14 They will wage war(A) against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over(B) them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings(C)—and with him will be his called, chosen(D) and faithful followers.”

15 Then the angel said to me, “The waters(E) you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.(F) 16 The beast and the ten horns(G) you saw will hate the prostitute.(H) They will bring her to ruin(I) and leave her naked;(J) they will eat her flesh(K) and burn her with fire.(L) 17 For God has put it into their hearts(M) to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority,(N) until God’s words are fulfilled.(O) 18 The woman you saw is the great city(P) that rules over the kings of the earth.”

Lament Over Fallen Babylon

18 After this I saw another angel(Q) coming down from heaven.(R) He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.(S) With a mighty voice he shouted:

“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’[a](T)
She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,(U)
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.(V)
For all the nations have drunk
the maddening wine of her adulteries.(W)
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,(X)
and the merchants of the earth grew rich(Y) from her excessive luxuries.”(Z)

Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment

Then I heard another voice from heaven say:

“‘Come out of her, my people,’[b](AA)
so that you will not share in her sins,
so that you will not receive any of her plagues;(AB)
for her sins are piled up to heaven,(AC)
and God has remembered(AD) her crimes.
Give back to her as she has given;
pay her back(AE) double(AF) for what she has done.
Pour her a double portion from her own cup.(AG)
Give her as much torment and grief
as the glory and luxury she gave herself.(AH)
In her heart she boasts,
    ‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;[c]
    I will never mourn.’(AI)
Therefore in one day(AJ) her plagues will overtake her:
    death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,(AK)
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall

“When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her(AL) and shared her luxury(AM) see the smoke of her burning,(AN) they will weep and mourn over her.(AO) 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off(AP) and cry:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AQ)
    you mighty city of Babylon!
In one hour(AR) your doom has come!’

11 “The merchants(AS) of the earth will weep and mourn(AT) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore(AU) 12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;(AV) 13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.(AW)

14 “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ 15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her(AX) will stand far off,(AY) terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn(AZ) 16 and cry out:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(BA)
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!(BB)
17 In one hour(BC) such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’(BD)

“Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea,(BE) will stand far off.(BF) 18 When they see the smoke of her burning,(BG) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city(BH)?’(BI) 19 They will throw dust on their heads,(BJ) and with weeping and mourning(BK) cry out:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(BL)
where all who had ships on the sea
    became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’(BM)

20 “Rejoice over her, you heavens!(BN)
    Rejoice, you people of God!
    Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
with the judgment she imposed on you.”(BO)

The Finality of Babylon’s Doom

21 Then a mighty angel(BP) picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,(BQ) and said:

“With such violence
the great city(BR) of Babylon will be thrown down,
    never to be found again.
22 The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters,
will never be heard in you again.(BS)
No worker of any trade
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of a millstone
will never be heard in you again.(BT)
23 The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The voice of bridegroom and bride
will never be heard in you again.(BU)
Your merchants were the world’s important people.(BV)
By your magic spell(BW) all the nations were led astray.
24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,(BX)
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”(BY)

Sayings of Agur

30 The sayings(A) of Agur son of Jakeh—an inspired utterance.

This man’s utterance to Ithiel:

“I am weary, God,
    but I can prevail.[a]
Surely I am only a brute, not a man;
I do not have human understanding.
I have not learned wisdom,
nor have I attained to the knowledge of the Holy One.(B)
Who has gone up(C) to heaven and come down?
Whose hands(D) have gathered up the wind?
Who has wrapped up the waters(E) in a cloak?(F)
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name,(G) and what is the name of his son?
    Surely you know!

“Every word of God is flawless;(H)
he is a shield(I) to those who take refuge in him.
Do not add(J) to his words,
or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

“Two things I ask of you, Lord;
do not refuse me before I die:
Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.(K)
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown(L) you
and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’(M)
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.(N)

10 “Do not slander a servant to their master,
or they will curse you, and you will pay for it.

11 “There are those who curse their fathers
and do not bless their mothers;(O)
12 those who are pure in their own eyes(P)
and yet are not cleansed of their filth;(Q)
13 those whose eyes are ever so haughty,(R)
    whose glances are so disdainful;
14 those whose teeth(S) are swords
and whose jaws are set with knives(T)
to devour(U) the poor(V) from the earth
and the needy from among mankind.(W)

15 “The leech has two daughters.
    ‘Give! Give!’ they cry.

“There are three things that are never satisfied,(X)
    four that never say, ‘Enough!’:
16 the grave,(Y) the barren womb,
land, which is never satisfied with water,
and fire, which never says, ‘Enough!’

17 “The eye that mocks(Z) a father,
    that scorns an aged mother,
will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley,
will be eaten by the vultures.(AA)
