Elimelek flyttar till Moabs land
1 På den tid då domarna regerade blev det hungersnöd i landet. Då begav sig en man från Betlehem i Juda i väg med sin hustru och sina båda söner för att bo en tid i Moabs land. 2 Mannen hette Elimelek, hans hustru Noomi och hans båda söner Mahlon och Kiljon, efratiter från Betlehem i Juda. De kom till Moabs land och stannade där. 3 Och Elimelek, Noomis man, dog, och hon blev ensam kvar med sina båda söner. 4 Sönerna tog sig moabitiska hustrur. Den ena hette Orpa och den andra Rut. 5 När de hade bott där ungefär tio år, dog också de båda sönerna, Mahlon och Kiljon, och kvinnan blev ensam kvar, utan söner och utan man.
Noomi och Rut återvänder till Betlehem
6 Noomi bröt upp med sina sonhustrur för att vända tillbaka från Moabs land. Ty medan hon var i Moabs land, hade hon hört att Herren hade tagit sig an sitt folk och givit dem bröd. 7 Hon lämnade tillsammans med sina båda sonhustrur den plats där hon hade bott. Men när de var på väg mot Juda land, 8 sade Noomi till sina båda sonhustrur: "Vänd om och gå hem igen, var och en till sin moders hus. 9 Må Herren visa godhet mot er, så som ni har gjort mot de båda döda och mot mig. Må Herren låta er finna trygghet, var och en i sin mans hus." Och hon kysste dem. Men de brast ut i gråt, 10 och sade till henne: "Nej, vi vill följa med dig tillbaka till ditt folk."
11 Men Noomi svarade dem: "Vänd tillbaka, mina döttrar. Varför skulle ni gå med mig? Har jag några fler söner i mitt moderliv som kan bli män åt er? 12 Vänd tillbaka, mina döttrar, och gå hem. Jag är för gammal att bli gift. Och även om jag skulle tänka att jag ännu har hopp, ja, om jag så redan i natt gav mig åt en man och rent av födde söner, 13 skulle ni då vänta på dem tills de blev vuxna? Skulle ni stänga er inne utan man? Nej, mina döttrar! Det är mycket bittrare för mig än för er, eftersom Herrens hand har drabbat mig." 14 Då brast de på nytt ut i gråt. Orpa kysste sin svärmor farväl, men Rut klamrade sig fast vid henne. 15 Noomi sade då: "Se, din svägerska har vänt tillbaka till sitt folk och till sina gudar. Vänd också du tillbaka och följ din svägerska."
16 Men Rut svarade: "Tvinga mig inte att lämna dig och vända tillbaka från dig. Ty dit du går vill också jag gå, och där du stannar vill också jag stanna. Ditt folk är mitt folk och din Gud är min Gud. 17 Där du dör vill också jag dö, och där vill jag bli begravd. Herren må straffa mig både nu och senare om något annat än döden skulle skilja mig från dig." 18 När hon såg att Rut var fast besluten att gå med henne, talade hon inte mer med henne om det.
19 Så gick de båda till dess att de kom till Betlehem. När de kom fram till Betlehem, kom hela staden i rörelse för deras skull, och kvinnorna sade: "Är det inte Noomi?" 20 Men hon sade till dem: "Kalla mig inte Noomi, utan kalla mig Mara,[a] för den Allsmäktige har gjort livet mycket bittert för mig.
21 Rik drog jag härifrån, och tomhänt har Herren låtit mig komma tillbaka. Varför kallar ni mig då Noomi? Herren har vittnat mot mig, den Allsmäktige har låtit det gå illa för mig."
22 Noomi återvände tillsammans med sin moabitiska sonhustru Rut, som hade följt med från Moabs land. Och de kom till Betlehem när kornskörden började.

1 Al tempo in cui governavano i giudici, ci fu nel paese una carestia, e un uomo di Betlemme di Giuda andò ad abitare nel paese di Moab con la moglie e i suoi due figli.
2 Il nome dell'uomo era Elimelek, il nome di sua moglie Naomi e il nome dei suoi due figli Mahlon e Kilion, Efratei da Betlemme di Giuda. Essi andarono nel paese di Moab e vi si stabilirono.
