Living Sacrifices to God

12 I (A)beseech[a] you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies (B)a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your [b]reasonable service. And (C)do not be conformed to this world, but (D)be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may (E)prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Serve God with Spiritual Gifts

For I say, (F)through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, (G)not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt (H)to each one a measure of faith. For (I)as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so (J)we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is (K)given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us (L)prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; (M)he who teaches, in teaching; (N)he who exhorts, in exhortation; (O)he who gives, with liberality; (P)he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, (Q)with cheerfulness.

Behave Like a Christian

(R)Let love be without hypocrisy. (S)Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. 10 (T)Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, (U)in honor giving preference to one another; 11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 (V)rejoicing in hope, (W)patient[c] in tribulation, (X)continuing steadfastly in prayer; 13 (Y)distributing to the needs of the saints, (Z)given[d] to hospitality.

14 (AA)Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 (AB)Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 (AC)Be of the same mind toward one another. (AD)Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

17 (AE)Repay no one evil for evil. (AF)Have[e] regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, (AG)live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, (AH)do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, (AI)“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 Therefore

(AJ)“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but (AK)overcome evil with good.

Submit to Government

13 Let every soul be (AL)subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists (AM)the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will [f]bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? (AN)Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. Therefore (AO)you must be subject, not only because of wrath (AP)but also for conscience’ sake. For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. (AQ)Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.

Love Your Neighbor(AR)

Owe no one anything except to love one another, for (AS)he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, (AT)“You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” [g]“You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, (AU)“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore (AV)love is the fulfillment of the law.

Put on Christ

11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time (AW)to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. (AX)Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and (AY)let us put on the armor of light. 13 (AZ)Let us walk [h]properly, as in the day, (BA)not in revelry and drunkenness, (BB)not in lewdness and lust, (BC)not in strife and envy. 14 But (BD)put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and (BE)make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

The Law of Liberty

14 Receive(BF) one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. For one believes he (BG)may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and (BH)let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. (BI)Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.

(BJ)One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who (BK)observes the day, observes it to the Lord; [i]and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for (BL)he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. For (BM)none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we (BN)live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For (BO)to this end Christ died [j]and rose and lived again, that He might be (BP)Lord of both the dead and the living. 10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For (BQ)we shall all stand before the judgment seat of [k]Christ. 11 For it is written:

(BR)As I live, says the Lord,
Every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall confess to God.”

12 So then (BS)each of us shall give account of himself to God. 13 Therefore let us not judge one another [l]anymore, but rather resolve this, (BT)not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.

The Law of Love

14 I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus (BU)that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15 Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. (BV)Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died. 16 (BW)Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil; 17 (BX)for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and (BY)peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For he who serves Christ in [m]these things (BZ)is acceptable to God and approved by men.

19 (CA)Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which (CB)one may [n]edify another. 20 (CC)Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. (CD)All things indeed are pure, (CE)but it is evil for the man who eats with [o]offense. 21 It is good neither to eat (CF)meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles [p]or is offended or is made weak. 22 [q]Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. (CG)Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for (CH)whatever is not from faith is [r]sin.

Bearing Others’ Burdens

15 We (CI)then who are strong ought to bear with the [s]scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. (CJ)Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to [t]edification. (CK)For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, (CL)“The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” For (CM)whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the [u]patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. (CN)Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may (CO)with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Glorify God Together

Therefore (CP)receive one another, just (CQ)as Christ also received [v]us, to the glory of God. Now I say that (CR)Jesus Christ has become a [w]servant to the circumcision for the truth of God, (CS)to confirm the promises made to the fathers, and (CT)that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy, as it is written:

(CU)“For this reason I will confess to You among the Gentiles,
And sing to Your name.”

10 And again he says:

(CV)“Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people!”

11 And again:

(CW)“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles!
Laud Him, all you peoples!”

12 And again, Isaiah says:

(CX)“There shall be a root of Jesse;
And He who shall rise to reign over the Gentiles,
In Him the Gentiles shall hope.”

