1 Y ACONTECIO en los días que gobernaban los jueces, que hubo hambre en la tierra. Y un varón de Beth-lehem de Judá, fué á peregrinar en los campos de Moab, él y su mujer, y dos hijos suyos.
2 El nombre de aquel varón era Elimelech, y el de su mujer Noemi; y los nombres de sus dos hijos eran, Mahalón y Chelión, Ephrateos de Beth-lehem de Judá. Llegaron pues á los campos de Moab, y asentaron allí.
3 Y murió Elimelech, marido de Noemi, y quedó ella con sus dos hijos;
4 Los cuales tomaron para sí mujeres de Moab, el nombre de la una Orpha, y el nombre de la otra Ruth; y habitaron allí unos diez años.
5 Y murieron también los dos, Mahalón y Chelión, quedando así la mujer desamparada de sus dos hijos y de su marido.
6 Entonces se levantó con sus nueras, y volvióse de los campos de Moab: porque oyó en el campo de Moab que Jehová había visitado á su pueblo para darles pan.
7 Salió pues del lugar donde había estado, y con ella sus dos nueras, y comenzaron á caminar para volverse á la tierra de Judá.
8 Y Noemi dijo á sus dos nueras: Andad, volveos cada una á la casa de su madre: Jehová haga con vosotras misericordia, como la habéis hecho con los muertos y conmigo.
9 Déos Jehová que halléis descanso, cada una en casa de su marido: besólas luego, y ellas lloraron á voz en grito.
10 Y dijéronle: Ciertamente nosotras volveremos contigo á tu pueblo.
11 Y Noemi respondió: Volveos, hijas mías: ¿para qué habéis de ir conmigo? ¿tengo yo más hijos en el vientre, que puedan ser vuestros maridos?
12 Volveos, hijas mías, é idos; que yo ya soy vieja para ser para varón. Y aunque dijese: Esperanza tengo; y esta noche fuese con varón, y aun pariese hijos;
13 ¿Habíais vosotras de esperarlos hasta que fuesen grandes? ¿habías vosotras de quedaros sin casar por amor de ellos? No, hijas mías; que mayor amargura tengo yo que vosotras, pues la mano de Jehová ha salido contra mí.
14 Mas ellas alzando otra vez su voz, lloraron: y Orpha besó á su suegra, mas Ruth se quedó con ella.
15 Y Noemi dijo: He aquí tu cuñada se ha vuelto á su pueblo y á sus dioses; vuélvete tú tras ella.
16 Y Ruth respondió: No me ruegues que te deje, y que me aparte de ti: porque donde quiera que tú fueres, iré yo; y donde quiera que vivieres, viviré. Tu pueblo será mi pueblo, y tu Dios mi Dios.
17 Donde tú murieres, moriré yo, y allí seré sepultada: así me haga Jehová, y así me dé, que sólo la muerte hará separación entre mí y ti.
18 Y viendo Noemi que estaba tan resuelta á ir con ella, dejó de hablarle.
19 Anduvieron pues ellas dos hasta que llegaron á Beth-lehem: y aconteció que entrando en Beth-lehem, toda la ciudad se conmovió por razón de ellas, y decían: ¿No es ésta Noemi?
20 Y ella les respondiá: No me llaméis Noemi, sino llamadme Mara: porque en grande amargura me ha puesto el Todopoderoso.
21 Yo me fuí llena, mas vacía me ha vuelto Jehová. ¿Por qué me llamaréis Noemi, ya que Jehová ha dado testimonio contra mí, y el Todopoderoso me ha afligido?
22 Así volvió Noemi y Ruth Moabita su nuera con ella; volvió de los campos de Moab, y llegaron á Beth-lehem en el principio de la siega de las cebadas.

Y un varón de Belén de Judá fue a morar en los campos de Moab, él y su mujer, y dos hijos suyos. 2 El nombre de aquel varón era Elimelec, y el de su mujer, Noemí; y los nombres de sus hijos eran Mahlón y Quelión, efrateos de Belén de Judá. Llegaron, pues, a los campos de Moab, y se quedaron allí.