3 Poi Elimelek, marito di Naomi, morì ed essa rimase con i suoi due figli.
4 Essi sposarono delle donne moabite, di cui una si chiamava Orpah e l'altra Ruth; e là dimorarono circa dieci anni.
5 Poi anche Mahlon e Kilion morirono entrambi, e così la donna rimase priva dei suoi due figli e del marito.
6 Allora si levò con le sue nuore per tornare dal paese di Moab, perché nel paese di Moab aveva sentito dire che l'Eterno aveva visitato il suo popolo dandogli del pane.
7 Ella partì dunque con le sue due nuore dal luogo dove si trovava, e si mise in cammino per tornare nel paese di Giuda.
8 Ma Naomi disse alle sue due nuore: «Andate, tornate ciascuna a casa di sua madre; l'Eterno sia buono con voi, come voi siete state con quelli che sono morti e con me!
9 L'Eterno dia a ciascuna di voi di trovare riposo in casa del proprio marito!». Poi ella le baciò, ed esse piansero ad alta voce,
10 e le dissero: «No, noi torneremo con te al tuo popolo».
11 Ma Naomi rispose: «Tornate indietro, figlie mie! Perché verreste con me? Ho forse ancora dei figli in grembo che possano diventare vostri mariti?
12 Tornate indietro, figlie mie, andate, perché sono troppo vecchia per rimaritarmi; e anche se dicessi: "Ho ancora speranza"; anche se andassi a marito stasera e partorissi dei figli.
13 aspettereste voi finche fossero grandi? Vi asterreste voi per questo dal maritarvi? No, figlie mie, perché la mia condizione è più amara della vostra, poiché la mano dell'Eterno si è stesa contro di me».
14 Allora esse alzarono la voce e piansero di nuovo; poi Orpah baciò la suocera, ma Ruth rimase stretta a lei.
15 Allora Naomi disse a Ruth: «Ecco, tua cognata è tornata al suo popolo e ai suoi dei; torna indietro anche tu, come tua cognata!».
16 Ma Ruth rispose: «Non insistere con me perché ti abbandoni e lasci di seguirti, perché dove andrai tu andrò anch'io, e dove starai tu io pure starò, il tuo popolo sarà il mio popolo, e il tuo DIO sarà il mio DIO;
17 dove morirai tu morirò anch'io, e là sarò sepolta. Così mi faccia l'Eterno e anche peggio, se altra cosa che la morte mi separerà da te!».
18 Quando Naomi si rese conto che Ruth era decisa a seguirla, smise di parlare con lei.
19 Così fecero il viaggio assieme fino a che giunsero a Betlemme. Quando giunsero a Betlemme, tutta la città fu in agitazione per loro. Le donne dicevano: «E' questa Naomi?».
20 Ella rispose loro: «Non chiamatemi Naomi; chiamatemi Mara, poiché l'Onnipotente mi ha riempita di amarezza.
21 Io partii nell'abbondanza e l'Eterno mi ha riportato a casa spoglia di tutto. Perché chiamarmi Naomi, quando l'Eterno ha testimoniato contro di me e l'Onnipotente mi ha resa infelice?».
22 Così Naomi tornò con Ruth, la Moabita, sua nuora, venuta dal paese di Moab. Esse arrivarono a Betlemme quando si cominciava a mietere l'orzo.

1 1-2 No tempo em que os juízes governavam o povo de Israel, houve um homem efrateu de Belém de Judá chamado Elimeleque que deixou a sua terra, pois havia muita fome e emigrou para Moabe. Acompanharam-no a mulher, Noemi, e os dois filhos do casal, Malom e Quiliom.
3 Elimeleque faleceu naquela terra e Noemi ficou sozinha com os dois rapazes. 4 Entretanto, estes casaram com duas raparigas de Moabe, Orfa e Rute. Depois de ali terem vivido cerca de 10 anos, 5 tanto Malom como Quiliom morreram e Noemi viu-se de novo desamparada, sem marido e sem filhos.
Noemi regressa a Belém com Rute
6 Por isso, decidiu regressar a Israel na companhia das noras, pois tinha ouvido que o Senhor abençoara o seu povo, dando-lhe novamente boas colheitas. 7 Na companhia das duas noras, deixou o lugar onde tinham estado a viver e tomaram o caminho que as conduziria de volta a Judá.
8 Já a caminho resolveu dizer às noras: “Não preferem antes voltar para as vossas famílias em vez de me acompanharem? Se o fizerem, que o Senhor vos recompense pela vossa bondade com que trataram os vossos falecidos maridos e a mim mesma. 9 Que ele vos abençoe, preparando-vos outro casamento feliz!” E abraçou-as e beijou-as e todas choraram de emoção.
