La fe de Abraham

Pero entonces, ¿qué diremos que ganó Abraham, nuestro antepasado? En realidad, si Abraham hubiera sido reconocido como justo a causa de sus propios hechos, tendría razón para gloriarse, aunque no delante de Dios. Pues la Escritura dice: «Abraham creyó a Dios, y por eso Dios le tuvo esto en cuenta y lo reconoció como justo.» Ahora bien, si alguno trabaja, el pago no se le da como un regalo sino como algo merecido. En cambio, si alguno cree en Dios, que hace justo al pecador, Dios le tiene en cuenta su fe para reconocerlo como justo, aunque no haya hecho nada que merezca su favor. David mismo habló de la dicha de aquel a quien Dios reconoce como justo sin tomarle en cuenta sus hechos. Dijo David:

«¡Dichosos aquellos a quienes Dios perdona sus maldades y pasa por alto sus pecados!
¡Dichoso el hombre a quien el Señor no toma en cuenta su pecado!»

¿Será que esta dicha corresponde solamente a los que están circuncidados, o corresponderá también a los que no lo están? Hemos dicho que Dios tuvo en cuenta la fe de Abraham para reconocerlo como justo. 10 Pero ¿cuándo se la tuvo en cuenta? ¿Después de que Abraham fue circuncidado, o antes? No después, sino antes. 11 Y después Abraham fue circuncidado, como señal o sello de que Dios ya lo había reconocido como justo por causa de su fe. De este modo, Abraham ha venido a ser también el padre de todos los que tienen fe, aunque no hayan sido circuncidados; y así Dios los reconoce igualmente a ellos como justos. 12 Y Abraham es también el padre de quienes, además de estar circuncidados, siguen el ejemplo de aquella fe que nuestro antepasado ya tenía cuando aún no estaba circuncidado.

La promesa para sus descendientes

13 Pues Dios prometió a Abraham y a sus descendientes que recibirían el mundo como herencia; pero esta promesa no estaba condicionada al cumplimiento de la ley, sino a la justicia que se basa en la fe. 14 Pues si los que han de recibir la herencia son los que se basan en la ley, entonces la fe resultaría cosa inútil y la promesa de Dios perdería su valor. 15 Porque la ley trae castigo; pero donde no hay ley, tampoco hay faltas contra la ley.

16 Por eso, para que la promesa hecha a Abraham conservara su valor para todos sus descendientes, fue un don gratuito, basado en la fe. Es decir, la promesa no es solamente para los que se basan en la ley, sino también para todos los que se basan en la fe, como Abraham. De esa manera, él viene a ser padre de todos nosotros, 17 como dice la Escritura: «Te he hecho padre de muchas naciones.» Éste es el Dios en quien Abraham creyó, el Dios que da vida a los muertos y crea las cosas que aún no existen.

18 Cuando ya no había esperanza, Abraham creyó y tuvo esperanza, y así vino a ser «padre de muchas naciones», conforme a lo que Dios le había dicho: «Así será el número de tus descendientes.» 19 La fe de Abraham no se debilitó, aunque ya tenía casi cien años de edad y se daba cuenta de que tanto él como Sara ya estaban casi muertos, y que eran demasiado viejos para tener hijos. 20 No dudó ni desconfió de la promesa de Dios, sino que tuvo una fe más fuerte. Alabó a Dios, 21 plenamente convencido de que Dios tiene poder para cumplir lo que promete. 22 Por eso, Dios le tuvo esto en cuenta y lo reconoció como justo.

23 Y esto de que Dios se lo tuvo en cuenta, no se escribió solamente de Abraham; 24 se escribió también de nosotros. Pues Dios también nos tiene en cuenta la fe, si creemos en aquel que resucitó a Jesús, nuestro Señor, 25 que fue entregado a la muerte por nuestros pecados y resucitado para hacernos justos.

