¹² All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law^(A) will be judged by the law.

²¹ To those not having the law I became like one not having the law^(A) (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law),^(B) so as to win those not having the law.

¹⁰ For all who rely on the works of the law^(A) are under a curse,^(B) as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”^[a](C)

¹⁴ (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law,^(A) they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. ¹⁵ They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) ¹⁶ This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets^(B) through Jesus Christ,^(C) as my gospel^(D) declares.

¹⁶ know that a person is not justified by the works of the law,^(A) but by faith in Jesus Christ.^(B) So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in^[a] Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.^(C)

¹⁷ “But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners,^(D) doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not!^{(E) 18} If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker.

¹⁹ “For through the law I died to the law^(F) so that I might live for God.^(G)

The Greater Glory of the New Covenant

⁷ Now if the ministry that brought death,^(A) which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory,^(B) transitory though it was, ⁸ will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? ⁹ If the ministry that brought condemnation^(C) was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!^(D)

The Law and Sin

⁷ What shall we say, then?^(A) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!^(B) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.^(C) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”^{[a](D) 8} But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,^(E) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.^{(F) 9} Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. ¹⁰ I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life^(G) actually brought death. ¹¹ For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,^(H) deceived me,^(I) and through the commandment put me to death.

³⁰ In the past God overlooked^(A) such ignorance,^(B) but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.^{(C) 31} For he has set a day when he will judge^(D) the world with justice^(E) by the man he has appointed.^(F) He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”^(G)

⁴⁹ “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom:^(A) She and her daughters were arrogant,^(B) overfed and unconcerned;^(C) they did not help the poor and needy.^{(D) 50} They were haughty^(E) and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.^(F)