10 “Não”, diziam as moças. “Nós vamos viver contigo junto do teu povo.”
11 Porém, Noemi insistiu: “Fariam melhor em voltar para o vosso povo. Sabem bem que já não há hipótese de eu vir a ter filhos que crescessem e casassem convosco. 12 Não, minhas filhas, voltem para as vossas casas, porque já não tenho idade para tornar a casar. E mesmo que isso acontecesse e que esta mesma noite eu concebesse e viesse a ter filhos, 13 iriam esperar tanto tempo até que eles fossem crescidos? Não, com certeza que não. Oh! Como eu lamento que o Senhor me tenha castigado assim! A minha amargura é maior do que a vossa!”
14 E estiveram a chorar algum tempo até que Orfa, abraçando-se à sogra, decidiu dizer-lhes adeus e regressar à casa paterna. No entanto, Rute foi inflexível e quis ficar com Noemi. 15 “Vê”, disse-lhe Noemi, “a tua cunhada já se foi embora para junto da sua família e dos seus deuses. Faz tu também o mesmo.”
16 Mas Rute respondeu-lhe: “Não me forces a deixar-te. Porque eu irei para onde tu fores; onde passares a viver, aí eu também viverei; o teu povo é o meu e o teu Deus é o meu Deus. 17 Quero vir a morrer onde tu morreres e ficar aí sepultada. Que o Senhor me castigue e faça aquilo que quiser se houver alguma coisa, a não ser a morte, que nos separe.” 18 Quando Noemi viu que Rute tinha tomado uma decisão firme e que nada a podia demover, não insistiu mais.
19 Então ambas vieram para Belém. A povoação inteira comoveu-se à sua chegada. “Mas é mesmo Noemi?”, perguntavam as mulheres.
20 Ela respondia: “Não me chamem mais Noemi (agradável), mas sim Mara (amargurada), porque o Todo-Poderoso me tem afligido muito. 21 Parti cheia e regresso vazia. Porque haveriam de chamar-me Noemi, quando o Senhor parece ter-se desviado de mim e me trouxe tamanha calamidade?”
22 O regresso delas a Belém, vindas de Moabe, deu-se no princípio da colheita da cevada.

Naomi Loses Her Husband and Sons
1 In the days when the judges ruled,[a](A) there was a famine in the land.(B) So a man from Bethlehem in Judah,(C) together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while(D) in the country of Moab.(E) 2 The man’s name was Elimelek,(F) his wife’s name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion.(G) They were Ephrathites(H) from Bethlehem,(I) Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.
3 Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 They married Moabite women,(J) one named Orpah and the other Ruth.(K) After they had lived there about ten years, 5 both Mahlon and Kilion(L) also died,(M) and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.
Naomi and Ruth Return to Bethlehem
6 When Naomi heard in Moab(N) that the Lord had come to the aid of his people(O) by providing food(P) for them, she and her daughters-in-law(Q) prepared to return home from there. 7 With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah.
8 Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you, to your mother’s home.(R) May the Lord show you kindness,(S) as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands(T) and to me. 9 May the Lord grant that each of you will find rest(U) in the home of another husband.”
Then she kissed(V) them goodbye and they wept aloud(W) 10 and said to her, “We will go back with you to your people.”
11 But Naomi said, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands?(X) 12 Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me—even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons— 13 would you wait until they grew up?(Y) Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter(Z) for me than for you, because the Lord’s hand has turned against me!(AA)”
14 At this they wept(AB) aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law(AC) goodbye,(AD) but Ruth clung to her.(AE)
15 “Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law(AF) is going back to her people and her gods.(AG) Go back with her.”
16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you(AH) or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go,(AI) and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people(AJ) and your God my God.(AK) 17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely,(AL) if even death separates you and me.”(AM) 18 When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.(AN)
19 So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem.(AO) When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred(AP) because of them, and the women exclaimed, “Can this be Naomi?”
20 “Don’t call me Naomi,[b]” she told them. “Call me Mara,[c] because the Almighty[d](AQ) has made my life very bitter.(AR) 21 I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty.(AS) Why call me Naomi? The Lord has afflicted[e] me;(AT) the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.”
22 So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabite,(AU) her daughter-in-law,(AV) arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest(AW) was beginning.(AX)
