23 and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he (A)who searches mind and heart, and (B)I will give to each of you according to your works. 24 But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call (C)the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I (D)do not lay on you any other burden. 25 Only hold fast (E)what you have until I come. 26 (F)The one who conquers and who keeps my works (G)until the end, (H)to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and (I)he will (J)rule[a] them with a rod of iron, (K)as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28 And I will give him (L)the morning star. 29 (M)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

To the Church in Sardis

“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him (N)who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.

“‘I know your works. You have the reputation (O)of being alive, (P)but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works (Q)complete in the sight of my God. (R)Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, (S)I will come (T)like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not (U)soiled their garments, and they will walk with me (V)in white, for they are (W)worthy. (X)The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never (Y)blot his name out of (Z)the book of life. (AA)I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. (AB)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

To the Church in Philadelphia

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of (AC)the holy one, (AD)the true one, (AE)who has the key of David, (AF)who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

“‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you (AG)an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Behold, I will make those of (AH)the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, (AI)I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that (AJ)I have loved you. 10 (AK)Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try (AL)those who dwell on the earth. 11 (AM)I am coming soon. (AN)Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize (AO)your crown. 12 (AP)The one who conquers, I will make him (AQ)a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him (AR)the name of my God, and (AS)the name of the city of my God, (AT)the new Jerusalem, (AU)which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own (AV)new name. 13 (AW)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

To the Church in Laodicea

14 “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the (AX)Amen, (AY)the faithful and true witness, (AZ)the beginning of God's creation.

15 “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. (BA)Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 (BB)For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, (BC)blind, and naked. 18 I counsel you (BD)to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and (BE)white garments so that you may clothe yourself and (BF)the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, (BG)so that you may see. 19 (BH)Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and (BI)knock. (BJ)If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, (BK)I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 21 (BL)The one who conquers, (BM)I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as (BN)I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 (BO)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

The Throne in Heaven

After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me (BP)like a trumpet, said, (BQ)“Come up here, and (BR)I will show you what must take place after this.” At once (BS)I was in the Spirit, and behold, (BT)a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. And he who sat there had the appearance of (BU)jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was (BV)a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. Around the throne were (BW)twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, (BX)clothed in white garments, with (BY)golden crowns on their heads. From the throne came (BZ)flashes of lightning, and rumblings[b] and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning (CA)seven torches of fire, (CB)which are the seven spirits of God, and before the throne there was (CC)as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.

And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are (CD)four living creatures, (CE)full of eyes in front and behind: (CF)the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. And the four living creatures, (CG)each of them with six wings, are (CH)full of eyes all around and within, and (CI)day and night they never cease to say,

(CJ)“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty,
(CK)who was and is and is to come!”

And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, (CL)who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders (CM)fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast (CN)their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 (CO)“Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for (CP)you created all things,
and (CQ)by your will they existed and were created.”

The Scroll and the Lamb

Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne (CR)a scroll written within and on the back, (CS)sealed with seven seals. And (CT)I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, (CU)the Lion (CV)of the tribe of Judah, (CW)the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw (CX)a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with (CY)seven eyes, which are (CZ)the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders (DA)fell down before the Lamb, (DB)each holding a harp, and (DC)golden bowls full of incense, (DD)which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang (DE)a new song, saying,

“Worthy are you to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
for (DF)you were slain, and by your blood (DG)you ransomed people for God
from (DH)every tribe and language and people and nation,
10 and you have made them (DI)a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering (DJ)myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice,

(DK)“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!”

13 And I heard (DL)every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

14 And the four living creatures (DM)said, “Amen!” and the elders (DN)fell down and worshiped.

The Seven Seals

Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of (DO)the seven seals, and I heard (DP)one of the four living creatures say (DQ)with a voice like thunder, (DR)“Come!” And I looked, and behold, (DS)a white horse! And (DT)its rider had a bow, and (DU)a crown was given to him, and he came out (DV)conquering, and to conquer.

When he opened the second seal, I heard (DW)the second living creature say, “Come!” And out came another horse, (DX)bright red. Its rider was permitted (DY)to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword.

When he opened the third seal, I heard the (DZ)third living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, (EA)a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, (EB)“A quart[c] of wheat for a denarius,[d] and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and (EC)do not harm the oil and wine!”

