Izraelci protiv Kanaanaca
1 Nakon Jošuine smrti, Izraelci su pitali BOGA: »Koje naše pleme treba krenuti prvo i boriti se protiv Kanaanaca?«
2 BOG je odgovorio: »Neka ide Judino pleme. Njima ću dati ovu zemlju.«
3 Judejci su zvali svoju braću iz Šimunovog plemena: »Pođite s nama, na područje koje nam je dodijeljeno. Borite se zajedno s nama protiv Kanaanaca. A kad se vi budete borili za svoju zemlju, mi ćemo vama pomagati.«
Tako su ljudi iz Šimunovog plemena otišli s Judejcima.
4 Judejci su napali, a BOG im je dao pobjedu nad Kanaancima i Perižanima. Pobili su deset tisuća ljudi kod grada Bezeka. 5 U gradu su zatekli vladara Bezeka. Borili su se protiv njega i porazili Kanaanace i Perižane. 6 Vladar Bezeka je pobjegao, ali krenuli su za njim u potjeru. Uhvatili su ga i odsjekli mu palčeve na rukama i nogama.[a]
7 Rekao je: »Sedamdeset kraljeva s odsječenim palčevima na rukama i nogama skupljalo je ostatke hrane pod mojim stolom. Bog mi je učinio ono što sam ja učinio njima.«
Judejci su vladara Bezeka doveli u Jeruzalem, gdje je i umro.
Judejci zauzimaju Jeruzalem i Hebron
8 Judejci su napali Jeruzalem i zauzeli grad. Stanovnike su pobili mačevima, a grad zapalili.
9 Poslije su se borili protiv Kanaanaca koji su živjeli u planinama, u pustinji Negev, te u dolinama prema zapadu. 10 Napali su i Kanaanace u gradu Hebronu, koji se prije zvao Kirjat Arba. Porazili su Šešaja, Ahimana i Talmaja[b].
Kaleb i njegova kći
(Jš 15,13-19)
11 Odatle su krenuli protiv stanovnika grada Debira, koji se prije zvao Kirjat Sefer. 12 Kaleb je rekao: »Tko napadne i zauzme Kirjat Sefer, dat ću mu svoju kćer Aksu za ženu.«
13 To je učinio Otniel, sin Kalebovog mlađega brata Kenaza, a Kaleb mu je dao svoju kćer Aksu za ženu.
14 Nakon što su se vjenčali, Aksa je nagovarala Otniela da traže od njezinog oca zemlju. Tako je jednom otišla k svome ocu. Dok je silazila s magarca, Kaleb ju je upitao: »Što želiš?«
15 Odgovorila je: »Blagoslovi me. Dao si mi suhu zemlju u pustinji. Daruj mi i izvore vode.«
Tako je Kaleb svojoj kćeri darovao gornje i donje izvore.
16 Kenijevci, potomci Mojsijevog tasta, krenuli su s Judejcima iz Grada Palmi[c] u judejsku pustinju. Nastanili su se među tamošnjim narodom u Negevu, blizu grada Arada.
17 Judejci su sa svojom braćom iz Šimunovog plemena porazili Kanaanace koji su živjeli u Sefatu. Grad su potpuno uništili te se i danas zove Horma[d]. 18 Judejci su zauzeli i Gazu, Aškelon i Ekron, s okolnim područjima.
19 BOG je bio s Judejcima pa su zauzeli planinska područja. Nisu uspjeli protjerati stanovnike iz ravnica jer su ovi imali željezna bojna kola. 20 Područje Hebrona dodijeljeno je Kalebu, kao što je Mojsije bio obećao. Odatle je protjerao trojicu Anakovih sinova[e].
21 Ljudi iz Benjaminovog plemena nisu uspjeli protjerati Jebusejce iz Jeruzalema. Jebusejci sve do danas[f] žive ondje zajedno s ljudima iz Benjaminovog plemena.
Josipovi potomci osvajaju Betel
22 Ljudi iz Josipovog plemena napali su Betel, a BOG je bio uz njih. 23 Poslali su uhode u Betel, grad koji se prije zvao Luz. 24 Vidjeli su čovjeka kako izlazi iz grada i rekli mu: »Molim te, pokaži nam kako da uđemo u grad i nećemo ti nauditi.« 25 Pokazao im je kako da uđu u grad. Pobili su mačem stanovnike grada, a toga čovjeka i cijelu njegovu obitelj pustili su da slobodno odu. 26 On je otišao u zemlju Hetita i izgradio grad. Nazvao ga je Luz. Grad se i danas tako zove.
Druga izraelska plemena i Kanaanci
27 Pripadnici plemena Manaše nisu uspjeli protjerati stanovnike iz gradova Bet Šean, Taanak, Dor, Ibleam i Megido, kao ni stanovnike koji su živjeli u okolnim selima. Kanaanci su odlučili ostati u zemlji. 28 Kad su Izraelci ojačali, prisilili su Kanaance na robovski rad. No nisu ih mogli prisiliti da odu iz zemlje.
29 Ljudi iz plemena Efrajim nisu uspjeli protjerati Kanaanace koji su živjeli u Gezeru. Ostali su ondje živjeti zajedno.
30 Zebulunovi potomci nisu protjerali stanovnike Kitrona i Nahalola. Kanaanci su ostali živjeti s njima, ali su im postali robovi.
31 Ašerovi potomci nisu protjerali stanovnike iz gradova Aka, Sidona, Ahlaba, Akziba, Helbe, Afika i Rehoba. 32 Ašerovci su tako živjeli među Kanaancima starosjediocima jer ih nisu uspjeli protjerati.
33 Ljudi iz plemena Naftali nisu protjerali stanovnike gradova Bet Šemeša i Bet Anata. Živjeli su među Kanaancima, stanovnicima toga kraja. Stanovnike su Bet Šemeša i Bet Anata prisilili na ropstvo.
34 Amorejci su potisnuli pripadnike plemena Dan u planine. Nisu im dopuštali silazak u nizinu. 35 Amorejci su odbili napustiti područje planine Heres te gradove Ajalon i Šaalbim. Kasnije su Josipovi potomci ojačali i prisilili Amorejce na robovski rad. 36 Područje Amorejaca pruža se između prijevoja Akrabim i mjesta Sela, pa gore u brda.

