4 Ce vom zice dar că a căpătat, prin puterea lui, strămoşul nostru Avraam(A)? 2 Dacă Avraam a fost socotit neprihănit(B) prin fapte, are cu ce să se laude, dar nu înaintea lui Dumnezeu. 3 Căci ce zice Scriptura? „Avraam(C) a crezut pe Dumnezeu, şi aceasta i s-a socotit ca neprihănire.” 4 Însă, celui(D) ce lucrează, plata cuvenită lui i se socoteşte nu ca un har, ci ca ceva datorat; 5 pe când celui ce nu lucrează, ci crede în Cel ce socoteşte pe păcătos neprihănit(E), credinţa pe care o are el îi este socotită ca neprihănire. 6 Tot astfel şi David numeşte fericit pe omul acela pe care Dumnezeu, fără fapte, îl socoteşte neprihănit. 7 „Ferice(F)”, zice el, „de aceia ale căror fărădelegi sunt iertate şi ale căror păcate sunt acoperite! 8 Ferice de omul căruia nu-i ţine Domnul în seamă păcatul!” 9 Fericirea aceasta este numai pentru cei tăiaţi împrejur sau şi pentru cei netăiaţi împrejur? Căci zicem că lui Avraam credinţa „i-a fost socotită ca neprihănire.” 10 Dar cum i-a fost socotită? După sau înainte de tăierea lui împrejur? Nu când era tăiat împrejur, ci când era netăiat împrejur. 11 Apoi, a(G) primit ca semn tăierea împrejur, ca o pecete a acelei neprihăniri pe care o căpătase prin credinţă, când era netăiat împrejur. Şi aceasta, pentru ca să(H) fie tatăl tuturor celor care cred, măcar că nu sunt tăiaţi împrejur; ca, adică, să li se socotească şi lor neprihănirea aceasta 12 şi pentru ca să fie şi tatăl celor tăiaţi împrejur, adică al acelora care nu numai că sunt tăiaţi împrejur, dar şi calcă pe urmele credinţei aceleia pe care o avea tatăl nostru Avraam, când nu era tăiat împrejur.
Moştenirea vine prin credinţă
13 În adevăr, făgăduinţa făcută lui Avraam sau seminţei lui, că va moşteni(I) lumea, n-a fost făcută pe temeiul Legii, ci pe temeiul acelei neprihăniri care se capătă prin credinţă. 14 Căci(J), dacă moştenitori sunt cei ce se ţin de Lege, credinţa este zadarnică şi făgăduinţa este nimicită, 15 pentru că Legea(K) aduce mânie, şi unde nu este o lege, acolo nu este nici călcare de lege. 16 De aceea, moştenitori sunt cei ce se fac prin credinţă, pentru ca să fie prin har(L), şi pentru ca(M) făgăduinţa să fie chezăşuită pentru toată sămânţa lui Avraam: nu numai pentru sămânţa aceea care este sub Lege, ci şi pentru sămânţa aceea care(N) are credinţa lui Avraam, tatăl nostru al tuturor, 17 după cum este scris: „Te-am(O) rânduit să fii tatăl multor neamuri”. El, adică, este tatăl nostru înaintea lui Dumnezeu în care a crezut, care(P) învie morţii şi care cheamă lucrurile(Q) care nu sunt, ca şi cum ar fi. 18 Nădăjduind împotriva oricărei nădejdi, el a crezut şi astfel a ajuns tatăl multor neamuri, după cum i se spusese: „Aşa(R) va fi sămânţa ta”. 19 Şi, fiindcă n-a fost slab în credinţă, el nu s-a(S) uitat la trupul său, care era îmbătrânit – avea aproape o sută de ani – nici la faptul că Sara nu mai putea să aibă copii. 20 El nu s-a îndoit de făgăduinţa lui Dumnezeu, prin necredinţă, ci, întărit prin credinţa lui, a dat slavă lui Dumnezeu, 21 deplin încredinţat că El ce făgăduieşte poate(T) să şi împlinească. 22 De aceea, credinţa aceasta „i-a fost socotită ca neprihănire.” 23 Dar nu(U) numai pentru el este scris că „i-a fost socotită ca neprihănire”, 24 ci este scris şi pentru noi, cărora, de asemenea, ne va fi socotită, nouă celor ce credem în Cel(V) ce a înviat din morţi pe Isus Hristos, Domnul nostru, 25 care(W) a fost dat din pricina fărădelegilor noastre şi a înviat(X) din pricină că am fost socotiţi neprihăniţi.

