Rut y Noemí
1 Aconteció que en los días en que gobernaban[a] los jueces(A), en Israel hubo hambre en el país(B). Y un hombre de Belén de Judá(C) fue a residir en los campos de Moab con[b] su mujer y sus dos hijos. 2 Aquel hombre se llamaba Elimelec, y su mujer se llamaba Noemí. Los nombres de sus dos hijos eran Mahlón y Quelión, efrateos de Belén de Judá. Y llegaron a los campos de Moab(D) y allí se quedaron. 3 Y murió Elimelec, marido de Noemí, y quedó ella con sus dos hijos. 4 Ellos se casaron con[c] mujeres moabitas; el nombre de una era Orfa y el nombre de la otra Rut. Y vivieron allí unos diez años. 5 Murieron también los dos[d], Mahlón y Quelión, y la mujer quedó privada de sus dos hijos y de su marido.
6 Entonces se levantó con sus nueras para regresar de la tierra de Moab, porque ella había oído en la tierra de Moab que el Señor había visitado a Su pueblo(E) dándole alimento(F). 7 Salió, pues, del lugar donde estaba, y sus dos nueras con ella, y se pusieron en camino para volver a la tierra de Judá. 8 Y Noemí dijo a sus dos nueras: «Vayan, regrese cada una a la casa de su madre. Que el Señor tenga misericordia(G) de ustedes como ustedes la han tenido con los que murieron y conmigo. 9 Que el Señor les conceda que hallen descanso, cada una en la casa de su marido». Entonces las besó, y ellas alzaron sus voces y lloraron, 10 y le dijeron: «No, sino que ciertamente volveremos contigo a tu pueblo». 11 Pero Noemí dijo: «Vuélvanse, hijas mías. ¿Por qué quieren ir conmigo? ¿Acaso tengo aún hijos en mis entrañas para que sean sus maridos(H)? 12 Vuélvanse, hijas mías. Váyanse, porque soy demasiado vieja para tener marido. Si dijera que tengo esperanza, y si aun tuviera un marido esta noche y también diera a luz hijos, 13 ¿esperarían por eso hasta que fueran mayores? ¿Dejarían ustedes de casarse por eso? No, hijas mías, porque eso es más difícil[e] para mí que para ustedes, pues la mano del Señor se ha levantado[f] contra mí(I)». 14 Y ellas alzaron sus voces y lloraron otra vez; y Orfa besó a su suegra, pero Rut se quedó con ella.
15 Entonces Noemí dijo: «Mira, tu cuñada ha regresado a su pueblo y a sus dioses(J); vuelve tras tu cuñada». 16 Pero Rut le respondió: «No insistas en que te deje o que deje de seguirte; porque adonde tú vayas, yo iré, y donde tú mores, moraré. Tu pueblo será mi pueblo, y tu Dios mi Dios. 17 Donde tú mueras, allí moriré, y allí seré sepultada. Así haga el Señor conmigo, y aún peor[g](K), si algo, excepto la muerte, nos separa». 18 Al ver Noemí que Rut estaba decidida a ir con ella, no le insistió más[h](L).
19 Caminaron, pues, las dos hasta que llegaron a Belén. Cuando llegaron a Belén, toda la ciudad se conmovió(M) a causa de ellas, y las mujeres decían: «¿No es esta Noemí?». 20 Ella les dijo: «No me llamen Noemí[i], llámenme Mara[j], porque el trato del Todopoderoso[k] me ha llenado de amargura[l](N). 21 Llena me fui, pero vacía me ha hecho volver el Señor(O). ¿Por qué me llaman Noemí, ya que el Señor ha dado testimonio contra mí y el Todopoderoso[m] me ha afligido?».
22 Y volvió Noemí, y con ella su nuera Rut la moabita, regresando así de los campos de Moab. Llegaron a Belén al comienzo de la siega de la cebada(P).

Elimélec y su familia van a Moab
1 1-2 Esta historia tuvo lugar cuando en el país de Israel todavía no había reyes; sino que al pueblo lo defendían libertadores ocasionales. En esa época no hubo cosechas y la gente no tenía qué comer.
Por eso, una familia del pueblo de Belén,[a] de la región de Judá, se fue a vivir al país de Moab, porque allí sí había comida. El esposo se llamaba Elimélec, la esposa se llamaba Noemí, y los hijos se llamaban Mahlón y Quilión.
3 Poco tiempo después de haber llegado a Moab, Elimélec murió, así que Noemí y sus hijos se quedaron solos.
4-5 Pasó el tiempo, y Mahlón y Quilión se casaron con muchachas de ese país. Una de ellas se llamaba Orfá y la otra, Rut. Pero pasados unos diez años, murieron Mahlón y Quilión,[b] por lo que Noemí quedó desamparada, sin hijos y sin marido.

