Israël en de andere volken

3 De Heer had een aantal volken in het land laten overblijven. Door hen wilde Hij de Israëlieten testen die de verovering van Kanaän niet zelf hadden meegemaakt. 2 Zij hadden zelf nog geen ervaring met oorlogvoeren. Daarom wilde Hij dat ze van Hem zouden leren strijden. 3 De volgende volken waren er nog: de vijf stadskoningen van de Filistijnen,[a] alle Kanaänieten, de Sidoniërs en de Hevieten. De Hevieten woonden in de bergen van de Libanon, vanaf de berg Baäl-Hermon tot aan de weg naar Hamat. 4 Met deze volken wilde God de Israëlieten testen. Hij wilde weten of ze gehoorzaam zouden zijn aan de wetten en leefregels die de Heer door Mozes aan hun voorouders had gegeven.

Otniël

5 Zo woonden de Israëlieten tussen de Kanaänieten, Hetieten, Amorieten, Perezieten, Hevieten en Jebusieten. 6 Ze trouwden met hun zonen en dochters en aanbaden hun goden. 7 Ze leefden niet meer zoals de Heer het wilde. Ze vergaten hun Heer God helemaal en aanbaden Baäl en heilige palen. 8 Toen werd de Heer vreselijk boos op Israël. Voor straf gaf Hij hen in de macht van koning Kuschan-Rischataïm van Mesopotamië. De Israëlieten dienden hem acht jaar lang. 9 Toen begonnen ze de Heer om hulp te roepen. De Heer gaf hun een man die hen moest bevrijden. Dat was Kalebs jongere broer Otniël, de zoon van Kenaz. 10 De Geest van de Heer kwam op hem. Hij werd leider van Israël en begon een opstand tegen Kushan-Rischataïm. De Heer zorgde ervoor dat hij koning Kushan-Rischataïm overwon. 11 Daarna had het land 40 jaar vrede. Toen stierf Otniël.

Ehud

12 De Israëlieten werden opnieuw ongehoorzaam aan de Heer. Ze leefden niet meer zoals de Heer het wilde. Daarom zorgde de Heer ervoor dat koning Eglon van Moab sterker werd dan Israël. 13 Eglon sloot een verbond met de Ammonieten en de Amalekieten, viel samen met hen Israël aan en versloeg het. Ze veroverden de Palmstad (= Jericho). 14 De Israëlieten dienden 18 jaar lang koning Eglon. 15 Toen begonnen ze de Heer om hulp te roepen. En de Heer gaf hun een man die hen moest bevrijden. Dat was Ehud, de zoon van Gera, uit de stam van Benjamin. Hij was linkshandig.

De Israëlieten stuurden hem naar koning Eglon van Moab in Jericho. Hij ging hem hun belasting brengen. 16 Ehud maakte een kort, scherp zwaard van 1 el (45 cm) lang en verborg dat onder zijn kleren, op zijn rechterheup. 17 Zo bracht hij de belasting naar koning Eglon. Koning Eglon was erg dik.

18 Toen Ehud de belasting had afgegeven, ging hij met zijn mannen terug. 19 Maar bij de godenbeelden[b] van Gilgal ging hij alleen terug naar koning Eglon. Hij zei tegen hem: "Ik heb een geheime boodschap voor u, mijn heer de koning!" Toen zei de koning: "Zwijg. Laat eerst iedereen weggaan!" Iedereen verliet de zaal. 20 De koning bleef alleen achter in de koele bovenkamer. Ehud ging naar binnen en zei: "Ik heb een boodschap van God voor u." De koning ging staan. 21 Ehud greep met zijn linkerhand het zwaard van zijn rechterheup en stak het in de buik van de koning. 22 Het ging zó diep, dat zelfs de handgreep in de buik verdween. Het zwaard werd helemaal ingesloten door het vet. De inhoud van de darmen kwam naar buiten. Ehud liet het zwaard in de buik zitten. 23 Toen deed Ehud de deur van de zaal op slot. Daarna vertrok hij door een achterdeur.

