Lời Mở Ðầu
1 Lời của Chúa đến với Sô-phô-ni con của Cư-si, con của Ghê-đa-li-a, con của A-ma-ri-a, con của Ê-xê-chia, trong thời Giô-si-a con trai A-môn vua Giu-đa.
Sự Ðoán Phạt Sẽ Ðến với Giu-đa
2 “Ta sẽ quét sạch mọi sự trên mặt đất,” Chúa phán.
3 “Ta sẽ quét sạch người ta và thú vật;
Ta sẽ quét sạch chim trời và cá biển.
Những kẻ gian ác sẽ ngã gục,
Ta sẽ diệt trừ loài người khỏi mặt đất,” Chúa phán.
4 “Ta sẽ đưa tay ra chống lại Giu-đa, và nghịch lại mọi kẻ sống ở Giê-ru-sa-lem.
Ta sẽ diệt trừ khỏi chốn nầy những kẻ thờ lạy Ba-anh còn sót lại.
Ta sẽ diệt trừ các tư tế thờ lạy hình tượng, để tên tuổi chúng không còn nữa.
5 Ta sẽ diệt trừ những kẻ lên sân thượng sụp lạy và thờ phượng các thần linh trên không trung,
Và những kẻ sấp mình xuống nhân danh Chúa mà thề, rồi lại nhân danh Minh-côm mà thề,
6 Cùng những kẻ xây lưng chối bỏ Chúa, không tìm kiếm Chúa, và không cầu vấn Ngài.”
7 Hãy im lặng trước mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu!
Vì ngày của Chúa đến gần.
Chúa đã chuẩn bị một cuộc hiến tế.
Ngài đã biệt riêng ra thánh những người khách của Ngài.
8 “Trong ngày hiến tế của Chúa,
Ta sẽ phạt các thủ lãnh, các hoàng tử, và tất cả những kẻ mặc y phục ngoại bang.
9 Trong ngày ấy Ta sẽ phạt tất cả những kẻ nhảy qua ngạch cửa để thờ lạy hình tượng,
Những kẻ chất đầy nhà chủ chúng những của cải chiếm được nhờ bạo lực và dối gian.
10 Trong ngày ấy,” Chúa phán,
“Người ta sẽ nghe tiếng khóc to ở Cổng Cá,
Tiếng rên rỉ thở than ở Quận Nhì,
Và một tiếng đổ ầm từ miền đồi núi.
11 Dân cư ở trung tâm thương mại sẽ than khóc,
Vì tất cả các thương gia bị diệt mất.
Tất cả nhân viên ngân hàng[a] đều bị giết.
12 Khi ấy Ta sẽ dùng lồng đèn để lục soát Giê-ru-sa-lem;
Ta sẽ phạt những kẻ tự mãn, những kẻ thản nhiên trước sự băng hoại xã hội,[b]
Những kẻ nói trong lòng, ‘Chúa sẽ không ban phước hoặc giáng họa cho ai.’
13 Vì thế các tài sản của chúng sẽ bị cướp đi, nhà cửa của chúng sẽ ra hoang phế;
Chúng xây nhà nhưng sẽ không được ở trong đó;
Chúng trồng vườn nho nhưng sẽ không được uống rượu của vườn nho.”
Ngày Lớn của CHÚA
14 Ngày lớn của Chúa đã gần,
Gần lắm rồi và ngày ấy đến nhanh chóng.
Những tiếng kêu gào trong ngày của Chúa thật thê thảm,
Những chiến sĩ dũng mãnh cũng phải khóc to trong ngày ấy.
15 Ngày ấy là ngày của thịnh nộ,
Ngày của khốn quẫn và bi thương,
Ngày của hủy diệt và điêu tàn,
Ngày của tối tăm và mù mịt,
Ngày của âm u và đen tối.
16 Ngày của tiếng kèn trận và tiếng hò hét xung phong vào các thành kiên cố, và vào những tháp cao ở các góc thành.
17 “Ta sẽ đem cảnh khốn quẫn đến cho dân trong thành,
Chúng sẽ bước đi như những người mù,
Vì chúng đã phạm tội chống lại Chúa,
Máu của chúng sẽ đổ ra như bụi,
Thân thể chúng sẽ rữa nát như phân.”
18 Bạc hoặc vàng của chúng đều không thể cứu chúng trong ngày thịnh nộ của Chúa.
Trong lửa giận của Ngài, cả xứ sẽ bị thiêu rụi;
Thật vậy Ngài sẽ tuyệt diệt đồng loạt cách khủng khiếp mọi kẻ sống trong xứ.

1 The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, during the reign of Josiah(A) son of Amon(B) king of Judah:
Judgment on the Whole Earth in the Day of the Lord
2 “I will sweep away everything
from the face of the earth,”(C)
declares the Lord.
3 “I will sweep away both man and beast;(D)
I will sweep away the birds in the sky(E)
and the fish in the sea—
and the idols that cause the wicked to stumble.”[a]
“When I destroy all mankind
on the face of the earth,”(F)
declares the Lord,(G)
4 “I will stretch out my hand(H) against Judah
and against all who live in Jerusalem.