6 Un día, Noemí supo que Dios había bendecido al país de Israel, dándole abundantes cosechas. 7 Entonces ella y sus nueras se prepararon para irse a Judá. 8 Todavía no habían caminado mucho cuando Noemí les dijo:
—Mejor regresen a vivir con sus familias. Que Dios las trate bien, como ustedes me han tratado a mí y trataron a mis hijos. 9 Pido a Dios que les permita casarse otra vez y formar un nuevo hogar.
Noemí se despidió de ellas con un beso, pero Orfá y Rut empezaron a llorar y 10 a decirle:
—¡No queremos separarnos de ti! ¡Por favor, déjanos ir contigo y vivir entre tu gente!
11-13 Pero Noemí les contestó:
—¡Váyanse, hijas mías! ¿Para qué van a seguirme? Ya no tengo más hijos para que se casen con ustedes, y ya estoy muy vieja para casarme otra vez. Y aun si hoy mismo pudiera casarme y tuviera hijos muy pronto, ¿estarían ustedes dispuestas a esperarlos hasta que ellos crecieran? ¡No, hijas mías, eso es imposible! Yo estoy sufriendo más que ustedes, pues Dios se ha puesto en mi contra.
14 Al oír esto, las nueras volvieron a llorar amargamente. Por fin Orfá[c] se despidió de su suegra, pero Rut se quedó con ella. 15 Entonces Noemí le dijo a Rut:
—¡Tu cuñada ya regresó a su pueblo y a su dios! ¡Vete con ella!
16 Pero Rut[d] le contestó:
«No me pidas que te deje;
ni me ruegues que te abandone.
Adonde tú vayas iré,
y donde tú vivas viviré.
»Tu pueblo será mi pueblo
y tu Dios será mi Dios.
17 Donde tú mueras moriré,
y allí mismo seré enterrada.
»Que Dios me castigue
si te abandono,
pues nada podrá separarnos;
¡nada, ni siquiera la muerte!»
18 Noemí no insistió más, pues comprendió que Rut había decidido irse con ella.
19 Caminaron y caminaron hasta llegar a Belén. Tan pronto entraron en el pueblo, toda la gente se sorprendió al verlas y se armó un gran alboroto. Las mujeres decían: «¡Miren, pero si es la dulce Noemí!»[e]
20 Y ella les dijo:
«Por favor, ya no me digan dulce, llámenme amarga, porque Dios todopoderoso me ha amargado la vida. 21 Cuando salí de Belén, tenía de todo; ahora que regreso, Dios me ha traído con las manos vacías. ¿Por qué me van a llamar dulce, si Dios todopoderoso está contra mí y me ha hecho sufrir?»
22 Fue así como Noemí regresó del país de Moab, acompañada de su nuera Rut. Cuando llegaron a Belén estaba empezando la cosecha de cebada.

Naomi Loses Her Husband and Sons
1 In the days when the judges ruled,[a](A) there was a famine in the land.(B) So a man from Bethlehem in Judah,(C) together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while(D) in the country of Moab.(E) 2 The man’s name was Elimelek,(F) his wife’s name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion.(G) They were Ephrathites(H) from Bethlehem,(I) Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.
3 Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 They married Moabite women,(J) one named Orpah and the other Ruth.(K) After they had lived there about ten years, 5 both Mahlon and Kilion(L) also died,(M) and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.
Naomi and Ruth Return to Bethlehem
6 When Naomi heard in Moab(N) that the Lord had come to the aid of his people(O) by providing food(P) for them, she and her daughters-in-law(Q) prepared to return home from there. 7 With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah.
8 Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you, to your mother’s home.(R) May the Lord show you kindness,(S) as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands(T) and to me. 9 May the Lord grant that each of you will find rest(U) in the home of another husband.”
Then she kissed(V) them goodbye and they wept aloud(W) 10 and said to her, “We will go back with you to your people.”
11 But Naomi said, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands?(X) 12 Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me—even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons— 13 would you wait until they grew up?(Y) Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter(Z) for me than for you, because the Lord’s hand has turned against me!(AA)”
14 At this they wept(AB) aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law(AC) goodbye,(AD) but Ruth clung to her.(AE)
15 “Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law(AF) is going back to her people and her gods.(AG) Go back with her.”
16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you(AH) or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go,(AI) and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people(AJ) and your God my God.(AK) 17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely,(AL) if even death separates you and me.”(AM) 18 When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.(AN)
19 So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem.(AO) When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred(AP) because of them, and the women exclaimed, “Can this be Naomi?”
20 “Don’t call me Naomi,[b]” she told them. “Call me Mara,[c] because the Almighty[d](AQ) has made my life very bitter.(AR) 21 I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty.(AS) Why call me Naomi? The Lord has afflicted[e] me;(AT) the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.”
22 So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabite,(AU) her daughter-in-law,(AV) arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest(AW) was beginning.(AX)

2 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
3 And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.
4 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
5 And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.
6 Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the Lord had visited his people in giving them bread.
7 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.
8 And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's house: the Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.
9 The Lord grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
10 And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.
11 And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
12 Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
13 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord is gone out against me.
14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.
15 And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.
16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
18 When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.
19 So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi?
20 And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.
21 I went out full and the Lord hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the Lord hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?
22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
