11 You rulers make decisions based on bribes;
you priests teach God’s laws only for a price;
you prophets won’t prophesy unless you are paid.
Yet all of you claim to depend on the Lord.
“No harm can come to us,” you say,
“for the Lord is here among us.”

God’s Stubborn People
48 “Listen to me, O family of Jacob,
you who are called by the name of Israel
and born into the family of Judah.
Listen, you who take oaths in the name of the Lord
and call on the God of Israel.
You don’t keep your promises,

and talk about depending on the God of Israel,
whose name is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Stubborn Israel
48 “Listen to this, you descendants of Jacob,
you who are called by the name of Israel(A)
and come from the line of Judah,(B)
you who take oaths(C) in the name of the Lord(D)
and invoke(E) the God of Israel—
but not in truth(F) or righteousness—
2 you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city(G)
and claim to rely(H) on the God of Israel—
the Lord Almighty is his name:(I)
Romans 9:4-7
New Living Translation
4 They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God’s adopted children.[a] God revealed his glory to them. He made covenants with them and gave them his law. He gave them the privilege of worshiping him and receiving his wonderful promises. 5 Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are their ancestors, and Christ himself was an Israelite as far as his human nature is concerned. And he is God, the one who rules over everything and is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.[b]
6 Well then, has God failed to fulfill his promise to Israel? No, for not all who are born into the nation of Israel are truly members of God’s people! 7 Being descendants of Abraham doesn’t make them truly Abraham’s children. For the Scriptures say, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted,”[c] though Abraham had other children, too.

God’s Sovereign Choice
6 It is not as though God’s word(L) had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.(M) 7 Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”[b](N)

Philippians 3:3-7
New Living Translation
3 For we who worship by the Spirit of God[a] are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort, 4 though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more!
5 I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin—a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law. 6 I was so zealous that I harshly persecuted the church. And as for righteousness, I obeyed the law without fault.
7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done.

3 For it is we who are the circumcision,(A) we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus,(B) and who put no confidence in the flesh— 4 though I myself have reasons for such confidence.(C)
If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised(D) on the eighth day, of the people of Israel,(E) of the tribe of Benjamin,(F) a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee;(G) 6 as for zeal,(H) persecuting the church;(I) as for righteousness based on the law,(J) faultless.
7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss(K) for the sake of Christ.