I will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place,(I)
the very names of the idolatrous priests(J)—
5 those who bow down on the roofs
to worship the starry host,(K)
those who bow down and swear by the Lord
and who also swear by Molek,[b](L)
6 those who turn back from following(M) the Lord
and neither seek(N) the Lord nor inquire(O) of him.”
7 Be silent(P) before the Sovereign Lord,
for the day of the Lord(Q) is near.
The Lord has prepared a sacrifice;(R)
he has consecrated those he has invited.
8 “On the day of the Lord’s sacrifice
I will punish(S) the officials
and the king’s sons(T)
and all those clad
in foreign clothes.
9 On that day I will punish
all who avoid stepping on the threshold,[c](U)
who fill the temple of their gods
with violence and deceit.(V)
10 “On that day,(W)”
declares the Lord,
“a cry will go up from the Fish Gate,(X)
wailing(Y) from the New Quarter,
and a loud crash from the hills.
11 Wail,(Z) you who live in the market district[d];
all your merchants will be wiped out,
all who trade with[e] silver will be destroyed.(AA)
12 At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps
and punish those who are complacent,(AB)
who are like wine left on its dregs,(AC)
who think, ‘The Lord will do nothing,(AD)
either good or bad.’(AE)
13 Their wealth will be plundered,(AF)
their houses demolished.
Though they build houses,
they will not live in them;
though they plant vineyards,
they will not drink the wine.”(AG)
14 The great day of the Lord(AH) is near(AI)—
near and coming quickly.
The cry on the day of the Lord is bitter;
the Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.
15 That day will be a day of wrath—
a day of distress and anguish,
a day of trouble and ruin,
a day of darkness(AJ) and gloom,
a day of clouds and blackness(AK)—
16 a day of trumpet and battle cry(AL)
against the fortified cities
and against the corner towers.(AM)
17 “I will bring such distress(AN) on all people
that they will grope about like those who are blind,(AO)
because they have sinned against the Lord.
Their blood will be poured out(AP) like dust
and their entrails like dung.(AQ)
18 Neither their silver nor their gold
will be able to save them
on the day of the Lord’s wrath.”(AR)

Yahweh Will End All Things
1 The word of [a]Yahweh which came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah, in the days of (A)Josiah son of (B)Amon, king of Judah:
2 “I will completely (C)end all things
From the face of the ground,” declares Yahweh.
3 “I will end (D)man and beast;
I will end the (E)birds of the sky
And the fish of the sea
And the [b](F)ruins along with the wicked;
And I will cut off man from the face of the ground,” declares Yahweh.
4 “So I will (G)stretch out My hand against Judah
And against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
And I will (H)cut off the remnant of Baal from this place,
And the names of the (I)idolatrous priests along with the priests,
5 And those who worship on the (J)housetops the host of heaven,
And those who worship and (K)swear to Yahweh and yet swear by [c](L)Milcom,
6 And those who have (M)turned back from following Yahweh,
And those who have (N)not sought Yahweh or inquired of Him.”
The Day of Yahweh Is Near
7 [d](O)Be silent before Lord Yahweh!
For the (P)day of Yahweh is near,
For Yahweh has prepared a (Q)sacrifice;
He has (R)set apart His guests.
8 “Then it will be on the day of Yahweh’s sacrifice
That I will (S)punish the princes, the king’s sons,
And all who clothe themselves with (T)foreign garments.
9 And I will punish on that day all who leap on the temple threshold,
Who fill the house of their [e]Lord with (U)violence and deceit.
10 And it will be in that day,” declares Yahweh,
“That there will be the sound of a cry from the (V)Fish Gate
And a wail from the [f](W)Second Quarter
And a great destruction from the (X)hills.
11 Wail, O inhabitants of the [g]Mortar,
For all the [h]people of (Y)Canaan will be silenced;
All who weigh out (Z)silver will be cut off.
12 And it will be at that time
That I will (AA)search Jerusalem with lamps,
And I will punish the men
Who are [i](AB)stagnant in spirit,
Who say in their hearts,
‘Yahweh will (AC)not do good or evil!’
13 And it will be that their wealth will become (AD)spoil
And their houses desolate;
Indeed, (AE)they will build houses but not inhabit them,
And plant vineyards but not drink their wine.”
14 Near is the (AF)great (AG)day of Yahweh,
Near and coming very quickly;
O the sound, the day of Yahweh!
[j]In it the mighty man (AH)cries out bitterly.
15 A day of fury is that day,
A day of (AI)trouble and distress,
A day of destruction and desolation,
A day of (AJ)darkness and thick darkness,
A day of clouds and dense gloom,
16 A day of (AK)trumpet and loud shouting
Against the (AL)fortified cities
And the high corner towers.
17 I will bring (AM)distress on men
So that they will walk (AN)like the blind
Because they have sinned against Yahweh;
And their (AO)blood will be poured out like dust
And their (AP)flesh like dung.
18 Neither their (AQ)silver nor their gold
Will be able to deliver them
On the day of the fury of Yahweh;
And (AR)all the earth will be devoured
In the fire of His jealousy,
For He will (AS)make a complete destruction,
Indeed a terrifying one,
Of all the inhabitants of the earth.