3 Y murió Elimelec, marido de Noemí, y quedó ella con sus dos hijos, 4 los cuales tomaron para sí mujeres moabitas; el nombre de una era Orfa, y el nombre de la otra, Rut; y habitaron allí unos diez años. 5 Y murieron también los dos, Mahlón y Quelión, quedando así la mujer desamparada de sus dos hijos y de su marido.
6 Entonces se levantó con sus nueras, y regresó de los campos de Moab; porque oyó en el campo de Moab que Jehová había visitado a su pueblo para darles pan. 7 Salió, pues, del lugar donde había estado, y con ella sus dos nueras, y comenzaron a caminar para volverse a la tierra de Judá. 8 Y Noemí dijo a sus dos nueras: Andad, volveos cada una a la casa de su madre; Jehová haga con vosotras misericordia, como la habéis hecho con los muertos y conmigo. 9 Os conceda Jehová que halléis descanso, cada una en casa de su marido. Luego las besó, y ellas alzaron su voz y lloraron, 10 y le dijeron: Ciertamente nosotras iremos contigo a tu pueblo.
11 Y Noemí respondió: Volveos, hijas mías; ¿para qué habéis de ir conmigo? ¿Tengo yo más hijos en el vientre, que puedan ser vuestros maridos? 12 Volveos, hijas mías, e idos; porque yo ya soy vieja para tener marido. Y aunque dijese: Esperanza tengo, y esta noche estuviese con marido, y aun diese a luz hijos, 13 ¿habíais vosotras de esperarlos hasta que fuesen grandes? ¿Habíais de quedaros sin casar por amor a ellos? No, hijas mías; que mayor amargura tengo yo que vosotras, pues la mano de Jehová ha salido contra mí.
14 Y ellas alzaron otra vez su voz y lloraron; y Orfa besó a su suegra, mas Rut se quedó con ella. 15 Y Noemí dijo: He aquí tu cuñada se ha vuelto a su pueblo y a sus dioses; vuélvete tú tras ella.
16 Respondió Rut: No me ruegues que te deje, y me aparte de ti; porque a dondequiera que tú fueres, iré yo, y dondequiera que vivieres, viviré. Tu pueblo será mi pueblo, y tu Dios mi Dios. 17 Donde tú murieres, moriré yo, y allí seré sepultada; así me haga Jehová, y aun me añada, que solo la muerte hará separación entre nosotras dos. 18 Y viendo Noemí que estaba tan resuelta a ir con ella, no dijo más.
19 Anduvieron, pues, ellas dos hasta que llegaron a Belén; y aconteció que habiendo entrado en Belén, toda la ciudad se conmovió por causa de ellas, y decían: ¿No es esta Noemí? 20 Y ella les respondía: No me llaméis Noemí,[a] sino llamadme Mara;[b] porque en grande amargura me ha puesto el Todopoderoso. 21 Yo me fui llena, pero Jehová me ha vuelto con las manos vacías. ¿Por qué me llamaréis Noemí, ya que Jehová ha dado testimonio contra mí, y el Todopoderoso me ha afligido?
22 Así volvió Noemí, y Rut la moabita su nuera con ella; volvió de los campos de Moab, y llegaron a Belén al comienzo de la siega de la cebada.

1 Now it came to pass in the yamim when HaShofetim (the Judges) ruled, that there was a ra’av (famine) in the land. And a certain ish (man) of Beit-Lechem Yehudah went to sojourn in the sadei Moav, he, and his isha (wife), and his two banim (sons).
2 And the shem (name) of the ish (man) was Elimelech, and the shem (name) of his isha (wife) Naomi, and the shem of his two banim Machlon and Kilyon, Ephrathites of Beit-Lechem Yehudah. And they came into the sadei Moav, and continued there.
3 And Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left (alive) and her two banim.
4 And they took them wives of the nashim (women) of Moav; the shem (name) of the one was Orpah, and the shem (name) of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about eser shanim (ten years).
5 And Machlon and Kilyon died also both of them; and the isha was left (alive), surviving with neither her yeladim nor her ish.
