Samson u gradu Gazi
16 Jednom je Samson otišao u grad Gazu. Ondje je vidio prostitutku i odlučio provesti noć s njom.
2 Stanovnicima je Gaze bilo dojavljeno: »Samson je došao u grad!«
Tada su opkolili grad i cijelu noć čekali u zasjedi na gradskim vratima. Tijekom noći nisu poduzimali ništa. U zoru su planirali napasti Samsona.
3 No on je ležao samo do ponoći. U ponoć je ustao, primio gradska vrata i izvalio ih zajedno s držačima i metalnim šipkama. Stavio ih je na ramena i odnio na vrh jednog brda, na putu prema gradu Hebronu.
Samson i Delila
4 Nakon ovih događaja, zaljubio se u ženu iz doline Sorek. Zvala se Delila.
5 Filistejski su vladari došli k njoj i rekli: »Nagovori ga da ti otkrije u čemu je tajna njegove snage. Saznaj kako ga možemo svladati i svezati. Tako ćemo ga pokoriti. Ako to učiniš, svaki od nas dat će ti tisuću i sto srebrnjaka[a].«
6 Delila je pitala Samsona: »Molim te, reci mi u čemu je tajna tvoje snage? Kako bi te netko mogao svezati i onesposobiti?«
7 Samson joj je odgovorio: »Kad bi me netko svezao sedmerim novim tetivama za lûk[b], bio bih nemoćan kao bilo koji drugi čovjek.«
8 Tada su filistejski vladari donijeli sedam novih tetiva za lûk, koje se još nisu osušile. Delila je njima svezala Samsona.
9 Dok su u drugoj sobi ljudi čekali u zasjedi, povikala je: »Samsone, dolaze Filistejci!«
No on je raskinuo tetive, kao da su niti koje izgaraju u plamenu. Tajna njegove snage nije bila otkrivena.
10 Delila je tada rekla Samsonu: »Prevario si me. Lagao si. A sad mi, molim te, reci kako te netko može svezati.«
11 »Kad bi me vezali novim konopima koji još nisu korišteni«, rekao je on, »postao bih slab kao bilo koji drugi čovjek.«
12 Delila je uzela nove konope i svezala ga. Dok su u drugoj sobi ljudi čekali u zasjedi, povikala je: »Samsone, dolaze Filistejci!«
Ali on je pokidao konope sa svojih ruku kao da su konci.
13 Delila je rekla Samsonu: »Dosad si me varao i govorio mi laži. A sad mi reci kako te netko može svezati.«
»Kad bi sedam pletenica[c] moje kose utkala u spravu za tkanje«, rekao joj je, »postao bih slab kao bilo koji drugi čovjek.«
14 Dok je Samson spavao, Delila je sedam pletenica njegove kose utkala u spravu za tkanje. Viknula je: »Samsone, dolaze Filistejci!«
No on se probudio i oslobodio kosu iz sprave za tkanje.
15 Delila mu je tada rekla: »Kako možeš reći da me voliš, kad mi nisi otvorio svoje srce? Tri puta si me prevario, a još uvijek mi nisi rekao u čemu je tajna tvoje velike snage.«
16 Dosađivala je i nagovarala ga iz dana u dan. A onda mu je bilo svega dosta jer se osjećao izmoren do smrti. 17 Povjerio joj se: »Britva nikad nije dotakla moju kosu. Posvećen sam Bogu još od majčine utrobe. Kad bi me netko ošišao na ćelavo, snaga bi me napustila. Postao bih slab poput svakog drugoga čovjeka.«
18 Shvativši da joj se iskreno povjerio, Delila je poručila filistejskim vladarima: »Dođite još jedanput. Otkrio mi je svoju tajnu.«
Tada su filistejski vladari došli i donijeli joj ranije ugovoreni novac. 19 Uspavala je Samsona na svom krilu i pozvala jednog čovjeka da mu s glave odreže sedam pletenica. Tako je Samson onemoćao i napustila ga je snaga.
20 Ona je povikala: »Samsone, dolaze Filistejci!«
On se probudio. Pomislio je da će se izvući kao i mnogo puta prije. No nije znao da ga je napustio BOG.
21 Filistejci su ga uhvatili, iskopali mu oči i odveli u grad Gazu. Okovali su ga brončanim lancima i dali mu da u zatvoru gura mlinski kamen i melje žito. 22 No kosa je na njegovoj glavi počela ponovo rasti.
Samsonova smrt
23 Filistejski su se vladari okupili da bi prinijeli veliku žrtvu svome bogu Dagonu i proveselili se.
Govorili su: »Naš nam je bog predao našega neprijatelja Samsona.«
24 Kad je narod vidio Samsona, slavili su svog boga. Govorili su: »Naš nam je bog predao našeg neprijatelja koji nam je opustošio zemlju i pobio mnogo ljudi.«
25 Zavladalo je dobro raspoloženje pa su povikali: »Pozovite Samsona! Neka nas zabavlja!«
Iz zatvora su doveli vezanog Samsona, a on je pred njima morao plesati.
