⁷ What then? ^(A)Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest ^(B)were hardened,

⁴ In their case ^(A)the god of this world ^(B)has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing ^(C)the light of ^(D)the gospel of the glory of Christ, ^(E)who is the image of God.

¹⁸ So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.

The Mystery of Israel's Salvation

^25 (A)Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers:^{[a] (B)}a partial hardening has come upon Israel, ^(C)until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

⁵ So too at the present time there is ^(A)a remnant, chosen by grace.

¹⁰ and with all wicked deception for ^(A)those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. ¹¹ Therefore ^(B)God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe ^(C)what is false, ¹² in order that all may be condemned ^(D)who did not believe the truth but ^(E)had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Stand Firm

¹³ But ^(F)we ought always to give thanks to God for you, ^(G)brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you ^(H)as the firstfruits^{[a] (I)}to be saved, ^(J)through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. ¹⁴ To this he called you through ^(K)our gospel, ^(L)so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

³¹ but that Israel ^(A)who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness^{[a] (B)}did not succeed in reaching that law. ³² Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the ^(C)stumbling stone,

^4 (A)even as he ^(B)chose us in him ^(C)before the foundation of the world, that we should be ^(D)holy and blameless before him. In love

¹⁴ But ^(A)their minds were ^(B)hardened. For to this day, ^(C)when they read ^(D)the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away.