4 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

El ejemplo de Abraham
4 Pensemos en lo que le pasó a Abraham, nuestro antepasado. 2 Si Dios lo hubiera aceptado por todo lo que hizo, entonces podría sentirse orgulloso ante nosotros. Pero ante Dios no podía sentirse orgulloso de nada. 3 La Biblia dice:
«Dios aceptó a Abraham
porque Abraham confió en Dios.»
4 Ahora bien, el dinero que se le paga a alguien por un trabajo no es ningún regalo, sino algo que se le debe. 5 En cambio, Dios declara inocente al pecador, aunque el pecador no haya hecho nada para merecerlo, porque Dios le toma en cuenta su confianza en él. 6 David nos habla de la felicidad de aquellos a los que, sin hacer nada para merecerlo, Dios declara inocentes por confiar en él. Ya dijimos que Dios aceptó a Abraham, porque él confió en Dios. 10 Y no hay duda de que Dios aceptó a Abraham antes de que fuera circuncidado. 11 En realidad, Abraham fue circuncidado para demostrar que Dios ya lo había aceptado por confiar en él. Fue así como Abraham se convirtió en el padre de todos los que confían en Dios, aunque no estén circuncidados. 12 Pero Abraham es también el padre de los que están circuncidados, y que a la vez confían en Dios, pues con esto siguen el ejemplo de Abraham antes de que fuera circuncidado.
Promesa a los que confían en Dios
13 Dios le prometió a Abraham que a él y a sus descendientes les daría el mundo. Se lo prometió, no porque Abraham hubiera obedecido la ley, sino porque confió en Dios; esto hizo que Dios lo aceptara. 14 Si la promesa de Dios fuera para los que obedecen la ley, entonces de nada serviría confiar en Dios, y su promesa no valdría de nada.
15 Dios castiga a los que desobedecen la ley; pero cuando no hay ley, nadie es culpable de desobedecerla. 16 Por eso, para que la promesa de Dios tuviera valor para los descendientes de Abraham, Dios no pidió nada a cambio. Hizo la promesa para todos los que confiaran en él. No sólo para los que obedecen la ley, sino también para los que confían como Abraham. Por eso Abraham es el padre de todos nosotros. 17 En la Biblia, Dios le dijo a Abraham que llegaría a ser el antepasado de gente de muchos países. Esta promesa se la hizo Dios a Abraham porque Abraham creyó en él, que es el único Dios con poder para resucitar a los muertos y para crear cosas nuevas.
18 Cuando Dios le prometió a Abraham que tendría muchísimos descendientes, esto parecía imposible. Sin embargo, por su esperanza y confianza en Dios, Abraham llegó a ser el antepasado de gente de muchos países que también confían en Dios. 19 Aunque Abraham tenía casi cien años, y sabía que pronto moriría, nunca dejó de confiar en Dios. Y aunque sabía que su esposa Sara no podía tener hijos, 20 nunca dudó de que Dios cumpliría su promesa. Al contrario, su confianza era cada vez más firme, y daba gracias a Dios.
21 Abraham estaba completamente seguro de que Dios tenía poder para cumplir su promesa. 22 Por eso Dios lo aceptó. 23 Y cuando la Biblia dice que Dios aceptó a Abraham, no se refiere sólo a él 24 sino también a nosotros. Dios es el mismo que resucitó a Jesús nuestro Señor, y nos acepta si confiamos en él. 25 Dios entregó a Jesús para que muriera por nuestros pecados, y lo resucitó para que fuéramos declarados inocentes.

Abraham Justified by Faith
4 What then shall we say(A) that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh,(B) discovered in this matter? 2 If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God.(C) 3 What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[a](D)
4 Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift(E) but as an obligation. 5 However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.(F) 6 David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
7 “Blessed are those
whose transgressions are forgiven,
whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the one
whose sin the Lord will never count against them.”[b](G)
9 Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised?(H) We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness.(I) 10 Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before! 11 And he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised.(J) So then, he is the father(K) of all who believe(L) but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. 12 And he is then also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
13 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise(M) that he would be heir of the world,(N) but through the righteousness that comes by faith.(O) 14 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless,(P) 15 because the law brings wrath.(Q) And where there is no law there is no transgression.(R)
16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace(S) and may be guaranteed(T) to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.(U) 17 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.”[c](V) He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life(W) to the dead and calls(X) into being things that were not.(Y)
18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations,(Z) just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”[d](AA) 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead(AB)—since he was about a hundred years old(AC)—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead.(AD) 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened(AE) in his faith and gave glory to God,(AF) 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.(AG) 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”(AH) 23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us,(AI) to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him(AJ) who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.(AK) 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins(AL) and was raised to life for our justification.(AM)
