El cristiano y la autoridad civil
13 Todos deben acatar la autoridad que preside, pues toda autoridad procede de Dios y las autoridades que existen han sido establecidas por él. 2 Por tanto, los que se oponen a la autoridad se rebelan contra lo que Dios ha dispuesto y recibirán su merecido.
3 Los gobernantes, en efecto, no están para intimidar a los buenos, sino a los malos. ¿Aspiras a no tener miedo de la autoridad? Pues pórtate bien, y sólo elogios recibirás de ella, 4 ya que está al servicio de Dios para hacer el bien. Pero, si te portas mal, teme lo peor, pues no en vano está dotada de poderes eficaces al servicio de Dios para castigar severamente a los que hacen el mal. 5 Es preciso, por tanto, que acatéis la autoridad, y no sólo por miedo al castigo, sino como un deber de conciencia. 6 Dígase lo mismo de los impuestos que pagáis; quienes os los exigen son como representantes de Dios, dedicados precisamente a ese cometido. 7 Dad a cada uno lo que le corresponda, lo mismo si se trata de impuestos que de contribuciones, de respeto que de honores.
Invitación al amor y a la buena conducta
8 Si con alguno tenéis deudas, que sean de amor, pues quien ama al prójimo ha cumplido la ley. 9 Porque el no cometerás adulterio, no matarás, no robarás, no codiciarás y cualquier otro posible mandamiento se resume en estas palabras: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. 10 El que ama no hace daño al prójimo; o sea, que el amor constituye la plenitud de la ley.
11 Conocéis, además, el momento especial en que vivimos: que ya es hora de despertar del sueño, pues nuestra salvación está ahora más cerca de nosotros que cuando empezamos a creer. 12 La noche está avanzada, el día a punto de llegar. Así que renunciemos a las obras de las tinieblas y equipémonos con las armas de la luz. 13 Comportémonos con el decoro de quien vive en pleno día: nada de orgías ni borracheras, nada de lujuria ni desenfreno, nada de contiendas ni envidias. 14 Al contrario, revestíos de Jesucristo, el Señor, y no fomentéis las desordenadas apetencias de la humana naturaleza.
Romans 13

13 Let every soul to the higher authorities be subject, for there is no authority except from God, and the authorities existing are appointed by God,
2 so that he who is setting himself against the authority, against God's ordinance hath resisted; and those resisting, to themselves shall receive judgment.
3 For those ruling are not a terror to the good works, but to the evil; and dost thou wish not to be afraid of the authority? that which is good be doing, and thou shalt have praise from it,
4 for of God it is a ministrant to thee for good; and if that which is evil thou mayest do, be fearing, for not in vain doth it bear the sword; for of God it is a ministrant, an avenger for wrath to him who is doing that which is evil.
5 Wherefore it is necessary to be subject, not only because of the wrath, but also because of the conscience,
6 for because of this also pay ye tribute; for servants of God they are, on this very thing attending continually;
7 render, therefore, to all [their] dues; to whom tribute, the tribute; to whom custom, the custom; to whom fear, the fear; to whom honour, the honour.
8 To no one owe anything, except to love one another; for he who is loving the other -- law he hath fulfilled,
9 for, `Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false testimony, Thou shalt not covet;' and if there is any other command, in this word it is summed up, in this: `Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself;'
10 the love to the neighbor doth work no ill; the love, therefore, [is] the fulness of law.
11 And this, knowing the time, that for us, the hour already [is] to be aroused out of sleep, for now nearer [is] our salvation than when we did believe;
12 the night did advance, and the day came nigh; let us lay aside, therefore, the works of the darkness, and let us put on the armour of the light;
13 as in day-time, let us walk becomingly; not in revellings and drunkennesses, not in chamberings and lasciviousnesses, not in strife and emulation;
14 but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and for the flesh take no forethought -- for desires.

13 Omnis anima potestatibus sublimioribus subdita sit: non est enim potestas nisi a Deo: quae autem sunt, a Deo ordinatae sunt.
2 Itaque qui resistit potestati, Dei ordinationi resistit. Qui autem resistunt, ipsi sibi damnationem acquirunt:
3 nam principes non sunt timori boni operis, sed mali. Vis autem non timere potestatem? Bonum fac: et habebis laudem ex illa:
4 Dei enim minister est tibi in bonum. Si autem malum feceris, time: non enim sine causa gladium portat. Dei enim minister est: vindex in iram ei qui malum agit.
5 Ideo necessitate subditi estote non solum propter iram, sed etiam propter conscientiam.
6 Ideo enim et tributa praestatis: ministri enim Dei sunt, in hoc ipsum servientes.
7 Reddite ergo omnibus debita: cui tributum, tributum: cui vectigal, vectigal: cui timorem, timorem: cui honorem, honorem.
8 Nemini quidquam debeatis, nisi ut invicem diligatis: qui enim diligit proximum, legem implevit.
9 Nam: Non adulterabis: non occides: non furaberis: non falsum testimonium dices: non concupisces: et si quod est aliud mandatum, in hoc verbo instauratur: diliges proximum tuum sicut teipsum.
10 Dilectio proximi malum non operatur. Plenitudo ergo legis est dilectio.
11 Et hoc scientes tempus: quia hora est jam nos de somno surgere. Nunc enim propior est nostra salus, quam cum credidimus.
12 Nox praecessit, dies autem appropinquavit. Abjiciamus ergo opera tenebrarum, et induamur arma lucis.
13 Sicut in die honeste ambulemus: non in comessationibus, et ebrietatibus, non in cubilibus, et impudicitiis, non in contentione, et aemulatione:
14 sed induimini Dominum Jesum Christum, et carnis curam ne feceritis in desideriis.
