque que junto á él estaba.
31 Y Joas respondió á todos los que estaban junto á él: ¿Tomaréis vosotros la demanda por Baal? ¿le salvaréis vosotros? Cualquiera que tomare la demanda por él, que muera mañana. Si es Dios, contienda por sí mismo con el que derribó su altar.
32 Y aquel día llamó él á Gedeón Jerobaal; porque dijo: Pleitee Baal contra el que derribó su altar.
33 Y todos los Madianitas, y Amalecitas, y orientales, se juntaron á una, y pasando asentaron campo en el valle de Jezreel.
34 Y el espíritu de Jehová se envistió en Gedeón, y como éste hubo tocado el cuerno, Abiezer se juntó con él.
35 Y envió mensajeros por todo Manasés, el cual también se juntó con él: asimismo envió mensajeros á Aser, y á Zabulón, y á Nephtalí, los cuales salieron á encontrarles.
36 Y Gedeón dijo á Dios: Si has de salvar á Israel por mi mano, como has dicho,
37 He aquí que yo pondré un vellón de lana en la era; y si el rocío estuviere en el vellón solamente, quedando seca toda la otra tierra, entonces entenderé que has de salvar á Israel por mi mano, como lo has dicho.
38 Y aconteció así: porque como se levantó de mañana, exprimiendo el vellón sacó de él el rocío, un vaso lleno de agua.
39 Mas Gedeón dijo á Dios: No se encienda tu ira contra mí, si aun hablare esta vez: solamente probaré ahora otra vez con el vellón. Ruégote que la sequedad sea sólo en el vellón, y el rocío sobre la tierra.
40 Y aquella noche lo hizo Dios así: porque la sequedad fué sólo en el vellón, y en toda la tierra estuvo el rocío.

6 The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord,(A) and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites.(B) 2 Because the power of Midian was so oppressive,(C) the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves(D) and strongholds.(E) 3 Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites(F) and other eastern peoples(G) invaded the country. 4 They camped on the land and ruined the crops(H) all the way to Gaza(I) and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys. 5 They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts.(J) It was impossible to count them or their camels;(K) they invaded the land to ravage it. 6 Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out(L) to the Lord for help.
7 When the Israelites cried out(M) to the Lord because of Midian, 8 he sent them a prophet,(N) who said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt,(O) out of the land of slavery.(P) 9 I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians. And I delivered you from the hand of all your oppressors;(Q) I drove them out before you and gave you their land.(R) 10 I said to you, ‘I am the Lord your God; do not worship(S) the gods of the Amorites,(T) in whose land you live.’ But you have not listened to me.”
11 The angel of the Lord(U) came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah(V) that belonged to Joash(W) the Abiezrite,(X) where his son Gideon(Y) was threshing(Z) wheat in a winepress(AA) to keep it from the Midianites. 12 When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you,(AB) mighty warrior.(AC)”
13 “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders(AD) that our ancestors told(AE) us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned(AF) us and given us into the hand of Midian.”
14 The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have(AG) and save(AH) Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?”
15 “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan(AI) is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.(AJ)”
16 The Lord answered, “I will be with you(AK), and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive.”
17 Gideon replied, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign(AL) that it is really you talking to me. 18 Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you.”
And the Lord said, “I will wait until you return.”
19 Gideon went inside, prepared a young goat,(AM) and from an ephah[a](AN) of flour he made bread without yeast. Putting the meat in a basket and its broth in a pot, he brought them out and offered them to him under the oak.(AO)
20 The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock,(AP) and pour out the broth.” And Gideon did so. 21 Then the angel of the Lord touched the meat and the unleavened bread(AQ) with the tip of the staff(AR) that was in his hand. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the Lord disappeared. 22 When Gideon realized(AS) that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!”(AT)
23 But the Lord said to him, “Peace! Do not be afraid.(AU) You are not going to die.”(AV)
24 So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called(AW) it The Lord Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah(AX) of the Abiezrites.
25 That same night the Lord said to him, “Take the second bull from your father’s herd, the one seven years old.[b] Tear down your father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole[c](AY) beside it. 26 Then build a proper kind of[d] altar to the Lord your God on the top of this height. Using the wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second[e] bull as a burnt offering.(AZ)”
27 So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the Lord told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople, he did it at night rather than in the daytime.
28 In the morning when the people of the town got up, there was Baal’s altar,(BA) demolished, with the Asherah pole beside it cut down and the second bull sacrificed on the newly built altar!
29 They asked each other, “Who did this?”
When they carefully investigated, they were told, “Gideon son of Joash(BB) did it.”
30 The people of the town demanded of Joash, “Bring out your son. He must die, because he has broken down Baal’s altar(BC) and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.”
31 But Joash replied to the hostile crowd around him, “Are you going to plead Baal’s cause?(BD) Are you trying to save him? Whoever fights for him shall be put to death by morning! If Baal really is a god, he can defend himself when someone breaks down his altar.” 32 So because Gideon broke down Baal’s altar, they gave him the name Jerub-Baal[f](BE) that day, saying, “Let Baal contend with him.”
33 Now all the Midianites, Amalekites(BF) and other eastern peoples(BG) joined forces and crossed over the Jordan and camped in the Valley of Jezreel.(BH) 34 Then the Spirit of the Lord came on(BI) Gideon, and he blew a trumpet,(BJ) summoning the Abiezrites(BK) to follow him. 35 He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, calling them to arms, and also into Asher,(BL) Zebulun and Naphtali,(BM) so that they too went up to meet them.(BN)
36 Gideon said to God, “If you will save(BO) Israel by my hand as you have promised— 37 look, I will place a wool fleece(BP) on the threshing floor.(BQ) If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know(BR) that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said.” 38 And that is what happened. Gideon rose early the next day; he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew—a bowlful of water.
39 Then Gideon said to God, “Do not be angry with me. Let me make just one more request.(BS) Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew.” 40 That night God did so. Only the fleece was dry; all the ground was covered with dew.(BT)
