The Girl: “Oh, if only you were my brother; then I could kiss you no matter who was watching, and no one would laugh at me. I would bring you to my childhood home,[a] and there you would teach me. I would give you spiced wine to drink, sweet pomegranate wine. His left hand would be under my head and his right hand would embrace me. I adjure you, O women of Jerusalem, not to awaken him until he pleases.”

The Young Women of Jerusalem: “Who is this coming up from the desert, leaning on her beloved?”

King Solomon: “Under the apple tree where your mother gave birth to you in her travail, there I awakened your love.”

The Girl: “Seal me in your heart with permanent betrothal, for love is strong as death, and jealousy is as cruel as Sheol. It flashes fire, the very flame of Jehovah. Many waters cannot quench the flame of love, neither can the floods drown it. If a man tried to buy it with everything he owned, he couldn’t do it.”

The Girl’s Brothers: “We have a little sister too young for breasts. What shall we do if someone asks to marry her?”

King Solomon: “If she has no breasts,[b] we will build upon her a battlement of silver, and if she is a door, we will enclose her with cedar boards.”

The Girl: 10 “I am slim, tall,[c] and full-breasted, and I have found favor in my lover’s eyes. 11 Solomon had a vineyard at Baal-hamon, which he rented out to some farmers there, the rent being one thousand pieces of silver from each. 12 But as for my own vineyard, you, O Solomon, shall have my thousand pieces of silver, and I will give two hundred pieces to those who care for it. 13 O my beloved, living in the gardens, how wonderful that your companions may listen to your voice; let me hear it too. 14 Come quickly, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or young deer upon the mountains of spices.”

The Lovers Speak

“Oh, that you were like a brother to me,
Who nursed at the breasts of my mother.
If I found you out of doors, I would kiss you;
No one would blame me or despise me, either.(A)

“I would lead you and bring you
Into the house of my mother, who used to instruct me;
I would give you spiced wine to drink from the juice of my pomegranates.

“Let his left hand be under my head
And his right hand embrace me.”(B)

(The Bridegroom)

“I command you to take an oath, O daughters of Jerusalem,
That you do not rouse nor awaken my love
Until she pleases.”

(The Chorus)

“Who is this coming up from the wilderness
Leaning upon her beloved?”

(The Shulammite Bride)

“Under the apple tree I awakened you [to my love];
There your mother was in labor with you,
There she was in labor and gave you birth.

“Put me like a seal on your heart,
Like a seal on your arm;
For love is as strong as death,
Jealousy is as severe and cruel as Sheol (the place of the dead).
Its flashes are flashes of fire,
[A most vehement flame] the very flame of the [a]Lord!(C)

“Many waters cannot quench love,
Nor can rivers drown it.
If a man would offer all the riches of his house for love,
It would be utterly scorned and despised.”

(The Chorus)

“We have a little sister
And she has no breasts.
What shall we do for our sister
On the day when she is spoken for [in marriage]?

“If she is a wall (discreet, womanly),
We will build on her a turret (dowry) of silver;
But if she is a door (bold, flirtatious),
We will enclose her with planks of cedar.”

(The Shulammite Bride)

10
“I was a wall, and my breasts were like the towers.
Then I became in the king’s eyes
As one [to be respected and allowed] to find peace.
11
“Solomon had a vineyard at Baal-hamon;
He entrusted the vineyard to caretakers;
Each one was to bring him a thousand shekels of silver for its fruit.
12
“My very own vineyard is at my disposal;
The thousand [shekels of silver] are for you, O Solomon,
And two hundred are for those who tend the fruit.”

(The Bridegroom)

13
“O you who sit in the gardens,
My companions are listening for your voice—
Let me hear it.”

(The Shulammite Bride)

14
“Hurry, my beloved and come quickly,
Like a gazelle or a young stag [taking me home]
On the mountains of spices.”

Footnotes

  1. Song of Solomon 8:6 Heb YHWH (Yahweh).

If you were a baby, like my little brother nursing at his mother’s breasts,
and if I found you outside,
I could kiss you,
and no one would say it was wrong.
I would lead you into my mother’s house,
to the room of she who taught me.
I would give you spiced wine
    squeezed from my pomegranate.

She Speaks to the Women

His left arm is under my head,
and his right hand holds me.

