De brief aan de gemeente in Efeze
2 De Heer zei tegen Johannes: "Schrijf aan de engel[a] van de gemeente in Efeze:
Dit zegt Hij die de zeven sterren in zijn rechterhand houdt en die wandelt tussen de zeven gouden kandelaren: 2 Ik weet wat jullie allemaal doen. Ik weet hoe hard jullie werken en hoe goed jullie volhouden. En Ik weet ook dat jullie slechte mensen niet kunnen verdragen. Ik weet dat jullie hebben onderzocht of de mensen die zeggen dat ze boodschappers van God zijn, dat ook werkelijk waren. En jullie hebben ontdekt dat het leugenaars zijn. 3 Ik weet dat jullie het heel erg moeilijk hebben omdat jullie in Mij geloven. Maar jullie hebben volgehouden en hebben niet opgegeven.
4 Maar er is ook iets aan jullie wat Ik níet goed vind: jullie houden niet meer zo veel van Mij als eerst. 5 Kijk eens hoe diep jullie daardoor zijn gevallen. Jullie moeten veranderen en weer dezelfde dingen gaan doen als in het begin. Maar als jullie niet veranderen, zal Ik komen en jullie kandelaar van zijn plaats weghalen. 6 Maar Ik vind het wél heel goed van jullie, dat jullie haten wat de Nikolaïten doen.[b] Want de dingen die zij doen, haat Ik ook.
7 Als je oren hebt, moet je ook goed luisteren naar wat de Geest tegen de gemeenten zegt. Als je overwint, zal Ik je te eten geven van de levensboom die in het paradijs van God staat."
De brief aan de gemeente in Smyrna
8 De Heer zei tegen Johannes: "Schrijf aan de engel van de gemeente in Smyrna:
Dit zegt Hij die de Eerste en de Laatste is, en die dood is geweest en weer levend is geworden: 9 Ik weet wat jullie allemaal doen. Ik weet dat jullie vervolgd worden en daardoor arm zijn. Maar toch zijn jullie rijk. En Ik weet dat de Joden slechte dingen over jullie zeggen die niet waar zijn. Die mensen noemen zich wel Joden, maar in werkelijkheid zijn ze dienaren van de duivel.[c] 10 Wees niet bang voor wat jullie zullen moeten lijden. De duivel zal sommigen van jullie in de gevangenis gooien, in de hoop dat jullie je geloof zullen opgeven. Tien dagen lang zullen jullie worden verdrukt. Blijf trouw aan Mij, zelfs als je dat je leven zal kosten. Dan zal Ik jullie de levenskroon geven.
11 Als je oren hebt, moet je ook goed luisteren naar wat de Geest tegen de gemeenten zegt. Als je overwint, zul je niet meer met de tweede dood[d] te maken krijgen."
De brief aan de gemeente in Pergamum
12 De Heer zei tegen Johannes: "Schrijf aan de engel van de gemeente in Pergamum:
Dit zegt Hij die het vlijmscherpe zwaard heeft: 13 Ik weet wat jullie allemaal doen. En Ik weet dat jullie in de plaats wonen waar de duivel zijn troon heeft staan.[e] Maar toch zijn jullie op Mij blijven vertrouwen. Jullie zijn niet gaan doen alsof jullie niet in Mij geloven. Ook niet toen mijn trouwe dienaar Antipas werd vermoord in de plaats waar de duivel zijn troon heeft staan.
14 Maar Ik vind het níet goed van jullie, dat er bij jullie in de gemeente mensen zijn die leven volgens de ideeën van Bileam. Bileam leerde koning Balak hoe hij ervoor kon zorgen dat het volk Israël van God zou afdwalen.[f] Hij zorgde ervoor dat het hele volk Israël ging meedoen met het aanbidden van afgoden en de mannen met allerlei vrouwen naar bed gingen. 15 Op dezelfde manier zijn er in jullie gemeente mensen die leven volgens de ideeën van de Nikolaïten.[g] Maar Ik haat wat de Nikolaïeten doen. 16 Jullie moeten daarmee ophouden en weer gaan leven zoals Ik het wil. Als jullie dat niet doen, zal Ik komen en tegen hen strijden met het zwaard van mijn mond.
17 Als je oren hebt, moet je ook goed luisteren naar wat de Geest tegen de gemeenten zegt. Als je overwint, zal Ik je te eten geven van het geheime manna, het geheime brood uit de hemel. En Ik zal je een witte steen[h] geven met daarop een nieuwe naam. Niemand anders dan jij zal die naam weten."
De brief aan de gemeente in Tyatira
18 De Heer zei tegen Johannes: "Schrijf aan de engel van de gemeente in Tyatira:
Dit zegt de Zoon van God die ogen heeft die vlammen als vuur, en voeten die lijken op gloeiend koper: 19 Ik weet wat jullie allemaal doen. Ik weet hoeveel jullie van Mij houden. Ook weet Ik hoe groot jullie geloof is en hoe jullie volhouden om Mij te dienen. En Ik weet dat wat jullie nu doen, beter is dan wat jullie vroeger deden.