When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of (ED)the fourth living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, (EE)a pale horse! And its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill (EF)with sword and with famine and with pestilence and (EG)by wild beasts of the earth.

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under (EH)the altar (EI)the souls of those who had been slain (EJ)for the word of God and for (EK)the witness they had borne. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, (EL)holy and true, (EM)how long (EN)before you will judge and (EO)avenge our blood on (EP)those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then they were each given (EQ)a white robe and (ER)told to rest a little longer, (ES)until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers[e] (ET)should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

To the Church in Sardis

“To the angel[b] of the church in Sardis(M) write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits[c](N) of God and the seven stars.(O) I know your deeds;(P) you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.(Q) Wake up! Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes.(U) They will walk with me, dressed in white,(V) for they are worthy. The one who is victorious(W) will, like them, be dressed in white.(X) I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life,(Y) but will acknowledge that name before my Father(Z) and his angels. To the Church in Philadelphia

“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia(AB) write:

To the Church in Laodicea

14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea(AZ) write:

These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness,(BA) the ruler of God’s creation.(BB) 15 I know your deeds,(BC) that you are neither cold nor hot.(BD) I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’(BE) But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.(BF) 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire,(BG) so you can become rich; and white clothes(BH) to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness;(BI) and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

The Throne in Heaven

After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open(BS) in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet(BT) said, “Come up here,(BU) and I will show you what must take place after this.”(BV) At once I was in the Spirit,(BW) and there before me was a throne in heaven(BX) with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper(BY) and ruby.(BZ) A rainbow(CA) that shone like an emerald(CB) encircled the throne. Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders.(CC) They were dressed in white(CD) and had crowns of gold on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder.(CE) In front of the throne, seven lamps(CF) were blazing. These are the seven spirits[d](CG) of God. Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass,(CH) clear as crystal.

In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures,(CI) and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back.(CJ) The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.(CK) Each of the four living creatures(CL) had six wings(CM) and was covered with eyes all around,(CN) even under its wings. Day and night(CO) they never stop saying:

“‘Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,’[e](CP)

who was, and is, and is to come.”(CQ)

Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne(CR) and who lives for ever and ever,(CS) 10 the twenty-four elders(CT) fall down before him(CU) who sits on the throne(CV) and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,(CW)
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
    and have their being.”(CX)

The Scroll and the Lamb

Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne(CY) a scroll with writing on both sides(CZ) and sealed(DA) with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel(DB) proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion(DC) of the tribe of Judah,(DD) the Root of David,(DE) has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

Then I saw a Lamb,(DF) looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures(DG) and the elders.(DH) The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes,(DI) which are the seven spirits[f](DJ) of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.(DK) And when he had taken it, the four living creatures(DL) and the twenty-four elders(DM) fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp(DN) and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers(DO) of God’s people. And they sang a new song, saying:(DP)

“You are worthy(DQ) to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood(DR) you purchased(DS) for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.(DT)
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests(DU) to serve our God,
and they will reign[g] on the earth.”(DV)

11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand.(DW) They encircled the throne and the living creatures(DX) and the elders.(DY) 12 In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb,(DZ) who was slain,(EA)
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”(EB)

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth(EC) and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne(ED) and to the Lamb(EE)
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”(EF)

14 The four living creatures(EG) said, “Amen,”(EH) and the elders(EI) fell down and worshiped.(EJ)

The Seals

I watched as the Lamb(EK) opened the first of the seven seals.(EL) Then I heard one of the four living creatures(EM) say in a voice like thunder,(EN) “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a white horse!(EO) Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown,(EP) and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.(EQ)

When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature(ER) say, “Come!” Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.(ES) Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth(ET) and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.

When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature(EU) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse!(EV) Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures,(EW) saying, “Two pounds[h] of wheat for a day’s wages,[i] and six pounds[j] of barley for a day’s wages,[k](EX) and do not damage(EY) the oil and the wine!”

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature(EZ) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!(FA) Its rider was named Death, and Hades(FB) was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.(FC)

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under(FD) the altar(FE) the souls of those who had been slain(FF) because of the word of God(FG) and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long,(FH) Sovereign Lord,(FI) holy and true,(FJ) until you judge the inhabitants of the earth(FK) and avenge our blood?”(FL) 11 Then each of them was given a white robe,(FM) and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[l] were killed just as they had been.(FN)
