Christ Has Freed Us from the Law[a]

Chapter 7

The Time of the Law Has Passed.[b] Are you aware, brethren (for I am certain that you are people who have knowledge of the Law), that a person is bound by the Law only during that person’s lifetime? For example, a woman is bound by the Law to her husband as long as he lives, but if her husband dies, she is released from her husband in regard to the Law. Therefore, she will be judged to be an adulteress if she has relations with another man while her husband is still alive. However, if her husband dies, she is free from that provision of the Law, and if she then has relations with another man, she is not an adulteress.

In the same way, brethren, through the body of Christ you have died to the Law and have been set free to belong to another, that is, to the one who rose from the dead in order that we might bear fruit for God. For when we were in the flesh, our sinful passions were aroused by the Law and at work in our bodies, and they bore fruit for death. But now, we are released from the Law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we may serve in the new life of the Spirit in contrast to the old written code.[c]

The Function of the Law.[d] What then should we say? That the Law is sinful? Absolutely not! Yet if it had not been for the Law, I would not have known what sin was. I would not have known what covet is if the Law had not said, “You shall not covet.” But sin seized the opportunity offered by the commandment and produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the Law, sin is dead.

I lived apart from the Law, but when the commandment came, sin came to life, 10 and I died. The commandment that was for life proved to be death for me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity offered by the commandment, deceived me,[e] and through it killed me. 12 And so the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.

13 Did what is good, then, cause my death? By no means! But in order that sin might be recognized as such, it brought about my death through what is good, and therefore through the commandment sin became completely sinful.

14 Sin and Death. We clearly understand that the Law is spiritual, but I am unspiritual, sold into slavery to sin. 15 I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want; rather, I do what I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, then I agree that the Law is good.[f] 17 This indicates that it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot do what is good. 19 For I do not do the good I desire; rather, it is the evil I do not desire that I end up doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not desire, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 I have thus discovered this principle: when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. 22 In my innermost self, I delight in the Law of God, 23 but I perceive in the members of my body another law at war with the Law that I cherish in my mind. Thus, I am made captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body destined for death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then, with my mind I am a slave to the Law of God, but with my flesh to the law of sin.

  1. Romans 7:1 Human alienation finds expression in three main forms: sin, death, and law. Salvation delivers human beings from this threefold enslavement. The law here is, of course, the Law of Moses, but it is also the command given by God to the first couple and, in the last analysis, every law that is imposed from outside.
  2. Romans 7:1 Christians have been freed from the Law. This is a way of saying that a new regime, that of the Spirit, henceforth energizes their life.
  3. Romans 7:6 Written code or “letter” is here the written Law of Moses.
  4. Romans 7:7 Christ was put to death because he affirmed the priority of the spirit over legalism. In fact, it is sin that falsifies the human condition. Without having the power to neutralize it, the Law unmasks it and then buries human beings under the weight of guilt (see Gal 3:10-14, 19-22).

  6. Romans 7:16 I agree that the Law is good: the Holy Spirit reveals to Paul the essential goodness of the Law even when Paul is inclined to rebel against it and disobey it.

De wet van God laat ons zien dat we slecht zijn

Broeders en zusters, jullie kennen de wet. Jullie weten ook dat de wet alleen over ons heerst zolang we leven. Bijvoorbeeld: Een getrouwde vrouw moet van de wet bij haar man blijven, zolang hij leeft. Maar als haar man is gestorven, heeft ze niet meer met die wet te maken. Zolang haar man nog leeft, is het verkeerd als ze met een andere man trouwt. Want dan is ze ontrouw aan haar man. Maar als haar man is gestorven, is ze vrij van die wet. Dan is ze niet meer ontrouw aan haar man als ze met een andere man trouwt.

Zo is het ook met jullie, broeders en zusters. Voor de wet van Mozes bestaan jullie niet meer. Dat komt doordat jullie samen met Christus zijn gestorven. Daardoor konden jullie het eigendom worden van iemand anders. Namelijk van Jezus, die uit de dood is opgestaan. Daardoor kunnen jullie voortaan leven op de manier die God graag wil. Want toen we nog niet in Jezus geloofden, zorgden onze verkeerde verlangens ervoor dat we slechte dingen deden. Die verkeerde verlangens werden nog sterker doordat de wet van Mozes ze verbood. We deden de dingen waartoe het kwaad ons opstookte. En het gevolg was de dood. Maar nu we met Jezus gestorven zijn, heeft de wet van Mozes niets meer over ons te zeggen. We bestaan niet meer voor die wet waaraan we ons moesten houden, want we zijn dood voor de wet. Vroeger dienden we God door middel van de wet van Mozes. Maar nu niet meer. Nu dienen we God als nieuwe mensen, door Gods Geest.

