Chapter 6
Baptized in Christ Jesus.[b] 1 What then shall we say? Should we persist in sin in order that grace may abound? 2 Of course not! We have died to sin. How can we live in it any longer? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Through that baptism into his death we were buried with him, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,[c] so we too might begin to live a new life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall also be united with him in his resurrection. 6 We know that our old[d] self was crucified with him, so that our sinful body might be destroyed and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For whoever has died has been freed from sin.
8 However, if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him.[e] 9 We know that Christ, once raised from the dead, will never die again. Death no longer has power over him. 10 When he died, he died to sin once and for all. However, the life he lives, he lives for God. 11 In the same way, you must regard yourselves as being dead to sin and alive for God in Christ Jesus.
12 Therefore, do not allow sin to reign over your mortal body and make you obey its desires. 13 Nor should you present any part of your body as an instrument for wickedness leading to sin. Rather, present yourselves to God as having been raised from death to life and the parts of your body to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin is no longer to have any power over you, since you are not under the Law but under grace.
15 A Slave of Righteousness. What then? Should we sin because we are not under the Law but under grace? Of course not! 16 Do you not know that if you offer yourself as an obedient slave, you are the slave of the one you obey—either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
17 Once you were slaves of sin, but, thanks be to God, you have become obedient in your heart to that pattern of teaching to which you have been delivered. 18 Now, having been set free from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness.
19 I am speaking in human terms because you are still weak human beings. For just as you once offered your bodies as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to greater iniquity, so now present them as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.
20 When you were slaves of sin, you were free from the restraints of righteousness. 21 But what advantage did you get then from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 However, now that you have been freed from sin and bound to the service of God, the benefit you receive is sanctification, and the end is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift freely given by God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

- Romans 6:1 Salvation is grace that transcends sin and the power of human beings or even of the Law. This passage urges us to reflect on the meaning of Baptism in the life of a Christian.
- Romans 6:1 In the History of Salvation, there is a unique event: the Death and Resurrection of Jesus; it is the departure for a new life. Through Baptism, the believer enters into this experience of Christ and shares its power. Baptism inaugurates a newness of life that will be brought to completion in the future.
- Romans 6:4 Glory of the Father: God who reveals his power and holiness.
- Romans 6:6 The adjective old has a precise meaning for Paul: it describes the reality of a sinful world that is closed against the new life that has its source in Christ (see 1 Cor 5:7-8; 2 Cor 3:14); the old self and the sinful body signify the human being as marked by sin (Gal 3:26-29).
- Romans 6:8 In the experience of Christ, resurrection followed upon death; hence, believers who die with Christ are raised to a new quality of moral life. This resurrection is already a fact, and it exerts itself more and more in the life of believers.

Muertos al pecado
6 Entonces, ¿qué diremos? ¿Seguiremos pecando, para que la gracia abunde? 2 ¡De ninguna manera! Porque los que hemos muerto al pecado, ¿cómo podemos seguir viviendo en él? 3 ¿No saben ustedes que todos los que fuimos bautizados en Cristo Jesús, fuimos bautizados en su muerte? 4 Porque por el bautismo fuimos sepultados con él en su muerte, para que así como Cristo resucitó de los muertos por la gloria del Padre, así también nosotros vivamos una vida nueva.(A)
5 Porque si nos hemos unido a Cristo en su muerte, así también nos uniremos a él en su resurrección. 6 Sabemos que nuestro antiguo yo fue crucificado juntamente con él, para que el cuerpo del pecado sea destruido, a fin de que no sirvamos más al pecado. 7 Porque el que ha muerto, ha sido liberado del pecado. 8 Así que, si morimos con Cristo, creemos que también viviremos con él. 9 Sabemos que Cristo resucitó y que no volverá a morir, pues la muerte ya no tiene poder sobre él. 10 Porque en cuanto a su muerte, murió al pecado de una vez y para siempre; pero en cuanto a su vida, vive para Dios. 11 Así también ustedes, considérense muertos al pecado pero vivos para Dios en Cristo Jesús, nuestro Señor.
12 Por lo tanto, no permitan ustedes que el pecado reine en su cuerpo mortal, ni lo obedezcan en sus malos deseos. 13 Tampoco presenten sus miembros al pecado como instrumentos de iniquidad, sino preséntense ustedes mismos a Dios como vivos de entre los muertos, y presenten sus miembros a Dios como instrumentos de justicia. 14 El pecado ya no tendrá poder sobre ustedes, pues ya no están bajo la ley sino bajo la gracia.
Siervos de la justicia
15 ¿Entonces, qué? ¿Pecaremos porque no estamos bajo la ley sino bajo la gracia? ¡De ninguna manera! 16 ¿Acaso no saben ustedes que, si se someten a alguien para obedecerlo como esclavos, se hacen esclavos de aquel a quien obedecen, ya sea del pecado que lleva a la muerte, o de la obediencia que lleva a la justicia? 17 Pero gracias a Dios que, aunque ustedes eran esclavos del pecado, han obedecido de corazón al modelo de enseñanza que han recibido, 18 y una vez liberados del pecado llegaron a ser siervos de la justicia. 19 Hablo en términos humanos, por la debilidad de su naturaleza humana. Así como para practicar la iniquidad presentaron sus miembros para servir a la impureza y la maldad, ahora, para practicar la santidad, presenten sus miembros para servir a la justicia.
20 Cuando ustedes eran esclavos del pecado, eran libres en cuanto a la justicia. 21 ¿Pero qué provecho sacaron de eso? Ahora ustedes se avergüenzan de aquellas cosas, pues conducen a la muerte; 22 pero como ya han sido liberados del pecado y hechos siervos de Dios, el provecho que obtienen es la santificación, cuya meta final es la vida eterna. 23 Porque la paga del pecado es muerte, pero la dádiva de Dios es vida eterna en Cristo Jesús, nuestro Señor.

6 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