20 Maar Ik vind het níet goed van jullie, dat jullie de vrouw Izebel[i] haar gang laten gaan. Ze zegt dat ze namens Mij spreekt, maar ze leert mijn dienaren heel verkeerde dingen. Ze probeert de mensen ontrouw te maken aan Mij. Ze haalt mijn dienaren over om offers te gaan brengen aan de afgoden.[j] 21 Ik heb haar de tijd gegeven om hiermee te stoppen en te gaan leven zoals Ik het wil. Maar ze wil niet. 22 Daarom zal Ik haar ziek maken. En alle mensen die met haar meedoen, zullen in grote moeilijkheden komen als ze niet stoppen met wat ze doen. 23 Ik zal hen zelfs doden. Zo zullen alle gemeenten weten dat Ik de mensen door en door ken. En Ik zal iedereen geven wat hij heeft verdiend met wat hij gedaan heeft.
24 Maar er zijn ook mensen in Tyatira die niet naar haar hebben geluisterd. Zij hebben niet meegedaan met de duivelse dingen die de anderen deden. Hun geef Ik geen nieuwe opdracht. Tegen hen zeg Ik alleen dit: 25 Houd vast aan het geloof dat jullie hebben, totdat Ik terugkom.
26 Als je overwint en Mij tot het einde toe gehoorzaamt, zal Ik je macht geven over de ongelovigen. 27 Je zal streng over hen heersen, als met een ijzeren staf. Je zal hen vernietigen, als een kruik die je stukbreekt. Je zal dezelfde macht hebben die de Vader aan Mij heeft gegeven. 28 En Ik zal je de morgenster geven.
29 Als je oren hebt, moet je ook goed luisteren naar wat de Geest tegen de gemeenten zegt."

- Openbaring 2:1 Het Griekse woord 'angelos' betekent niet alleen 'engel'. Het kan ook vertaald worden als 'boodschapper'. In dit vers wordt met de 'boodschapper' waarschijnlijk de voorganger van de gemeente bedoeld. Hij leidt immers namens God de gemeente.
- Openbaring 2:6 De Nikolaïten noemden zich christenen. Maar ze leerden de mensen dingen die niet overeenkomen met wat Jezus of de twaalf apostelen aan de mensen leerden over het christelijk geloof. Men denkt dat ze vooral op het gebied van seks er onchristelijke ideeën op na hielden. Ze leefden er seksueel op los. Daarom haat Jezus wat ze doen.

- Openbaring 2:11 Lees ook Openbaring 20:11-15.
- Openbaring 2:13 In Pergamum had de Romeinse keizer een tempel laten neerzetten waar hij als god aanbeden wilde worden. Wie daar niet aan mee wilde doen, kon grote problemen verwachten! Het kan zijn dat de Antipas uit vers 13 daarom gedood is.
- Openbaring 2:14 Dat was toen het volk van Israël onderweg was van Egypte naar het beloofde land. Lees Numeri 31:1.
- Openbaring 2:15 De Nikolaïten noemden zich christenen. Maar ze leerden de mensen dingen die niet overeenkomen met wat Jezus of de twaalf apostelen aan de mensen leerden over het christelijk geloof. Men denkt dat ze vooral op het gebied van seks er onchristelijk ideeën op na hielden. Ze leefden er seksueel op los. Daarom haat Jezus wat ze doen.
- Openbaring 2:17 In de Griekse rechtspraak was het ontvangen van een witte steen het teken dat je werd vrijgesproken van schuld.
- Openbaring 2:20 Met Izebel wordt hier iemand bedoeld die dezelfde soort slechte dingen doet als Izebel deed, de vrouw van koning Achab uit het Oude Testament. Lees 1 Koningen 21:1-10 en 1 Koningen 18:4a. Een 'Izebel' stookt andere mensen op tot het doen van slechte dingen en tot het dienen van afgoden.
- Openbaring 2:20 Lees ook Openbaring 2:6. Misschien hoorde zij bij de stroming van de Nikolaïten.

To Ephesus
2 Write this to Ephesus, to the Angel of the church. The One with Seven Stars in his right-fist grip, striding through the golden seven-lights’ circle, speaks:
2-3 “I see what you’ve done, your hard, hard work, your refusal to quit. I know you can’t stomach evil, that you weed out apostolic pretenders. I know your persistence, your courage in my cause, that you never wear out.
4-5 “But you walked away from your first love—why? What’s going on with you, anyway? Do you have any idea how far you’ve fallen? A Lucifer fall!
“Turn back! Recover your dear early love. No time to waste, for I’m well on my way to removing your light from the golden circle.
6 “You do have this to your credit: You hate the Nicolaitan business. I hate it, too.
7 “Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches. I’m about to call each conqueror to dinner. I’m spreading a banquet of Tree-of-Life fruit, a supper plucked from God’s orchard.”