Hoe zit het dan? Is de wet dan iets slechts? Nee, helemaal niet. Want zonder de wet zou ik niet geweten hebben wat slecht is. Ik zou bijvoorbeeld niet geweten hebben dat jaloersheid verkeerd is, als de wet niet had gezegd dat je niet jaloers mag zijn. De wet is dus niet verkeerd. Maar het kwaad gebruikte de wet om macht over mij te krijgen: ik werd opgestookt tot allerlei verkeerde dingen. Maar zonder de wet heeft het kwaad geen enkele macht. Vroeger toen ik klein was, leefde ik zonder de wet te kennen. Maar toen ik volwassen werd en de wet leerde kennen, begon het kwaad in mij te leven. Dat veroorzaakte mijn dood. 10 De wet die mij leven had moeten brengen, werd juist mijn dood. 11 Want door de wet kreeg het kwaad macht over mij. Het kwaad gebruikte de wet als wapen om mij verkeerde dingen te laten doen. Zo werd ik schuldig en verdiende ik de dood. 12 Maar de wet op zichzelf is heilig. En wat de wet van ons vraagt, is heilig en rechtvaardig en goed.

13 Heeft iets goeds mij dan gedood? Nee, helemaal niet! Maar het kwaad heeft iets goeds gebruikt (namelijk de wet) om mij te doden. Dat laat wel heel duidelijk zien hoe slecht het kwaad is.

Onze eigen machteloosheid tegen het kwaad

14 We weten dat de wet van Mozes een geestelijke wet is. Maar ík ben van vlees en bloed en een slaaf van het kwaad. 15 En ik begrijp zelf niet wat ik aan het doen ben. Want ik doe niet wat ik zou wíllen doen. Maar ik doe juist dat wat ik níet wil doen omdat het slecht is. 16 Als ik dus doe wat ik níet wil doen, geef ik toe dat de wet gelijk heeft en goed is. 17 Maar dan ben ik het dus niet zelf, die verkeerde dingen doe. Maar het kwaad in mij doet dat. 18 Want ik weet dat in mijzelf (en daarmee bedoel ik in mijn oude 'ik')[a] niets goeds woont. Want ik wíl het goede wel doen, maar het lukt me niet. 19 Want ik doe niet het goede dat ik zou wíllen doen, maar ik doe juist het slechte dat ik níet wil doen. 20 Als ik nu juist doe wat ik níet wil, dan komt dat niet door mijzelf, maar door het kwaad dat in mij zit. 21 En zo gaat het altijd: als ik het goede wil doen, zorgt het kwaad in mij ervoor dat ik het slechte doe. 22 Want met mijn geest en mijn verstand wil ik graag doen wat de wet van God vraagt. 23 Maar mijn 'ik' strijdt tegen mijn verstand en wil andere dingen doen. Zo word ik een gevangene van het kwaad dat in mij zit. 24 Wat een vreselijke toestand! Wie kan mij bevrijden van dit 'ik' waar het kwaad in woont dat mij doodt? 25 Prijs God: Jezus Christus! 26 Het zit dus zo: met mijn geest en mijn verstand wil ik graag gehoorzaam zijn aan de wet van God. Maar mijn 'ik' gehoorzaamt aan 'de wet van het kwaad'.

  1. Romeinen 7:18 Met het 'oude ik' wordt onze eigen menselijke aard bedoeld. Het wordt in de meeste vertalingen 'vlees' genoemd. In onszelf, als mens, is niets goeds. Maar doordat Gods Geest in ons is komen wonen, is dat veranderd. We zijn opnieuw geboren (lees Johannes 1:12). We zijn nieuwe mensen geworden (lees Romeinen 6:4). Freed from the Law

Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law [a]has dominion over a man as long as he lives? So then (B)if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. Therefore, my brethren, you also have become (C)dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should (D)bear fruit to God. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law (E)were at work in our members (F)to bear fruit to death. But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve (G)in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

Sin’s Advantage in the Law

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, (H)I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, (I)“You shall not covet.” But (J)sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For (K)apart from the law sin was dead. I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. 10 And the commandment, (L)which was to bring life, I found to bring death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me. 12 Therefore (M)the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

Law Cannot Save from Sin

13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, (N)sold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. (O)For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that (P)in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I (Q)delight in the law of God according to (R)the inward man. 23 But (S)I see another law in (T)my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me (U)from this body of death? 25 (V)I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.

12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