The Example of Abraham

So what can we say that Abraham,[a] the father of our people, learned about faith? If Abraham was made right by the things he did, he had a reason to brag. But this is not God’s view, because the Scripture says, “Abraham believed God, and God accepted Abraham’s faith, and that faith made him right with God.”[b]

When people work, their pay is not given as a gift, but as something earned. But people cannot do any work that will make them right with God. So they must trust in him, who makes even evil people right in his sight. Then God accepts their faith, and that makes them right with him. David said the same thing. He said that people are truly blessed when God, without paying attention to their deeds, makes people right with himself.

“Blessed are they
    whose sins are forgiven,
    whose wrongs are pardoned.
Blessed is the person
    whom the Lord does not consider guilty.” Psalm 32:1–2

Is this blessing only for those who are circumcised or also for those who are not circumcised? We have already said that God accepted Abraham’s faith and that faith made him right with God. 10 So how did this happen? Did God accept Abraham before or after he was circumcised? It was before his circumcision. 11 Abraham was circumcised to show that he was right with God through faith before he was circumcised. So Abraham is the father of all those who believe but are not circumcised; he is the father of all believers who are accepted as being right with God. 12 And Abraham is also the father of those who have been circumcised and who live following the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

God Keeps His Promise

13 Abraham[c] and his descendants received the promise that they would get the whole world. He did not receive that promise through the law, but through being right with God by his faith. 14 If people could receive what God promised by following the law, then faith is worthless. And God’s promise to Abraham is worthless, 15 because the law can only bring God’s anger. But if there is no law, there is nothing to disobey.

16 So people receive God’s promise by having faith. This happens so the promise can be a free gift. Then all of Abraham’s children can have that promise. It is not only for those who live under the law of Moses but for anyone who lives with faith like that of Abraham, who is the father of us all. 17 As it is written in the Scriptures: “I am making you a father of many nations.”[d] This is true before God, the God Abraham believed, the God who gives life to the dead and who creates something out of nothing.

18 There was no hope that Abraham would have children. But Abraham believed God and continued hoping, and so he became the father of many nations. As God told him, “Your descendants also will be too many to count.”[e] 19 Abraham was almost a hundred years old, much past the age for having children, and Sarah could not have children. Abraham thought about all this, but his faith in God did not become weak. 20 He never doubted that God would keep his promise, and he never stopped believing. He grew stronger in his faith and gave praise to God. 21 Abraham felt sure that God was able to do what he had promised. 22 So, “God accepted Abraham’s faith, and that faith made him right with God.”[f] 23 Those words (“God accepted Abraham’s faith”) were written not only for Abraham 24 but also for us. God will accept us also because we believe in the One who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 Jesus was given to die for our sins, and he was raised from the dead to make us right with God.

What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.

10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.

16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:

20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;

24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Abraham Justified by Faith(A)

What then shall we say that (B)Abraham our (C)father[a] has found according to the flesh? For if Abraham was (D)justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? (E)“Abraham believed God, and it was [b]accounted to him for righteousness.” Now (F)to him who works, the wages are not counted [c]as grace but as debt.

David Celebrates the Same Truth

But to him who (G)does not work but believes on Him who justifies (H)the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, just as David also (I)describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works:

“Blessed(J) are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
And whose sins are covered;
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.”

Abraham Justified Before Circumcision

Does this blessedness then come upon the circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness. 10 How then was it accounted? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised. 11 And (K)he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that (L)he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father (M)Abraham had while still uncircumcised.

The Promise Granted Through Faith

13 For the promise that he would be the (N)heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For (O)if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, 15 because (P)the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.

16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be (Q)according to grace, (R)so that the promise might be [d]sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, (S)who is the father of us all 17 (as it is written, (T)“I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, (U)who gives life to the dead and calls those (V)things which do not exist as though they did; 18 who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, (W)“So shall your descendants be.” 19 And not being weak in faith, (X)he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), (Y)and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. 20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised (Z)He was also able to perform. 22 And therefore (AA)“it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

23 Now (AB)it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, 24 but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe (AC)in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 (AD)who was delivered up because of our offenses, and (AE)was raised because of our justification.
