The Seventh Seal

When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Then I saw the seven angels who stand in the presence of God; seven trumpets were given to them. Another angel, with a gold incense burner, came and stood at the altar. He was given a large amount of incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the gold altar in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up in the presence of God from the angel’s hand. The angel took the incense burner, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it to the earth; there were rumblings of thunder, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake. And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.

The First Trumpet

The first angel[a] blew his trumpet, and hail and fire, mixed with blood, were hurled to the earth. So a third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

The Second Trumpet

The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain ablaze with fire was hurled into the sea.(A) So a third of the sea became blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

The Third Trumpet

10 The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from heaven.(B) It fell on a third of the rivers and springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood, and a third of the waters became wormwood. So, many of the people died from the waters, because they had been made bitter.

The Fourth Trumpet

12 The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day was without light, and the night as well.(C)

13 I looked again and heard an eagle[b] flying high overhead, crying out in a loud voice, “Woe!(D) Woe! Woe to those who live on the earth, because of the remaining trumpet blasts that the three angels are about to sound!”

The Fifth Trumpet

The fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth.(E) The key to the shaft of the abyss(F) was given to him. He opened the shaft of the abyss, and smoke came up out of the shaft like smoke from a great[c] furnace so that the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the shaft. Then locusts came out of the smoke on to the earth, and power[d] was given to them(G) like the power that scorpions have on the earth. They were told not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green plant, or any tree, but only people who do not have God’s seal on their foreheads. They were not permitted to kill them but were to torment them for five months; their torment is like the torment caused by a scorpion when it strikes a man. In those days people will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them.

The appearance of the locusts was like horses equipped for battle.(H) Something like gold crowns was on their heads; their faces were like men’s faces; they had hair like women’s hair; their teeth were like lions’ teeth;(I) they had chests like iron breastplates; the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses rushing into battle; 10 and they had tails with stingers like scorpions, so that with their tails they had the power[e] to harm people for five months. 11 They had as their king[f] the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon,[g] and in Greek he has the name Apollyon.[h] 12 The first woe has passed. There are still two more woes to come after this.

The Sixth Trumpet

13 The sixth angel blew his trumpet. From the four[i] horns of the gold altar(J) that is before God, I heard a voice 14 say to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels who were prepared for the hour, day, month, and year were released to kill a third of the human race. 16 The number of mounted troops was 200 million;[j] I heard their number. 17 This is how I saw the horses in my vision: The horsemen had breastplates that were fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow. The heads of the horses were like lions’ heads, and from their mouths came fire, smoke, and sulfur. 18 A third of the human race was killed by these three plagues—by the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur that came from their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails, which resemble snakes, have heads, and they inflict injury with them.

20 The rest of the people, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands to stop worshiping demons(K) and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which are not able to see, hear, or walk.(L) 21 And they did not repent of their murders, their sorceries,[k] their sexual immorality, or their thefts.

The Mighty Angel and the Small Scroll

10 Then I saw another mighty angel(M) coming down from heaven, surrounded by a cloud, with a rainbow(N) over his head.[l] His face was like the sun, his legs[m] were like fiery pillars,(O) and he had a little scroll opened in his hand. He put his right foot on the sea, his left on the land, and he cried out with a loud voice like a roaring lion. When he cried out, the seven thunders spoke with their voices. And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write. Then I heard a voice from heaven, saying, “Seal up what the seven thunders said,(P) and do not write it down!”

Then the angel that I had seen standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven. He swore an oath by the One who lives forever and ever,(Q) who created heaven and what is in it, the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it: “There will no longer be an interval of time,[n] but in the days of the sound of the seventh angel,(R) when he will blow his trumpet, then God’s hidden plan(S) will be completed, as He announced to His servants[o] the prophets.”(T)

Now the voice that I heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”

So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take and eat it; it will be bitter in your stomach, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.”(U)

10 Then I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It was as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I ate it, my stomach became bitter.(V) 11 And I was told,[p] “You must prophesy again about[q] many peoples, nations, languages, and kings.”(W)

The Two Witnesses

11 Then I was given a measuring reed(X) like a rod,[r] with these words: “Go[s] and measure God’s sanctuary and the altar, and count those who worship there. But exclude the courtyard outside the sanctuary. Don’t measure it, because it is given to the nations,[t] and they will trample the holy city for 42 months. I will empower[u] my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days,[v](Y) dressed in sackcloth.”[w] These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord[x] of the earth.(Z) If anyone wants to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and consumes their enemies;(AA) if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this way. These men have the power to close up the sky so that it does not rain during the days of their prophecy.(AB) They also have power over the waters to turn them into blood(AC) and to strike the earth with every plague whenever they want.

The Witnesses Martyred

When they finish their testimony, the beast[y](AD) that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, conquer them, and kill them. Their dead bodies[z](AE) will lie in the public square[aa] of the great city, which prophetically[ab] is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. And representatives from[ac] the peoples, tribes, languages, and nations(AF) will view their bodies for three and a half days and not permit their bodies to be put into a tomb. 10 Those who live on the earth will gloat over them and celebrate and send gifts to one another because these two prophets brought judgment to those who live on the earth.

