Fri från lagen

Har ni inte förstått än, kära judiska bröder som känner både Kristus och lagen, att när en människa dör så har inte lagen henne i sin makt längre?

Låt mig illustrera det: när en kvinna gifter sig binder lagen henne till mannen så länge han lever. Men om han dör, så är hon inte längre bunden till honom. Äktenskapslagarna gäller inte längre henne,

och om hon vill kan hon gifta sig med någon annan. Det skulle vara orätt medan mannen levde, men det är i sin ordning efter hans död.

Förut var den judiska lagen er man, er herre, men ni dog med Kristus på korset, och eftersom ni är döda är ni inte längre gifta med lagen, och den har ingen makt över er. Sedan uppstod ni med Kristus till ett nytt liv, och nu är ni nya människor. Ni är så att säga gifta med denne man, som stod upp från de döda, och nu kan ni tjäna Gud genom att göra gott.

När er gamla natur fortfarande levde tvingade synden er att göra allt det onda som leder till död.

Men nu behöver ni inte längre oroa er över judiska lagar och seder, för ni har dött bort ifrån deras fångenskap. Nu kan ni verkligen tjäna Gud, inte på det gamla sättet genom att mekaniskt lyda en massa regler, utan på det nya sättet av hela ert hjärta.

Lagen gör oss skyldiga

Betyder detta att jag menar att Guds lag är ond? Naturligtvis inte! Nej, lagen är inte syndig, men det var lagen som visade mig min synd. Jag skulle aldrig ha upptäckt synden i mitt inre - den längtan och de onda begär som finns gömda där och som leder till död - om inte lagen hade sagt: Du ska inte ha begär!

För synden skapar en längtan efter allt som är förbjudet. Det är bara när det inte finns några lagar att bryta som det inte finns synd.

Så länge jag inte förstod vad lagen egentligen krävde levde jag bekymmerslöst, men när jag fick veta sanningen insåg jag att jag hade brutit mot lagen och var en syndare, dömd att dö.

10 Och för mig blev det så, att lagen som skulle ha visat mig livets väg i stället dömde mig till döden!

11 Synden lurade mig genom att ta Guds goda lagar och använda dem till att förklara mig skyldig.

12 Men ni måste förstå att i sig själv var lagen fortfarande fullkomligt rättvis och god.

13 Men hur kan det vara så? Var inte lagen orsak till att jag dömdes? Hur kan den då vara god? Nej, det var synden, djävulsk som den är, som utnyttjade det som var gott till att få mig dömd. Här kan ni alltså se hur listig och dödlig och avskyvärd synden är. Den använder Guds goda lagar för sina egna onda syften.

Konflikten inom oss

14 Lagen är från Gud och är god. Det är inte det som är problemet, utan problemet finns hos mig, för jag är såld till slaveri med synden som min herre.

15 Jag förstår inte alls mig själv, för jag vill verkligen göra vad som är rätt, men jag kan det inte. Jag gör inte det jag vill göra, utan det jag hatar.

16 Jag vet att det som jag gör är orätt, och mitt dåliga samvete bevisar att jag godkänner de lagar jag bryter.

17 Men jag kan inte hjälpa det, för det är inte jag som gör det. Det är synden i mig, och den är starkare än jag!

18 Jag vet att det i mig själv, det vill säga i min egen syndiga natur, inte finns något gott. Det spelar ingen roll vart jag vänder mig, för jag kan ändå inte förmå mig själv att göra det som är rätt. Jag vill, men jag kan det inte.

19 När jag vill göra gott, så gör jag det inte, och när jag försöker att inte handla orätt, så gör jag det i alla fall.

20 Om jag nu gör vad jag inte vill, så är det klart var felet ligger. Synden har mig fortfarande i sitt onda grepp!

21 Det tycks vara ett ofrånkomligt faktum att när jag vill göra det som är rätt gör jag ändå hela tiden det som är orätt.

22 Med min nya natur älskar jag att göra Guds vilja.

23-25 Men det finns något annat inom mig, i min lägre natur, som ligger i strid med mitt förnuft och som besegrar mig och gör mig till slav under synden, som fortfarande finns i mig. Av hela mitt hjärta vill jag i lydnad tjäna Gud, men i stället finner jag att jag är slav under synden.Ni ser alltså hur det är: mitt nya liv säger till mig att göra det som är rätt, men den gamla naturen, som fortfarande finns i mig, älskar att synda. Vilken fruktansvärd situation jag befinner mig i! Vem kan befria mig från slaveriet under denna dödliga onda natur? Pris ske Gud! Det har skett genom Jesus Kristus, vår Herre. Han har gjort mig fri.

Paglalarawan mula sa Pag-aasawa

Hindi ba ninyo alam, mga kapatid—sinasabi ko ito sa inyong nakauunawa ng Kautusan—na ang Kautusan ay may kapangyarihan lamang sa isang tao habang siya ay nabubuhay? Halimbawa, ayon sa Kautusan, ang asawang babae ay nakatali sa kanyang asawang lalaki habang ito ay nabubuhay. Kung mamatay na ang lalaki, napalaya na ang babae sa Kautusang nagtatali sa kanya sa lalaki. Kaya nga, kung makikisama siya sa ibang lalaki habang buháy pa ang kanyang asawa, ituturing siyang isang mangangalunya. Ngunit kung mamatay ang kanyang asawa, malaya na siya sa Kautusan, at hindi mangangalunya kahit mag-asawa ng ibang lalaki. Gayundin naman, mga kapatid, namatay na kayo sa Kautusan sa pamamagitan ng katawan ni Cristo, upang kayo'y maging pag-aari ng iba, sa kanya na muling binuhay, mula sa kamatayan upang tayo'y magbunga para sa Diyos. Noong tayo'y nabubuhay pa sa laman, ang mga makasalanang pagnanasa, sa pamamagitan ng Kautusan, ay nag-uudyok sa ating mga bahagi upang magbunga tungo sa kamatayan. Ngunit ngayon ay pinalaya na tayo mula sa Kautusan, matapos tayong mamatay sa dating umaalipin sa atin, upang maging alipin tayo sa bagong buhay sa pamamagitan ng Espiritu, at hindi sa pamamagitan ng lumang nakasulat na tuntunin.

