The First Seal: Conqueror on a White Horse

Then I saw when the (A)Lamb broke one of the (B)seven seals, and I heard one of the (C)four living creatures saying as with a (D)voice of thunder, “Come[a]!” I looked, and behold, a (E)white horse, and the one who sat on it had a bow; and (F)a crown was given to him, and he went out (G)conquering and to conquer.

The Second Seal: War

When He broke the second seal, I heard the (H)second living creature saying, “Come[b]!” And another, (I)a red horse, went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to (J)take peace from the earth, and that people would kill one another; and a large sword was given to him.

The Third Seal: Famine

When He broke the third seal, I heard the (K)third living creature saying, “Come[c]!” I looked, and behold, a (L)black horse, and the one who sat on it had a (M)pair of scales in his hand. And I heard something like a voice in the center of the (N)four living creatures saying, “A [d]quart of wheat for a [e]denarius, and three [f]quarts of barley for a [g]denarius; and (O)do not damage the oil and the wine.”

The Fourth Seal: Death

When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the (P)fourth living creature saying, “Come[h]!” I looked, and behold, [i]an (Q)ashen horse; and the one who sat on it had the name (R)Death, and (S)Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, (T)to kill with sword, and famine, and [j]plague, and by the wild animals of the earth.

The Fifth Seal: Martyrs

When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw (U)underneath the (V)altar the (W)souls of those who had been killed (X)because of the word of God, and because of the (Y)testimony which they had maintained; 10 and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “(Z)How long, O [k](AA)Lord, (AB)holy and true, [l]will You refrain from (AC)judging and avenging our blood on (AD)those who live on the earth?” 11 And a (AE)white robe was given to each of them; and they were told that they were to (AF)rest for a little while longer, (AG)until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers and sisters who were to be killed even as they had been, was (AH)completed also.

The Sixth Seal: Terror

12 And I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great (AI)earthquake; and the (AJ)sun became as black as (AK)sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; 13 and (AL)the stars of the sky fell to the earth, (AM)as a fig tree drops its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. 14 (AN)The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and (AO)every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then (AP)the kings of the earth and the eminent people, and the commanders and the wealthy and the strong, and every slave and free person hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; 16 and they *(AQ)said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the [m]sight of Him (AR)who sits on the throne, and from the (AS)wrath of the Lamb; 17 for (AT)the great day of Their wrath has come, and (AU)who is able to stand?”

The Seals

I watched as the Lamb(A) opened the first of the seven seals.(B) Then I heard one of the four living creatures(C) say in a voice like thunder,(D) “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a white horse!(E) Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown,(F) and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.(G)

When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature(H) say, “Come!” Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.(I) Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth(J) and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.

When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature(K) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse!(L) Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures,(M) saying, “Two pounds[a] of wheat for a day’s wages,[b] and six pounds[c] of barley for a day’s wages,[d](N) and do not damage(O) the oil and the wine!”

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature(P) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!(Q) Its rider was named Death, and Hades(R) was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.(S)

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under(T) the altar(U) the souls of those who had been slain(V) because of the word of God(W) and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long,(X) Sovereign Lord,(Y) holy and true,(Z) until you judge the inhabitants of the earth(AA) and avenge our blood?”(AB) 11 Then each of them was given a white robe,(AC) and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[e] were killed just as they had been.(AD)

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake.(AE) The sun turned black(AF) like sackcloth(AG) made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth,(AH) as figs drop from a fig tree(AI) when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up,(AJ) and every mountain and island was removed from its place.(AK)

15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free,(AL) hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.(AM) 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us(AN) and hide us[f] from the face of him who sits on the throne(AO) and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day(AP) of their[g] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”(AQ)

Judgment on Moab

This is what the Lord says:

“For three offenses of (A)Moab, and for four,
I will not [a]revoke its punishment,
Because he (B)burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.
So I will send fire upon Moab
And it will consume the citadels of (C)Kerioth;
And Moab will die amid the (D)panic of battle,
Amid war cries and the sound of a trumpet.
I will also eliminate the [b](E)judge from her midst
And slay all her (F)leaders with him,” says the Lord.

Judgment on Judah

This is what the Lord says:
“For three offenses of (G)Judah, and for four,
I will not revoke its punishment,
Because they (H)rejected the Law of the Lord
And have not kept His statutes;
Their [c](I)lies also have led them astray,
Those which their (J)fathers followed.
So I will (K)send fire upon Judah,
And it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem.”