13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all (CY)joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

From Jerusalem to Illyricum

14 Now (CZ)I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, (DA)filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish [x]one another. 15 Nevertheless, brethren, I have written more boldly to you on some points, as reminding you, (DB)because of the grace given to me by God, 16 that (DC)I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the (DD)offering [y]of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 Therefore I have reason to glory in Christ Jesus (DE)in the things which pertain to God. 18 For I will not dare to speak of any of those things (DF)which Christ has not accomplished through me, in word and deed, (DG)to make the Gentiles obedient— 19 (DH)in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. 20 And so I have made it my aim to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, (DI)lest I should build on another man’s foundation, 21 but as it is written:

(DJ)“To whom He was not announced, they shall see;
And those who have not heard shall understand.”

Plan to Visit Rome

22 For this reason (DK)I also have been much hindered from coming to you. 23 But now no longer having a place in these parts, and (DL)having a great desire these many years to come to you, 24 whenever I journey to Spain, [z]I shall come to you. For I hope to see you on my journey, (DM)and to be helped on my way there by you, if first I may (DN)enjoy your company for a while. 25 But now (DO)I am going to Jerusalem to [aa]minister to the saints. 26 For (DP)it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem. 27 It pleased them indeed, and they are their debtors. For (DQ)if the Gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, (DR)their duty is also to minister to them in material things. 28 Therefore, when I have performed this and have sealed to them (DS)this fruit, I shall go by way of you to Spain. 29 (DT)But I know that when I come to you, I shall come in the fullness of the blessing [ab]of the gospel of Christ.

30 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and (DU)through the love of the Spirit, (DV)that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me, 31 (DW)that I may be delivered from those in Judea who [ac]do not believe, and that (DX)my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, 32 (DY)that I may come to you with joy (DZ)by the will of God, and may (EA)be refreshed together with you. 33 Now (EB)the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Sister Phoebe Commended

16 I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church in (EC)Cenchrea, (ED)that you may receive her in the Lord (EE)in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her in whatever business she has need of you; for indeed she has been a helper of many and of myself also.

Greeting Roman Saints

Greet (EF)Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles. Likewise greet (EG)the church that is in their house.

Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who is (EH)the firstfruits of [ad]Achaia to Christ. Greet Mary, who labored much for us. Greet Andronicus and Junia, my countrymen and my fellow prisoners, who are of note among the (EI)apostles, who also (EJ)were in Christ before me.

Greet Amplias, my beloved in the Lord. Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and Stachys, my beloved. 10 Greet Apelles, approved in Christ. Greet those who are of the household of Aristobulus. 11 Greet Herodion, my [ae]countryman. Greet those who are of the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord.

12 Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, who have labored in the Lord. Greet the beloved Persis, who labored much in the Lord. 13 Greet Rufus, (EK)chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine. 14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Hermes, and the brethren who are with them. 15 Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who are with them.

16 (EL)Greet one another with a holy kiss. [af]The churches of Christ greet you.

Avoid Divisive Persons

17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those (EM)who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and (EN)avoid them. 18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord [ag]Jesus Christ, but (EO)their own belly, and (EP)by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. 19 For (EQ)your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be (ER)wise in what is good, and [ah]simple concerning evil. 20 And (ES)the God of peace (ET)will crush Satan under your feet shortly.

(EU)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Greetings from Paul’s Friends

21 (EV)Timothy, my fellow worker, and (EW)Lucius, (EX)Jason, and (EY)Sosipater, my countrymen, greet you.

22 I, Tertius, who wrote this epistle, greet you in the Lord.

23 (EZ)Gaius, my host and the host of the whole church, greets you. (FA)Erastus, the treasurer of the city, greets you, and Quartus, a brother. 24 (FB)The[ai] grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Benediction

25 [aj]Now (FC)to Him who is able to establish you (FD)according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, (FE)according to the revelation of the mystery (FF)kept secret since the world began 26 but (FG)now made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures made known to all nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for (FH)obedience to the faith— 27 to (FI)God, alone wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen.

Greeting

Paul, (FJ)called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ (FK)through the will of God, and (FL)Sosthenes our brother,

To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who (FM)are [ak]sanctified in Christ Jesus, (FN)called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ (FO)our Lord, (FP)both theirs and ours:

(FQ)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Gifts at Corinth

(FR)I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus, that you were enriched in everything by Him (FS)in all [al]utterance and all knowledge, even as (FT)the testimony of Christ was confirmed [am]in you, so that you come short in no gift, eagerly (FU)waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, (FV)who will also confirm you to the end, (FW)that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. (FX)God is faithful, by whom you were called into (FY)the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Sectarianism Is Sin

10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (FZ)that you all [an]speak the same thing, and that there be no [ao]divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are [ap]contentions among you. 12 Now I say this, that (GA)each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of (GB)Apollos,” or “I am of (GC)Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13 (GD)Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

14 I thank God that I baptized (GE)none of you except (GF)Crispus and (GG)Gaius, 15 lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. 16 Yes, I also baptized the household of (GH)Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, (GI)not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.

