18 My advice is that you buy gold from me that has been purified by fire so that you may be rich, and white clothing to wear so that your nakedness won’t be shamefully exposed, and ointment to put on your eyes so that you may see. 19 I correct and discipline those whom I love. So be earnest and change your hearts and lives. 20 Look! I’m standing at the door and knocking. If any hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to be with them, and will have dinner with them, and they will have dinner with me.

18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire,(A) so you can become rich; and white clothes(B) to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness;(C) and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.(D) So be earnest and repent.(E) 20 Here I am! I stand at the door(F) and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,(G) I will come in(H) and eat with that person, and they with me.

- 3:18 Gold…fire: God’s grace. White garments: symbol of an upright life; the city was noted for its violet/purple cloth. Ointment…eyes: to remove spiritual blindness; one of the city’s exports was eye ointment (see note on Rev 3:14).
