1 Santiago, siervo de Dios y del Señor Jesucristo,
a las doce tribus que se hallan dispersas por el mundo:
Saludos.
Pruebas y tentaciones
2 Hermanos míos, considérense muy dichosos cuando tengan que enfrentarse con diversas pruebas, 3 pues ya saben que la prueba de su fe produce perseverancia. 4 Y la perseverancia debe llevar a feliz término la obra, para que sean perfectos e íntegros sin que les falte nada. 5 Si a alguno de ustedes le falta sabiduría, pídasela a Dios y él se la dará, pues Dios da a todos generosamente sin menospreciar a nadie. 6 Pero que pida con fe, sin dudar, porque quien duda es como las olas del mar, agitadas y llevadas de un lado a otro por el viento. 7 Quien es así no piense que va a recibir cosa alguna del Señor; 8 es indeciso e inconstante en todo lo que hace.
9 El hermano de condición humilde debe sentirse orgulloso de su alta dignidad; 10 y el rico, de su humilde condición. Porque el rico pasará como la flor del campo. 11 El sol, cuando sale, seca la planta con su calor abrasador. A esta se le cae la flor y pierde su belleza. Así se marchitará también el rico en todas sus empresas.
12 Dichoso el que resiste la tentación porque, al salir aprobado, recibirá la corona de la vida que el Señor ha prometido a quienes lo aman.
13 Que nadie al ser tentado diga: «Es Dios quien me tienta». Porque Dios no puede ser tentado por el mal, ni tampoco tienta él a nadie. 14 Todo lo contrario, cada uno es tentado cuando sus propios malos deseos lo arrastran y seducen. 15 Luego, cuando el deseo ha concebido, engendra el pecado; y el pecado, una vez que ha sido consumado, da a luz la muerte.
16 Mis queridos hermanos, no se engañen. 17 Toda buena dádiva y toda perfecta bendición descienden de lo alto, donde está el Padre que creó las lumbreras celestes, y quien no cambia ni se mueve como las sombras. 18 Por su propia voluntad nos hizo nacer mediante la palabra de verdad, para que fuéramos como los primeros frutos de su creación.
Hay que poner en práctica la palabra
19 Mis queridos hermanos, tengan presente esto: Todos deben estar listos para escuchar, pero no apresurarse para hablar ni para enojarse; 20 pues el enojo de una persona no produce la vida justa que Dios quiere. 21 Por esto, despójense de toda inmoralidad y de la maldad que tanto abunda, para que puedan recibir con humildad la palabra sembrada en ustedes, la cual tiene poder para salvarles.
22 No se contenten solo con oír la palabra, pues así se engañan ustedes mismos. Llévenla a la práctica. 23 El que escucha la palabra, pero no la pone en práctica, es como el que se mira el rostro en un espejo 24 y después de mirarse, se va y se olvida enseguida de cómo es. 25 Pero quien se fija atentamente en la ley perfecta que da libertad y persevera en ella, no olvidando lo que ha oído, sino haciéndolo, recibirá bendición al practicarla.
26 Si alguien se cree religioso, pero no le pone freno a su lengua, se engaña a sí mismo y su religión no sirve para nada. 27 La religión pura y sin mancha delante de Dios nuestro Padre es esta: atender a los huérfanos y a las viudas en sus aflicciones y conservarse limpio de la corrupción del mundo.

1 Santiago, siervo de Dios y del Señor Jesucristo, saluda a las doce tribus de Israel esparcidas por todo el mundo.
Fortaleza en las pruebas
2 Hermanos míos, ustedes deben tenerse por muy dichosos cuando se vean sometidos a pruebas de toda clase. 3 Pues ya saben que cuando su fe es puesta a prueba, ustedes aprenden a soportar con fortaleza el sufrimiento. 4 Pero procuren que esa fortaleza los lleve a la perfección, a la madurez plena, sin que les falte nada.
5 Si a alguno de ustedes le falta sabiduría, pídasela a Dios, y él se la dará; pues Dios da a todos sin limitación y sin hacer reproche alguno. 6 Pero tiene que pedir con fe, sin dudar nada; porque el que duda es como una ola del mar, que el viento lleva de un lado a otro. 7 Quien es así, no crea que va a recibir nada del Señor, 8 porque hoy piensa una cosa y mañana otra, y no es constante en su conducta.
9 El hermano de condición humilde debe sentirse orgulloso de ser enaltecido por Dios; 10 y el rico de ser humillado. Porque el rico es como la flor de la hierba, que no permanece. 11 Cuando el sol sale y calienta con fuerza, la hierba se seca, su flor se cae y su belleza se pierde. Así también, el rico desaparecerá en medio de sus negocios.
12 Dichoso el hombre que soporta la prueba con fortaleza, porque al salir aprobado recibirá como premio la vida, que es la corona que Dios ha prometido a los que lo aman. 13 Cuando alguno se sienta tentado a hacer lo malo, no piense que es tentado por Dios, porque Dios ni siente la tentación de hacer lo malo, ni tienta a nadie para que lo haga. 14 Al contrario, uno es tentado por sus propios malos deseos, que lo atraen y lo seducen. 15 De estos malos deseos nace el pecado; y del pecado, cuando llega a su completo desarrollo, nace la muerte.
16 Queridos hermanos míos, no se engañen: 17 todo lo bueno y perfecto que se nos da, viene de arriba, de Dios, que creó los astros del cielo. Dios es siempre el mismo: en él no hay variaciones ni oscurecimientos. 18 Él, porque así lo quiso, nos dio vida mediante el mensaje de la verdad, para que seamos los primeros frutos de su creación.
Necesidad de poner en práctica el mensaje
19 Recuerden esto, queridos hermanos: todos ustedes deben estar listos para escuchar; en cambio deben ser lentos para hablar y para enojarse. 20 Porque el hombre enojado no hace lo que es justo ante Dios. 21 Así pues, despójense ustedes de toda impureza y de la maldad que tanto abunda, y acepten humildemente el mensaje que ha sido sembrado; pues ese mensaje tiene poder para salvarlos.
22 Pero no basta con oír el mensaje; hay que ponerlo en práctica, pues de lo contrario se estarían engañando ustedes mismos. 23 El que solamente oye el mensaje, y no lo practica, es como el hombre que se mira la cara en un espejo: 24 se ve a sí mismo, pero en cuanto da la vuelta se olvida de cómo es. 25 Pero el que no olvida lo que oye, sino que se fija atentamente en la ley perfecta de la libertad, y permanece firme cumpliendo lo que ella manda, será feliz en lo que hace.
26 Si alguno cree ser religioso, pero no sabe poner freno a su lengua, se engaña a sí mismo y su religión no sirve de nada. 27 La religión pura y sin mancha delante de Dios el Padre es ésta: ayudar a los huérfanos y a las viudas en sus aflicciones, y no mancharse con la maldad del mundo.

