Law Cannot Save from Sin

¹³Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. ¹⁴For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, ^(A)sold under sin. ¹⁵For what I am doing, I do not understand. ^(B)For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. ¹⁶If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. ¹⁷But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. ¹⁸For I know that ^(C)in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. ¹⁹For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. ²⁰Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

¹³That which is good then, to me hath it become death? let it not be! but the sin, that it might appear sin, through the good, working death to me, that the sin might become exceeding sinful through the command,

¹⁴for we have known that the law is spiritual, and I am fleshly, sold by the sin;

¹⁵for that which I work, I do not acknowledge; for not what I will, this I practise, but what I hate, this I do.

¹⁶And if what I do not will, this I do, I consent to the law that [it is] good,

¹⁷and now it is no longer I that work it, but the sin dwelling in me,

¹⁸for I have known that there doth not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh, good: for to will is present with me, and to work that which is right I do not find,

¹⁹for the good that I will, I do not; but the evil that I do not will, this I practise.

The Conflict of Serving Two Masters

¹⁴For we know that the Law is ^(B)spiritual, but I am ^(C)fleshly, ^(D)sold ^[b]^(E)into bondage to sin. ¹⁵For ^(F)I do not understand what I am doing; for I am not practicing ^(G)what I want to do, but I do the very thing I hate. ¹⁶However, if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with ^(H)the Law, that the Law is good. ¹⁷But now, ^(I)no longer am I the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me. ¹⁸For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my ^(J)flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. ¹⁹For ^(K)the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. ²⁰But if I do the very thing I do not want, ^(L)I am no longer the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me.