Zatim su ga postavili između stupova Dagonovog hrama. 26 Mladiću, koji ga je vodio za ruku, Samson je rekao: »Daj mi da opipam stupove na kojima stoji hram. Želim se na njih nasloniti.«
27 Hram je bio pun muškaraca i žena. Svi su filistejski vladari bili ondje. Na krovu hrama bilo je oko tri tisuće muškaraca i žena koji su se ondje izrugivali Samsonu.
28 Samson je zavapio BOGU za pomoć: »Gospodaru BOŽE, sjeti me se. Molim te, daj mi snage još samo ovaj put. O Bože, daj mi da se osvetim Filistejcima za svoje oči.«
29 Samson se oslonio o dva središnja stupa na kojima je stajao hram. Desnom se rukom odupro o jedan, a lijevom o drugi stup. 30 Povikao je: »Daj mi da umrem s Filistejcima!«
Gurnuo je stupove svom snagom i hram se srušio na vladare i sav okupljeni narod. Tako je Samson više ljudi ubio umirući nego za svoga života.
31 Njegova su braća i cijela njegova obitelj došli preuzeti tijelo. Odnijeli su ga i pokopali u grobnici njegovog oca Manoaha, koja je između gradova Sore i Eštaola.
Samson je bio sudac u Izraelu dvadeset godina.

Samson Goes to the City of Gaza
16 One day Samson went to Gaza. He saw a prostitute there. He went in to spend the night with her. 2 Someone told the people of Gaza, “Samson has come here!” So they surrounded the place and hid and waited for him. Remaining very quiet, they stayed near the city gate all night. They said to each other, “When dawn comes, we will kill Samson!”
3 But Samson only stayed with the prostitute until midnight. Then he got up and took hold of the doors and the two posts of the city gate. He tore them loose, along with the bar. Then he put them on his shoulders. And he carried them to the top of the hill that faces the city of Hebron!
Samson and Delilah
4 After this, Samson fell in love with a woman named Delilah. She lived in the Valley of Sorek. 5 The kings of the Philistines went to Delilah. They said, “Try to find out what makes Samson so strong. Try to trick him into telling you. Find out how we could capture him and tie him up. Then we will be able to control him. If you do this, each one of us will give you 28 pounds of silver.”
6 So Delilah said to Samson, “Tell me why you are so strong. How could someone tie you up and take control of you?”
7 Samson answered, “Someone would have to tie me up. He would have to use seven new bowstrings that have not been dried. If he did that, I would be as weak as any other man.”
8 Then the kings of the Philistines brought seven new bowstrings to Delilah. They had not been dried. She tied Samson with them. 9 Some men were hiding in another room. Delilah said to Samson, “Samson, the Philistines are about to capture you!” But Samson easily broke the bowstrings. They broke like pieces of string burned in a fire. So the Philistines did not find out the secret of Samson’s strength.
10 Then Delilah said to Samson, “You’ve made me look foolish. You lied to me. Please tell me. How could someone tie you up?”
11 Samson said, “They would have to tie me with new ropes that have not been used before. Then I would become as weak as any other man.”
12 So Delilah took new ropes and tied Samson. Some men were hiding in another room. Then she called out to him, “Samson, the Philistines are about to capture you!” But he broke the ropes as easily as if they were threads.
13 Then Delilah said to Samson, “Until now, you have made me look foolish. You have lied to me. Tell me how someone could tie you up.”
He said, “Use the loom.[a] Weave the seven braids of my hair into the cloth. Tighten it with a pin. Then I will become as weak as any other man.”
Then Samson went to sleep. So Delilah wove the seven braids of his hair into the cloth. 14 Then she fastened it with a pin.
Again she called out to him, “Samson, the Philistines are about to capture you!” Samson woke up and pulled up the pin and the loom with the cloth.
15 Then Delilah said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when you don’t even trust me? This is the third time you have made me look foolish. You haven’t told me the secret of your great strength.” 16 She kept bothering Samson about his secret day after day. He became so tired of it he felt he was going to die!
17 So he told her everything. He said, “I have never had my hair cut. I have been set apart to God as a Nazirite since I was born. If someone shaved my head, then I would lose my strength. I would become as weak as any other man.”
18 Delilah saw that he had told her everything sincerely. So she sent a message to the kings of the Philistines. She said, “Come back one more time. He has told me everything.” So the kings of the Philistines came back to Delilah. They brought the silver they had promised to give her. 19 Delilah got Samson to go to sleep. He was lying in her lap. Then she called in a man to shave off the seven braids of Samson’s hair. In this way she began to make him weak. And Samson’s strength left him.
20 Then she called out to him, “Samson, the Philistines are about to capture you!”
He woke up and thought, “I’ll get loose as I did before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.