Judgment on Israel

This is what the Lord says:
“For three offenses of (L)Israel, and for four,
I will not revoke its punishment,
Because they (M)sell the righteous for [d]money,
And the needy for a pair of sandals.
These who [e]trample the head of the (N)helpless to the dust of the earth
Also (O)divert the way of the humble;
And a (P)man and his father [f]resort to the same [g]girl
So as to profane My holy name.
And on garments (Q)seized as pledges they stretch out beside (R)every altar,
And in the house of their God they (S)drink the wine of those who have been fined.

“Yet it was I who destroyed the (T)Amorite before them,
[h]Though his (U)height was like the height of cedars
And he was as strong as the oaks;
I also destroyed his (V)fruit above and his roots below.
10 And it was I who (W)brought you up from the land of Egypt,
And led you in the wilderness for (X)forty years
So that you might take possession of the land of the (Y)Amorite.
11 Then I (Z)raised up some of your sons to be prophets,
And some of your young men to be (AA)Nazirites.
Is this not so, you sons of Israel?” declares the Lord.
12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine,
And you commanded the prophets, saying, ‘You (AB)shall not prophesy!’
13 Behold, I am (AC)making a rut in the ground beneath you,
Just as a wagon makes a rut when filled with sheaves.
14 (AD)Refuge will be lost from the swift,
And the strong will not strengthen his power,
Nor the (AE)warrior save his [i]life.
15 The one who (AF)grasps the bow will not stand his ground,
The swift of foot will not escape,
Nor will the one who rides the (AG)horse save his [j]life.
16 Even the [k]bravest among the warriors will (AH)flee naked on that day,” declares the Lord.

All the Tribes Are Guilty

Hear this word which the Lord has spoken against you, sons of Israel, against the entire [l](AI)family which [m]He brought up from the land of Egypt:

(AJ)You only have I [n]known among all the families of the earth;
Therefore I will [o](AK)punish you for all your wrongdoing.”
Do two people walk together unless they have agreed to meet?
Does a (AL)lion roar in the forest when he has no prey?
Does a young lion [p]growl from his den unless he has captured something?
Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground when there is no [q]device in it?
Does a trap spring up from the earth when it captures nothing at all?
If a (AM)trumpet is blown in a city, will the people not tremble?
If a (AN)disaster occurs in a city, has the Lord not brought it about?
[r]Certainly the Lord [s]God does nothing
Unless He (AO)reveals His secret plan
To His servants the prophets.
A (AP)lion has roared! Who will not fear?
The (AQ)Lord God has spoken! (AR)Who can do anything but prophesy?

Proclaim on the citadels in (AS)Ashdod and on the citadels in the land of Egypt and say, “Assemble yourselves on the (AT)mountains of Samaria and see the great panic within her and the (AU)oppressions in her midst. 10 But they (AV)do not know how to do what is right,” declares the Lord, “these who (AW)store up [t]violence and devastation in their citadels.”

11 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:

“An (AX)enemy, one surrounding the land,
Will take down your fortifications from you,
And your (AY)citadels will be looted.”

12 This is what the Lord says:

“Just as the shepherd [u](AZ)snatches from the lion’s mouth a couple of legs or a piece of an ear,
So will the sons of Israel living in Samaria be [v]snatched away—
With the (BA)corner of a bed and the [w](BB)cover of a couch!
13 Hear and (BC)testify against the house of Jacob,”
Declares the Lord God, the God of armies.
14 “For on the day that I punish Israel’s offenses,
I will also punish the altars of (BD)Bethel;
The horns of the altar will be cut off,
And will fall to the ground.
15 I will also strike the (BE)winter house together with the (BF)summer house;
The houses of [x](BG)ivory will also perish,
And the (BH)great houses will come to an end,”
Declares the Lord.

“Yet You Have Not Returned to Me”

Hear this word, you [y]cows of (BI)Bashan who are on the (BJ)mountain of Samaria,
Who (BK)exploit the poor, who oppress the needy,
[z]And say to their [aa]husbands, “Bring now, that we may (BL)drink!”
The Lord [ab]God has (BM)sworn by His (BN)holiness,
“For behold, the days are coming upon you
When [ac]they will take you away with (BO)meat hooks,
And the last of you with (BP)fish hooks.
You will (BQ)go out through holes in the walls,
One in front of the other,
And you [ad]will be hurled to Harmon,” declares the Lord.

“Enter Bethel and do wrong;
In Gilgal multiply wrongdoing!
(BR)Bring your sacrifices every morning,
Your tithes every three days.
[ae]Offer a (BS)thanksgiving offering also from that which is leavened,
And proclaim (BT)[af]voluntary offerings, make them known.
For so you (BU)love to do, you sons of Israel,”
Declares the Lord God.