Christ the Power and Wisdom of God(GJ)

18 For the [aq]message of the cross is (GK)foolishness to (GL)those who are perishing, but to us (GM)who are being saved it is the (GN)power of God. 19 For it is written:

(GO)“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

20 (GP)Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the [ar]disputer of this age? (GQ)Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the (GR)wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For (GS)Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, (GT)to the Jews a [as]stumbling block and to the [at]Greeks (GU)foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ (GV)the power of God and (GW)the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Glory Only in the Lord

26 For [au]you see your calling, brethren, (GX)that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many [av]noble, are called. 27 But (GY)God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the [aw]base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and (GZ)righteousness and sanctification and redemption— 31 that, as it is written, (HA)“He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”

Christ Crucified

And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the [ax]testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you (HB)except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. (HC)I was with you (HD)in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching (HE)were not with persuasive words of [ay]human wisdom, (HF)but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the (HG)power of God.

Spiritual Wisdom

However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God [az]ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for (HH)had they known, they would not have (HI)crucified the Lord of glory.

But as it is written:

(HJ)“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 But (HK)God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the (HL)spirit of the man which is in him? (HM)Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but (HN)the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the [ba]Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 (HO)But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16 For (HP)“who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” (HQ)But we have the mind of Christ.

Sectarianism Is Carnal

And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to (HR)babes in Christ. I fed you with (HS)milk and not with solid food; (HT)for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and [bb]behaving like mere men? For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal?

Watering, Working, Warning

Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but (HU)ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? (HV)I planted, (HW)Apollos watered, (HX)but God gave the increase. So then (HY)neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, (HZ)and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.

For (IA)we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are (IB)God’s building. 10 (IC)According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid (ID)the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than (IE)that which is laid, (IF)which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day (IG)will declare it, because (IH)it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

16 (II)Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone [bc]defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

Avoid Worldly Wisdom

18 (IJ)Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, (IK)“He catches the wise in their own craftiness”; 20 and again, (IL)“The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21 Therefore let no one boast in men. For (IM)all things are yours: 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come—all are yours. 23 And (IN)you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

Stewards of the Mysteries of God

Let a man so consider us, as (IO)servants of Christ (IP)and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human [bd]court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I know of nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. (IQ)Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to (IR)light the hidden things of darkness and (IS)reveal the [be]counsels of the hearts. (IT)Then each one’s praise will come from God.

Fools for Christ’s Sake

Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be [bf]puffed up on behalf of one against the other. For who [bg]makes you differ from another? And (IU)what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

You are already full! (IV)You are already rich! You have reigned as kings without us—and indeed I could wish you did reign, that we also might reign with you! For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a (IW)spectacle [bh]to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are (IX)fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! (IY)We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. 12 (IZ)And we labor, working with our own hands. (JA)Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; 13 being defamed, we [bi]entreat. (JB)We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now.

Paul’s Paternal Care

14 I do not write these things to shame you, but (JC)as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for (JD)in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, (JE)imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent (JF)Timothy to you, (JG)who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will (JH)remind you of my ways in Christ, as I (JI)teach everywhere (JJ)in every church.

18 (JK)Now some are [bj]puffed up, as though I were not coming to you. 19 (JL)But I will come to you shortly, (JM)if the Lord wills, and I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power. 20 For (JN)the kingdom of God is not in word but in (JO)power. 21 What do you want? (JP)Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?

Immorality Defiles the Church

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even [bk]named among the Gentiles—that a man has his father’s (JQ)wife! (JR)And you are [bl]puffed up, and have not rather (JS)mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you. (JT)For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed. In the (JU)name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, (JV)with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, (JW)deliver such a one to (JX)Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord [bm]Jesus.