21 Then the Philistines captured Samson. They tore out his eyes. And they took him down to Gaza. They put bronze chains on him. They put him in prison and made him grind grain. 22 But his hair began to grow again.
Samson Dies
23 The kings of the Philistines gathered to celebrate. They were going to offer a great sacrifice to their god Dagon. They said, “Our god has given us Samson our enemy.” 24 When they saw him, they praised their god. They said,
“This man destroyed our country.
He killed many of us!
But our god helped us
capture our enemy.”
25 The people were having a good time at the celebration. They said, “Bring Samson out to perform for us.” So they brought Samson from the prison. He performed for them. They made him stand between the pillars of the temple of Dagon. 26 A servant was holding his hand. Samson said to him, “Let me feel the pillars that hold up the temple. I want to lean against them.” 27 Now the temple was full of men and women. All the kings of the Philistines were there. There were about 3,000 men and women on the roof.[b] They watched Samson perform. 28 Then Samson prayed to the Lord. He said, “Lord God, remember me. God, please give me strength one more time. Let me pay these Philistines back for putting out my two eyes!” 29 Then Samson held the two center pillars of the temple. These two pillars supported the whole temple. He braced himself between the two pillars. His right hand was on one, and his left hand was on the other. 30 Samson said, “Let me die with these Philistines!” Then he pushed as hard as he could. And the temple fell on the kings and all the people in it. So Samson killed more of the Philistines when he died than when he was alive.
31 Samson’s brothers and his whole family went down to get his body. They brought him back and buried him in the tomb of Manoah, his father. That tomb is between the cities of Zorah and Eshtaol. Samson was a judge for the people of Israel for 20 years.

Samson and Delilah
16 One day Samson(A) went to Gaza,(B) where he saw a prostitute.(C) He went in to spend the night with her. 2 The people of Gaza were told, “Samson is here!” So they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate.(D) They made no move during the night, saying, “At dawn(E) we’ll kill him.”
3 But Samson lay there only until the middle of the night. Then he got up and took hold of the doors of the city gate, together with the two posts, and tore them loose, bar and all. He lifted them to his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.(F)
4 Some time later, he fell in love(G) with a woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah.(H) 5 The rulers of the Philistines(I) went to her and said, “See if you can lure(J) him into showing you the secret of his great strength(K) and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels[a] of silver.”(L)
6 So Delilah(M) said to Samson, “Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued.”
7 Samson answered her, “If anyone ties me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”
8 Then the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she tied him with them. 9 With men hidden in the room,(N) she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(O) But he snapped the bowstrings as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.
10 Then Delilah said to Samson, “You have made a fool of me;(P) you lied to me. Come now, tell me how you can be tied.”
11 He said, “If anyone ties me securely with new ropes(Q) that have never been used, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”
12 So Delilah took new ropes and tied him with them. Then, with men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(R) But he snapped the ropes off his arms as if they were threads.
13 Delilah then said to Samson, “All this time you have been making a fool of me and lying to me. Tell me how you can be tied.”
He replied, “If you weave the seven braids of my head into the fabric on the loom and tighten it with the pin, I’ll become as weak as any other man.” So while he was sleeping, Delilah took the seven braids of his head, wove them into the fabric 14 and[b] tightened it with the pin.
Again she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(S) He awoke from his sleep and pulled up the pin and the loom, with the fabric.
15 Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’(T) when you won’t confide in me? This is the third time(U) you have made a fool of me and haven’t told me the secret of your great strength.(V)” 16 With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was sick to death of it.
17 So he told her everything.(W) “No razor has ever been used on my head,” he said, “because I have been a Nazirite(X) dedicated to God from my mother’s womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.”
18 When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines(Y), “Come back once more; he has told me everything.” So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands.(Z) 19 After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him.[c] And his strength left him.(AA)
20 Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(AB)
He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.(AC)
21 Then the Philistines(AD) seized him, gouged out his eyes(AE) and took him down to Gaza.(AF) Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding grain(AG) in the prison. 22 But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.
The Death of Samson
23 Now the rulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon(AH) their god and to celebrate, saying, “Our god has delivered Samson, our enemy, into our hands.”
24 When the people saw him, they praised their god,(AI) saying,
“Our god has delivered our enemy
into our hands,(AJ)
the one who laid waste our land
and multiplied our slain.”
25 While they were in high spirits,(AK) they shouted, “Bring out Samson to entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and he performed for them.
When they stood him among the pillars, 26 Samson said to the servant who held his hand, “Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them.” 27 Now the temple was crowded with men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof(AL) were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. 28 Then Samson prayed to the Lord,(AM) “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge(AN) on the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29 Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, 30 Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.
31 Then his brothers and his father’s whole family went down to get him. They brought him back and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah(AO) his father. He had led[d](AP) Israel twenty years.(AQ)