The Witnesses Resurrected

11 But after 3½ days, the breath[ad] of life(AG) from God entered them, and they stood on their feet. So great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 Then they heard[ae] a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” They went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies watched them.(AH) 13 At that moment a violent earthquake took place,(AI) a tenth of the city fell, and 7,000 people were killed in the earthquake. The survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven. 14 The second woe(AJ) has passed. Take note: The third woe is coming quickly!

The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel blew his trumpet,(AK) and there were loud voices in heaven saying:

The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom
of our Lord and of His Messiah,
and He will reign forever and ever!(AL)

16 The 24 elders, who were seated before God on their thrones, fell facedown and worshiped God, 17 saying:

We thank You, Lord God, the Almighty,
who is and who was,[af](AM)
because You have taken Your great power
and have begun to reign.(AN)
18 The nations were angry,(AO)
but Your wrath has come.
The time has come
for the dead to be judged
and to give the reward
to Your servants the prophets,(AP)
to the saints, and to those who fear Your name,
both small and great,(AQ)
and the time has come to destroy
those who destroy the earth.

19 God’s sanctuary in heaven was opened, and the ark of His covenant[ag] appeared in His sanctuary. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings of thunder,(AR) an earthquake,[ah] and severe hail.

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

When he opened the seventh seal,(A) there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

And I saw the seven angels(B) who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.(C)

Another angel,(D) who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people,(E) on the golden altar(F) in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God(G) from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar,(H) and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder,(I) rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.(J)

The Trumpets

Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets(K) prepared to sound them.

The first angel(L) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire(M) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third(N) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.(O)

The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain,(P) all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third(Q) of the sea turned into blood,(R) a third(S) of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky(T) on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water(U) 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third(V) of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.(W)

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third(X) of them turned dark.(Y) A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.(Z)

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair(AA) call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe(AB) to the inhabitants of the earth,(AC) because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth.(AD) The star was given the key(AE) to the shaft of the Abyss.(AF) When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.(AG) The sun and sky were darkened(AH) by the smoke from the Abyss.(AI) And out of the smoke locusts(AJ) came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions(AK) of the earth. They were told not to harm(AL) the grass of the earth or any plant or tree,(AM) but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.(AN) They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months.(AO) And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion(AP) when it strikes. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.(AQ)

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle.(AR) On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces.(AS) Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth.(AT) They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.(AU) 10 They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.(AV) 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss,(AW) whose name in Hebrew(AX) is Abaddon(AY) and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).

12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.(AZ)

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns(BA) of the golden altar that is before God.(BB) 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels(BC) who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”(BD) 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released(BE) to kill a third(BF) of mankind.(BG) 16 The number of the mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard their number.(BH)

17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths(BI) came fire, smoke and sulfur.(BJ) 18 A third(BK) of mankind was killed(BL) by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur(BM) that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.

20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent(BN) of the work of their hands;(BO) they did not stop worshiping demons,(BP) and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.(BQ) 21 Nor did they repent(BR) of their murders, their magic arts,(BS) their sexual immorality(BT) or their thefts.

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 Then I saw another mighty angel(BU) coming down from heaven.(BV) He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow(BW) above his head; his face was like the sun,(BX) and his legs were like fiery pillars.(BY) He was holding a little scroll,(BZ) which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land,(CA) and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion.(CB) When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders(CC) spoke. And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write;(CD) but I heard a voice from heaven(CE) say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.”(CF)

Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land(CG) raised his right hand to heaven.(CH) And he swore(CI) by him who lives for ever and ever,(CJ) who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it,(CK) and said, “There will be no more delay!(CL) But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet,(CM) the mystery(CN) of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”(CO)

Then the voice that I had heard from heaven(CP) spoke to me once more: “Go, take the scroll(CQ) that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”

So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’[b](CR) 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth,(CS) but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy(CT) again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.”(CU)

The Two Witnesses

11 I was given a reed like a measuring rod(CV) and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. But exclude the outer court;(CW) do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles.(CX) They will trample on the holy city(CY) for 42 months.(CZ) And I will appoint my two witnesses,(DA) and they will prophesy for 1,260 days,(DB) clothed in sackcloth.”(DC) They are “the two olive trees”(DD) and the two lampstands, and “they stand before the Lord of the earth.”[c](DE) If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.(DF) This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.(DG) They have power to shut up the heavens(DH) so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying;(DI) and they have power to turn the waters into blood(DJ) and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast(DK) that comes up from the Abyss(DL) will attack them,(DM) and overpower and kill them. Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city(DN)—which is figuratively called Sodom(DO) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.(DP) For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation(DQ) will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.(DR) 10 The inhabitants of the earth(DS) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,(DT) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

11 But after the three and a half days(DU) the breath[d] of life from God entered them,(DV) and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.”(DW) And they went up to heaven in a cloud,(DX) while their enemies looked on.

13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake(DY) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory(DZ) to the God of heaven.(EA)

14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.(EB)

The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet,(EC) and there were loud voices(ED) in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,(EE)
and he will reign for ever and ever.”(EF)

16 And the twenty-four elders,(EG) who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces(EH) and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give thanks(EI) to you, Lord God Almighty,(EJ)
the One who is and who was,(EK)
because you have taken your great power
    and have begun to reign.(EL)
18 The nations were angry,(EM)
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,(EN)
and for rewarding your servants the prophets(EO)
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small(EP)
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then God’s temple(EQ) in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.(ER) And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,(ES) an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.(ET)