(JY)Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that (JZ)a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore [bn]purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed (KA)Christ, our (KB)Passover, was sacrificed [bo]for us. Therefore (KC)let us keep the feast, (KD)not with old leaven, nor (KE)with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Immorality Must Be Judged

I wrote to you in my epistle (KF)not to [bp]keep company with sexually immoral people. 10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go (KG)out of the world. 11 But now I have written to you not to keep company (KH)with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—(KI)not even to eat with such a person.

12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? 13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore (KJ)“put away from yourselves the evil person.”

Do Not Sue the Brethren

Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the (KK)saints? Do you not know that (KL)the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Do you not know that we shall (KM)judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life? If then you have [bq]judgments concerning things pertaining to this life, do you appoint those who are least esteemed by the church to judge? I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brethren? But brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers!

Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. (KN)Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated? No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren! Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. (KO)Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [br]homosexuals, nor [bs]sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were (KP)some of you. (KQ)But you were washed, but you were [bt]sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Glorify God in Body and Spirit

12 (KR)All things are lawful for me, but all things are not [bu]helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of [bv]any. 13 (KS)Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for (KT)sexual immorality but (KU)for the Lord, (KV)and the Lord for the body. 14 And (KW)God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up (KX)by His power.

15 Do you not know that (KY)your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For (KZ)“the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” 17 (LA)But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

18 (LB)Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins (LC)against his own body. 19 Or (LD)do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, (LE)and you are not your own? 20 For (LF)you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body [bw]and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Principles of Marriage

Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me:

(LG)It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. (LH)Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. (LI)Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that (LJ)Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But I say this as a concession, (LK)not as a commandment. For (LL)I wish that all men were even as I myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that.

But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: (LM)It is good for them if they remain even as I am; but (LN)if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

Keep Your Marriage Vows

10 Now to the married I command, yet not I but the (LO)Lord: (LP)A wife is not to depart from her husband. 11 But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.

12 But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her. 13 And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise (LQ)your children would be unclean, but now they are holy. 15 But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us (LR)to peace. 16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will (LS)save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?

Live as You Are Called

17 But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one, so let him walk. And (LT)so I [bx]ordain in all the churches. 18 Was anyone called while circumcised? Let him not become uncircumcised. Was anyone called while uncircumcised? (LU)Let him not be circumcised. 19 (LV)Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but (LW)keeping the commandments of God is what matters. 20 Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called. 21 Were you called while a slave? Do not be concerned about it; but if you can be made free, rather use it. 22 For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is (LX)the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who is called while free is (LY)Christ’s slave. 23 (LZ)You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. 24 Brethren, let each one remain with (MA)God in that state in which he was called.

To the Unmarried and Widows

25 Now concerning virgins: (MB)I have no commandment from the Lord; yet I give judgment as one (MC)whom the Lord in His mercy has made (MD)trustworthy. 26 I suppose therefore that this is good because of the present distress—(ME)that it is good for a man to remain as he is: 27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife. 28 But even if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Nevertheless such will have trouble in the flesh, but I would spare you.

29 But (MF)this I say, brethren, the time is short, so that from now on even those who have wives should be as though they had none, 30 those who weep as though they did not weep, those who rejoice as though they did not rejoice, those who buy as though they did not possess, 31 and those who use this world as not (MG)misusing it. For (MH)the form of this world is passing away.

32 But I want you to be without [by]care. (MI)He who is unmarried [bz]cares for the things of the Lord—how he may please the Lord. 33 But he who is married cares about the things of the world—how he may please his wife. 34 There is a difference between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman (MJ)cares about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But she who is married cares about the things of the world—how she may please her husband. 35 And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction.

36 But if any man thinks he is behaving improperly toward his [ca]virgin, if she is past the flower of youth, and thus it must be, let him do what he wishes. He does not sin; let them marry. 37 Nevertheless he who stands steadfast in his heart, having no necessity, but has power over his own will, and has so determined in his heart that he will keep his [cb]virgin, does well. 38 (MK)So then he who gives [cc]her in marriage does well, but he who does not give her in marriage does better.

39 (ML)A wife is bound by law as long as her husband lives; but if her husband dies, she is at liberty to be married to whom she wishes, (MM)only in the Lord. 40 But she is happier if she remains as she is, (MN)according to my judgment—and (MO)I think I also have the Spirit of God.