To Smyrna
8 Write this to Smyrna, to the Angel of the church. The Beginning and Ending, the First and Final One, the Once Dead and Then Come Alive, speaks:
9 “I can see your pain and poverty—constant pain, dire poverty—but I also see your wealth. And I hear the lie in the claims of those who pretend to be good Jews, who in fact belong to Satan’s crowd.
10 “Fear nothing in the things you’re about to suffer—but stay on guard! Fear nothing! The Devil is about to throw you in jail for a time of testing—ten days. It won’t last forever.
“Don’t quit, even if it costs you your life. Stay there believing. I have a Life-Crown sized and ready for you.
11 “Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches. Christ-conquerors are safe from Devil-death.”
To Pergamum
12 Write this to Pergamum, to the Angel of the church. The One with the sharp-biting sword draws from the sheath of his mouth—out come the sword words:
13 “I see where you live, right under the shadow of Satan’s throne. But you continue boldly in my Name; you never once denied my Name, even when the pressure was worst, when they martyred Antipas, my witness who stayed faithful to me on Satan’s turf.
14-15 “But why do you indulge that Balaam crowd? Don’t you remember that Balaam was an enemy agent, seducing Balak and sabotaging Israel’s holy pilgrimage by throwing unholy parties? And why do you put up with the Nicolaitans, who do the same thing?
16 “Enough! Don’t give in to them; I’ll be with you soon. I’m fed up and about to cut them to pieces with my sword-sharp words.
17 “Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches. I’ll give the sacred manna to every conqueror; I’ll also give a clear, smooth stone inscribed with your new name, your secret new name.”
To Thyatira
18 Write this to Thyatira, to the Angel of the church. God’s Son, eyes pouring fire-blaze, standing on feet of furnace-fired bronze, says this:
19 “I see everything you’re doing for me. Impressive! The love and the faith, the service and persistence. Yes, very impressive! You get better at it every day.
20-23 “But why do you let that Jezebel who calls herself a prophet mislead my dear servants into Cross-denying, self-indulging religion? I gave her a chance to change her ways, but she has no intention of giving up a career in the god-business. I’m about to lay her low, along with her partners, as they play their sex-and-religion games. The bastard offspring of their idol-whoring I’ll kill. Then every church will know that appearances don’t impress me. I x-ray every motive and make sure you get what’s coming to you.
24-25 “The rest of you Thyatirans, who have nothing to do with this outrage, who scorn this playing around with the Devil that gets paraded as profundity, be assured I’ll not make life any harder for you than it already is. Hold on to the truth you have until I get there.
26-28 “Here’s the reward I have for every conqueror, everyone who keeps at it, refusing to give up: You’ll rule the nations, your Shepherd-King rule as firm as an iron staff, their resistance fragile as clay pots. This was the gift my Father gave me; I pass it along to you—and with it, the Morning Star!
29 “Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches.”

To the Church in Ephesus
2 “To the angel[a] of the church in Ephesus(A) write:
These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand(B) and walks among the seven golden lampstands.(C) 2 I know your deeds,(D) your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested(E) those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.(F) 3 You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name,(G) and have not grown weary.
4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.(H) 5 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent(I) and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand(J) from its place. 6 But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans,(K) which I also hate.
7 Whoever has ears, let them hear(L) what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious,(M) I will give the right to eat from the tree of life,(N) which is in the paradise(O) of God.
To the Church in Smyrna
8 “To the angel of the church in Smyrna(P) write:
These are the words of him who is the First and the Last,(Q) who died and came to life again.(R) 9 I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich!(S) I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not,(T) but are a synagogue of Satan.(U) 10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you,(V) and you will suffer persecution for ten days.(W) Be faithful,(X) even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.(Y)
11 Whoever has ears, let them hear(Z) what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.(AA)
To the Church in Pergamum
12 “To the angel of the church in Pergamum(AB) write:
These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword.(AC) 13 I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me,(AD) not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness,(AE) who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.(AF)
14 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you:(AG) There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam,(AH) who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols(AI) and committed sexual immorality.(AJ) 15 Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.(AK) 16 Repent(AL) therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.(AM)
17 Whoever has ears, let them hear(AN) what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious,(AO) I will give some of the hidden manna.(AP) I will also give that person a white stone with a new name(AQ) written on it, known only to the one who receives it.(AR)
To the Church in Thyatira
18 “To the angel of the church in Thyatira(AS) write:
These are the words of the Son of God,(AT) whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze.(AU) 19 I know your deeds,(AV) your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.
20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel,(AW) who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.(AX) 21 I have given her time(AY) to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.(AZ) 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery(BA) with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds,(BB) and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.(BC)
24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you,(BD) 25 except to hold on to what you have(BE) until I come.’(BF)
26 To the one who is victorious(BG) and does my will to the end,(BH) I will give authority over the nations(BI)— 27 that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter(BJ) and will dash them to pieces like pottery’[b](BK)—just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give that one the morning star.(BL) 29 Whoever has ears, let them hear(BM) what the Spirit says to the churches.