6 Then she arose with her kallot, that she might make teshuvah (return) from the sadei Moav: for in the sadeh of Moav she had heard how that Hashem had visited His people in giving them lechem (bread).
7 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two kallot with her; and they set on the derech (way, road) to make teshuvah (return) unto Eretz Yehudah.
8 And Naomi said unto her two kallot, Go, go back each to her beis em (mother’s house): may Hashem show chesed (lovingkindness) to you, as ye have dealt with hamesim (the dead ones), and with me.
9 Hashem grant you that ye may find menuchah (resting place), each of you in the bais of her ish. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
10 And they said unto her, Surely we will make teshuvah (return) with thee unto thy people.
11 And Naomi said, Turn back, my banot; why will ye go with me? Are there yet any more banim in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
12 Turn back, my banot, go your way; for I am too old to have an ish. If I should say, I have tikvah, if I should have an ish halailah (tonight), and should also bear banim,
13 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? Would ye stay from having ba’alim (husbands) for them? Nay, my banot; for it is more mar (bitter) for me than you, for the Yad Hashem has gone out against me.
14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again; and Orpah kissed [cf Mt 26:49] her chamot; but Ruth clung unto her.
15 And she said, Hinei, thy sister-in-law is gone back unto her people, and unto her g-ds; return thou after thy sister-inlaw.
16 And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee; for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy G-d shall be Elohai;
17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried. Hashem do so to me, and more also, if anything but HaMavet part thee and me.
18 When she saw that she was steadfastly minded to go with her, then she left urging her.
19 So they two went until they came to Beit-Lechem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beit-Lechem, that kol ha’ir (all the town) was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi?
20 And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi [Pleasant], call me Mara [Bitter]; for Shaddai hath dealt very bitterly with me.
21 I went away full and Hashem hath brought me back empty; why then call me Naomi, seeing Hashem hath testified against me, and Shaddai hath made me very bitter?
22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her kallah, with her, which returned out of the sadei Moav; and they came to Beit-Lechem in the beginning of katzir seorim (barley harvest).

Naomi Loses Her Husband and Sons
1 In the days when the judges ruled,[a](A) there was a famine in the land.(B) So a man from Bethlehem in Judah,(C) together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while(D) in the country of Moab.(E) 2 The man’s name was Elimelek,(F) his wife’s name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion.(G) They were Ephrathites(H) from Bethlehem,(I) Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.
3 Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 They married Moabite women,(J) one named Orpah and the other Ruth.(K) After they had lived there about ten years, 5 both Mahlon and Kilion(L) also died,(M) and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.
Naomi and Ruth Return to Bethlehem
6 When Naomi heard in Moab(N) that the Lord had come to the aid of his people(O) by providing food(P) for them, she and her daughters-in-law(Q) prepared to return home from there. 7 With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah.
8 Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you, to your mother’s home.(R) May the Lord show you kindness,(S) as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands(T) and to me. 9 May the Lord grant that each of you will find rest(U) in the home of another husband.”
Then she kissed(V) them goodbye and they wept aloud(W) 10 and said to her, “We will go back with you to your people.”
11 But Naomi said, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands?(X) 12 Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me—even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons— 13 would you wait until they grew up?(Y) Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter(Z) for me than for you, because the Lord’s hand has turned against me!(AA)”
14 At this they wept(AB) aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law(AC) goodbye,(AD) but Ruth clung to her.(AE)
15 “Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law(AF) is going back to her people and her gods.(AG) Go back with her.”
16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you(AH) or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go,(AI) and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people(AJ) and your God my God.(AK) 17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely,(AL) if even death separates you and me.”(AM) 18 When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.(AN)
19 So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem.(AO) When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred(AP) because of them, and the women exclaimed, “Can this be Naomi?”
20 “Don’t call me Naomi,[b]” she told them. “Call me Mara,[c] because the Almighty[d](AQ) has made my life very bitter.(AR) 21 I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty.(AS) Why call me Naomi? The Lord has afflicted[e] me;(AT) the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.”
22 So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabite,(AU) her daughter-in-law,(AV) arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest(AW) was beginning.(AX)