Women of Jerusalem, promise me,
    don’t awaken love,
    don’t arouse love, until I am ready.[a]

The Women of Jerusalem Speak

Who is this woman
coming from the desert, leaning on her lover?

She Speaks to Him

I woke you under the apple tree,
where your mother gave birth to you,
    where you were born.
Keep me near you like a seal you wear over your heart,
like a signet ring you wear on your hand.
Love is as strong as death.
Passion is as strong as the grave.[b]
Its sparks become a flame,
and it grows to become a great fire[c]!
A flood cannot put out love.
    Rivers cannot drown love.
Would people despise a man for giving
    everything he owns for love?

Her Brothers Speak

We have a little sister,
and her breasts are not yet grown.
What should we do for our sister
when a man comes asking to marry her?

If she were a wall,
we would put silver trim[d] around her.
If she were a door,
we would put a cedar board around her.

She Answers Her Brothers

10 I am a wall,
and my breasts are my towers.
And he is satisfied with me![e]

He Speaks

11 Solomon had a vineyard at Baal Hamon.
He put men in charge of the vineyard.
Each man brought in grapes
    worth 1000 shekels[f] of silver.

12 Solomon, you can keep your 1000 shekels.
Give 200 shekels to each man for the grapes he brought.
But I will keep my own vineyard.

He Speaks to Her

13 There you are, sitting in the garden.
Friends are listening to your voice.
    Let me hear it too!

She Speaks to Him

14 Hurry, my lover!
Be like a gazelle or a young deer on the mountains of spice.

Footnotes

  1. Song of Solomon 8:4 until I am ready Literally, “until it desires.”
  2. Song of Solomon 8:6 the grave Or “Sheol,” the place where dead people go.
  3. Song of Solomon 8:6 great fire Or “the flame of the Lord.”
  4. Song of Solomon 8:9 trim Or “supports.” Often horizontal beams and towers were built into walls to strengthen and support them. But here, this seems to be a decoration.
  5. Song of Solomon 8:10 he is satisfied with me Literally, “in his eyes I find peace.” In Hebrew this is also like the names “Solomon” and “Shulamith.”
  6. Song of Solomon 8:11 1000 shekels About 25 pounds (11.5 kg). Also in verse 12.

1-2 I wish you’d been my twin brother,
sharing with me the breasts of my mother,
Playing outside in the street,
kissing in plain view of everyone,
and no one thinking anything of it.
I’d take you by the hand and bring you home
where I was raised by my mother.
You’d drink my wine
    and kiss my cheeks.

3-4 Imagine! His left hand cradling my head,
his right arm around my waist!
Oh, let me warn you, sisters in Jerusalem:
Don’t excite love, don’t stir it up,
until the time is ripe—and you’re ready.

The Chorus

Who is this I see coming up from the country,
arm in arm with her lover?

The Man

I found you under the apricot tree,
and woke you up to love.
Your mother went into labor under that tree,
and under that very tree she bore you.

The Woman

6-8 Hang my locket around your neck,
wear my ring on your finger.
Love is invincible facing danger and death.
Passion laughs at the terrors of hell.
The fire of love stops at nothing—
    it sweeps everything before it.
Flood waters can’t drown love,
torrents of rain can’t put it out.
Love can’t be bought, love can’t be sold—
it’s not to be found in the marketplace.
My brothers used to worry about me:

8-9 “Our little sister has no breasts.
What shall we do with our little sister
when men come asking for her?
She’s a virgin and vulnerable,
    and we’ll protect her.
If they think she’s a wall, we’ll top it with barbed wire.
If they think she’s a door, we’ll barricade it.”

10 Dear brothers, I’m a walled-in virgin still,
    but my breasts are full—
And when my lover sees me,
he knows he’ll soon be satisfied.

The Man

11-12 King Solomon may have vast vineyards
    in lush, fertile country,
Where he hires others to work the ground.
People pay anything to get in on that bounty.
But my vineyard is all mine,
and I’m keeping it to myself.
You can have your vast vineyards, Solomon,
    you and your greedy guests!

13 Oh, lady of the gardens,
my friends are with me listening.
    Let me hear your voice!

The Woman

14 Run to me, dear lover.
    Come like a gazelle.
Leap like a wild stag
    on the spice mountains.
