Romans 1:1-4

1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle^(A) and set apart^(B) for the gospel of God^(C)— ²the gospel he promised beforehand^(D) through his prophets^(E) in the Holy Scriptures^(F) ³regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life^[a]^(G) was a descendant of David,^(H) ⁴and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power^[b]^(I) by his resurrection from the dead:^(J) Jesus Christ our Lord.^(K)

²²“Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth^(A) was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs,^(B) which God did among you through him,^(C) as you yourselves know. ²³This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge;^(D) and you, with the help of wicked men,^[a] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.^(E) ²⁴But God raised him from the dead,^(F) freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.^(G) ²⁵David said about him:

“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
    Because he is at my right hand,
    I will not be shaken.
²⁶Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest in hope,
²⁷because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
    you will not let your holy one see decay.^(H)
²⁸You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence.’^[b]^(I)

²⁹“Fellow Israelites,^(J) I can tell you confidently that the patriarch^(K) David died and was buried,^(L) and his tomb is here^(M) to this day. ³⁰But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.^(N) ³¹Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.^(O) ³²God has raised this Jesus to life,^(P) and we are all witnesses^(Q) of it. ³³Exalted^(R) to the right hand of God,^(S) he has received from the Father^(T) the promised Holy Spirit^(U) and has poured out^(V) what you now see and hear. ³⁴For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
³⁵until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’^[c]^(W)

³⁶“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord^(X) and Messiah.”^(Y)

⁵In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:^(A)

⁶Who, being in very nature^[a] God,^(B)
    did not consider equality with God^(C) something to be used to his own advantage;
⁷rather, he made himself nothing^(D)
    by taking the very nature^[b] of a servant,^(E)
    being made in human likeness.^(F)
⁸And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death^(G)—
        even death on a cross!^(H)

⁹Therefore God exalted him^(I) to the highest place
    and gave him the name that is above every name,^(J)
¹⁰that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,^(K)
    in heaven and on earth and under the earth,^(L)
¹¹and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,^(M)
    to the glory of God the Father.
