⁷ For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed, it cannot,^(A)

⁴ Adulterers!^[a] Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.^(A)

¹⁴ Those who are unspiritual^[a] do not receive the gifts of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.^(A)

¹⁵ Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world,^{(A) 16} for all that is in the world—the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches—comes not from the Father but from the world.

¹⁸ they are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance and hardness of heart.^{(A) 19} They have lost all sensitivity and have abandoned themselves to licentiousness, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

²² For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self,^(A)

⁴ treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,^(A)

²¹ And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,

⁴ so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.^[a](A)
