³ So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress.^(A) But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.

³² But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.^(A)

⁶ “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’^{[a](A) 7} ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,^{[b] 8} and the two will become one flesh.’^[c](B) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. ⁹ Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

¹⁰ When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. ¹¹ He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.^{(C) 12} And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”^(D)

¹¹ As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. ¹² Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. ¹³ Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies^(A) who talk nonsense,^(B) saying things they ought not to. ¹⁴ So I counsel younger widows to marry,^(C) to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander.^(D)

³ The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group ⁴ and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. ⁵ In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.^(A) Now what do you say?”

²² If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept^(A) with her and the woman must die.^(B) You must purge the evil from Israel.

²³ If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, ²⁴ you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.^(C)

¹⁰ “‘If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife^(A)—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death.^(B)

³⁹ When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Praise be to the Lord, who has upheld my cause against Nabal for treating me with contempt. He has kept his servant from doing wrong and has brought Nabal’s wrongdoing down on his own head.”

Then David sent word to Abigail, asking her to become his wife. ⁴⁰ His servants went to Carmel and said to Abigail, “David has sent us to you to take you to become his wife.”

⁴¹ She bowed down with her face to the ground and said, “I am your servant and am ready to serve you and wash the feet of my lord’s servants.” ⁴² Abigail^(A) quickly got on a donkey and, attended by her five female servants, went with David’s messengers and became his wife.