Ang Pagkaalipin sa Kasalanan

Ano ngayon ang (A) ibig nating sabihin? Kasalanan ba ang Kautusan? Huwag nawang mangyari! Gayunma'y hindi ko sana nakilala ang kasalanan kung hindi dahil sa Kautusan. Hindi ko sana nakilala ang kasakiman kung hindi sinabi ng Kautusan, “Huwag kang maging sakim.” Sinamantala ng kasalanan ang pagkakataon upang sa pamamagitan ng Kautusan ay gumawa sa aking kalooban ng lahat ng uri ng kasakiman. Sapagkat kung walang Kautusan, patay ang kasalanan. Noong una, nabubuhay akong hiwalay sa Kautusan. Ngunit nang dumating ang utos, muling nabuhay ang kasalanan, 10 at ako'y namatay. Ang Kautusan na dapat sanang magbigay sa akin ng buhay ang nagdulot sa akin ng kamatayan. 11 Sapagkat (B) sinamantala ng kasalanan ang pagkakataong nakita nito sa Kautusan upang ako ay dayain, at sa pamamagitan ng Kautusan ay pinatay ako. 12 Kaya ang Kautusan ay banal at ang tuntunin ay banal, matuwid, at mabuti.

13 Nangangahulugan bang ang mabuting bagay ang nagdulot sa akin ng kamatayan? Huwag nawang mangyari! Ang kasalanan ang pumatay sa akin sa pamamagitan ng mabuting Kautusan. Nangyari ito upang ipakita ang kasalanan bilang kasalanan, at upang sa pamamagitan ng Kautusan ay mapatunayan na ang kasalanan ay napakasama.

14 Alam nating ang Kautusan ay espirituwal, ngunit ako'y makalaman, at aliping ipinagbili sa kasalanan. 15 Hindi (C) ko maunawaan ang aking sarili. Sapagkat kung ano ang nais kong gawin ay hindi ko ginagawa, at kung ano ang kinamumuhian kong gawin ay siya namang aking ginagawa. 16 At kung ginagawa ko ang hindi ko nais, sumasang-ayon ako na mabuti nga ang Kautusan. 17 Kung gayon, hindi na ako ang gumagawa nito, kundi ang kasalanang naninirahan sa akin. 18 Alam kong walang anumang mabuting naninirahan sa aking likas na pagkatao. Sapagkat ang pagnanais na gumawa ng mabuti ay nasa akin, ngunit hindi ko ito maisagawa. 19 Sapagkat hindi ko ginagawa ang mabuti na nais kong gawin, kundi ang masama na ayaw kong gawin ang aking ginagawa. 20 At kung ang ayaw kong gawin ang aking ginagawa, hindi na ako ang gumagawa nito, kundi ang kasalanang naninirahan sa akin. 21 Kaya nga natuklasan ko ang isang tuntunin: kapag nais kong gumawa ng mabuti, ang kasamaan ay malapit sa akin. 22 Sa kaloob-looban ng aking pagkatao ay nasisiyahan ako sa Kautusan ng Diyos. 23 Subalit may nakikita akong ibang kautusan sa mga bahagi ng aking pagkatao na nakikipaglaban sa kautusan ng aking pag-iisip, at binibihag ako sa ilalim ng kautusan ng kasalanan na nasa bahagi ng aking pagkatao. 24 Napakalungkot kong tao! Sino ang sasagip sa akin mula sa katawang ito na nagdudulot ng kamatayan? 25 Salamat sa Diyos sa pamamagitan ni Jesu-Cristo na ating Panginoon! Kaya nga, sa aking isip ako ay alipin sa Kautusan ng Diyos, ngunit sa aking laman ako'y alipin sa kautusan ng kasalanan.

Released From the Law, Bound to Christ

Do you not know, brothers and sisters(A)—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.(B) So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress.(C) But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.

So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law(D) through the body of Christ,(E) that you might belong to another,(F) to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For when we were in the realm of the flesh,[a](G) the sinful passions aroused by the law(H) were at work in us,(I) so that we bore fruit for death.(J) But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law(K) so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.(L)

The Law and Sin

What shall we say, then?(M) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!(N) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.(O) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”[b](P) But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(Q) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.(R) Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life(S) actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(T) deceived me,(U) and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.(V)

13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good(W) to bring about my death,(X) so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.

14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,(Y) sold(Z) as a slave to sin.(AA) 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.(AB) 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.(AC) 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.(AD) 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c](AE) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.(AF) 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.(AG)

21 So I find this law at work:(AH) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being(AI) I delight in God’s law;(AJ) 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war(AK) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin(AL) at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?(AM) 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!(AN)

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,(AO) but in my sinful nature[d] a slave to the law of sin.(AP)

Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.

12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