24 Toen hij vertrokken was, wilden de dienaren weer binnen komen. Maar ze merkten dat de deur van de kamer op slot was. Ze zeiden tegen elkaar: "De koning zit zeker op de wc." 25 Na een lange tijd wachten begonnen ze het vreemd te vinden dat de koning nog steeds de deur niet open deed. Tenslotte haalden ze een sleutel, deden de deur open en zagen hun heer dood op de grond liggen. 26 Maar doordat ze zo lang hadden gewacht, kon Ehud intussen wegkomen. Hij bereikte de godenbeelden bij Gilgal en kwam veilig in Seïrat. 27 Toen hij daar was aangekomen, liet hij op de bergen van Efraïm op de ramshoorn blazen. De Israëlieten kwamen uit de bergen naar hem toe. 28 Hij zei tegen hen: "Volg mij! De Heer heeft jullie vijanden, de Moabieten, in jullie macht gegeven." Ze daalden met Ehud voorop de bergen af tot aan de Jordaan. Daar bezetten ze de ondiepe plaatsen waar je de Jordaan kon oversteken. Ze zorgden ervoor dat geen enkele Moabiet kon oversteken om naar zijn land terug te vluchten. 29 Die dag doodden ze ongeveer 10.000 Moabieten, allemaal gezonde, sterke mannen. Niemand ontsnapte. 30 Zo werd Moab op die dag door Israël verslagen. Daarna had het land 80 jaar lang vrede.

Samgar

31 De volgende leider was Samgar, de zoon van Anat. Hij doodde 600 Filistijnen met een ossenstok.[c] Zo bevrijdde hij Israël van de Filistijnen.

3 Now these are the nations which the Lord left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

2 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

3 Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

4 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:

6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgat the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves.

8 Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.

9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

10 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the Lord delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

12 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord.

13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

16 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

17 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.

18 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.

19 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

22 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

23 Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.

24 When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.

25 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.

27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

28 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the Lord hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

29 And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.

30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

The Nations Remaining in the Land

3 Now these are (A)the nations which the Lord left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not [a]known any of the wars in Canaan 2 (this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at least those who had not formerly known it), 3 namely, (B)five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. 4 And they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to [b]know whether they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

5 (C)Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6 And (D)they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods.

Othniel

7 So the children of Israel did (E)evil in the sight of the Lord. They (F)forgot the Lord their God, and served the Baals and [c]Asherahs. 8 Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and He (G)sold them into the hand of (H)Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years. 9 When the children of Israel (I)cried out to the Lord, the Lord (J)raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: (K)Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 (L)The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. By him the children of Israel sent tribute to Eglon king of Moab. 16 Now Ehud made himself a dagger (it was double-edged and a cubit in length) and fastened it under his clothes on his right thigh. 17 So he brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. (Now Eglon was a very fat man.) 18 And when he had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who had carried the tribute. 19 But he himself turned back (T)from the [e]stone images that were at Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.”

He said, “Keep silence!” And all who attended him went out from him.

20 So Ehud came to him (now he was sitting upstairs in his cool private chamber). Then Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” So he arose from his seat. 21 Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. 22 Even the [f]hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the dagger out of his belly; and his entrails came out. 23 Then Ehud went out through the porch and shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.

24 When he had gone out, [g]Eglon’s servants came to look, and to their surprise, the doors of the upper room were locked. So they said, “He is probably (U)attending[h] to his needs in the cool chamber.” 25 So they waited till they were (V)embarrassed, and still he had not opened the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them. And there was their master, fallen dead on the floor.

