God’s Righteous Judgment

Therefore you are (A)without excuse, (B)O man, everyone who passes judgment, for in that which (C)you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God [a]rightly falls upon those who practice such things. But do you presume this, (D)O man—who passes judgment on those who practice such things and does the same—that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you think lightly of (E)the riches of His (F)kindness and (G)forbearance and (H)patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? But [b]because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart (I)you are storing up wrath for yourself (J)in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, (K)who will repay to each according to his works: to those who by (L)perseverance in doing good seek for (M)glory and honor and (N)immortality, (O)eternal life; but to those who are (P)selfishly ambitious and (Q)do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger. There will be (R)affliction and turmoil [c]for every soul of man who works out evil, of the Jew (S)first and also of the Greek, 10 but (T)glory and honor and peace to everyone who works good, to the Jew (U)first and also to the Greek. 11 For (V)there is no partiality with God.

12 For all who have sinned [d](W)without the Law will also perish [e]without the Law, and all who have sinned [f]under the Law will be judged [g]by the Law. 13 For it is (X)not the hearers [h]of the Law who are [i]just before God, but the doers [j]of the Law will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles who do not have [k]the Law (Y)naturally do the things of the Law, these, not having [l]the Law, are a law to themselves, 15 in that they demonstrate (Z)the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, 16 on the day when, (AA)according to my gospel, (AB)God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus.

The Jew Is Judged by the Law

17 But if you bear the name “Jew” and (AC)rely [m]upon the Law and boast in God, 18 and know His will and [n](AD)approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law, 19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 a [o]corrector of the foolish, a teacher of [p]the immature, having in the Law (AE)the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth, 21 you, therefore, (AF)who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who [q]preach that one shall not steal, do you steal? 22 You who say that one should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you (AG)rob temples? 23 You who (AH)boast [r]in the Law, through your transgression of the Law, do you dishonor God? 24 For “(AI)the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles (AJ)because of you,” just as it is written.

25 For indeed circumcision is of value if you (AK)practice [s]the Law, but if you are a transgressor [t]of the Law, (AL)your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 (AM)So if (AN)the [u]uncircumcised man (AO)observes the righteous requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision? 27 And (AP)he who is physically uncircumcised, if he [v]fulfills the Law, will he not (AQ)judge you who, through the letter of the Law and circumcision, are a transgressor [w]of the Law? 28 For (AR)he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. 29 But (AS)he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and (AT)circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the (AU)Spirit, not by the letter; (AV)and his praise is not from men, but from God.

God Judges Fairly

If you judge someone else, you have no excuse for it. When you judge another person, you are judging yourself. You do the same things you blame others for doing. We know that when God judges those who do evil things, he judges fairly. Though you are only a human being, you judge others. But you yourself do the same things. So how do you think you will escape when God judges you? Do you disrespect God’s great kindness and favor? Do you disrespect God when he is patient with you? Don’t you realize that God’s kindness is meant to turn you away from your sins?

But you are stubborn. In your heart you are not sorry for your sins. You are storing up anger against yourself. The day of God’s anger is coming. Then his way of judging fairly will be shown. God “will pay back each person in keeping with what they have done.” (Psalm 62:12; Proverbs 24:12) God will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good. They want glory, honor, and life that never ends. But there are others who only look out for themselves. They don’t accept the truth. They go astray. God will pour out his great anger on them. There will be trouble and suffering for everyone who does evil. That is meant first for the Jews. It is also meant for the Gentiles. 10 But there will be glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good. That is meant first for the Jews. It is also meant for the Gentiles. 11 God treats everyone the same.

12 Some people do not know God’s law when they sin. They will not be judged by the law when they die. Others do know God’s law when they sin. They will be judged by the law. 13 Hearing the law does not make a person right with God. People are considered to be right with God only when they obey the law. 14 Gentiles do not have the law. Sometimes they just naturally do what the law requires. They are a law for themselves. This is true even though they don’t have the law. 15 They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts. The way their minds judge them proves this fact. Sometimes their thoughts find them guilty. At other times their thoughts find them not guilty. 16 This will happen on the day God appoints Jesus Christ to judge people’s secret thoughts. That’s part of my good news.

The Jews and the Law

17 Suppose you call yourself a Jew. You trust in the law. You brag that you know God. 18 You know what God wants. You agree with what is best because the law teaches you. 19 You think you know so much more than the people you teach. You think you’re helping blind people. You think you are a light for those in the dark. 20 You think you can make foolish people wise. You act like you’re teaching little children. You think that the law gives you all knowledge and truth. 21 You claim to teach others, but you don’t even teach yourself! You preach against stealing. But you steal! 22 You say that people should not commit adultery. But you commit adultery! You hate statues of gods. But you rob temples! 23 You brag about the law. But when you break it, you rob God of his honor! 24 It is written, “The Gentiles say evil things against God’s name because of you.” (Isaiah 52:5; Ezekiel 36:22)

25 Circumcision has value if you obey the law. But if you break the law, it is just as if you hadn’t been circumcised. 26 And sometimes those who aren’t circumcised do what the law requires. Won’t God accept them as if they had been circumcised? 27 Many are not circumcised physically, but they obey the law. They will prove that you are guilty. You are breaking the law, even though you have the written law and are circumcised.

28 A person is not a Jew if they are a Jew only on the outside. And circumcision is more than just something done to the outside of a man’s body. 29 No, a person is a Jew only if they are a Jew on the inside. And true circumcision means that the heart has been circumcised by the Holy Spirit. The person whose heart has been circumcised does more than obey the written law. The praise that matters for that kind of person does not come from other people. It comes from God.

¶ Therefore, thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest; for in that which thou dost judge another, thou dost condemn thyself; for thou that judgest others doest the same things.

For we are sure that the judgment of God is according to the truth against those who do such things.

And dost thou think this, O man, that judgest those who do such things and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

Or dost thou despise the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering, ignoring that the goodness of God leads thee to repentance?

But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasures up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

who will render to everyone according to his deeds:

to those who persevered in well doing, glory and honour and incorruption, to those who seek eternal life;

but unto those that are contentious and do not obey the truth, but are persuaded by unrighteousness, indignation and wrath.

Tribulation and anguish shall be upon every human soul that does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek;

10 but glory, honour, and peace to everyone that works good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law

13 (for not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified;

14 for when the Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature that which is of the law, these, not having the law, are a law unto themselves;

15 which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, accusing and also excusing their reasonings one with another)

16 in the day when God shall judge that which men have covered up, according to my gospel by Jesus, the Christ.

17 ¶ Behold, thou doth call thyself a Jew and art supported by the law and doth glory in God

18 and dost know his will and approve the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law,

19 and art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of those who are in darkness,

20 an instructor of the ignorant, a teacher of children, who hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.

21 Thou, therefore, who teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? Thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?

22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? Thou that dost abhor idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?

23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, with rebellion to the law doth thou dishonour God?

24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.

25 For circumcision verily profits if thou keep the law, but if thou art a rebel to the law, thy circumcision is made into a foreskin.

26 Therefore if the uncircumcised keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his foreskin be counted for circumcision?

27 And that which is by nature foreskin, but keeps the law perfectly, shall judge thee who with the letter and with the circumcision art rebellious to the law.

28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, neither is circumcision that which is done outwardly in the flesh;

29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit and not in the letter, whose praise is not of men, but of God.