“But I gave you also (BV)cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
And lack of bread in all your places;
Yet you have (BW)not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
“Furthermore, I (BX)withheld the rain from you
While there were still three months until harvest.
Then I would send rain on one city,
But on (BY)another city I would not send rain;
One part would be rained on,
While the part not rained on would dry up.
So the people of two or three cities would stagger to another city to drink (BZ)water,
But would (CA)not be satisfied;
Yet you have (CB)not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
“I (CC)struck you with scorching wind and mildew;
The (CD)caterpillar was devouring
Your many gardens and vineyards, fig trees and olive trees;
Yet you have (CE)not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
10 “I sent a (CF)plague among you [ag]as in Egypt;
I (CG)killed your young men with the sword, along with your (CH)captured horses,
And I made the (CI)stench of your camp rise up in your nostrils;
Yet you have (CJ)not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
11 “I overthrew you, as (CK)God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,
And you were like a (CL)log snatched from a fire;
Yet you have (CM)not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
12 “Therefore so I will do to you, Israel;
Because I will do this to you,
Prepare to (CN)meet your God, Israel.”
13 For behold, He who (CO)forms mountains and (CP)creates the wind,
And (CQ)declares to a person what are His thoughts,
He who (CR)makes dawn into darkness
And (CS)treads on the high places of the earth,
(CT)The Lord God of armies is His name.

11 “I also raised up prophets(AF) from among your children

declares the Lord.

Witnesses Summoned Against Israel

Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the Lord has spoken against you(AQ)—against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:(AR)

“You only have I chosen(AS)
    of all the families of the earth;
therefore I will punish(AT) you
    for all your sins.(AU)

Do two walk together
    unless they have agreed to do so?
Does a lion roar(AV) in the thicket
    when it has no prey?(AW)
Does it growl in its den
    when it has caught nothing?
Does a bird swoop down to a trap on the ground
    when no bait(AX) is there?
Does a trap spring up from the ground
    if it has not caught anything?
When a trumpet(AY) sounds in a city,
    do not the people tremble?
When disaster(AZ) comes to a city,
    has not the Lord caused it?(BA)

Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing
    without revealing his plan(BB)
    to his servants the prophets.(BC)

The lion(BD) has roared(BE)
    who will not fear?
The Sovereign Lord has spoken—
    who can but prophesy?(BF)

Proclaim to the fortresses of Ashdod(BG)
    and to the fortresses of Egypt:
“Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria;(BH)
    see the great unrest within her
    and the oppression among her people.”

10 “They do not know how to do right,(BI)” declares the Lord,
    “who store up in their fortresses(BJ)
    what they have plundered(BK) and looted.”

11 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“An enemy will overrun your land,
    pull down your strongholds
    and plunder your fortresses.(BL)

12 This is what the Lord says:

“As a shepherd rescues from the lion’s(BM) mouth
    only two leg bones or a piece of an ear,
so will the Israelites living in Samaria be rescued,
    with only the head of a bed
    and a piece of fabric[d] from a couch.[e](BN)

13 “Hear this and testify(BO) against the descendants of Jacob,” declares the Lord, the Lord God Almighty.

14 “On the day I punish(BP) Israel for her sins,

You will each go straight out
    through breaches in the wall,(CH)
    and you will be cast out toward Harmon,[g]
declares the Lord.
“Go to Bethel(CI) and sin;
    go to Gilgal(CJ) and sin yet more.
Bring your sacrifices every morning,(CK)
    your tithes(CL) every three years.[h](CM)
Burn leavened bread(CN) as a thank offering
    and brag about your freewill offerings(CO)
boast about them, you Israelites,
    for this is what you love to do,”
declares the Sovereign Lord.

“I gave you empty stomachs in every city
    and lack of bread in every town,
    yet you have not returned to me,”
declares the Lord.(CP)

“I also withheld(CQ) rain from you
    when the harvest was still three months away.
I sent rain on one town,
    but withheld it from another.(CR)
One field had rain;
    another had none and dried up.
People staggered from town to town for water(CS)
    but did not get enough(CT) to drink,
    yet you have not returned(CU) to me,”
declares the Lord.(CV)

“Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards,
    destroying them with blight and mildew.(CW)
Locusts(CX) devoured your fig and olive trees,(CY)
    yet you have not returned(CZ) to me,”
declares the Lord.

10 “I sent plagues(DA) among you
    as I did to Egypt.(DB)
I killed your young men(DC) with the sword,
    along with your captured horses.
I filled your nostrils with the stench(DD) of your camps,
    yet you have not returned to me,”(DE)
declares the Lord.(DF)

11 “I overthrew some of you
    as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.(DG)
You were like a burning stick(DH) snatched from the fire,
    yet you have not returned to me,”
declares the Lord.(DI)

12 “Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel,
    and because I will do this to you, Israel,
    prepare to meet your God.”

13 He who forms the mountains,(DJ)