Israel’s Failure to Complete the Conquest of Canaan
1 After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the Lord, ‘Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?’ 2 The Lord said, ‘Judah shall go up. I hereby give the land into his hand.’ 3 Judah said to his brother Simeon, ‘Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; then I too will go with you into the territory allotted to you.’ So Simeon went with him. 4 Then Judah went up and the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they defeated ten thousand of them at Bezek. 5 They came upon Adoni-bezek at Bezek, and fought against him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites. 6 Adoni-bezek fled; but they pursued him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes. 7 Adoni-bezek said, ‘Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has paid me back.’ They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
8 Then the people of Judah fought against Jerusalem and took it. They put it to the sword and set the city on fire. 9 Afterwards the people of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowlands. 10 Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba); and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.
11 From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir (the name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher). 12 Then Caleb said, ‘Whoever attacks Kiriath-sepher and takes it, I will give him my daughter Achsah as wife.’ 13 And Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; and he gave him his daughter Achsah as wife. 14 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. As she dismounted from her donkey, Caleb said to her, ‘What do you want?’ 15 She said to him, ‘Give me a present; since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also Gulloth-mayim.’[a] So Caleb gave her Upper Gulloth and Lower Gulloth.
16 The descendants of Hobab[b] the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad. Then they went and settled with the Amalekites.[c] 17 Judah went with his brother Simeon, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and devoted it to destruction. So the city was called Hormah. 18 Judah took Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. 19 The Lord was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain, because they had chariots of iron. 20 Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said; and he drove out from it the three sons of Anak. 21 But the Benjaminites did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have lived in Jerusalem among the Benjaminites to this day.
22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the Lord was with them. 23 The house of Joseph sent out spies to Bethel (the name of the city was formerly Luz). 24 When the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him, ‘Show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.’ 25 So he showed them the way into the city; and they put the city to the sword, but they let the man and all his family go. 26 So the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city, and named it Luz; that is its name to this day.
27 Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; but the Canaanites continued to live in that land. 28 When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labour, but did not in fact drive them out.
29 And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer; but the Canaanites lived among them in Gezer.
30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites lived among them, and became subject to forced labour.
31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob; 32 but the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.
33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labour for them.
34 The Amorites pressed the Danites back into the hill country; they did not allow them to come down to the plain. 35 The Amorites continued to live in Har-heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labour. 36 The border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upwards.

Israel Fights the Remaining Canaanites(A)
1 After the death(B) of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord, “Who of us is to go up first(C) to fight against the Canaanites?(D)”
2 The Lord answered, “Judah(E) shall go up; I have given the land into their hands.(F)”
3 The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, “Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours.” So the Simeonites(G) went with them.
4 When Judah attacked, the Lord gave the Canaanites and Perizzites(H) into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.(I) 5 It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek(J) and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites. 6 Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
7 Then Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back(K) for what I did to them.” They brought him to Jerusalem,(L) and he died there.

12 And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” 13 Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.
14 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him[a] to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”
15 She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.(T)
16 The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law,(U) the Kenite,(V) went up from the City of Palms[b](W) with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.(X)
17 Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites(Y) their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed[c] the city. Therefore it was called Hormah.[d](Z) 18 Judah also took[e] Gaza,(AA) Ashkelon(AB) and Ekron—each city with its territory.
19 The Lord was with(AC) the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country,(AD) but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron.(AE) 20 As Moses had promised, Hebron(AF) was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak.(AG) 21 The Benjamites, however, did not drive out(AH) the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem;(AI) to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.
22 Now the tribes of Joseph(AJ) attacked Bethel,(AK) and the Lord was with them. 23 When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz),(AL) 24 the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.(AM)” 25 So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared(AN) the man and his whole family. 26 He then went to the land of the Hittites,(AO) where he built a city and called it Luz,(AP) which is its name to this day.
27 But Manasseh did not(AQ) drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor(AR) or Ibleam(AS) or Megiddo(AT) and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites(AU) were determined to live in that land. 28 When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.(AV) 29 Nor did Ephraim(AW) drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer,(AX) but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.(AY) 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor. 31 Nor did Asher(AZ) drive out those living in Akko or Sidon(BA) or Ahlab or Akzib(BB) or Helbah or Aphek(BC) or Rehob.(BD) 32 The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out. 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh(BE) or Beth Anath(BF); but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. 34 The Amorites(BG) confined the Danites(BH) to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.(BI) 35 And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres,(BJ) Aijalon(BK) and Shaalbim,(BL) but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. 36 The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass(BM) to Sela(BN) and beyond.(BO)