1 I am James. I am a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. I send greetings to all of God's people wherever they live.
2 My brothers, be very happy when you are tested by having troubles of many kinds.
3 You know this, that when you prove you believe, you become stronger to take troubles.
4 But you must keep on being strong to take trouble. Then you will be all right in every way. You will not need anything more.
5 If any of you need to be wise, ask God to make you wise. He gives plenty of wisdom to all people. He is not angry because you ask him. He will make you wise.
6 But when you ask, you must believe that God will do it. You must not doubt and think, `Perhaps God will not do it.' A person who doubts is like a wave on the sea. The wind drives it this way and that way.
7 That person must not think that he will get anything from the Lord.
8 A person like that has two minds. He cannot go straight in any of his ways.
9 A Christian brother who is poor should be glad: he is in a high place now he is a Christian.
10 A Christian brother who is rich should be glad: he is in a low place now he is a Christian. A rich man will pass away like a flower on the grass.
11 The sun shines and is very hot. Then the grass dries and its flower falls off. It was nice at first, but now it is not nice any more. In the same way, the rich man will die while he is going around trying to make money.
12 God will bless any man who is strong to take his trouble, when he is being tested. When he has proved he is strong, he will live for ever. That is what the Lord has promised to those who love him.
13 No one who wants to do something wrong should say, `God is trying to make me do this wrong thing.' God cannot do anything wrong.
14 It is their own heart which is wrong. That is why he wants to do something wrong. It fools him.
15 Then the wrong in his heart makes him do the wrong thing. And the wrong thing he has done leads to death.
16 My dear brothers, do not fool yourselves.
17 Every good thing and every fine gift comes from heaven. It comes from the Father of all light. He does not change and he makes no shadow by turning.
18 He made us his children because he wanted us. He made us his children by giving us his true word. He made us his children so that we would be the first and best of all he made.
19 My dear brothers, do not forget this. Every man should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to be angry.
20 When a man is angry, he does not do what God says is right.
21 So stop all your dirty living. Stop doing so many wrong things. Listen quietly to the word that has been put in your hearts. It is able to save you.
22 But obey God's word. Do not just listen to it. If you just listen to it, you fool yourselves.
23 Anyone who just listens to the word, and does not obey it, is like a man who looks at his face in a looking glass.
24 He looks at himself and goes away, and right away he forgets what he looked like.
25 But there is a law that is all right. It sets people free from their old ways. Anyone who looks into that law and remembers it, is happy because he obeys the law. He does not just listen to the law and forget it, but he obeys what the law says.
26 Some of you think that you are doing what God wants. But you are not careful what you say. If you are like that, you are fooling yourself. And you are not doing what God wants.
27 This is what God the Father wants. It is clean and right. Go and help those who have no father and mother. Go and help widow women whose husbands are dead. These people have troubles. And keep yourself clean from the wrong things in the world.

Trials and Temptations
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds,(F) 3 because you know that the testing of your faith(G) produces perseverance.(H) 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature(I) and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,(J) who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.(K) 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt,(L) because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded(M) and unstable(N) in all they do.
9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position.(O) 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.(P) 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat(Q) and withers(R) the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed.(S) In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial(T) because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life(U) that the Lord has promised to those who love him.(V)
13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own(W) evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;(X) and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.(Y)
16 Don’t be deceived,(Z) my dear brothers and sisters.(AA) 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above,(AB) coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,(AC) who does not change(AD) like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth(AE) through the word of truth,(AF) that we might be a kind of firstfruits(AG) of all he created.
Listening and Doing
19 My dear brothers and sisters,(AH) take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak(AI) and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger(AJ) does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of(AK) all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you,(AL) which can save you.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.(AM) 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom,(AN) and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.(AO)
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues(AP) deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after(AQ) orphans and widows(AR) in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.(AS)