26 But Ehud had escaped while they delayed, and passed beyond the [i]stone images and escaped to Seirah. 27 And it happened, when he arrived, that (W)he blew the trumpet in the (X)mountains of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountains; and [j]he led them. 28 Then he said to them, “Follow me, for (Y)the Lord has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him, seized the (Z)fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over. 29 And at that time they killed about ten thousand men of Moab, all stout men of valor; not a man escaped. 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. 31 After him was (AB)Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred men of the Philistines (AC)with an ox goad; (AD)and he also delivered (AE)Israel.

3 These are the nations the Lord left to test(A) all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan 2 (he did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites who had not had previous battle experience): 3 the five(B) rulers of the Philistines,(C) all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites(D) living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal Hermon(E) to Lebo Hamath.(F) 4 They were left to test(G) the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.

5 The Israelites lived(H) among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites,(I) Hivites and Jebusites.(J) 6 They took their daughters(K) in marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.(L)

Othniel

7 The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord; they forgot the Lord(M) their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.(N) 8 The anger of the Lord burned against Israel so that he sold(O) them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim(P) king of Aram Naharaim,[a](Q) to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years. 9 But when they cried out(R) to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer,(S) Othniel(T) son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, who saved them. 10 The Spirit of the Lord came on him,(U) so that he became Israel’s judge[b] and went to war. The Lord gave Cushan-Rishathaim(V) king of Aram(W) into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him. 11 So the land had peace(X) for forty years,(Y) until Othniel son of Kenaz(Z) died.

12 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord,(AA) and because they did this evil the Lord gave Eglon king of Moab(AB) power over Israel. 13 Getting the Ammonites(AC) and Amalekites(AD) to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms.[c](AE) 14 The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab(AF) for eighteen years.

15 Again the Israelites cried out to the Lord, and he gave them a deliverer(AG)—Ehud(AH), a left-handed(AI) man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute(AJ) to Eglon king of Moab. 16 Now Ehud(AK) had made a double-edged sword about a cubit[d] long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing. 17 He presented the tribute(AL) to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man.(AM) 18 After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way those who had carried it. 19 But on reaching the stone images near Gilgal he himself went back to Eglon and said, “Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you.”

The king said to his attendants, “Leave us!” And they all left.

20 Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his palace[e](AN) and said, “I have a message from God for you.” As the king rose(AO) from his seat, 21 Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword(AP) from his right thigh and plunged it into the king’s belly. 22 Even the handle sank in after the blade, and his bowels discharged. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it. 23 Then Ehud went out to the porch[f]; he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.

24 After he had gone, the servants came and found the doors of the upper room locked. They said, “He must be relieving himself(AQ) in the inner room of the palace.” 25 They waited to the point of embarrassment,(AR) but when he did not open the doors of the room, they took a key and unlocked them. There they saw their lord fallen to the floor, dead.

26 While they waited, Ehud got away. He passed by the stone images and escaped to Seirah. 27 When he arrived there, he blew a trumpet(AS) in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him leading them.

28 “Follow me,” he ordered, “for the Lord has given Moab,(AT) your enemy, into your hands.(AU)” So they followed him down and took possession of the fords of the Jordan(AV) that led to Moab; they allowed no one to cross over. 29 At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all vigorous and strong; not one escaped. 30 That day Moab(AW) was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace(AX) for eighty years.

Shamgar

31 After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath,(AY) who struck down six hundred(AZ) Philistines(BA) with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel.

24 When he had gone, the servants came, and when they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked, they thought, (Z)“Surely he is relieving himself in the closet of the cool chamber.” 25 And they waited till they were embarrassed. But when he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber, they took the key and opened them, and there lay their lord dead on the floor.

26 Ehud escaped while they delayed, and he passed beyond (AA)the idols and escaped to Seirah. 27 When he arrived, (AB)he sounded the trumpet in (AC)the hill country of Ephraim. Then the people of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was their leader. 28 And he said to them, “Follow after me, (AD)for the Lord has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him and seized (AE)the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites and did not allow anyone to pass over. 29 And they killed at that time about 10,000 of the Moabites, all strong, able-bodied men; not a man escaped. 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel.
